food average, nice ambience

Situated along East Coast Road. We parked at Joo Chiat Road. The place has a nostalgic ambience. I like the wooden tables and chairs with ceiling fan. It was lunch time but not crowded at all.

We ordered the Hakka Yong Tau foo set. It comes with soup, noodles with minced meat, and a few pieces of Yong Tau foo. I thought the taste was bland, nothing fantastic, I have eaten better. It cost $6.90 per set. It you order 2 sets , discount of $2.

We also order the abacus seed which was recommended in this forum. It was not delicious and quite bland. We ended up with almost a whole uneaten plate.

Don't think I will be back here again. Food is average.

G. value!

I must thank the earlier reviewers for recommending this place.

I tried out their Hakka Abacus Beads, Salt & Wine Chicken and Hakka Yong Tau Foo with my friends. All were really good, really authentic, considering the price we were paying. Thumbs up!

Before this, I used to frequent this Hakka joint at Upper Thomson road, but sori I couldn't remember the name as it was quite sometime ago.

Thank you again, folks, now I got one more option up my sleeve.

Better go buy 4D

The 1st reviewer has a member ID number of 6833.
The 2nd reviewer has a member ID number of 6834.
The 3rd reviewer has a member ID number of 6837.

All 3 reviews are in consecutive order in the whole HGW sequence.

The sheer coincidence of it all is simply mind-boggling. The Hokkien phrase for this phenomenon would be 'teoh beh beoh poon boh arh nee joon'.

place for hakka food lovers

What impresses me is the variety of food available. They offer a reasonable range for consumers, from finger food to main set meals.

The yong tau foo and noodles are very tasty. However, the soup is always not hot, wonder why. I did not try the other set meals but they look good to me. My friends tried and no bad comments so i assumed they are at least decent;) However, the pricing for the yong tau foo is rather steep considering the serving portion(maybe its just me) and comparing it to its counterparts except maybe for during weekdays when there is a $2 discount whenever 2 sets are ordered.

The Hakka Abacus Beads and Soon Kuey you must try, especially the Soon Kuey. But then it has since shrunk in size(WHY?!). Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....I will still order it though.

And to unspoken, I am not so sure the toilet is " the cleanest you have ever been". Clean, yes. Cleanest, Defintely Not =)

Overall, it is worth the occasional indulgence...

Must Tries: Soon Kuey

Authentic and Sumptuous!

I was recommended to this place by a food-lover friend, and we've been eating there at least once a week since.

The service is excellent, and the place is very clean considering that it's at Katong.

I rarely eat at Katong area because of the distance (I live in Bishan), but there's something homely about this place, and I keep wanting to eat at 99 Kim Heng Hakka Yong Tau Foo again and again.

You definitely must try the Handmade Noodles with Mushrooms & Minced Meat. Better than Bak Chor Mee in my opinion.
