| yes u'r rite, a truly hidden gem
first time eating at lucky plaza. we were going up to ayam penyet when my friend said she couldn't stand her hunger any more second ( i think becos the smell when we passed through this ojolali was just appetizing) the place was quite packed but somehow we were squeezed in by the waiter to share a table with others. dun really wish for comfy seats and private table. outside people started to q. (thankfully we arrived just a minute earlier)
we ordered ayam bakar (6.50), ikan bawal bakar (7.20), and pink coconut drink (3.50).
the ikan bakar was damn GOOD. the spice was just spicy enough to make it taste like heaven. since we were from hungry hell. my friend said her ayam bakar was delectable. both were served with rice (which i think the portion was far too small), cucumbers, tempe (how to say in english?). not to forget the chili!!!! the heavenly combination of the spiciness of the fish with the chili made me ordered the second round xp
coconut drink-- not so many coconut inside, but it shooed away your thirst in a milisecond. |

| A truly hidden gem!
My indonesian colleague brought us there last Friday. I would never have ventured into Lucky Plaza otherwise. Always thought the area was rather shady. But you know a restaurant is good when you see locals patronising it. And it was half filled with Indonesians.
Anyway, it wasn't so easy to find. We were there at 7.30 and there was a queue of about 10 in front of us. I took the ikan panggang and OMG it was amazing. It was my first time having an entire fish to myself. What bliss. It came with rice and chilli and tempeh. At $5+ only I think.
The pink coconut drink is cute. There's a bandung-ish drink but I can't remember the name. It's carbonated. That's good too. I didn't have the grilled chicken but they all said it was fantastic. Gado gado was also good.
Please try to avoid peak hours. There is an unspoken rule of not hanging around once you are done. The place can seat only about 30 people. |

| Not my cup of tea
Went to try this place last evening after reading comments on this website, and sad to say, i had mixed feelings bout the food here.
What i tried:
Grilled chicken set, Grilled pomfret set, Grilled prawn set, soto ayam, gado gado, fish cakes, pink coconut juice, avocado juice.
Taste of grilled items were not bad, but the texture of the chicken was not juicy enough, fish was not bad, no fishy smell but texture a tad dry. Prawns were flavourful but my friends found it to be too salty... the blahchan (how to spell?) that comes with the dishes were quite fiery but it lacked the oomph compared to the one i had in IVINS, but u can't please everyone huh....
Soto ayam was a disappointment. the soup was lukewarm and oily, and the ingredients inside were all marinated to a weird yellow... probably from the spices, but the soup was salty and dull... skip this dish if you can.
Fishcakes were not springy type but chewy and rubbery. not much flavor though...i feel like im chewing on dough... dunno if its meant to be like that, but we did not enjoy it at all...
The Gado gado is a must-try. the sauce was thick and creamy, not overly sweet and just with the right punch... the veggies found inside were tender and not smashed softly types where u find in other places. its my favorite dish so far.
Pink coconut was nothing to rave about, coconut juice tinged with a baby pink dunno wad and tasted abit wierd.
Avocado juice was a little of the watery side, but still slurppable and sweetness just nice... more like a dessert than a drink so maybe you can order it at the end of the meal.
Total bill came up to be $45.50 for 3 adults... not really worth the price in my opinion. but can always go there for the avocado juice and gado gado if you are feeling peckish.
Service wise was brisk and cordial. nothing special. no sunny smiles from the staff also... they work with no smiles on their faces, like robots. |

| Unforgettable Grilled Chicken
Boldly claimed to be the Most Authentic Indonesian Grilled Chicken you can find in Singapore, Ayam Bakar in the Malay language simply means “Grilled Chicken”, while Ojolali when translated from Javanese to English means “Do Not Forget”.
In short, once u tried their chicken, it will leave you with an unforgettable experience – and dare I audaciously say a reverberating YES! In fact it was so good that I was kinda reluctant and hesitant to share this place with you guys, as the place is already so crowded with customers every time I frequent there. For starter, we tried the Pempek, or the Traditional Palembang Fried Fish Cake.
Unlike the normal fish cake that we, Chinese, are familiar with – salty and full of bite, their version was slightly bland and funnily chewy. This was the only dish so far that I have tried in the restaurant that failed to win me over. Of course, when the main arrived it was a totally different story. Original Chef Specialty, the Ayam Bakar was succulent and deeply enriched by the special spices.
Accompanied by the Sambal Ulek (Oelek) and Sambal Kecap, or Dark Sauce with Chili Padi and Onions, the combination is simply godsend. Paired it up with my favourite sugar-high Happy Soda, a Rose Syruped Drink Downed with Excess Condense Milk. It is so sweet that you are literally happy, or high with sugar rush.
Other recommendations to go for are their Ikan Bawal Bakar or Grilled Pomfret, their Rawon, or the Indonesian Beef Stew, and their Sup Buntut, or the Oxtail Soup. Sedup!!!

| cheap and good
An Indonesian friend recommended this place to me, and it did not disappoint!
The joint is the sort of hole-in-the-wall outfit you'd expect to find in the back row of shops on the 3rd floor of Lucky Plaza. BTW, stepping into Lucky Plaza always makes me feel like a tourist in some other SEA country, a world away from the swanky malls of Orchard Road. This feeling continues right through to this restaurant (if you can call it that). It's small and cramped (though they seem to have opened an extension a few doors away to cope with the crowd), you sit on stools and share tables if you have to, while all around you, people jabber on in Bahasa, Tagalog, Chinese and English in equal measure. The service is friendly and we were given menus to browse while waiting. Thankfully, as it was a weekday night at about 8pm, we only waited 5 min before we got our little table space.
Since this place is called Ayam Bakar Ojolali, we ordered ayam bakar (duh). We also ordered an ikan bakar and a sour soup with veggies in it (I'm sorry I can't remember if there was a specific name to it! It's NOT sop buntut.) All were very good. The chicken and fish were both nicely done -- not dried out, as is wont to happen in some other places -- and the tongue-on-fire hot sambal provided a great kick. But what was really shiok was the sweet kicap-manis-based sauce they slathered all over the chicken and fish -- it was really, really good. The soup was also very tasty with just the right touch of sourness.
For drinks, we had the pink coconut drink because the avocado was all sold out :( The pink coconut is essentially just strips of young coconut swimming in rose syrup. Refreshing, and visually very pleasing, but I was really craving the avocado drink and found the pink coconut rather normal and unexciting.
The best part of course is that it's inexpensive -- I think about $6 per main dish and $4 for the soup (I can't remember exactly!)
A great place for a satisfying quick bite before you step back out into Orchard Road, Singapore. |
