son is back for 2 weeks winter break, & i am having more coffee breaks than i had for the whole year. :-) this time we had sunday brunch – roti prata at S.M.Aisha & teochew cold crab at di wei teochew restaurant at food canopy at botanical gardens. :-). afterwards, we walked over to assembly coffee for a cuppa on 28.12.2014. assembly coffee is a nice cool place to chill. we had 2 flat whites, a cappuccino & a cafe mocha, plus a lemon meringue. the young lady barista created a beautiful, delightful swan latte art on the cafe mocca. it looked so easy… the coffee & milk micro-foam were smooth & nice flavour. daughter ordered a lemon meringue. it was very nice. lemon was tangy not too sweet & combined well with the biscuit crust & cream. i think i can make this one. so definitely try it at home. ^^ i will put this on par with chye seng huat at tyrewhitt road dutch colony at pasarbella @ grandstand turf club road, with the advantage that it served a really good lemon meringue. i will also try the waffle & the salted caramel nut cake? next time.

Looking for a place to chill out on my day off, I decided to check out Assembly Coffee, one of the many hipster joints that has emerged.

A small little set up at Evans Lodge, the place focuses on its coffees with some light bites.

I tried the Smoked Salmon and Egg ($15), which had generous portions of half runny egg and smoked salmon on a slightly toasted large cut of white bread.

I also had the reheated Chicken Pie ($9.50), which came with a large side of rocket.

Other than the coffees, I found an interesting drink - Chamomile and Grapefruit Soda ($6.50). This was really good, light balance of sweetness with fizziness. A must try when you visit here.

Service was also good. Run by young upstarts, it was efficient, friendly and eager. Overall, a nice place to hang out.

Earl Grey Waffle!

We had a Salted Caramel Waffle and an Earl Grey Waffle. The waffle itself was quite yummy, crispy on the edges and warm and soft on the inside, and the salted caramel sauce was quite delightful, not too sweet. But it was the Earl Grey that really surprised me. In fact, it was really good! If you like tea, this is the choice for you. The Earl Grey is strong, and very refreshing, not to mention, an unusual flavour for a waffle. I daresay I think it surpassed the salted caramel, in my opinion.   Inside the café, it's very very small, but quite beautifully furnished. It felt warm and woody, and I love the quirky "A" decorations all over the inside. We went at lunchtime around 1pm, and it was filled to the brim. The staff were extremely helpful and shifted some tables around to find us a seat relatively quickly. The crowd slowly cleared and it actually become quite pleasant at around 2pm or so. Food was fresh and came quickly. Overall I had a really nice experience.

The only problem with this place is that it's tucked away on a tiny stretch of Evans Lodge, and probably quite difficult to visit if you do not drive.

Also, make sure you take a photo with/of the "A" sign outside and the blue bicycle, haha.   Note: Wish I'd tried the Assembly Brick Toast! Will be back, that looked pretty incredible.
