  1. Nice Desserts! But avoid the main courses

It's pretty authentic looking and tasting Japanese desserts. I just found the red bean a little too sweet, which is rather 'unauthentic' of Japanese desserts.

The green tea ice-cream is in a good balance, the green tea flavour is rich while the milk only has a light hint. It is very smooth with no powdery after taste like the usual green tea ice-creams.

There is a lack of variety in the ice-cream flavours if you were dining in.
For take aways, try the green tea red bean, lychee and milk tea.

I didn't like the Teriyaki Chicken Bento. The chicken was dry and despite its name, the chicken was steamed. Taste-wise is alright, but the dry chicken was disappointing. The portion was small as well.

My friend made a reservation at 730pm. I arrived at 730pm thinking that my friends were already inside. I walk in looking for them and when I realised they were not, I went to check with the waiter (an Indian) on our reservation. My specific question was "Is there a booking make under xxx?" He seems to misinterpret my question as looking for another restaurant as he pointed outside to the right and say "You just turn right and walk straight." I repeat my question again and finally he brought me to our table.

As we got one child with us, I requested for a Baby Chair. The Indian Waiter asked me whether I want the chair now and I say yes please. He brought the chair and tried to place it beside the chair outside before telling me he feel that the chair is blocking the way so could he bring the chair back later? As we were on the seat with blind beside us, I reminded him that he can squeeze the chair in that corner right at the end of our table as nobody would walk past. He reluctantly placed the seat there and walk off.

After my friends arrived, we decided to eat the buffet. We make a few orders but there were always a few items that never arrived. There were one specific chinese guy in the green polo T who took our order without writing down. We specifially ask him again if he can remember our order (which consist of 5 items) and he was very confident that he can. We request for him to repeat our order and he was unable to do it. We repeat our order to him again but he still insist on not writing down and walk off. Eventually, only 3 out of the 5 items show up. Although the food was supposed to be cook upon order but there was a few like the scallop and tempura which appears to be cold.

Being very annoyed with all the missing orders, we asked another chinese waiter who is wearing a specs to check our order for us. He came back and state that the order item that is not served is the Beef croquette. As it was served earlier, we pointed it out to him and he went back to the kitchen and check again. He came back again stating that the item on the table is not Beef croquette as it is still not ready yet. We ask him if that is not croquette then what is it, he answered that it was a Hamburger Steak as we have combined the items together. We request for him to take a closer look as there was an obvious different between the two. So we asked him again what it was and he was not able to answer. He seek help from the Indian Waiter who repeated the same thing to us again. Eventually when he was not able to answer the question too, he seek the Green Polo T Shirt Waiter's help. He inform us that they have make a mistake with the picture on the menu and what we are eating was not the beef croquette. None of the 3 waiter on duty could tell us what is the mystrey beef item on our table but kept insisting that it is not beef croquette. Eventually they decided to cancelled the order.

After that we make our order for dessert and at 930pm, the Indian waiter came ask us for our last order. After making our last order, he requested for the menu to be returned. As I was sitting beside the child and the Menu was beside me and the chair was blocking him. He actually tried to lend over the boy who was still eating to reach for the menu. I stopped him and hand over the menu to him. He did not say thanks and snatch them out of my hand and walk off.

We were waiting our last order when a Female Waitress approached us and apologize and say they have to cancelled our last order as it was make at 930pm. As we started our buffet at 750pm, they should take the last order at 920pm and not 930pm. As it is according to COMPANY POLICY, she got no choice but to cancel our last orders. We ask her whether is it our fault that we were not ask for our last order at 920pm and she say no. We asked again on the reason on why we should be penalised for a mistake made by your staff. She was very frustrated with our questioning and hastily say she will ask the kitchen to prepare our order as the outlet close at 10pm, we must make sure we finish our order or else we would have to pay for the left over and she walk off.

We got our order at close to 950pm and was reminded repeatly by the waiters who brought the food that they close at 10pm and we must finish our food by then. As we were the last table left, the waiters was just standing around and kept staring at our table as like chasing us to finish faster. The Indian Waiter in particular was staring at our table with a hostile look on his face. My friend was infuriated and asked him over to check what is it he wanted. He claim he was not staring at us so we request for a Manager. He insist there is no Manager on duty and the most senior person on duty was the lady who spoke to us earlier. We decided to let the matter off and he walk off to the front of the outlet still staring at us.

We were really very disappointed by the services rendered by their staffs. They were not only unapologetic about their mistake but most importantly Rude. Walking off seems to be common culture at the restaurant and it appears that closing the outlet at 10pm far exceed the need to provide a good Customer Service.

We were there to celebrate a friend's birthday and instead of a happy time, we were presented with a bad time.

      • what a let- down!

        Apr 28, 2007
i was shopping there earlier, when i was attracted to their signboard on their strawberry ice- kacang with ice cream (they call it strawberry with ichigo). generous amount of fresh strawberries, shaved ice, ice cream....hmmmm....picture perfect.

since it was dinner time, my friend & i decided to order our meals. i ordered tokyo cha-siew raman, & my friend ordered a shizuoka raman.

my friend wasn't impressed with the food, & i won't sample it because it's spicy.
my cha-siew raman (soup base) was so salty, & the meat was so thick.

the strawberry ice kacang with vanilla ice cream ...the strawberries wasn't fresh (i think they soak the fresh strawberries into some sweet substance to preserve it for the day)...
the saving grace is the vanilla ice cream, which is smooth & fragrant, from hokkaido. if not for the vanilla ice cream, i won't even rate the 'food/ beverage' as 4!

to sum it all, go over to macdonald's for the set meal. i think you'll be happier. anyway, i can order the strawberry sundae. no difference- the strawberries are 'preserved' the same, except that macdonald's sundae doesn't have shaved ice, but it's 4 times cheaper. duh!

          • Horrible service & ambience

            Oct 18, 2009
My mum and I stumbled upon this Japanese restaurant while we were shopping at Marina Square yesterday. We were attracted by their A (noodles) + B (rice) set lunch offer and as we were both small eaters, we decided to have a try.

My mum ordered the Spicy Tan Tan Ramen and I had the usual Terriyaki Chicken Don. The Spicy Tan Tan Ramen was not very spicy but very oily which I think was mainly the chilli oil and there was very little minced meat, mostly just the spring onions. The Terriyaki Chicken Don was alright, quite special that they added minced tamago on it but the chicken was not well marinated there was very little sauce given. The chawanmushi was very smooth but not fragrant enough. Overall, not too bad for budget food that cost only $7.80 but Ajisen's ramen would be nicer.

A note to add, the service here is terrible. The waiters do not know their stuff. When we first enquired with the first waiter about what ingredients the Tan Tan ramen contain, he said that he do not know and that he have to ask his colleague. When the second waiter came, he only said it contains meat. We asked whether it was chicken and he said yes and we ordered. We also asked this second waiter whether we could top-up 2 chawanmushi, and he also said yes. However, not 2 mins after that, a waitress who was of a more senior position came and informed us that the ramen actually contained pork and not chicken and we cannot order 2 chawanmushi because each promotion set is only valid for 1 top-up.

The ambience was also terrible, the patrons at the first 2 tables were talking so loudly that the restaurant was filled with their voices and we could not even hear any music from the speakers even though there were only 5 tables occupied at the restaurant.

          • Inflexible Management / Policy

            Jul 2, 2009
I wanted to order a scoop of ice-cream from the restaurant menu at the price of S$6.80, there were limited choice of flavors so I requested a particular Dark Chocolate flavor that is from the take-away fridge, but the staff said that those flavors are only for take-away and it's the company policy.

No take-away Ice-cream is allowed to bring in the restaurant which I understand as it costs only S$3.80 but i'm willing to pay S$6.80 for a single scoop to dine in the restaurant as shown on their menu but i wasn't given a choice to choose the flavors of ice-cream that I wanted. That's so Stu***!

Spoke to the Manager, it's utterly useless talking to him too!!!! The Manager just replied like a robot and said it's the company policy.

Azabu Sabo rather lose revenue than try to please their customers. .. I wonder did they open the restaurant just to make themselves happy and make things convenient for themselves???????

            • Good and reasonably cheap - for lunch

              Jun 1, 2009
We tried this on a whim while at Marina Square over the weekend. We were caught by the S$7.8 lunch ad on the outside for one rice dish with meat and one noodle dish.

We were prepared for really small portions of inferior quality, but were positively surprised. You have a choice of about 8 rice dishes and 6 noodles. I chose the Unagi rice and the pork noodles. Both, for this price, were very good. Can't really complain at this price.

Add a dollar and you get a full ice lemon tea. Add 2.50 more and you get one of their desserts which a lot of people seem to like.

So a rice and a noodle later, we emerged full, without too much damage. Not bad for a relaxed Sat lunch.

              • No Standard & Quality

                Feb 24, 2009
Met a friend for dinner at marina square on Saturday and both of us agreed on Japanese food. We walked past Azabu Sabo and decided to give it a try.

My friend ordered a Katsu bento set whereas I ordered a Teriyaki Chicken Set. The Katsu set was so-so only and the Teriyaki set is highly unpalatable. There is hardly any teriyaki sauce in the chicken and the meat was overcooked and dry.

The mains were such a disappointment that I didn’t even bother to order desserts.

Just give this place a miss!

                • Very bad experience

                  Jan 19, 2009
Had dinner at Azabu Sabo on a Saturday around 7pm. All four of us have not tried their food before so decided to give it a try.

To cut a long story short, here's the verdict:

                  Sashimi - NOT FRESH
                  - Salmon leaves a decidedly fishy taste in mouth

Premium USA beef sukiyaki - VERY BAD.
                  - beef served was not fully thawed
                  - slices are too big to cook in the tiny pot and eat in one mouthful
                  - beef tough and low quality

                  Spicy ramen - OILY
                  - all you taste is oil, oil and more oil

                  Service
                  - 4 service staff to a rather empty restaurant but they all like to stand right at the back so you must wait and try very hard to get their attention
                  - No apologies for half thaw beef and beef came back soggy (I dread to ask the unresponsive staff how they thaw it; they dont seem to care anyway)
I also recommend this place for

                  • Not worth it.

                    Sep 9, 2008
Made a bad choice to come here for dinner under the recommendation of a friend's friend. Bad friend :(

Was hankering after noodles, and saw that their udon selection is quite unique as they serve it flat, like kway chap. Decided on the very light soup udon, and my friend ordered teriyaki chicken set.

The udon soup was very bland (but hot though), and came with the pieces of kway chap with leeks, mushrooms, and 2 pieces of very strange things. Looks like soggy fried beancurd but was utterly tasteless and painstakingly chewy. Like boiled mua chee with no peanuts.

My friend couldnt finish his teriyaki chicken because it was served lukewarm and tasteless too. Looks not bad but didnt score in the taste department at all. Perhaps the chef ran out of soy sauce that day.

Had been eyeing their green tea ice cream whenever I walk past, so I had to try it since I was there. Ordered the dessert duo: green tea ice cream + moochi. The ice cream was not too bad, but moochi bland as well. Ugh.

The other thing we tried was this vanilla ice cream with red beans and baked puffs served in a bowl. Not too bad actually because there was a nice contrast of hot and cold, and vanilla ice cream tasted homemade.

Maybe the desserts was not bad because the mains were terrible. Service was nothing to complain about, and price was average, although I did spot their green tea ice cream on a cone being priced as $8.80 on the menu.

Maybe worth buying ice cream to go when you have the cravings, but dont come here for dinner. You'd be better off at the food square :D

                  • Service & food lousy

                    Aug 16, 2008
Went for dinner here and had a untasteful experience with the service and food. First of all, we went to ask if there are tables and was told to queue up curtly. The waitress said "Full house, queue up!" Only ask if got table must be so rude mehz? Waited for seats even though it was 9pm already.

Then food is lousy cos there are limited choices, only 2 pages of main dishes. eg. 3 types of ramen. Bento food (beef) and ramen was served lukewarm. Quite pissed but didn't dare ask kitchen to replace it. Hence finished the food unwillingly. Wanted to feedback to the manager so asked her over, she was super rude too! I told her the food was lukewarm she said I should have feedback to the kitchen before eating and not after eating, since I have eaten all there's nothing she could do. I was really pissed. First of all, they anyhow cook, so the taste is mediocre. Now I give you feedback you blame me? I never raised my voice and I was polite and phrased my feedback properly. Did not even say it was a complaint. The food tasted very plastic and foodcourt standard.

Gosh, at least be empathetic. Only the boss provided the better service of all, who served but the staff should be trained to have basic good service. Read their service is not even basic, aka a server is a not a waitress. Service is a totally differnt matter, a different experience all togther.

I boycott this place, don't waste $ here. $14.80++ for a bowl of ramen that's below average.

                    • Long queues for tempting dessert only..

                      Jul 2, 2008
What makes Azabu Sabo stands out and most appealing is its display of a variety of choice of desserts. The cuisine they offer generally is a grade higher than Ajisen@IMM ,which has an almost similar conceptual ambience, but no where near Kuriya Dining@Great World. Azabu Sabo is only suitable for high tea or dining in for their desserts.
