| Revitalised
Tired after a night call (think 30 hours straight work), I met with some good friends one of whom was only in town for 2 weeks. After the dinner farce at NYDC, we adjourned to 2am dessert bar for, well, dessert.
Cranky old me, standing there in my berms, was totally ignored for close to 3 minutes by staff. Haha, so much for first impressions.
Later I'd realise its because the place was friggin' full! With only about 5-6 staff to handle all their demands and requests. And still they delivered service with a smile, even if a bit zoomy (they had to zoom somewhere else to get something done). The cook/chef even came out to personally explain each dessert! Respect.
Dessert - it was without a doubt the single best experience I had that week. I am NOT a gastronomic person; I eat to live, not the other way round like my glutton family. And yet their chocolate cheese dessert lifted me out of the depths of my crankiness and propelled me into lala-land. I got a bit high and started talking smack about the frontin' people starin' at my berms.
Ambience - good, if I got the couch, I'd probably give a 9.5 to 10. Lighting was suitably dark, not too dark, not too bright (i'm a bit oversensitive to bright light). TOo many people made for noisy conversations.
Value - I beg to differ. Where else would you find such fantastic, high quality premium chocolate and premium cheese desserts at such good prices? Remember I was totally cranky, so it must've been REALLY good. |

| Gotta love the chocolate and churros
Was bemoaning the demise of Macaron and Room4Dessert in NYC when a friend brought us to 2am dessert bar. Good vibes from the downtempo music and monochromatic decor. Also brought other friends on subsequent visits who all liked the place.
Food: Shared the chocolate tart, Twix and Blackberry. Also got the macaroni and cheese as well the hot chocolate with churros as an afterthought. Desserts were all quite decent, thought the mac & cheese was pretty damn good. Hot chocolate bit overly viscuous and a tad sweet, but must say the tiny churros rocks socks.
Service: Decent, but nothing to shout about. Janice was very nice and hospitable though.
Ambience: Love it. But can get a bit noisy when the place is full. Try scoring the seats with the cushions. You really won't want to leave.
Not exactly great value for money, and on a scale of innovative desserts, this isn't quite comparable to Macaron. Nice place to hang out at night though. |

| Feeling a little Atas? This is the Perfect Place.
Galfren and I had a get together for a post birthday celebration. After dinner at Hog's Breath, we decided to head somewhere different from our usual choices. This time it was all the way to Holland V.
Having not read any reviews on this place, but came across it a couple of times when I was ard the area - the Restaurant's name caught my attention. It reminded me of how we would crave to chill over a plate of nice dessert at Freestyle while in Australia. So when I spotted the name of the place, I was excited and was planning to try it soon.
Galfren said her fren had good reviews about the place. Raving about the how they use, "Premium Dark Chocolate" for their desserts. However, bearing in mind that Her Fren is the Atas sort, we were prepared to throw in our week's savings.
Ambience
-------
Ambience of the place was definitely chic and cosy. The couch concept was pretty interesting. Galfren and I took the couch seats for two, interest thing is, its encouraging to just take of your shoes, lean back onto the soft cushions and just relax and chill. So we did. But can you imagine if somebody had smelly feet?
Food wise
---------
Choice of dessert were surprisingly not to my expectation. I had thot that with its name, there will be a WIDE SELECTION of interesting and entising desserts. But to my dismay, that is not the case. Fortunately they did have interesting names and descriptions to each dessert, even the waiter would explain what you are about to have before you dig in to the melting sorbet.
Galfren ordered the Chocolate Tart : Turned out quite nice and appetising, prolly due to the Blood Orange Sorbet. The combination of the Blood Orange Sorbet and Dark choc tart gave it an interesting twist. The tart was definitely DARK CHOC. Break the top of the tart and it oozes of Premium Dark Choc that was not too sweet, just right, just the way I like it. Both are bold in taste, but neither was overpowering of one another. I would have to say that it was pretty worth it, tho costly and small serves. I think it was $14. A bold and less sinful dessert.
Because I wanted to have something different and less chocolatey, I ordered the Cheesecake: What a unique impression of a cheesecake. It was a relatively large serve compared to the REST of the desserts that I had seen on other tables. Don't be fooled by the name "Cheesecake", cos its nothing like the usual ones you find, this ones like a foamy cheese mousse, coated with breadcrumbs and served with a scoop of grapefruit mousse, and a "PINCH" of kiwi fruit that was meant to be mangos. I have to say, I was pretty impressed by it, tho I hoped that the grapefruit mousse would be chilled instead of room temp, it was paired really well with the "cheesecake". The mild tangy taste of the grapefruit mousse blended smoothly with the light cheese mousse. This I think was $15 to $16 bucks. A light yet sinful dessert.
Both of us ordered hot tea each to wash down the sweets, I had the African detox and my fren had the Oolong, which she said was a little to bland or diluted. Instead mine was fragrant and aromathic.
Oh yes! They did have a WIDE SELECTION of WINE tho. But being not so Attas ourselves or alcoholics, we did not benefit much from their wine variety.
The BF came awhile ago to join us, wanted to have some supper, but decided to head down to Brekos instead, since they prolly have nicer, filling and more affordable meals to satisfy the hungered.
Service wise
-------------
All staff were patient, soft spoken and friendly. I think the lady that served was the boss or something, she was friendly and honest about the portions of their desserts tho. She was also patient enough to describe to us about how each dish was like, gave us time to decide and then camed back again afterwards.
Overall, I would have to say, that tho the dessert was interesting and arty fartily decorated, we kinda had to psycho ourselves that the effort and interesting concepts matches the price. I wonder if we were trying to match the food to the price; the effort to the price, or the price to the concoction. But its definitely worth the experience. |

| Doesn't deserve the hype
Went with a bunch of friends on a Saturday night because everyone was talking about it. All the sofa seats were taken so we were seated in the centre, around a countertop table on bar stools. Not my idea of chill.
As everyone has already said, desserts cost about $15 each, and a glass of wine will add another $15-$20. Personally I don't think that's very steep, but the place itself is not worth it. Maybe the ceiling is too low, but the acoustics were really bad. Had to strain to hear what my friends were saying across the table because the whole restaurant was so noisy.
The desserts themselves were quite good, but they feel expensive because the restaurant doesn't. You're basically paying $30 for dessert in what feels like Sakae Sushi - amateurish and cheap. Our group of six paid more for our desserts here than for our dinner at Monster Mash before that.
Also, note that the cheesecake takes half an hour to make - something they don't tell you when you order it, so you end up still waiting for your dessert when your entire party has finished and is ready to leave. |

| Minimum order bleh!
I had previously heard about 2am: Dessert Bar via word of mouth hence decided to try it out since I was dining at Holland V over the weekend.
I wish to point out that I did not get to sample their oh look so cute and delicate desserts at all. Here's why:
- Price is pretty appalling. At $15 a slice/pc of cake....I would have had to lick up every bit from the plate. More likely, my palate is not bred for such fine aka expensive delicacies hee
- However, since I was already there, I decided to bite the bullet that one time to try it out. My dining partner and I were duly informed that there was a minimum order of 1 item per patron. &^%*#%$!!!! I would at least attempt to understand the logic behind such 'rules' had the place been bustling with activities and patrons who ordered only 1 item but stayed for hours end...plus a long line of other patrons waiting to be seated. But the entire place was devoid of patrons except for 2~ 3 other tables. Was it necessary for such a 'rule'? The chef is far from reknown, not hitting under the belt but just stating a fact.
I decided there and then that the place is not for me and left. I had originally thought of returning on a weekday but nah.....I am sure there are other desserts avaliable at a more affordable price with friendlier policies.
Good for chillouts since its probably above most people's budget for desserts to hangout there :P |
