Great neighbourhood joint, good pizzas, amazing desserts
05 Jul 2012This is set up by a chap who also happens to be a food importer. You know those burrata that have been invading all the Italian restos around town - yes, he's the one. It's very Italian - with some, but few concessions for the Singapore taste (sweeter, saltier etc). So all you asswipes that eat at Pastamania, can p*** off as this place is not something you'd appreciate.
So, there is the burrata with parama ham and cherry tomatoes to start - $17 - very resonable considering the burrata is 250gm monster. Only complaint is that I like a bit more flavour - maybe truffle or more salt or more pepper but in Italy. all they have is a bit of salt and pepper.
The pizza was good - very decent, crisp, soft crust, $18 with fresh tomatoes, mince meat and peperroni. The husband thought the tomato flavour could be stronger....but overall it was fine. It's a large pizza - with 8 substansial slices.
And the piece de resistance was the florentine white chocolate, pressed on us by the owner. S** on a plate. The owner of the shop in florence is a personal frind of the owner, with almost all of his production going to Japan apart from the odd pieces that make it to the shop. Lush, rich - not to sweet with the aroma of bitter orange peel, it set of the dry overoaked charddonay to perfection.
A bellissima finish to the meal.

Authentic Italian fare in neighbourhood setting
18 Dec 2011I have been refraining from writing about this little gem for fear of it getting too crowded....but oh well, there's been no reviews as yet so it's an injustice too! So, here we go :)
It's located in Ghim Moh, a smallish neighbourhood opposite buona vista and around 10mins stroll from holland village. Owner is from Sicily and he co-owns another Italian eatery in a more atas location.
Pricing wise, ala carte is almost the same as any other Italian restaurants in dempsey/holland village/portsdown. They do serve value for money set lunches but we have yet to try any.
Do not scoff at the fact that they charge almost same prices even though they are located in neighbourhood block. Fact is their food is on par, if not at times surpassing those serve in places like Picotin or Soprano.
We usually order their pizza (15.90 to 18.90), enough to share between 2 adults. The pizza are all good, really love their pork pepperoni! If we have more people, we can also have the spaghetti, and all time fav. is ALWAYS the squid ink pasta! It is VERY GOOD! It's not just squid ink pasta, but it's cooked in squid ink broth too.
One main draw for us is this - their home made fire hot Sicilian chilli flakes! Really devilish and goes so well with the pizza.
As for the desserts, tiramisu and lava cake are our hands down favourites, freshly made everyday.
The BEST way to finish off the meal will be their ‘shooters’, which come in 3 flavors – Grappa (the best), limoncello (ladies’ drink), and sambuca (highest alcohol content abt 40%). Lovely!
The people there are all very relaxed and very nice, great service throughout. Do give it a try if you are in the vicinity.
