Ah Orh is supposed to be pretty good for zi char but TBH their Tiong Bahru branch isn't that great. In fact, they tried to overcharge us for their weak chinese tea - a pot for three at $8.50. Are you kidding? I'm sorry, but I won't take this type of nonsense from an open-air coffee shop. I queried about the price, but the boss clearly doesn't know how to do business - he insisted that it's a standard price - but I insisted until they cut it to $6. This just goes to show you how customer-oriented they are.

The food wasn't that great. We ordered onion omelette, prawn roll (hay zou), 'eight treasures vegetables', sambal kang kong, prawn paste chicken with rice. All on their recommendations because they do not have a standard menu and they do not list their prices up front either. The omelette was like something I could have cooked at home and the 'eight treasures vegetables' dish was so watery and tasteless - so not much value-add from a zi char place. Sambal kang kong, too spicy and I couldn't taste any dried shrimp (hay bee) in it. The prawn paste chicken was a SUPREME...disappointment because they fried whole chicken pieces in the batter instead of filleted bits - and so half of the bites were bone. Only thing worth eating was prawn roll, but which good hokkien restaurant can't do this dish decently anyway?

Seriously don't consider this place. Only go if you are living nearby and don't plan to cook for dinner. Otherwise, it isn't even worth a bus ride to.

    1. iLikeFood As a long time regular at ah orh - would like to just highlight that this is the sort of place that caters to towkays who don't really care how much they pay for a pot of tea or a steam pomfret or cold crab. The secret to this joint is the freshness of the produce which is hand picked each morning from the local markets. It is not the sort of place you would go to for normal "cze char" fair. Hence the lack of a menu.

Ah Orh is one of those joints that offer a limited repertoire of dishes and they are good!

    We had :

    1.  fish maw soup

    2.  braised duck

    3.  oyster omelette

    4.  stir fried crayfish in tomato sauce with fried man tou

    5.  steamed pomfret

    6.  stir fried chives with prawns

    7.  sea cucumber & fish maw stew

    8.  or nee

From the time that you place your order, the dishes are served in quick succession.  Quality is consistently good.

Ah Orh is a no-frills Teochew eatery.  Thumbs up!!

I've been to Ah Orh many times. While not every dish is perfect at Ah Orh, the few 'must haves' include steamed crayfish with garlic, the dense and robust fish maw soup, the melt-in-the-mouth eight treasures vegetables and oyster omelette (of course!).

I used to go fa qi ren for bak kut teh cos only this place operate till late nite.. and i love the soup..nice

Now even ah hwa outrum bak kut teh also open till late. But i find it so so not fantastic but the boss is very friendly

Came across Ah Orh bak kut teh on newspaper advertisement so decided to give it a try..

It took me quite sometime before i found this place. It is located under a HDB blk and rather wu lu cos i stay in the east so find it challenging to reach.

I realise it is actually a teochew restaurant but sell bak kut teh at nite. I ordered

    1. bak kut teh

    2. salted vegetable

    3. braised duck n pork stripe

    4. pork leg ( asked for lean meat)

    5. kidney n zhu yao

    6. jelly like (dunno what is it call)

I must say i dun take bak kut i only like to drink the soup so i find fa qi ren soup is better. But the pork leg and duck is really nice.. nicely braised and the meat is tender and not too hard. Salted vegetable is the best that i have come across.

I had it consecutively 2 nites.. i even bring friends there to try..

try their mien xian and not take rice cos it will be too full.

I had water chestnut and my friends had aloe vera..

We spent about $38 for 4 person.. reasonable

Is worth giving it a try..

Must tries: braised duck, pork leg and salted vegetable

Ah Orh just started selling Bah Kut Teh for supper and we went to try as we ran out of ideas where to eat supper. We ordered Bah Kut Teh, Braised Pork Leg, Salted Vegetable, Braised Duck. They had mee sua to go along with the Bah Kut Teh as well. Verdict is :

Bah Kut Teh - Hmmm so so

Braised Pork Leg - Not bad

    Salted Vegetable - Reasonable

    Braised Duck - Good

The price is pretty reasonable as well, it cost the 4 of us less than $30 including 2 drinks. I am craving for the braised duck now and I strongly recommend for u to have a try!

Took Dad to Ah Orh for Father's Day dinner after having been introduced to it by a Teochew friend.

Must say the steamed pomfret was the best - very fresh and tender fish, a hint of sour from the plums and not too salty - done just right. My other fav was the or-nee - enough lumpiness to show that its mashed from fresh yams and not from powder and it was not too sweet and oily.

Other dish that I like was the veggies w garlic - lightly stir-fried and not too much gravy. One dish I didn't like was the goose web with sea cucumber - the web and sea cucumber did not absorb the gravy and were a little tasteless.

Overall,I think Dad enjoyed the dinner.

Overall good Teochew food and cooking, in a slightly better than coffee shop environment. All the usual Teochew seafood dishes such as steamed fish and crab with roe, fried prawn rolls, plus fish maw soup and braised goose. Must also try the orh nee (yam dessert) which is served with sweetened ginkoe nuts and red dates on top.

They do not appear to have a menu, so when you get there, you have to stop by the front entrance where the uncooked ingredients are displayed (some in a refrigerated compartment) and then make your order to the chef, similar to when you are at a tzer char stall in a coffee shop.

Convenient parking just next to the restaurant, but come early for lunch or dinner otherwise the restaurant and the carpark will most likely be packed, especially on weekends.

Must tries: steamed pomfret, fish maw soup, steamed crab with roe, orh nee dessert

    1. Weighty Man Did not have a good eating experience there but food was acceptable, though a bit pricey.

    2. cc chia Yes, pricey for a slightly better than coffeeshop environment. Service was passable since we were early and not many people around.

However food was acceptable as you say, and since the place appears to be well patronized, perhaps people here on the whole, seem to like the food.

Friend treated us to dinner in July 07. Had heard so much about the seafood servied by Ah Orh that it is legenday. Was quite disappointed at the result.

Reservation: Needed as it is very busy, even on weekends, and even during lunch. Parking is OK - bring your coupons.

Food / Beverage: Orderd steam fish, fish maw soup and 3 veg. All were tasty, the fish maw soup was unique but I found the gravy a bit thin albeit tasty. Fish maw was cut into pieces. Top fish maw soup is still at Beng Thin.

Ambience: 1/2 grade above a non-aircon coffee shop. This is and coffee shp retrofitted with airconditioning. Loud, people shouting and moving around. Not relaxing.

Value: $$60 for a large fish for 6 pax, 1/2 of total cost. Fiah maw was $30. Though it was pricy for that class of restaurant.

Service: In your face, service missing. Some coffee shops provide better service.

Must tries: Fish maw soup is a must.

Try their fish maw soup and their steamed crab with roe. Quite a good joint to eat at. Environment is corner coffee shop with aircon. Go early or late otherwise will be too crowded.

Very fresh and quality cooking. This is an old style family restaurant and is essentially an upgraded, air-conditioned 'zhi char' place.

Steam fish, teochew style, is a must have. Braised duck is also excellent; meat is firm and tasty in a robust and well balanced sauce. Only disappointment was the crayfish that was not as fresh but this was masked by the tasty and spicy sambal sauce. Best Or nee dessert I have tasted, despite no lard being used.

There's limited car parking at the HDB carpark behind the block. Restaurant was almost full when I went on a public holiday evening and reservation is a must.
