You could eat everything on the menu at one sitting
Feb 14, 2007Think I could eat everything on the menu here in one sitting. One of the things that this place got right was less sugar. Everything has only a tinge of sweet here, and that's to make sure you can taste the flavour of the ingredients. The result - a well-balanced taste in every menu item that will leave you wanting for more.
Something experiencial that I particularly enjoy here is to make my order in Mandarin. Somehow, it just tastes better that way.
(Or maybe they did something special for me when I used Mandarin)
Anyone tried ordering in Cantonese? Maybe the effect would be even better?
Another thing that I particularly like about the shop is their decor. Pretty, authentic-looking hardwood furniture to seat the customers. But I would not recommend this place to hold your party or gathering here. It is a good place to stopover for what they sell, but sitting there for a long stretch means you are preventing others from enjoying really good desserts.
Anyway, I can't believe you are still reading this.
You should be on your way down to try something there!Must Tries

overrated?
Apr 17, 2007It has all the hype, but didn't live up to my expectations.
It was featured on the previous episode of "Sweets For My Sweet' on Channel 5, recommended by Mr. Alan Tern. Wow, it sure looks yummy yummy!
The reviews in many magazines, newspapers & forums are giving it thumbs- up. Even the reviews here are commendable. Hmmmm, delicious!
I went there on a Saturday evening, at around 11pm. It was crowded, & i had to wait for about 10 mins in the queue. It has to be better than excellent, right?
So, I ordered the highly praised mango sago & steam milk egg. Takeaway, that is. I couldn't find a table for 2. We went to a corner, savoring our highly anticipated desserts.
Mango sago? It was so thick & sweet, & I kept biting on the ice pebbles.
Steam Milk Egg? It is not as smooth & silky as I expected it to be. It's just 'normal'. I've tasted better ones.
Maybe I should have tried other items, but I was so disappointed after sampling the mango sago & steam milk egg.
Maybe it's just me?
Maybe because i ordered it takeaway?I also recommend this place for

why is this place so crowded?
Apr 19, 2009i ordered 3 things when i was here on a recent friday.
1) mango sago with pomelo - decent, but pales in comparison to the ones you get in HK or even some good canto restaurants here.
2) pulut hitam with vanilla ice cream - tasteless. don't bother.
3) aloe vera with lime and honey - now, this was strange. it was the most BITTER thing i have ever eaten. it was so bitter i almost teared. i thought the food went bad and wanted to return it, but my friends insisted that it could be just the honey or the rotten lime.
perhaps i didn't order their more popular items such as steamed milk pudding, peanut/sesame paste, etc but what i had was really nothing to shout about.I also recommend this place for

Nice desserts, Busy Crowd!
Mar 5, 2010Definitely not the place to choose if you wish to have a quiet tete-a-tete with friends or loved ones. This place is usually packed to the gills and its certainly come a looong way since it started as an empty solo dessert joint years back. Now you have to fight with locals and Chinese nationals for a tiny seat on evenings most of the week.
But thankfully, the standard has maintained and their mango pomelo is still yummy-licious. The service is fast and efficient so you don't have to wait more than 5 mins before the next table is swiftly cleared. The noise level is a little unsettling but once you start on the desserts, suddenly the ambience is bearable. The dessert is usually served within 3-5 mins as its all usually ready made and customers don't usually linger on due to the cramped pseudo chinese decor surroundings.
This place is a can't miss around the Bugis district and don't even bother trying out the other wannabe dessert joints around that area.I also recommend this place for

Eat at own risk!
Jan 13, 2010I tried the almond cream and the steamed egg white with Ginger juice. They were both disastrous! The almond dessert tasted more like diluted water with sugar and almond essence. The steamed egg white at $3.50 was not even worth the the effort to carry to the table. The texture was great but tasted like there were dead ants in the mix, even though I didnt see any of course. I forced myself to take a few spoonfuls to try and figure out why it tasted that way. The egg? The Ginger juice? In the end no clue. Left more than half a bowl untouched. What a pity. The shop looked really promising with a wide menu of traditional sweets, but the food need serious overhaul.I also recommend this place for

Ah Chew Desserts - Sweet Paste Oh My!
Nov 30, 2009Ah Chew Desserts
Sweetness from the marriage of creativity and tradition.
Ah Chew Desserts have been one of my favourite Traditional Chinese desserts hangouts (Theres Ji De Chi 记得吃 too!).
Hidden in the steamboat restaurants filled Liang Seah Street, Ah Chew is always filled with a huge desserts-loving crowd.
You might need to come at a real auspicious time to get a seat immediately. (Or rather, come early. HAHA!)
***
RED BEAN PASTE WITH LILY BULBS (HOT)
百合紅豆沙(熱)
SGD 2.00
Velvety red bean paste served smoking hot.
Rich and full flavoured.
***
MANGO POMELO SAGO (COLD)
楊枝甘露(冷)
SGD 3.80
Only available in big portion.
The mango sago is fantastically refreshing and rich.
Not diluted at all and the pomelo adds a slight sourish and bittersweetness to the dessert!
PS: You can add Ice Cream to it as well!
***
YAM SAGO (COLD)
香芋西米露 (冷)
SGD 2.20
A wave of fragrance from the chilled coconut milk, followed by velvety yam paste.
Thumbs up!
However, as the coconut milk itself is pretty heavy, the amount of yam they added to it makes the dessert a little too much for me. You might get tired of it after a few mouths but taste wise, it is still fantastic!

Nowadays, I guess Ah Chew Desserts are moving its business into the tourism area as I noticed many groups of tourists enjoying their desserts at Ah Chew when I visited! (Time to expand!!! No seats no seats!!!)

Pleasant Desserts with no frills
Nov 1, 2009Came here after having a good meal at Ma Maison.
I ordered the Honeydew Sago (large) with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream for $3.80.
The milk+honeydew+sago was moderately pleasant. It wasn't fantastic, but it sure was good enough to make my evening a more relaxing one. However, I realised that I really needed the scoop of ice-cream; the dessert isn't as.. sweet as I'd expect it to be - and the ice-cream really nails the sweetness just right.
The place was really crowded. Small tables.Must Tries

A Sweet End
Apr 17, 2009After a really heavy meal which consisted of 4 mains & 2 desserts between the 2 of us, my makan buddy decided that he needed a 2nd dessert fix & asked if I was up to it. Not wanting to miss out on a place he had been raving about, I decided to go for it despite my tummy threatening to burst from all the earlier abuse....and boy, am I glad I decided to go.
I'm usually a sceptic when it comes to the standards of Chinese dessert in Singapore & one can usually find me lamenting on the sorry state of affairs so I didn't have very high expectations of Ah Chew.
Although it was quite late, the place was packed to the rafters & we were lucky enough to grab a table that a bunch of kids were just vacating as we arrived. I decided on the Peanut Cream which is relatively hard to find in most places & my friend had his usual Mango Sago with Pomelo.
As I'd been checking the surrounding shops out, it was the wonderful aroma of roasted peanuts wafting into my nostrils that brought to attention the fact that my dessert had arrived at our table. It smelled so good I totally forgot about the fact that I was really full & decided to tuck in without waiting for my friend's dessert to be served. Man.....was it good!!!!
The peanut cream was as close as I could get to those I'd tasted in my childhood & dare I say, maybe even better than the stall I used to go to! It was so good I finished it in record time & if not for the fact that I was seriously stuffed by then, I would have gone for seconds!
I also 'stole' a spoonful of dessert from my friend & although I thought it was pretty good & exceptionally generous with the mangoes, my heart had already been captured by the Peanut Cream & I'm very sure I will be back for more.Must Tries

average desserts
Apr 5, 2009came here for desserts with my parents. My dad had the mango pomelo & my mum had the ginger steamed egg. I chose the steamed egg white but it was out of stock. it didn't take too long for our dessert to come. the ginger on my mum's steamed egg was so hot it lingered on my tongue & lips even after I had swallowed the egg. my dad's mango pomelo was not cold enough but not too sweet, just sweet enough to satisfy my very sweet tooth. I would come back here to try some of their other stuff.I also recommend this place for

Gingko nuts with barley and beancurd.
Mar 2, 2009You know for some reason I always believed that there was more than one dessert cafe on Liang Seah. But for some other reason, I can only find this one.
I'm not good at reviewing traditional dessert cafes, because I am decidedly boring. My idea of traditional dessert is almond cream. And maybe walnut cream. And more almond cream. Funky stuff like steamed milk egg custard? I've never tried that. Which you can say is a pity, because this place has a whole menu chockful of different desserts for you to choose from.
So I came here and I ordered the warm gingko nut with barley and beancurd dessert. S$2.50 gets you a large bowl (but it's not that large. I would say it is a decent size).
It's not bad. I mean, I haven't tasted the best gingko nut with barley and beancurd in Singapore, because it's so generic. You cannot go too wrong with this, and therefore you can never make it all that right either.
But it's not bad. They do it a bit more Cantonese, with the beancurd more dissolved into the soup and a bit thicker. I prefer it less Cantonese though.
I guess this place is one of those that you'll come to when you've got a sweet tooth and you want something comforting, but without bursting a hole in your wallet. Nothing you'd go out of your way for, but a place you'll be glad to have in mind when you want a choice.Must Tries

Dessert craving
Mar 1, 2009Dessert or desert of seats. I can hardly find seats in the evening. Mango sago is sweet goodly for those who have a sweet craving or mango lovers. The grass jelly is of substance- you can taste the a pinch of bitterness from the herb. Furthermore with honey, a perfect harmony. Water chestnut desserts is good too- light and refreshing.
