Sharing the premises with two other Japanese eateries, Uomasa serves a variety of Japanese items from grilled niblets to sashimi.
A simple casual setting, I started with the Tsukune ($5.80), a Japanese minced meat chicken that was rather tasty.
Another starter I tried was the Cheese Scallop ($9). Unfortunately, the cheese was too strong and it overpowered it to the point that I could not taste the minced scallops.
I also had the Salmon Mentaiko ($9). I must say that this is one of the better ones that I have tried as it had a good balance of saltiness from the cod roe and the salmon was cooked perfectly, with a nice crisp on the outside.
I then had the Chirashi Jyu ($16.80), which included prawn, white fish, salmon belly, mackerel, egg, salmon roe and tuna - quite a good variety for this price point and the fish had a good level of freshness too.
Another main course I tried was the Salmon and Roe Pot ($15). This is one dish to forget as it takes 30 mins to prepare and it ended up being too mushy and overcooked for my liking. It is the first time I have tasted what overcooked salmon roe tastes like (which is like salmon by the way).
Overall though, food had its hits and misses. The quality of the raw items were good, but one has to be prepared to pay a little bit more than usual.
Service was top notch - a rarity in these kinds of casual eateries. The manager made efforts to accommodate when they saw that I was dining with a baby and food was served at an efficient pace.
Must tries: Salmon Mentaiko
