Expected much much more from this Canberra institution. Despite their slightly threatening confirmation email (failure to show up or notify the restaurant in advance may affect your ability to secure future bookings at The Chairman Group restaurants), our table was not ready when we turned up exactly on time.
In fact, there was no table for us at all (8.30pm booking). Luckily, one group left a few minutes later which saved the scrambling staff. And then we waited for menus, not realising that they were printed and stuck into the first few pages of an art magazine, 3 of which were were casually lying on the table. A tad pretentious, but ok.
And the food, well, it was nice. The duck pancakes were ok, chicken wontons a waste of time - tiny and could only taste the chilli; he spicy lamb was very good, the barramundi special was good, the "signature dish" of beef and scallops hot pot was, to our taste, the least successful.
We loved that we could bring our own wine for a reasonable corkage fee, but the $200 for 2 entrees and 3 mains (which fed 3 people just fine) was not value for money. I feel this place is trading off it's long-time reputation and it now falls short.
