    1. dining under the enchanted sea

      Mar 19, 2009
I have been hankering for a romantic meal that is by the waterfont and at a place that offers a serene retreat from the city. Hence, I was brought to Barnacles as a birthday surprise. The journey was agonizing and my curiosity was further piqued by his insistence that I be blindfolded during our ride there but the patience certainly paid off.

We reached the restaurant at about 6.30pm and it was still quite empty though there was a solemnization ceremony going on in the terrace. He had specially asked for a seat that offers a good view of the sea but because the sun was just setting and bright sunlight was still streaming in, the service staff was kind to ask if we would like a change of seats. I was glad we did not because what unfolded was an experience that would be etched in my memory.

I remembered I was filled with a sense of awe when I walked in the restaurant. The interior is decked with a wave like false ceiling with turquoise blue images projected around it. It certainly felt like I was dining under the enchantment of the sea.

The service staff who took our orders, her name was “salt” from her tag. She was warm and friendly, not to mention pretty and sweet so much so I can’t take my eyes off her. Funny thing is, most service staff used these pseudo names which kinda registered more easily with the customers I think. We also seek the assistance of another staff to help take our pictures and she was most obliging, even re-taking it several times when she noticed that the images were kinda fuzzy at first.

      Complimentary bread
Bread came in a basket with three different dips - butter, avocado cream and chilli crab sauce. I liked that there was a variety of bread to cater to different taste and the dips were quite unusual, a refreshing change from the butter and jam. The bread was warm by the way and a lovely way to kick start our meal.

      St Black Cod
Minimal seasoning is the restaurant hallmark and this dish was no exception. The two slabs of fish were served atop a bed of veggies and drenched in simple soya sauce. The layers of fish just slid right off as you sliced it, a testament to its crisp freshness.

      Salad De Crab
Having a small appetite, I ordered a salad with the intention of leaving some room for dessert. I had wanted the prawn salad with pineapple but chose this instead as I thought it was served with avocado bits. I was disappointed however that there was only a dollop of avocado cream. Not that it tasted bad but I would have preferred some fruits in my salad.

Most of the dishes (especially the fresh seafood) were presented rather dramatically and we had an eye feast looking at what was served to the other tables.

I was about to order desserts when one of the service staff, think her name was “little potatoe”, came over and proclaimed that our coffee and tea was on the house. Needless to say, we were thrilled. And just as I least expected, the two service staff brought out a tiramisu cake (included in the bill by the way) with a candle on it. They started singing the birthday song but what was even more charming was that the next table of Caucasians also joined in the singing. I was blown away almost to tears, with a tinge of embarrassment to boot.

What was great about the meal was not so much the food, but the opportunity to sit in the comfort of cool indoors and be enamored with the whole process of sun set. It was mesmerizing to see how the fiery sun mellowing by the minute and languidly ebbing into the horizon. One moment, it was this bright orangey yolk and another, it cast a soft diffused light onto the sea as it retires and finally, it disappeared from sight leaving just a trail of twinkling lights.

There was a slight kink at the end of the meal though. We noted from their website that entry to sentosa would be reimbursed but when we showed them our taxi receipt, the cashier insisted that we had to get a separate receipt from the gantry which we were not aware of (note – they have since updated their website following our feedback). There was also a slight discrepancy in our bill but fortunately all these were straightened out the next day with no fuss.

Total bill was just over $100 after 15% discount on ocbc credit card. The meal did not cost us a bundle and it would be even much lesser if we did not order any alcoholic drinks. Food was great, service par excellence but the experience was indelible. It was the most romantic birthday meal I have ever had and I will be relishing the prized moment for a long time to come. Thank you to all staff of Barnacles for such a marvelous dinner!

This place could be so good. Lovely setting, nice layout. Problem is that it just isn't. Food is very standard fare, and generally poor. Portions are miniscule if you go for the western menu. Ive been 3 times and hoped 3 times. The service staff try hard, but the management can be very rude and obnoxious.

Concur, Felix. It's an okay restaurant, nothing more. I've only been twice but I'm wondering if I went to an entirely different restaurant to most of these reviewers by mistake...

    1. Just leave it to the management...they know what to do...

      Oct 21, 2008
This review is a bit outdated. Went there in Q4 2007.

However, would like to share with all the experience I had.

It was my bf bday and I decided to give him a surprise on the location for dinner. Called Barnacles on that day at 4pm to book at table for 7pm. Told the manager to arrange a cake (any cake from the Menu will do) as is for a bday celebration. Knowing that it is a bday celebration, the Manager gladly offer to help to give my bf a bday surprise. He said:" Leave it to us, we will settle everything, just bring him here."

Hearing that, I was quite excited as well. (Cos it will be a surprise to me as well)

I took my bf there at 6.30 and the staff inform us that the restuarant is not open yet. However, he suggested that we can take a seat at the lawn and have some drink first.

He brought us to a table on the lawn, facing the sea and with the beatiful sunset, the setting is just right. We order a bottle of Moet' and was enjoying the beautiful sunset and breeze. A 4 piece band come over, offer to sing us a song. (Expected that, cos I been there a few time and they are always there to provide customer with some light entertainment.) However, my bf, beening shy, was quite taken aback. They sing us a few beautiful songs and we had a pleasant chat with them as well. While chatting, they spotted the chef walking by and invite her to sing along. COOL..... the chef gladly accepted the invite and sing us a song too. (wonder if it was in the arrangement)

We proceed shortly to the dinning area and order a seafood platter to share. The 2 tier seafood platter was served nicely and taste quite good.

After having the food, we were quite full and we seat down continue to have our drinks. The manager then sneak behind my bf back with a nice chocolate cake with all the staff following behind him. (I can see from my angle.) They sing the birthday song... and my bf had a shock when he turned his back. The cake was complementary from the restuarant, and I must say, it was a generous serving. We can hardly finish it.

The manager then came by and chat with us and even to offer us some wine on the house. However, we rejected the offer as we had been drinking since the afternoon.. (hee...hee...) and was headly down to a club after that for some more alcohol...

The best part is, my bf gave me the excuse that he want to go to the toilet. And knowing my bf's behavior of footing the bill before me, I quickly informed the manager not to accept payment from my bf. True enough, the instruction spread so fast that, after going to the gent, my bf went around and try to make "secret" payment. NONE of them willing to accept his payment. He had no choice but to let me buy him his bday dinner. :)

Cool and efficient arrangement I should say. Like what the manager say :"leave everything to us." I am sure we are in good hand...

      • Hi de hi...

        Apr 2, 2009
“* This place is probably better” declared the HGW website, as I reviewed 7atenine. I assume as some sort of April Fool’s Day joke.

There’s a surprising lack of decent beach-side restaurants for a country that’s mostly coastline. Barnacles does, as a beach-side restaurant, go some way to filling that niche. It’s just not very special, however.

We have been here twice and on neither occasion could we shake the "in-house dining in a mid-range resort" feel that you get from the minute you start walking through the Shangri-La grounds. The menu comes in a poly-pocket design that would be entirely in keeping with a coffee shop in Ang Moh Kio and takes the please-everyone all-foods-from-western-to-local approach.

We went last night for a friend’s birthday. Having booked a table for four at seven o'clock, we arrived to be told there was no such reservation. This despite the person who booked it pointing out that the restaurant had called him to confirm the reservation earlier that day. Consequently, our first impression was of being in the hands of hapless amateurs. They are nice hapless amateurs but no less hapless or amateurish for it. The waiting staff have a slightly distracted air. The sort you get when trying to work out whether or not you’d remembered to lock the car when you left it down that dark alley ten minutes ago. Additionally, despite them repeating our choices from the menu back to us verbatim (a good thing, I tend to think), we still had to chase for the fries that we ordered.

The soups - rockfish and French onion - are not that bad but don’t really stand out that much. The "Ying Yang" appetiser, apparently “voted one of Singapore’s top ten appetisers” (by whom – that’s what I want to know), is battered prawn covered in gloopy mayonnaise. It’s from the local section, though, and I’m not local - so perhaps I just don't understand the magic that is fat-fried batter in a quart of more fat.

My steak arrived about five minutes after everyone else’s food but still five more before the chips they ordered (and chased). It was fine – taste wasn’t bad at all – although it was rather less than medium done. The chips that come with it were also used – for no readily apparent reason – as a couple of quite separate rafts on which to perch any other food on the plate, such as the very undercooked single piece each of broccoli and carrot. The grilled seafood platter was okay – ranging from quite good scallops to rubbery-as-buggery squid. Since it’s SGD128 you would hope for something a little more consistent.

We had the pleasure of two interruption types during the meal. The first is that there’s a set of wandering minstrels. They sing and play very well indeed, no mistake. However, see my comments above re “in-house dining in a mid-range resort”, to which the luau-style entertainment only adds force. The other problem is that they come and subject you to their songs at point-blank range when I’m really there to:

        a) have a chin-wag with chums; and
        b) eat food.

It’s awkward because you feel that doing either while they croon at you from two feet away seems terribly disrespectful.

A related problem was that the staff noted during our conversations (maybe they aren't so blur after all...) that one of our party had a birthday that day. This means a rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” was wheeled out. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who finds being serenaded with a birthday song excruciatingly embarrassing and slightly tedious. (I once went to Morton’s on my birthday and thanked the heavens that I kept it secret: the staff there must have burst into “Happy Birthday to You” at least – no lie here – seven or eight times at other tables).

The other interruption was a load of squawking, screeching, running-about-being-irritating-and-not-controlled-by-their-parents German kids. Don't get me wrong, I love kids (okay, that is a lie: I hate kids), but when they are obviously interrupting your other patrons, restaurant staff have to step up, do their job and ask the parents to keep the little buggers under control as nicely as possible. Not let them charge about shouting and thwacking each other about the coupon with little glowing sticks.

What I’m saying is, don’t come here for a romantic beach-side candlelit dinner – there may be kids running riot and awkward serenading.

It’s not all bad, though: the wine is about 25% less than you would pay elsewhere for exactly the same bottle. Although, avoid the Oyster Bay sauvignon blanc like the plague: just buy the Champagne. The food is about what you’d expect at in-house dining in a mid-range resort - i.e. adequate but not great value. The staff are terribly pleasant to go with the vagueness and air of uncertainty. You can see, and if outside hear, the ocean. Get here early and the sunset is worth seeing. Most importantly, the ghastly kids have probably returned to Germany by the time you read this review.

What a long-winded comment. The grammar and the way it was written only gave me a migraine! Racist comment about Germans are not necessary. For all you know, they have probably said bad comments about this diner too.

            !

Well, had I suggested the riotous behaviour of the nippers was a product of their Teutonic genes, I'd be forced to agree with you. As it is, they happened to be German (okay, possibly Austrian). I'm afraid we occidentals reserve the right to poke gentle fun at each other from time to time.

As for the accusation of prolixity... guilty as charged. So what did you think of the restaurant?

[Edit: Do you know, I've just noticed that:

            1. You've only done three reviews
            2. They are all of Barnacles
            3. They are all within a one-month period and
            4. That the average score is 9.6, with 6/12 marks being full tens.

So I guess you really really really really really really (one for each of the tens…) like this restaurant to the exclusion of all others?]

Thanks for the entertaining and witty review, which - contrary to what Joey Rivera may think - was well-written and at the very least grammatically correct. Good read.
        • Bad experience

          Dec 13, 2008
One of my worst experiences at a restaurant of its class. Moreover, I was celebrating my wife's birthday, which ended up with us feeling very unhappy.

          1) The waitresses were paying MORE attention (too obviously) to the 'Ang Mohs', rather than me and my wife. We almost had to use shouting to get their attention when we needed something.

          2) I had ordered a Seafood Platter on Ice for 1 and a chef's mixed grill for me and my wife. First dish to be served was the Oysters, and they came in a dozen, so I starting eating (I didn't notice that it was supposed to be 6 for Platter for 1 and 12 for Platter for 2). Next came my wife's Mixed grill. Following that, a waiter came beside me with a HUGE tier of Seafood on ice, and I mean HUGE... So I confirmed with the waiter whether it was Platter for 1, and he replied that it was Platter for 2, and that he was also a bit shocked that I had made that order. He then took back that HUGE tier of seafood and told me that he'll get it changed. He took a look at the plate of oysters that I had started eating and suggested that I will be charged for an extra half dozen of oysters since I have already started. I was pissed, but I chose not to show it and said ok. By the way, during the initial order taking, the waitress did not repeat my orders (something which even MacDonalds staff knows that he/she should do it). Another waitress, who asked me whether I wanted Maine or Australian Rock Lobster, when being asked what's the difference between those 2, was dumbfounded and could only say "er...".

          3) After all this episode, we finished our meal and called for the bill. The bill came, and it was an astounding $500+!!! I had already told myself that I must scrutinise the bill when it comes, and true enough, I was charged for Seafood Platter for 1 and Seafood Platter for 2 as well!!! Amazing, isn't it. At this point, I took the bill from the waitress, and approached the counter where the outlet manager was, and told her all the mistakes that her staff made. She was professional abt it, apologised profusely and gave us a 15% disc, and took away the extra half dozen of oysters as well. Well, at least something was being done to appease the customer, and this was the only good part that came out of the whole episode, which was meant to be an enjoyable one.

I hope that the manager takes a look at the reviews here, and do something about the level of service, especially when serving Singaporeans. When it comes to food and service, we are as big, if not, bigger spenders than the "Ang Mohs"!

Have to start by saying that the view from the restaurant (window seat) is simply amazing. Very romantic, ideal for a first date, or marriage proposal. Either one :)

My friend and I had the 4 or 5 course meal (including dessert). One of the packages. Received complementary bread and butter before the meal. The food portions are kind of small though. Maybe all fine dining restaurants are supposed to be like that? (After dinner, had to go drop by Macs for a snack). But I did enjoy the salmon dish as well as the soup they served.  From what I can remember the service was pretty good. Waiters are friendly and helpful.

I would recommend people try this place out at least once :)

the view is scenic and very nice, the place well kept and inviting. the decor is warm enough and not very fancy which is just perfect for a relaxed dinner. their chili crabs is really, really good that you'd like to eat with your bare hands and savor every bit of the crab meat. overall, the price is ok considering the menu they have to offer. The staff is friendly but some seem preoccupied and stiff, it would help if they're friendlier towards the customers. service is good but nothing exceptional. it's a good place to go to if you're near the area but not really something you'd like to go to if you have to travel for quite some time. But the scene is definitely worth the trip at least once.

            • potential romantic place for the special nite

              Feb 15, 2010

reason why i said potential is that the place is really quite romantic (facing the sea + the sunset, and imagine if you have a nice champange to go with that ~.~ ) but i was there with like 10 other rowdy people.... so wrong company but definitely the right place =D

the must try food - the seafood platter - is really quite something. there were quite a few selections on the platter, and the portion is generous. the alaskan snow crab, lobster, crayfish, pearl clams, prawns. i am not usually a crab-person, but i really like the snow crab! it was chilled just nice and the legs were real sweet and juicy! Four to a platter is still a bit too much for the ladies, but i can see the guys really having the time of the day.

we tried quite a bit on the chinese menu too, the white baits, ying yang toufu, some prawn stuff. they are generally ok, but i think by then i was 70% full from the platter so couldn\'t really enjoy them.

there is also the seafood grill platter. i think i will go back to try that another time. Only concern about this restaurant is the accessibility. Kinda out of the way and not sure how Sentosa is going to become with the IR and theme park. Hope it doesn\'t get too crowded...

              • Stunning seaview, stellar seafood

                Jan 28, 2010

Barnacles don't exactly conjure up the most attractive of images but thankfully the food (not the crustacean!) more than makes up for the unfortunate association.

As a restaurant located off the mainland, on kitschy, tacky Sentosa and linked to a hotel chain, it is little wonder this place doesn't quite have top of mind recall when one thinks about good places to eat.

And you know what? Perhaps it's better that this seaside gem remains under the radar! Because the food is simply stellar.

Dinner started off with a side of bread and dips - three different rolls, sesame coated breadstick, lavash bread, and crispy, crumbly garlic toasts accompanied by creamy avocado dip, a mildly spicy tomato-y chilli dip, balsamic/oil and butter. Extremely addictive and moreish it can be very easy to overindulge; exercise restraint for the real stars of the menu!

The starter of wok fried white bait was easily one of the best white baits I'd ever tried. Generously seasoned with chilli powder and five spice power, this asian interpretation  needed no dips aside from a lashing of fresh lemon. The white baits were larger than the average and remained crispy on the outside and well cooked on the inside throughout the entire dinner - no mean culinary feat! Be warned - yet another highly addictive, mouth poppin', finger licking dish.

Next up was the yuan yang tofu. This is essentially two cubes of homemade tofu topped with spinach leaf and deep fried. Yuan Yang because one is spicy (sweet/spicy prawn topping) and the other isn't (straw mushroom topping). Firm, smooth, and full of soya milky goodness, this is an indulgent take on the humble, plain tofu.

Yin Yang was next - crispy deep-fried baby squids and crispy mayo prawns. The baby squids were crunchy and crispy without being hard or dry while the mayo prawns had a crispy batter and were firm, bouncy and incredibly fresh inside. The mayo was a tad sweet but not cloying, although personally, I would have preferred a wasabi version. But a very well executed dish nonetheless.

Now, the next dish is probably the most memorable for me. The ubiquitous Szechuan hot and sour soup which often ranges from bad to mediocre was outstanding here. Chicken stock, big sweet scallops, chunks of crab meat, tofu, and fungus make up this flavoursome soup that was sweet, tangy and sour all at once. And don't be fooled by the seeming lack of spice at first sip - the use of whole pepper roots as opposed to peppercorns means that the spiciness kicks in later, leaving a fiery aftertaste that permeates the whole mouth. Brilliant.

The seafood fried rice that came after proved to be a good complement to the soup, with its clean, very lightly seasoned grains that were perfectly cooked with a whiff of wok hei, and topped with fried baby anchovies.

Thus far, the menu had been predominantly chinese but Barnacles proved its competence in western dishes with the braised beef cheeks on top of truffle mash. As a non-meat eater, I had to pass on the beef and turn to the truffle mash instead. My only complaint was that the mash came sitting in the gravy which masked most of the truffle flavour - it would be better to ask for the mash on the side as the beef cheek is heavily sauced and having a plain truffle mash would help balance the flavours better.

The piece de resistance of Barnacles has to be their seafood platter on ice. This is a huge (serves 4) mountain of Boston lobster, crab, oyster, prawns, clams, periwinkles and bullots served with several sauces/dips and brown bread and butter. Sweet, fresh, cold - this is any seafood lover's dream.

The decadent dinner rounded off with a profiterole with vanilla ice-cream and chocolate sauce. Nothing spectacular, this was an acceptable, if forgettable, sweet ending.

Food aside, Barnacles also scores high on location with its sea/beach front vantage that has seen many a wedding proposal.

With food that good and a rare, tranquil beach spot, it's reason enough to schlep it over to Sentosa over and over again.

              • Panoramic Seaview Dining

                Jan 27, 2010

Someone once lamented to me how difficult it was to find a nice resto that is by the sea. That person, a romantic at heart, was describing how beautiful it will be if one could enjoy wining and dining with a panoramic seaview together with the sunset at dusk.

Barnacles at Sentosa is just this place. I think it fits the bill: the cool seabreeze, the panoramic seaview from the restaurant and the beautiful sunset (weather permitting, that is). The interior is fully glassed, allowing diners within to behold the changing colours of mother nature's creation. At the alfresco, one will be treated to the breathes of seabreezes and the closeness to the sea. If you are like me, one will also appreciate the bar tables outside that are catered to smokers to enjoy a puff while sipping wines.

The menu of this resto covers both Western and Oriental cooking. This is because the kitchen is helmed by 2 main chefs who are responsible for each aspect of the menu. And may I say each of them does a fantastic job.

I was pretty encaptured by the offering of Whitebaits. The type of whitebaits served here are really well-fed. Every piece is a mouthful. The savoury and spiciness of the wonderful combination of salt and chilli powder essentially makes this a great finger food, addictive to say nonethess. The Yuan Yang Tofu is a chef specialty. The tofu is freshly made from soy bean daily . The addition of scallops with delectable seafood gravy and mushroom oyster sauce give another dimension to a usually boring dish. I did not really love this but the Sichuan Hot and Sour Soup may be a favorite of others. A great deal of ingredients can be found in this bowl: scallops, prawns, tofu, black fungus etc. This dish may appeal to the ladies but personally I find this a little to spicy and sour for my delicate tongue.

On the western side of the house, I loved the Braised Beef Cheek. This was served in a red wine reduction and beef jus, served together with carrots, baby onions, mushrooms and truffle mash. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate the offering of truffle mash here. The cheeks were fantastic, very tender and soft with the eveness spread of fats. This dish is quite a big portion but if you like truffles or beef cheeks as much as me, you would not want to share it. The Seafood Platter on Ice was a sight to behold. Atop a bed of crushed ice, there were frutti de mare of the very best: Boston lobster, alaskan crab, oysters, scallops, bullots, periwinkles and clams. This gigantic plate was sweet, succulent and fresh. Lastly, the dessert of Chocolate Profiteroles with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream provided a nice ending to a wonderful dinner.

This is a place to recommend to that friend of mine, to be charmed, to be romantised or blown away by the food.

              • Charming seaside dining

                Jan 27, 2010

We did not realize a place like Barnacles existed - a rare true oceanfront venue which was actually done up tastefully with green lawns surrounding the restaurant and a lovely sunset for those coming early at 630pm.

Dont let the initial sign by the carpark set the tone - the sign looks like it is from 1985! Walk the little pathway into the restaurant area and you feel like you are at the seaside restaurant at an island resort.

The food is much more personalized than something you would expect from a hotel-owned restaurant (even if it is the Shangri-La). The chefs take pride in their work and it shows. The menu is eclectic with western and eastern which is something i usually worry about at restaurants. But in Barnacles case, there is a head chinese chef and a head western chef and each takes care of his/her own dishes.

The beef cheek was excellent - extremely tender and juicy - one of the best i have had in Singapore. At S$20 per dish, this was a steal. In fact i dont know how they make money at this pricing. We enjoyed the whitebait as well as they were plump and lightly sprinkled with a very addictive spice.

The seafood platter was of stunning in presentation and loaded with Boston lobsters, crab, cherrystones, and those medium and small snails. Everything was fresh, and as importantly, chilled nicely. The oysters they served were extremely fresh and only needed a dash of lemon. Sublime.

A chocolate profiterole dessert made up for all that food with a sweet finish with an elegant chocolate sauce. This combined with the really lovely setting made for a really relaxed dinner. The couple tables outside facing the sea are really well positioned, but you have to tolerate no air conditioning, so needless to say most of those outside were westerners.

Great meal with a wonderful ambience at a great location.

                • Seafood with a view

                  Jan 27, 2010

Disclaimer: Like wonderdoggy, I visited Barnacles at HGW/the restaurant's invitation.

Now then. The ambience at Barnacles is lovely. In most restaurants, one has to choose between a nice view and tropical temperatures in the outdoor section, and a so-so view and cool airconditioning in the indoor section. At Barnacles, the view from indoors is lovely, and you won't feel like you're missing out.

The restaurant has recently made some tweaks to its menu, but on the whole, the standout dishes are, unsurprisingly, the seafood.

The whitebait was much nicer than the version formerly served at the eponymous (and now closed) Whitebait and Kale, probably because the chef at Barnacles adds chilli powder, dried prawns and other savoury spices to the batter. Addictive.

Another standout was the cold seafood platter, which was more like a seafood tower and arrived chockfull of succulent and fresh seafood. This would be an excellent starter to share with a group of very hungry friends.

In all, I think Barnacles strives to rise above its hotel-restaurant staus, and does so admirably, with little touches like serving Echire French butter and tofu made on the premises. Oh- but enjoy the free parking at Rasa Sentosa while it lasts.

                  • Great setting and fresh seafood!

                    Jan 27, 2010

Disclaimer : came here last night on invite by restaurant via Hungrygowhere reviews. So it was a complimentary meal to try out a new menu.

                    Ambience :

The place is tucked away on an edge of Sentosa and nestled within a garden path that leads to the restaurant. The restaurant faces the sea and in the evening is quite enchanting and romantic. Blue is the predominant team and interior furnishing is more like a nicely decked out cafe along the USA coast.

                    Service :

Service was generally good and we got to meet their Chefs who were clearly very enthusiastic about the new menu.

                    Pricing :

I have to say the prices of the new menu are very reasonable and make Barnacles a very value for money place based on the quality of food they are serving. Of special note is the Beef Cheeks which are going for just $20 each. That is already a full main course portion.

What we ate. Will start with the best dishes first! :

                    1) Braised Beef Cheek.

As mentioned above, this is seriously a high quality dish. The cheeks were braised to melt in your mouth softness and the red wine reduction sauce was an excellent complement and brought out the beefy flavours even more. Chef Joanne said she used 2 glasses of red wine per dish. I think she is onto something good here. More over, at just $20, it is very cheap. I remember eating something similar at Equinox that cost a few times more with smaller portions.

                    2) Seafood Platter on Ice

What can I say, the last time i ate something so decadent was back when my cholestrol was still low. I must say Barnacles version is more generous than Mezza9. We had Alaskan Snow Crabs,Lobsters, large clams, some sea snails stuff, prawns and oysters from Britanny. All were very fresh and cooked to perfection then chilled before serving.  For $199, I think quite a good deal as it can feed 4 quite well.

                    3) wok fried white bait.

This was very well executed with a slight chilli base and the chef used pretty enormous pieces of white bait. Very addictive! We could not stop.

                    4) Yuan Yang Tofu

The tofu was soft and well fried with a good wok smell. But it is similar to what we can get in other Chinese Restaurants, so ok.

                    5) Yin Yang Squid and mayo prawn

This dish again was decently executed though it tasted just like any other good seafood place.

                    6) Sichuan Hot & Sour Soup

This was i think the least well made dish of the night. Portions were good and it was served piping hot. But the sour taste was a little overpowering and the overall flavour not so ideal.

                    7) Fried Rice Seafood.

This was normal fried rice. I would not say so spectucular.

All in all a pleasant evening with HGW friends and made some new friends too. Will definitely go back to Barnacles to makan but I think would eat from the Western menu more.

                    • Good experience, marred only by rat

                      Jan 4, 2010
My boyfriend brought me to Barnacles to celebrate my birthday. In general, it was a pleasant experience and we would return to Barnacles.

The service was prompt but unintrusive, and the waitresses were attentive. We chose the festive set menu, which we thought was more value-for-money. We especially loved the tiger prawns as they were very fresh and were very nicely done with a bit of charred taste. We also enjoyed the wagyu beef which was very tender. The watermelon sorbet that came before the main dish was too sweet at first taste, but we soon got used to the taste and subsequently enjoyed it, though we would have much preferred if the ice pieces were not so large and we didn't have to crunch on the ice so much. Something smoother would have been better.

We dined alfresco, and there was a live band that went from table to table singing, from the tables indoors to those in the alfresco area. It was nice listening to the cheerful 4 band members singing and playing songs for the diners.

I was surprised by a birthday cake brought out by 2 waitresses after we finished our main course. Both of them sang me a birthday song, which was a nice touch.

We would have given Barnacles a higher rating if not for a few things that happened towards the end of our dinner. We saw a fairly large rat while tucking into the cake and dessert, and it ran under our table and close to my feet (I didn't dare to look; my boyfriend told me) before scurrying away. We certainly hope that there are no rats in the kitchen.

After we finished the cake and souffle, we were waiting for the pralines which were supposed to be the last dish on the festive set menu. However, after waiting for quite some time (which was odd, as the waitresses were usually quite prompt with serving the next dish when we were finished with the preceding dish), we decided to ask if that was the end of dinner, and the waitress said yes. We wondered if the pralines had been replaced by the birthday cake but we didn't voice out this question. It wasn't a big problem, as we were quite full even without the pralines. But it would have been preferred if we were told that we were not going to be served the pralines, then we wouldn't have waited some time for it.

We enquired about getting a rebate for our entry fee to Sentosa, but was asked to present a receipt. When we explained that we were not given any receipt at the gantry into Sentosa, we were told that there will then be no way where we can be given the rebate. We thought it was somewhat inflexible (as how else would we have been able to get to Barnacles?) but accepted it as the restaurant's policy.

We would still like to return to Barnacles another day, to try its recommended dishes e.g. yin yang. Hopefully, we won't see a rat the next time.

                      Dec 24, 2009
Tried dining at Barnacles for my wife's Birthday as I had wanted some place more quiet and away from the buzzing City. To keep things short:

                      - Wonderful ambience as the restaurant is sited right at the edge of a somewhat private seaside of Rasa Sentosa (So there is no one splashing on the water as you dine)

                      - Excellent tip top service by each of the servers, polite and sincere in their work

                      - The steak and lamb rack are really good and my next trip would be to try their Seafood Platter, though if only they could just improve on the size of their serving

                      - Price is higher than your usual steak house but the ambience and live music should make it worth every penny

There was no rushing as you would experience in some restaurants after you finish your food and you can just sit around to enjoy the waves and music with a glass of wine. After dinner, we took a short walk along the quiet beach which sums up a pleasant night for the Birthday baby. :)
