  1. Hot Night in Bangkok!

    Jun 8, 2007
    Sawadee Ka!

Prudence dictates that one's stomach must be filled with food first before beer. This was exactly the reason why SSP and his mates from Jurong West Avenue 4 have decided to eat at this Thai joint first before adjourning to Geylang Lorong 28 for some Singha beer and Thai poultry.

The theme last night was, obviously, Thai.

The gang arrived at about 9pm. The joint was nondescript. The ambience was unremarkable but who cares.

The outdoor dining area was packed with couples who didn't smoke. Bloody morons! They probably preferred the romantic view of buses along Upper East Coast Road than the comfort of an air-con dining area.

Inside, the decor was non-existent. But again, time was short. A quick scan of the joint revealed no delectable waitresses. Only Thai aunties and uncles going about their business of cleaning the plates and clearing the tables.

This is wrong. Thais arn't supposed to look like that. The gang was anxious to fill their stomach quickly so as to make their way to Lorong 28 for some real Thais. They ordered Tom Yum Goong, Green Kwei Curry, Red Duck Curry, Morning Glory with Thai Sauce, Prawn Cakes and of course, lime juice.

The food turned out to be gastro-orgasmic. Tom Yum tasted like Tom Yum, Green Curry like Green Curry, Duck like Duck, Veg like Veg. Special mention must be made of the juicy Prawn Cakes. The sweet juice trickled into the mouth as soon as SSP took the first bite, almost as if it was a premonition of what was to come.

Although the lime juice didn't taste like lime juice at all, it deserves a special mention. Served in crushed ice, the lime juice was a refreshiing change from the usual sourish kind. Not sweet, not sour, not limey. In fact, why was it even called lime juice!?!

10pm. The gang could hear Lorong 28 beckoning. Paid the bill ($78) and scooted off for some ice cold Singha beer and hot warm Thai embrace.

p/s Forgot about the Keropok! Try it with the chili. Works like an aphrodisiac!
    Must Tries

Keropok, Tom Yum Goong, Green Curry, Thai Chicken!

    • Air-con coffeeshop setting with hotel pricing

      Aug 4, 2008
At my wife's whim, we decided to try out this restaurant for the first time.
Food :-To be fair, food was not too bad, however, it is certainly not outstanding nor really that authentic, considering it was run by a thai family.
Ambience :- Think coffee-shop zi-char version of thai food (eg. Magic Wok). Ambience is comparable to Magic Wok. Not fanciful, no uniform staff, plain plastic plates and cups (like what u get as free gifts banded with toothpaste or detergent, etc).
Price :- The portion, ambience, taste certainly do not fit that kind of premium prices on the menu. It is one of the most over-priced restaurant I have come across for a long while. For that, I give its value rating a 0.1, simply because it can't go lower. One plate of honey chicken enough for 2 costs about $18++. Crab Tung Hoon at $18.50, comes in a small claypot. The empty crab shell and big slice of ginger already took up close to 35% of the claypot. one claw and two legs barely filled with flesh and some tung hoon completed the dish. Not worth at all, if u asked me. Same goes for the Tom Yum Soup, which costs more than $10 easily. Just 3 dishes, 1 iced tea & 1 dessert (Red Ruby) did us in for $60. For a few bucks more, we could have had that same meal in a upper market Thai outlet with that kind of same or better food quality.
Service :- Just one top up of water throughout the meal and it was a miserable small cup that I can easily finish in one gulp. It also took a while after we sat down on a table before the waiting staff gave us a menu. Not professional but not hostile either.
Recommendations :- I recommend that you don't waste your time on this place especially if you leave far away. Its just simply not worth the trip. Spend the money on a upmarket Thai restaurant instead, you wont be worse off by much. It beats me how this place can survive for so long. We Singaporeans must be starved of new eating places to go to.

      • A Thai Enigma

        Jan 27, 2008
I'm not sure I've ever been to a restaurant as schizo as this - it looks really down-market, serves great food, disproportionally expensive, poor to no service, extremely popular. I guess in a way, that sums up Singapore food culture.
Went there with some friends last week after work - someone suggested A-roy (which means delicious in Thai) along East Coast Road - it's roughly between Pasta Fresca Del Salvatore and Big Fish. Not hard to find, but just keep an eye open when you drive by East Coast Rd.
The restaurant was pretty empty when we got there at 7pm, they have a few chairs and tables arranged like many eateries you see in Geylang with not much else in furnishing. We ordered the cotton fish with julienned mango, the garlic fried rice, phad thai, basil leaf pork, tunghoon claypot and green curry. No tomyam coz two of us had tummy bugs and were not fully recovered. In brief, the food was fantastic - Thai Express, LerkThai, Lemongrass, Patara Thai and all the rest of you guys out there who might see this, take my advice...visit this place and buy out the owner. Whoever does it first is gonna win the mass-market thai segment.
We enjoyed our meal tremendously - incidentally, we were there when they had those little fruit sculptures made with some kind of gelatin and stuffed with green bean paste - we bought the whole lot (super good, super expensive) and bummed off to a one of our homes for dessert.
Price-wise, we paid $167 for 5 of us. Ouch!!! I've had more expensive meals before, which weren't as good, but at least we were served in matching plates, on table-clothed tables with real legs, had waiters topping our water automatically - the whole works. The rent on this place can't be that exhorbitant, so they must really be creaming big time. And by the looks of it, they're doing very well - rich east coast people obvously don't baulk at these prices for a "foot-on-stool" makan out.
The service element was the least Thai-like experience of all - many of the waiting staff were Thai I think, but they seemed to have lost that Thai quality of friendliness - these guys looked like they were engaging the enemy or something.
I'll be back on special occassions (like a promotion)or if someone else pays - but for now, I'll just block-out the yuk parts and concentrate on remembering the dreamy food!

        1. Only Truly Authentic Thai in Singapore

          Dec 6, 2009
Folks, if you want ambience and creative Thai Food... go to Orchard Road or some trendy Thai place. If you want authentic Thai cooking, come out east to A-Roy. This is a basic Thai place with food that a friend said to me... "if I didn't know better, I would have thought we were in Bangkok." The prices are a little higher than expected for the atmosphere, however, the food makes up for that.

          • Feeding A Following

            Aug 3, 2009
After eating at many Thai restaurants, I have concluded that good Thai food in Singapore is generally expensive, particularly if you are a Singaporean.

Here at A-Roy Thai, it is no different. A very simple setting, this kitchen offers a good variety of Thai Chinese food and has a strong following.

I had a small bowl of Tom Yam Seafood ($12.90), which was authentically spicy. Then I tried the Kang Kong ($10.90) which once again was full of chilli.

The Pooja stuffing ($4) was quite nice and the Stuffed Chicken Wing ($3.90) tasty as well.

Overall, if you are looking for a simple place to have dinner, this is probably not a bad choice if you like spicy food. What was interesting though was that I was surrounded by people who were having business dinners - I am not sure if I would bring my business associates here.

            • +++food, $$$$prices

              Jun 23, 2009
Went for dinner on Friday night.
Been craving Thai food for ages and this was my favourite Thai restaurant growing up.
Short of going down to Golden Mile (which I wouldn't on a Friday night), this is probably the last bastion of authentic Thai food in Singapore.
              Service was fine, no complaints.
The food was wonderful. We had the claypot prawn tanghoon, tomyum soup and the minced-meat/crab cakes. I absolutely loved the prawn crackers they served as appetizers (especially dipped in that wonderful chilli)
Everything was delicious. The flavours were just like I remember them.
The portions though... Maybe I was much smaller and looking at the portions from the hungry eyes of a child, but I remember them being much larger when I was younger.
I definitely remember the crab shells being much bigger and the tomyum soup coming in a bigger bowl.
The bill also hurt a lot less (considering I was a child and didn't have to pay).
Guess with adulthood comes adult responsibilities (like paying that rather expensive bill). All things considered, the bill wasn't that expensive ($60 for 2). I guess it all boils down to if one was satisfied post-meal. I certainly was (though I definitely wish it were cheaper or came in larger portions)

                Jan 12, 2009
We returned to A roy Thai for a second visit. Very impressed with the food, It is fresh and tasty with great textures and flavours.

I felt the food was well worth the price as the unique flavours made it a cut above other Thai restaurants in Singapore and Melbourne I have tried.

OK the decor is plain, but the restaurant is clean and popular, we got the last table on Saturday as the place was full of Singaporeans and their families.

I think this place is well worth a visit if you like tasty fresh well sized portions. The dishes go well beyond the usual tried and tired curries stirfries and noodle dishes.

                  Oct 26, 2008
I learnt two new things dining at A-Roy. Firstly, the name means delicious and secondly good things come at a price. I went there with my family today for lunch - it's a very basic eatery, but pretty well located just after Siglap. Parking is a little bit of a problem - apparently, you can't park outside because the car dealership has first dibs on it, so we parked about 50m into a side road after the centre-line ended.
Their typical Thai dishes like Cotton Fish with julienned mango, tom yum kung, prawns with tung hoon, garlic fried rice and fish cake are fabulous. Possibly the best I've had in Singapore. The prices, however are very steep - without dessert and drinks, it cost us $26 per person. In a proper restaurant, this would be reasonable, but the ambience was bare basic and it felt more like eating in a coffee shop environment than a restaurant.
                  Overall experience was good though.

Isnt a rating of 1 a bit extreme? Iv seen A-Roy b4 and while it doesnt warrant a rating of 10 or even 7 but 1 is a bit mean. And you did mention that the food was good so probably the amount you're paying is for the food .

Hey Mac, I was a peeved by the bill and value-proposition. And the 1 rating for ambience was a bit mean-spirited I admit - I'll edit that to a 4. But the service really was wanting and non-existant, so have to keep it to the 1. Hope that's more acceptable. And Yes, I think the food (cooking technique) was great, but since you've been there before, you'll have to admit it's not as obvious as say paying for expensive ingredients like Wagyu Beef, shark's fin or goose liver.

Decided to go for thai food and the first restaurant that came to my mind was A-roy Thai at East coast road.

Brought back many fond memories and I realised I have been going to this restaurant for more than 7 years!

It was quite packed and we had to sit al fresco area. The service was rather slow and almost non existent.

                    1. Yam thakrai - a lemon grass with fried shrimps - its heaven... the sauce and the combination of lemongrass with onions and shrimp is so good. Very wonderful appetitzer.

                    2. Green curry - Just the right amount of oil and the gravy is not too thick or limp like some restaurants.

                    3. Pad thai - Only grouse is that portion is too small..

                    4. Vege with roasted pork - nothing spectacular.

                        • Easier on the stomach not on the pocket

                          Oct 13, 2007
I used to eat at this restaurant when it first opened years back - it was hands-down the best Thai fare one can find in Singapore. Moving back East after a 6 year stint in Bt Timah (where incidentally the Thai food selection is pretty good), I found myself lured back by memories of great Thai food. I wasn't dissapointed. It's still outathisworld. One must ask why we didn't make the half hour trip for the food these last few years....had kids lah! Anyway, everything from the cotton fish (smothered with juliened Mango) to the tomyam was as fantastic as I remembered and even the walls I think haven't been painted since then. The owner, A Thai (was ex-national bowler) and her sisters are behind this and she mentioned they also have another at Funan (never noticed it). The only thing's changed are the prices - the bill was $82 for the two of us - quite sobering after the dreamy meal. I'll be back, but must save before then.

                          • what's better than perfect?

                            Jul 6, 2007
Man, this restaurant is probably the best thai restaurant in SG. My favourite so far. Don't miss the green curry ($11). Best green curry you can ever get in sg. Served with white rice...I can eat this everyday!!!

Phat Thai ($7), is a narrow version of hor fun noodle, another favourite dish is served with 4 bowls (if I remember correctly) of different kind of toppings, including grated peanuts. You can help yourself with these toppings. I felt so tempted to dump the whole bowl of grated peanuts to my noodle!!! The noodle itself is so perfect in taste and aroma. I like the subtle sweetness that this dish offers.

Tried the stir fry asparagus, beef kway teow, fish maw soup, chicken wrapped in pandan leave. All of them r delicious!!

SAVE some empty space in your stomach for the dessert!!! The desserts here r really to die for. Sweet steamed tapioca in coconut milk ($4), Red Ruby drink($4),...and of course, durian glutinous rice ($10). The warmed sweet glutinous rice eaten with the best quality durian...yummy!!!

Chef, owner, and assistant are thais. So it is the authentic thai food.
Be warned though, the restaurant itself is quite ugly. They just put tables and chairs. White painted walls, cheap tiles.....This place is more like for family dinner....not for romantic dinner.

But there's no doubt abt how excellent the food is!!
