Dishonest promoter gave us a bad experience

01 Jul 2012
We were asking about crab pries at the restaurants along Boat Quay. We specifically wanted a small portion for two people. When we passed Bali Island Indonesian Restaurant, the promoter, whose name is Rajveer, told us that all the restaurants along Boat Quay charge the same price of $5 per kilogram of crabs, and that she will give us a 20% discount if we ate at her restaurant. So we decided to eat there.

Once seated and after choosing our items, we ordered. We were then told by the waitress that they did not have small crab portions - only medium (1.7kg) or large (2kg). This as STRIKE 1 by the promoter Rajveer, who neglected to inform us that the restaurant didn't have small portions when we specifically mentioned we wanted that. Anyway, we told the waitress taking our order that Rajveer had told us they have small crab portions, and the waitress called Rajveer to come and "handle" us. We felt deceived that she hadn't told us about the lack of small crab portions, but we decided to order a 1.7kg portion of Chili Crabs anyway; since we were already seated. We felt that with the 20% discount, the price would be reasonable.

The Chili Crabs came and we must say that the sauce was a bit too sour and runny. The flesh of the crab tasted a bit too fishy and not fresh... it wasn't fragrant and flavourful, as expected of crabs in Singapore seafood restaurants like Long Beach, No Signboard, and zi char stalls. We are Singaporeans afterall and know what a good dish of Chili Crabs should taste like.

We called for the bill and were surprised to see that the crabs were charged at full price, while the chicken and vegetables we ordered was given 20% discount. This was NOT what was communicated and promised by Rajveer. STRIKE 2.

We spoke to Rajveer who then explained that 1.7kg crabs were charged at $6 per kilo, while 1.5kg crabs were charged at $5 per kilo. She said that she had given us a discount by charging us the 1.7kg at $5 per kilo. However, note that when she solicited our business outside the restaurant, she hadn't mentiond about the price difference in crab portions. So of course, we were expecting to be charged $5 per kilo regardless of size, and get the 20% discount. Furthermore, we had wanted to order the 1.5kg portion but they didn't have it.

We explained our perspective to her calmly. We just wanted to know why she deceived us twice - Firstly by neglecting to mention that they don't serve small crab portions, and secondly by neglecting to mention that the 20% discount she offered did not apply to crab dishes. Rajveer got defensive and told us to have some manners. She also claimed she had been honest with us. At this point, we couldn't be bothered to argue with her anymore as clearly, she wasn't going to apologise or admit she had lied. We paid the bill and spoke to the Manager, who explained the same logic about charging us only $5 for the 1.7kg crabs. He was polite to us and apologised for the bad experience. However he did not sound like he was going to take action or train Rajveer properly to stop deceiving customers.

Our experience at this restaurant wasn't altogether terrible - The rest of the staff were polite to us, and the food was average. We just feel that Rajveer is a terrible tout, misleading customers with false information and promises just to hook them into the restaurant. And then when questioned about it, she doesn't seem to think that she's doing anything wrong. Rajveer will probably go on at that restaurant in Boat Quay, deceiving local Singaporeans and tourists alike.
