| Kushiyaki and Tempura Sets
This restaurant serves unique Japanese Kushiage, which is fried foodstuff on skewers, similar to tempura on sumiyaki sticks. We tried their set dinners during lunch (Yes, they offer set dinners during lunchtime), I had a Ebi-Hire Set ($37), Mum had the Katsu-don Set (around $37). We also ordered (ala-carte) a Soft Shell Crab Tempura, Pork fillet kushiage ($3.50), Beef fillet kushiage ($3.50) and Shittake mushroom kushiage.
They serve 4 different condiments to go with your kushiage, Green Tea Salt, Curry Salt, Chilli Sauce and Tartar Sauce. They also provide normal salt, lemon and something similar to HP Sauce.
The Beef Fillet Kushiage was my first deep fried beef, but it did not impress me much because I could not get the beefy oomph I was hoping for. But it was tender and the batter was pretty crispy and light. The Pork Fillet Kushiage, on the other hand, was delicious! Tender and juicy meat with a crispy batter on the exterior. The Shittake was just average. Mum thought she had better Soft Shell Crab Tempura elsewhere.
Then came our set meals, which came with the main course, a bowl of quality Japanese rice, pickles, Miso Soup, Salad and sauces. Mum's Katsudon came with a bowl of sesame seeds and pestle for you to grind them in a circular motion, the way Japanese eat Tonkatsu in Japan.
My ebi was pretty fresh and meaty, same batter used for the pork and beef kushiage. The pork that came with my set, however, was a let-down. I expected it to be just as good as my previous Pork Fillet Kushiage, but unfortunately they over-seasoned this pork with black pepper, overpowering the taste of the pork meat itself.
The rice was good, and the miso soup was just right-- not salty at all. Gulping down the soup slowly after the meal really warms your whole body. Mmm.. Mum's Katsudon was quite delicious, although I felt it was a bit saltish.
Dinner ended with a choice of dessert: Green Tea Mochi, Watermelon or Coffee/Tea. I had watermelon, which was diced into cute sakura shapes, while Mum had coffee.
Overall, nice ambience, modern decor and good service. But I felt that the prices were a tad expensive for the portion, especially when I didn't feel full at all after the meal. Total cost for two was around $75. One suggestion would be to add Kurobuta to their menu, which I absolutely love! (: |
