| Nice but not quite for me
The shop is casual and nice. But a little quiet at lunch. While waiting for my friend to attend an exhibition, I decided to just try a light meal here.
Healthy and organic food may be good, but perhaps not quite for an ordinary joe like me. I tried the White Bean Soup. The taste is not bad, with some roast duck skin and meat. Texture is rather smooth. The accompanying bread is a little thinly cut for my liking. It is ok, but I feel it's not quite value for money. The soup meal cost me $9.10. It is stated as $8.10 but with the 7% GST, it became $9.10.
I am somewhat disappointed that they have to charge GST this way, and not absorbed into the price. Don't F&B companies know that they cannot charge GST separately, unless they also include service charge? This is a policy set by IRAS - to protect and avoid confusion for consumers. The service at the counter was so so. He was not quite paying attention to my question asked. The lady by the name Christine is a lot more cheerful. She helped me decide on the White Bean Soup.
It's a good place for a particular group of people who likes organic / healthy food. Not quite for me though. |

| Healthy grub worth splurging on
Finally! A vegetarian and health-friendly cafe that offers a wholesome, fresh, and creative menu!
12x12 bears a deconstructed, warehouse/loft interior that reminds one of the original Project Shop Blood Brothers in Paragon (before reno), but an updated and slightly more glamorous version. Already a fan of the carrot cake at the related House, I came in with high hopes that were not disappointed.
On the menu are soups, salads, pastas and Fit balls (small rice balls). The soups are oh-so-smooth, cream-free, starch-free blends that range from butternut pumpkin, to lentil and even cauliflower.
My cauliflower soup was a light, silky, milky broth with generous slivers of fried garlic which enhanced the cauliflower soup significantly. Accompanying the soup is a slice of chewy, crusty toasted baguette, and homemade, thin, crispy and very addictive black pepper lavash bread. My only gripe is that for the price (around $9) this is probably one of the most expensive soups around, given the smallish-portion.
To top up, I had a side of a smoked salmon fit ball which comprised a 1.5 inch in diameter brown rice ball with flaky bits of cooked smoked salmon. I found the rice a tad dry on that day but nonetheless appreciated the clean, natural flavours. Again, at $2.50 per ball, this is not cheap.
Still, 12x12 offers high quality, healthy, wholesome fare. And knowing you're doing your body good is worth splurging on. |

| Good healthy Food
Simple as that - Good Healthy Food. My bf decided to bring me to this cafe on 4th June after reading a good review from Men's healthy magazine. This cafe is operated by STRIP next door and has a modern rustic charm to it. I was initially skeptical when he mentioned "healthy organic food" today for dinner even though I'm a big preacher for health.
Seeing the menu for the first time set me in awe, it actually looks good. We had 3 types of fitballs made of different types of rice mainly brown (can't remember the rest): Salmon and asparagus, vegetarian, ham. I enjoyed the 3 particularly the salmon while the AM's favorite is vegetarian. Rice was moist and soft with good natural flavors.
There were only 2 types of sandwiches available: Beef Pastrami and Vietnamese Chicken. We chose the chicken even AM wanted beef. There were bean sprouts, lettuce and tender chicken strips in the sandwich. No dressings inside which normally makes any sandwich a calorie emperor. There was enough flavor in the fill that was good enough for our tastebuds. I had Green lentil soup which was nice and rich. The soup was a puree and no cream served in a cardbox bowl which was kind of neat. It was good and rich which filled me up pretty fast. Beetroot salad with oranges was equally good. 1 last mention: The carrot cake was really good as well!
We will be back, thats for sure. Good, healthy food at a reasonable price. I left hoping that this cafe will not die like so many others that does good for the heart. |
