The reviews above are correct - the steaks are terrific. We had three steaks, and they were done very well. Even the accompanying potatoes were well considered.

The ambiance is not great. Within the borders of the restaurant it is fine, but being across the street from the car dealers in the Turf Club just hurts the atmosphere. We were with family, so don't care.

The music was not to our taste - not really relaxing - but to each his/her own.

The service was attentive, and the server was nice. The food came quickly. I will add there were few people there, though it was Monday evening, so that's not too surprising.

There are many items on the menu that are now off - no more meat loaf for instance, and despite cake written on the blackboard, it is now just vanilla or chocolate ice cream for dessert.

But who cares? The value-for-money is phenomenal, and the steaks are just terrific.

A friend recommended that we try this place on new year eve as turf city was quieter and more cozy compared to the big shopping malls. She visited this place a couple of times and raved about its food, service, and the value for money.

And so, a group of 7 of us headed down on the last day of 2008. I must say everything started off quite well. The waiter was polite and patient as we waited for our friends and ordered our food bit by bit. the starters and snacks such as seafood platter and potato salad was good. 3 of us had steaks, 2 fish n chips, 1 surf and turf, and 1 chicken chop.. beer was quite affordable, at $7.5 for a pint of erdinger.

all was ok, except for the chicken chop. it came half cooked. We were quite shocked - u can eat beef medium rare, but u cant eat chicken medium rare! We had it changed to a fish n chips, as my friend couldnt face any more uncooked chicken. THe waiter was only slightly apologetic. Being a really nice guy, the friend who had the uncooked chicken didnt kick up any fuss and just continued with his meal. He felt sick later on and threw up upon leaving. Even though the rest of our food was ok, and the service (before the incident happened) was quite good, this incident of uncooked chicken made me very disappointed.

i will have to consider going back again.

Went there for dinner with a group of my friends and i must say maybe its a semi-break from its past raves?

For starters we order the MEAT COMBO PLATTER and the SEAFOOD platter; both were not bad but im more of a meat person. The former had chicken wings with CHEESE on it - which complemented the overall taste very much. Moreover, the CHEESE is similar to the long john's cheese so thumbs up to that. The SAUSAGE with BACON was also another winner while the meatballs were so-so (subjective bias here as i only like my IKEA meatballs and i dont let go very easily haha) The seafood platter had the usual onion rings; fried breaded prawns; mussels; crab sticks and scallops - there was nothing that special about it.

For the maincourse, we ordered the CHICKEN in RED WINE SAUCE, the SURF n TURF steak and breaded prawns and the "SIGNATURE" fish and chips. By "signature" dish, one would expect it to be of star quality naturally thus we really expected more but the fish was cold and soggy and quite tasteless (all 4 of us who ordered the dish felt the same way so its not only my sentiments) It was also overpowered by the herbs/spices that was sprinkled on top of it so that was the last of the fish and chips :/ On the other hand, the CHICKEN in red wine was tender and refreshing so thats my 'must try' dish.

The location didnt really bug us because we all drove and there is also FREE-PARKING :] But one thing that surprised me was this; we started ordering at 8pm then at 805pm i asked the waiter whether we could make it for the HAPPY HOUR (like could we order one round of drinks) and the happy hour closed at 8pm. So i thought since it was a mini birthday dinner for me, he would be nice enough to close one eye since its only 5minutes? But NO, he was really by the books :S Owell, maybe i expect too much out of people or maybe i presume that people would be a tiny bit more flexible ?

So after this, i'll prefer to dine at the SEAFOOD/DIMSUM restaurant right behind.

The lesson ive learnt from this is to
a. take food as what it is & not to have so high expectations

Moreover, each review is purely subjective to each person's taste so bang & charlie's went down so-so for me but that does not mean it wont float someone else's boat :]

So as far as i am concerned; the meat platter & chicken in red wine were by far much better than their 'signature' fish & chips :O

Went to Bang & Charlie's at the Turf City (Bukit Timah) with a couple of friends for a birthday celebration.

Bang & Charlie's is a wine bar cum cafe. Do not be deceived by its location, the place was bustling with customers. Fortunately for us, we had reservations. Upon reaching the cafe, we were promptly greeted by the staff. The decorations, the soft spot-light and the friendly service made us felt completely at home. Soft familiar tunes were played in the background which accentuated the romantic atmosphere.

I ordered the highly recommended Fish & Chips and when it arrived, I was surprised by the generous portion. It was definitely value for money!

We also tried the potato salad. It was bagus!! 2 thumbs up! The bacon bits was done to perfection. It was not too salty and blended well with the potato.

The owner, Vincent, was a very good host and charmed us with his witty jokes. He made sure we had wine in our glasses all the time and gave us a tour of the place.

Final Verdict: A must go for those who are looking for a place to hang-out with friends and not to mention it's friendly to the wallet too. Parking was not a problem and it is definitely a change from the usual hide-away-ish places like Dempsey Road or One Rochester.

A bunch of friends and i celebrated a friend's birthday here after stumbling upon this place online. On first impresssion, it's a cosy place with a comfortable crowd. Not too quiet or noisy.

Now to provide my 2 cents worth...

This is a restaurant that serves great food at very affordable prices. A generous portion (2 large cuts) of fish and chips @ just $9? That's quite hard to find nowadays. The fish that i got was much fresher compared to Fish & Co.

We also order the meat platter and potato salad. The meat platter was interesting - with servings like mini meat loafs. The potato salad seemed normal, but the taste exceeded our expectations. Refreshing, with bacon bits salted just right.

To top it off, we had a good wine recommendation by the manager. We got an Australian Chardonnay (50++) that was close to a dessert wine but not
as sweet. Excellent!

They also have a wide collection of new world wines in their cellar that we'll be looking forward to try the next time!
