| aka TURKISH CUISINE
This place is listed as Agora the Mediteranean, but the sign is actually "Turkish Cuisine" -- something you might want to remember if you are not familiar with the area.
Went there one lazy Saturday afternoon and it was quiet, (was the only table there until a large extended family group arrived) although I hope its business keeps up so it is able to stay open and provide diners in the east with more food options :)
The quality of food was above average -- I really enjoyed the falafel balls which sat on a bed of hummus. The pita bread was crispy and warm. The kebabs were slightly disappointing because the meat was drier than we would have liked it.
Service staff are eager to please and attentive but hovered a little too anxiously around us which irritated us a wee bit.. Otherwise it was a good experience and will head down to try more stuff soon. |

| A Taste of Turkey
My fiance & I had a wonderful holiday in Turkey last Oct. Imagine our delight when we chanced upon this authentic Turkish restaurant, which allowed us to reminisce on our wonderful trip.
My fiance & I were hungry and despairing as to where we can find food and parking around the siglap area at 8pm on a Saturday night. Then a 'Turkish Cuisine' sign caught my attention, and I could spot empty seats as we drove pass the restaurant. Parking was a little more difficult to find...we ended up parking outside my future mother-in-law's house, which turned out to be a convenient 5 min walk across from the restaurant.
Interestingly (and rather confounding), the restaurant is actually called Agora The Mediterranean, but the signboard (& business card) only says Turkish cuisine. The restaurant is on the small side, but there's some outside seating available. It was never completely filled up, even on a weekend night, and my fiancé & I kept wondering why, cos the food and service are both excellent. The only minus is the price of the meal. On our visit, there were only 3 tables of local customers. The rest of the customers were Japanese, Caucasians, Indians, etc, very cosmopolitan.
We started off with a lentil soup ($8.90), Sigara Boregi ($12.90), bread with Humus dip (8.90). The soup was slightly runny, but the Sigara Boregi was delicious! It’s like a thin spring roll (like a cigar), with feta cheese & herb filling. The bread was warm & fluffy, and the humus was thick & full of flavor. We ran out of bread, and resorted to spooning the humus straight into our mouths…what can I say, it’s too good to waste.
For the main course my fiancé had the Lamb Shank ($22.90) & I had the Baked Cod ($27.90). My fiancé thought the lamb shank was just satisfactory, not as enjoyable as the appetizers. I felt my baked cod was just slightly over-baked, but the creamy sauce was gorgeous!
I’m usually not into Turkish desserts (too sweet for my taste), and I was too full anyway, so I didn’t order dessert. My fiancé however, ordered the Kunefe ($14.90). It is a baked cheesy pastry in a sweet honey sauce. The top is made of a special kind of shredded dough, so that it looks like a round disc of fried thin vermicelli. Looked delicious, and I decided to try some…it was to die for!! The hot crunchy doughy top mixed with pistachio and cheese filling, plus the warm honey sauce…it was one of those desserts you now is too rich and sinful and too sweet, but you can’t help stuffing every bit into your mouth till you feel like puking anyway…classic examples: Marmalade Pantry’s sticky date toffee pudding, or Morton’s Godiva choc cake/ pudding thingy. Anyway, I ate as much of my fiancé’s pudding as he did, and we would have ordered another serving if we were not both stuffed to the brim.
So, in conclusion, though we didn’t order the best main dishes, and the restaurant is quite pricey, the appetizers, and for sure the Kunefe, will bring us back to the restaurant very soon. |

| Turkish Cuisine
Yes thats what the signboard says, not Agora. So if like my husband & me you drive down upper east coast looking for Agora, you will end up late for your booking!
We went there saturday night, & after the confusion about the name was cleared up had a lovely evening. The food is delicious, the service excellent, the ambience subtle & quiet. The price....a little on the expensive side so save this up for a special evening.
And yes do book, we had a 7.30 booking & got there about 8 (thanks to looking for Agora!) When we walked in the restaurant looked rather deserted (especially compare to Chat Masala next door which was bursting at the seams!) but by the time we left it had filled up!
We had to starters - a kind of Greek springroll stuffed with feta & spinach (which hubby the feta fan gave a thumbs up to) & the Dolma - stuffed vineleaves - which I enjoyed but husband said were ordinary!
Had a main each - his was a marinated lamb on a creamy/cheesy yogurt & eggplant sauce. Very good, lamb tender & spice just right.
I had a minced chicken grill on a yougurt & smoked eggplant sauce -it was excellent, the smiky flavour balanced perfectly with the mild tartiess of the yogurt & the chicken mince was melt-in-you-mouth.
Unfortunately they didnt have Baklava, though it was on the menu, which was a huge let down as we are both fans. I ordered some mint teas which was also a let down as it was just mint teabags rather than fresh mint! |

| Mediterranean Gem in the east
I've been to this restaurant four times now & each time I always wonder why it's not more patronized than it is. Case in point, apparently no one on this site has been there. Which is really such a pity because they get almost everything right. First of all, the restaurant is pleasant enough in decor - modern with a few light mediterannean touches such as hand-painted tiles. The service staff are polite, respectful, unintrusive & efficient. They never get the orders wrong, and they provide service with a smile. But the best thing is definitely the food. To date, I have not had a bad meal there. There are the usual suspects - humus, baba ganoush, briks, etc which are all good, but the stars are the main courses. The lamb koftas are divine - succulent & bursting with flavor. The chef also does just as well with his seafood. We tried both the prawns & fish & were extremely happy with the fact that both had been done to perfection. If you go, do leave some space for dessert though. The baklava is sinfully sweet! There is also the house dessert which comes highly recommended. So if you live in the east & want to try something new, give this place a go. Would be sad if it disappeared just because no one knew it existed. |
