  1. A rare find in Yishun

    Mar 22, 2007
Bei Sheng Seafood Restaurant is not one of those fanciful restaurants with expensive prices. Au contraire, the food served is not only delicious, but cheap as well!

My first visit was during the weekends, on a sunday evening to be exact. There was a crowd waiting outside the restaurant, a good indication of the place's popularity. During our wait, we were presented with the menu and we made our order before entering the restaurant. (Alternatively, you can wait till you are seated before placing an order; no one is hurrying you to do so.) Since our order was already placed, the food came extremely quickly, after we got a table.

We ordered sambal prawns, sliced fish, lemon chicken, sweet & sour pork, kai lan, and soup - the bill came up to only $40 plus. And despite the already cheap price, the boss shaved off a dollar plus off the bill to make it a round figure! Drinks are ordered separately, and at a coffee-shop-price, i.e. 70 cents for a cup of chinese tea.

On the next visit, we ordered pineapple rice and chilli crabs (price per kg, according to market rate), and once again, the food and service did not disappoint.

The place is air-conditioned, though there are tables outside the restaurant for those who prefer al fresco dining.

Ps. For those who are living in Yishun, the restaurant is located near Chong Pang; the same building where the now-defunct Big Bookshop used to be.

The owner of this restaurant is the same owner who operate a Teochew-Thai Food Resturant at Sembawang Shopping Centre. Both are as good ! :)

Oh I didn't know that! Perhaps I should try the one at Sembawang SC too. Thanks for the tip! =)
  2. Cheap & Good!

    Jun 14, 2007
Decided to take a long trek from Boon Lay to Yishun with my gf and her family for dinner at Taste of Thailand. There are actually 2 outlets of this very popular restaurant but both of them are currently in Yishun (One used to be at the Old Sembawang Shopping Centre, but moved out just recently due to renovations to the mall). As mentioned earlier, this place is popular, which means you have to be prepared to wait for a table. Just for the record, we waited for about half an hour for our table.

Once you have registered your name at the counter, your orders will be taken and you have a choice of sitting in the artificially cooled interior or the naturally cooled exterior. Be prepared to wait longer if you want to sit in the air conditioned section.

The pineapple fried rice was a cut above average with its miniature shrimps, meat floss and deep fried onions. The rice was evenly fried and not too dry or moist. However, something very important was missing - the pineapple taste. Having said that, still decent and certainly bang for the buck.

I liked the fried fish quite a bit. The skin was crispy whereas the flesh was soft and a little sweet with a lingering aftertaste, albeit a little dry. The fish was quite a size for the price as well. Remember to try this one out!

The sweet potato leaves were not too shabby with the leaves fried with dried shrimps and a wee bit of chilli. Nicely spicy and fragrant with no sticky residue or aftertaste.

Deep Fried Squid - The Chinese version of Calamari. The batter covering the squid wasn't too thick and gave a nice texture but could do with a little more seasoning to improve the flavours. The squid was cooked just right and maintained a little chewiness. A very decent dish.

Prawn Paste Chicken - Although this dish seemed quite popular amongst the other patrons of the restaurant, I didn't quite take to it as the paste was a little too bland for my liking. The taste wasn't strong enough to invoke any salivation on my part nor was it fragrant enough.

The cereal prawns was a steal at just $15, with probably about 12-15 prawns or so. The prawns weren't the freshest of the lot, but fresh enough. The cereal was nicely fried but came across as a little too bland for my liking (probably lousy cereal). An addition of cut chilli might have injected a little more flavour into it.

I would be lying if I said that we weren't full after all the dishes. In reality, we were too stuffed to even make it to the car. All for a mere $75/- for 7 pax. Now lets see, that makes it about $11/pax for a 7 course dinner which includes seafood. This is probably as cheap as it gets for such a decent quality of food. Service was good and prompt too, which is an added bonus. If you haven't tried out this joint, I highly recommend that you do so.

    • Thai food in a zhi zar place....

      Jul 19, 2008
I went with Bro and sis-in-law for a dinner gathering on Thursday night. It was about 645pm when we arrived and the indoor air-con seating was full and on wait list. (approx 30 min waiting time). We choose to sit outdoors instead and its not that hot as alot of fans to cool the air.

We ordered the Tom Yum Soup (L size as we like to drink soup), Fried calamari (S), San1 Wei4 Yu1 Three Flavour Fish (S) and the Crab Meat Tofu (S).

The Tom Yum soup tasted mildly spicy and sour. Lots of sotong and a decent bit of prawns (with shell hor so fingers gotta the work) and fish slices. A bit heavy on the msg. 7/10

Fried Sotong is nicely battered and not overtly oily. Good taste. Can eat. 8/10

The 3-flavour fish is actually a deep fried garoupa served with the sweet, sour, spicy (3 flavours) sauce by the side. Good thing the sauce is separated so you can dip the preferred amount or it will become overwhelming! 8/10

The Crab meat Tofu is the most puzzling. It should be called Prawn Steam Tofu. The rounds of tofu came topped with a prawn each (6 pcs in total) and the only creabmeat i managed to discern came in the sauce mixed with egg white... ~dUh~ 6/10

Overall, good value for money and a filling meal indeed. Not really Thai food but more of Thai-inspired Zhi Zar IMHO.

      1. Must try!

        Mar 9, 2010

Went there on sunday ( 07/03/10), was told that no reservations can be made on weekends as they have too many customers and it would be unfair if someone reserves a table. Fair enough.

We reached at 8, place our orders and was told to wait for 25~35mins, went for a walk. Came back to the place, our table was ready within the time stated by the host. Good.

As the dishes were pre-ordered even we sat down, all of them were served pretty quickly, we had Pineapple rice, Cereal Prawn, the 3-flavor fish, fish maw soup, chilli crab, 4 season bean.

Overall i spent about 90$ for 6 person, which is about $15 for each, the service was pretty quick partly because my table was right at the front. Only 1 thing not so nice is the comments which my gf gave bout the toilet, not so clean, so the Restaurant might haf to look at this problem.

        • A waist bursting meal that's a sensory delight, yet easy on the wallet.

          Jan 16, 2010

How many times have we been disappointed by the Tze Char store near us? They virtually swindle us out of our hard earned cash by charging us too much for a tiny portion of pathetic food. Don't we all yearn for a good dinner that is easy on the wallet? If you're with me so far, the search may be over. -Cue- Bei Sheng Seafood Restaurant, a little known Chinese Thai Restaurant hauled up in ChongPang, Yishun. Before you grimace at this unfamiliar location, the long trek that you will inevitably start may be worth your effort.

This Restaurant has quite a following as it was previously much vaunted in its former location, Sembawang Shopping Center pre-renovation. The queues there on weekends can be fairly daunting for people nursing their hunger pangs. Due to their renovation, they have since relocated to ChongPang,Yishun. Their location may have changed but nothing else did. The usual throngs of customers on weekends still bear testament to their excellence. They serve hearty meals at very affordable prices. Two or three diners can savor five or six dishes, pay with a fifty dollar bill and leave with plenty of change in the pocket. These days what can we buy with a fifty dollar note? Plenty if you're at Bei Sheng Seafood. Let me show you a few pictures of my latest conquest at the restaurant and you may be inclined to agree with my observations.

I went there with a buddy who isn't much smaller in girth as I am. I am also not joking when I tell you that I’m a big guy. The restaurant is simply furnished and there is no ambiance to speak of. I imagine weekends' rowdy crowds will stop any attempts at murmuring sweet nothings to a special one, so do not go there for a first date! Service was prompt and adequate. Now, to the stars of the show! We chose the following dishes.

          1.Pineapple Rice ( medium ) $5
          2.Black Pepper Sotong ( Small ) $6
          3.Kong Bo Chicken ( Small ) $6
          4.Seafood Toufu ( Small ) $6
          5. Stir-fried Kailan  ( Small ) $3
          6. Tom Yam Soup ( Medium ) $6

1.The Pineapple rice came on a hefty oval plate and it can easily feed 3 small diners. The rice is dyed yellow and one can chance upon juicy chunks of pineapple from time to time. The rice is fragrant and goes well with the meat floss generously tossed on top. Quite an alternative to the boring bowl of Thai plain rice.

          2. The Black Pepper Sotong came as thickly cut rings caked by a black colored pepper sauce. It's not that spicy to suit local palettes. It does provide a chewy and tangy biting experience with just a tinge of spice. Truly enjoyable for everyone with good teeth. Sorry Granny!

          3. The Kong Bo Chicken featured chunky yet tender pieces of meat surrounded by a bunch of dried chili and Onion slices. At the risk of sounding like an old record, it's not that spicy but it certainly has more kick than the nondescript versions served at mixed rice stalls. It has none of the toughness and sinewy taste commonly associated with the dish. Probably the meat came from chicken thighs to ensure its tenderness.

          4. Seafood toufu came with slices of Japanese toufu accompanied by chunks of green pepper,Sotong circles, fish  and mushroom slices as well as the crown jewel , a couple of peeled prawns. I must confess to having minimal impressions of this dish as I was focusing my assault on stronger flavored dishes mentioned above. With my limited impression, this dish seems light on taste and would suit folks who are against MSG.It may also be good for recovering patients as well, due to its soupy texture.

          5. The most spectacular point about the Stir Fried Kailan must be its pricing. I have seen small portions at Cze Char Stall going for twice its price or more. This sizable plate cost a measly $3! We can barely get a serviceable plate of Chicken Rice for $3 these days. This delectable vegetable came coated with a liberal dosage of Oyster sauce. It should be an excellent companion along side plain rice but I am much too filled to try that combination. Still, it can't get much better considering how affordable it was.

          6. The cliché ''last but not least'' simply doesn't work here. I have instead left the best for the last. While I was whining about how mild previous dishes tend to be, this soup came choke-full with both ingredients as well as flavor. The chef spared no expenses and spices in ensuring the knock out punch within the deeply set bowl. I am just glad that Pacquiao didn't surface and floor me with one right hook. The soup is that impressive. I can virtually finish bowls of rice with the soup alone. It is that enticing on the senses. While the soup may have stolen the limelight, the bride and groom of the night doesn't come complete with the bridesmaid and best man. The soup came complete with a generous serving of fresh prawns, fish slices and Sotong. I am still salivating now as I am reliving its flavor in my head. It is that good. A must try. Don't let the plain pictures deceive your senses. Head to the restaurant and let your senses probe the dishes for their own good. Chances are they won't complain and neither will you.

All these visual descriptions may have numbed your monetary senses. All I paid for this feast was a measly $31; $1 was deducted for good measure. This policy of giving little discounts hasn't changed ever since their Sembawang Days.Somethings in life, like other good traditions just aren't meant to be changed. The day this diamond in the rough get transformed into another soulless chain coffee tiam, Yishun will be a much poorer place indeed. Not monetarily, but spiritually, after all for foodies like me with a tight budget, fabulous yet affordable food is literally a God send.

Before you start typing about how much of an exaggeration I may be making with regards to these humble dishes. Try it out and judge for yourself. As much as I would like to, I can't enjoy good food on your behalf, can I?

P/S: Don't mind the blurry Pictures, my Omnia handphone can only do that much. It’s my first attempt at food commentary as well; any constructive comments are more than welcome.
