Bak Kut Teh at Roti Prata Road

20 Oct 2012
I notice a while back that there is a Bak Kut Teh ('BKT') place pop up along Jalan Kayu. The road that are more renown for Roti Prata instead of any other type of food. Best of all, this shop has a positive story behind it.

As there were 8 of us, 6 adult and 2 kids we decided to order 2 medium size BKT, Ginger Sesame Chicken, Braised Trotter, Braised Intestines, Youtiao, and salted vegetables. The BKT and chicken served in claypot, while the rest in a normal bowl.

So how is the BKT? New Soon Huat BKT version of BKT is more towards the herbal version instead of the peppery. The taste of herbs almost similar to Klang version of BKT, however it lack of depth of taste compare to the Klang version. Its kind of stuck in between herbal or peppery. Luckily the serving is quite generous and the meat of the BKT is tender.

The braised small intestines is quite nice. It is clean and tender. It does not taste bitter, powdery or even foul smell when it is not clean properly. So two thumbs up for them. The Sesame Chicken and Braised Trotter is good. They are fragrant and the meat is tender.

Overall standard of the food is good, the only thing that I hope the management will look into is when topping up the soup for the BKT, make sure it is pipping hot. They top up ours twice, but the soup is only warm. It really spoils the taste of the BKT and the youtiao when you dunk it in. So next time, pipping hot soup = nice BKT.

The shop is decorated simply with wooded table and chairs. On the wall you can see the photos of their dishes, the newspaper article of the story of the shop and also the list of herbs and benefits of the herbs that they use in their BKT.

Service is friendly, good and efficient. They do not charge GST and Service Tax, so they really deliver value for money. Crowd turnover is also fast, so you won't have to wait for long.

Overall, if you are near Jalan Kayu, give this place a try. They are good, value for money but not yet at the same level as the Klang BKT, Song Fa BKT or Outram Ya Hua BKT.

Delicious & inexpensive!

17 Jun 2012
A no-frills establishment, the New Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh serves up delicious and affordable bak kut teh.

After coming here twice, I am a big fan! The BKT is not overly peppery nor herbally, it strikes a good balance. There are plenty of pork ribs per serving and they are all cooked to a soft consistency. If you like liver, the BKT has some in it. Although I don't like the smell or taste of liver, I find that I could just leave the liver alone - it doesn't flood the soup of liver taste. For a portion for 2 persons, it's a good price of $11.80 and the soup is refillable on request, which is very important when you're having BKT!

We also tried the braised pig trotters and sesame chicken. Both are excellent and compliment the BKT.

If you like otah, you can also buy the otah from another shop a few doors down, and you're allowed to eat them with the BKT. Very nice gesture.

A bummer would be that it's quite warm to sit within the inside of the shop, it's considerably cooler outside. But still, with the low price and excellent quality of the food, it is hardly a deterrent. We were a group of 7 for dinner and our total bill (excluding drinks) came up to be around $50. A very good bargain! :)

On a social note, the shop was started by an ex-prisoner and also employs ex-convicts. You can read about their story here:

Bak Kut Teh with a difference in more ways than one ...

    02 Jan 2012
This Bak Kut Teh shop comes with a great story. If one hasn't read it yet, then here's the article.

But it's all about the food here on hungrygowhere. And it's really good. :-)

Most of the Bak Kut Tehs out there have either a very peppery broth or Klang style herbal broth. Most times, then pepper or the herbs overpower the underlying taste of all other ingredients. In this case though, the broth here is a very good blend, where one can taste the herbs that blends with, not overpowering, the bak kut and garlic flavours. The meats fall off the bones nicely too. While there are some who will prefer that it is more peppery or herbal, my own opinion is that this one's got it quite right.

The other stuff in the menu are quite nice too and not overpriced. The 'chai wei' is again, well balanced in taste, as is the tau pok and popular ginger sesame chicken.

But its all about the Bak Kut Teh ... I've been here twice in the past month, and I'd come back here for more very soon.
