Spirited Sessions: The Merry Men

We all know how lovely it is to have a scenic stroll down Robertson Quay and Clarke Quay, but more often than not, your legs get a little tired. You’d crave for a clean spot to have a seat and order some munchies to chow on, before washing it all down with some drinks that are tinged with alcohol. We know what it’s like, and clearly, The Merry Men know as well.

Serving up a whole spectrum of cocktails that range from being mild to absolutely potent(and we mean potent), as well as some delightful finger food, this is a great spot with a terrific view of the serene Singapore River. Let’s just hope the weather is on your side.

Blackforest Mojito - $14

Rum, Mint leaves, Blackberry, Raspberry and Blueberry. I don’t know whether it’s the miniature jug that it comes in, or the combination of tiny seeds from the 3 different berries in this concoction that I just love chewing on. Either way, I drank three when I was at The Merry Men during the Simply Shimona showcase, and I just knew I had to feature this drink. Whilst tasting it again, of course. As refreshing as a mojito should be, plus the whole berry craze going on in that jug.

Strawberry Margarita - $14

Tequila and Cointreau with Strawberry. I know exactly what you’re thinking. “Oh my god“, are probably the words. The look of this drink should be enough to seal the deal, but just for the kicks of it, I’ll assure you that it tastes just as great as it looks. The striking red colour of this frozen drink just makes you want to slurp it all up at once, and I almost did. Yet another fantastic cocktail that I’d definitely order the next time I go to The Merry Men.

Lychee Martini - $14

Vodka, Lychee Liqueur and Lychee Syrup. After the first two cocktails, this one didn’t really have a chance. Not to the degree of it paling in comparison to the other two, but simply because it didn’t stand out in looks like the Strawberry Margarita, and sound as exotic as the Blackforest Mojito. Nonetheless, there are no flaws that I’ll point out in this cocktail, so lovers of Lychee Martini, you know what your choice of poison should be!

Our first round of drinks!

Shoestring Truffle Fries - $10

Shoestring fries tossed with white truffle oil, truffle salt, parsley, and served with some truffle scented mayonnaise. Might sound like there’s an overload of truffle essence in this dish, but the mayonnaise didn’t give me any hit of truffle, and in fact helped to smooth out the heavy punch of truffle. Lovers of truffle fries, this will be heaven in a mess tin for you guys. Of course, who doesn’t love a generous bowl of mayonnaise to...

eat, drink and be at merry

    27 Feb 2012
Didn't have a good start at this place. They lost a reservation that was placed just hours before. But we were there early (before 7pm), so managed to get an outdoor table anyway.

For food, we had squid ink pasta, bangers and mash and buffalo wings. Personally, I'd prefer squid ink pasta ala spaghetti but here uses tagliatelle. Bangers and mash, were just good old comfort food. Buffalo wings surprised me, as its sauce was not the usual buffalo wings sauce that I've ever tasted. The blue cheese dip was good. Not too overpowering. Smelled truffle fries on other tables. We didn't order it though.

For drinks, they have Asahi Happy Hour (till 8pm) of buy 3 get 1 free. Beers on draught, at roughly $12 per pint or $28-$36 per jug, depending on the type. Three types to choose from (Australian and New Zealand beer).

Personally, I'd recommend the Kopparberg cider. Yums.

Service throughout the night was fair. Orders were taken, food and drinks were delivered and bill payment settled within reasonable time.

Currently, there's a 10% discount off total bill when paying via OCBC credit card.

    Indoor Seating was Squeezy

    20 Feb 2012
Considering that the mains were around $20 nett, pricing was reasonable for the quality and quantity. In fact, I found the smoked salmon salad to be value for money. At only $12 nett, the amount of salmon given was generous.

We tried the beef lasagne, crab meat aglio olio, mushroom pizza, roasted duck pizza, buffalo wings, and smoked salmon salad.

The roasted duck pizza is an interesting creation made up of roasted duck with peking duck sauce and lychees. It is rather filling so don't try to order it on top of your mains.

The pastas are acceptable. Found the ingredients for pasta to be too little though. Buffalo wings turned soggy after a while and didn't look appetizing at all so the whole basket was almost left untouched.

The servers were existent but not always around so sometimes we had to wait to get their attention and also had to rearrange the chairs ourselves when a new table was added to our existing squeezy set-up.

The ambience outdoor was boisterous, seemed like a beautiful place when I first arrived. However, I couldn't take the cigarette smoke and decided to move indoors. There was a huge low seating table, another huge high seating table, and another 20 or so regular height seats were being squeezed in a corner. I was inside that squeezy section and it got really uncomfortable when a huge group arrived and sat behind. Our chairs were so close I felt trapped.

It's a place with reasonable food and prices, nice ambience to some who enjoy the riverside thing, but no compelling reason for me to want to visit again.
