The Upper Thomson area has enjoyed popularity for offering  different F&B choices. Ice cream parlours are no strangers here, with Salted Caramel, Udders, NeLi and Scoopz within the shophouses. One of the earliest tenants of the area, Brownice, is located further inwards, within Sin Ming Centre, which specializes in ice cream made from all natural, egg-free and non-dairy products.

Satisfying my waffle cravings, I ordered the Waffles with Peanut Butter Chocolate ($7.30; $3.80 for waffles, $3.50 for 1 scoop). The waffles is crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. The Peanut Butter Chocolate accompanying it, while trying to strike a balance between both flavours, tasted more chocolatey than the peanut butter taste.

Anyone can enjoy the ice cream here without feeling guilty due to the nature of the contents. If you are around the Sin Ming / Upper Thomson area, this is one spot that should not be missed.

Ice cream for vegan!

if you have allergies to dairy products or you are a vegan, you've got to try the ice cream here. It is make from rice. Easy on your tummy and waistline too! You got to try their Mao Shan Wang Durian Ice Cream, it is heavenly, as if you have swallowed the whole fruit into your mouth. It is pretty amazing that there's no dairy found in all the ice cream here, yet they all taste like normal ice cream but just a little diluted compare to the gelato. They have a quirky flavour that is Madagascar Vanilla, you can ask to taste before you order, not the normal vanilla ice cream, it has a stronger smell of the spice compare to the normal vanilla. The chocolate ice cream is wonderful too! Remember there's no dairy; it all depends on the rice milk that they grind from the rice grains, yet the ice cream can have the same feel like the normal dairy ones. Who says vegans are boring? They too can enjoy dessert like us but sin free! Come and grab them before it is gone!

From Thomson to East Coast.. from vegan ice cream to vegan lunch with porcini mushrooms

After trying rich, tasty durian and pumpkin coconut ice cream we got a hint that there is another outlet called Brownice Italian Bistro at 55 East Coast Road. Went there to check what else is to offer as menu supposes to be extended. As we like old stylish shop houses more than shopping centres we found it to be relaxing and with a more nostalgic spirit of Singapore. The wooden tables and decorated walls altogether with nice service staff accounted to great experience. Back to food we ordered Aranchini for a start. It was served in a deep ceramic plate with a rich thick tomato sauce and two large and tasty veganballs.  Menu focus on traditional Italian dishes but all are vegan. Next item on our table was mushroom pizza. Unlike all common mushroom pizzas this one has premium Italian porcini mushrooms (not as gigantic http://monicawilde.com/giganticporcini) and truffle among all its ingredients. The crispy dough is rich with nutrients and flavour. Next we got lasagne traditionally baked with great meat replacements like eggplant and tofu all topped up with thick sauce. At the end to get some sweet treat we ordered vegan brownie. This one was above the top piping with chocolate and nutty flavour.

Our first trip to Brownice at Thomson was a really memorable experience. The server recommended the dark chocolate flavour, and we ordered it not knowing what to expect. The taste is unlike anything that you would expect! Sure, it tastes like ice cream, but without the milk and the cream, it tastes pretty different for sure. Personally I am a fan of brown rice – it is something I eat almost everyday for health reasons. I was hoping that brown rice ice cream would be something delicious.

I wasn’t disappointed! The dark chocolate ice cream from Brownice grows on you. After that unique taste from the first bite, the second bite grows on you and soon you will enjoy it like any other ice cream. One scoop leads to the next and you wish that you had more!

visit was in jun 2014, still open. yes, chocolate was nice. rich and bold, total indulgence. vanilla was totally off. vanilla was sharp and overbearing, texture slightly flaky. salted caramel slightly too salty, was okay. very silent except for radio pop music. tissue on table, self serve water. did not appreciate the extremist vegan dialectic, which was just a step below Ariana Grande calling milk 'cow t** pus'.

Ice-cream substitutes take the spotlight

All that food we've been having - we went for a lunchtime run today to burn some of it off. Not wanting to negate our workout yet still wanting a treat, we settled for this dairy-free vegan double chocolate cookie ice-cream made from organic brownrice ($3.80 + $0.80 because it's a premium flavour). It's not as creamy as ice-cream made without substitutes, but Brownice definitely makes up for the lack of cream with robust chocolate flavours and chewable texture.
