| A Quiet Affair
Located next to sixth avenue next to the popular Yanqing's Shanghai Kitchen, Borgo's and Corduory & Finch, this new outlet which focuses on a blend of European (and somewhat French) cuisine has thrown itself into a competitive foray of quality restaurants in the sixth avenue area.
The layout is simple, something that one would find in the countryside. I attempted the set dinner which consisted of a portobello mushroom salad, a duck confit wtih mash potatoes, creme brulee with frozen passion fruit and a pot of English Breakfast ($45+). I generally liked the presentation of the food. The mushroom salad had a nice tinge of balsamic vinegar. The duck confit was standard but I thought it went well with the mashed potatoes which had a very smooth taste to it. For the dessert, the creme brulee was an interesting mix of sweet and sour. My advice is to start with the sour frozen passion fruit before heading to the sweet creme brulee and then washing it down with the English Breakfast.
In summary, I had a pleasant experience at the bistro - although it was a little too quiet for my comfort and at times was told by my date to lower my voice lest the restaurant staff hear everything I said. |

| nice place - but where are the anchovies!??!!??
I was there with my colleagues for lunch. Nice decor - classy, understated. Suede covered chairs. Very classy!
We had the 4-course set lunch which at $18.90++ was a good deal. We had a choice of the salad or soup, main course, dessert and coffee/tea. We looked at the menu and the rest of the items are quite expensive actually. Appetisers cost from $10 onwards. Main course $20 onwards. So the set lunch is really a good deal, or so we thought!
We were served the bread roll, wholemeal ones too. No butter, but was given olive oil in a nice little container. The bread was nice and fluffy, but tasteless. The olive oil was also tasteless. hmmm......
I chose the soup, which was seafood chowder. My friend ordered the salad. The soup is creamy, but cannot find any seafood bits! But tasty though. The salad is normal, something you can find anywhere. Nothing fantastic.
For the main course, I had the some chicken fricasse and my friend had the linguine pasta with Spanish anchovies. The chicken was hard, abt 8 pieces of it. Thank goodness for the sauce, otherwise it's really tasteless. Came with little pieces of vegs. Totally protein-rich main course.
The linguine pasta was tasty, slightly hot due to the chillies. But where are the anchovies?? we looked and looked, but couldn't find the Spanish anchovies. Swam away??
Dessert is forgettable. We were given some tea cake. Nice and spongy but again tasteless! The tea is too light to be tasted! My friend ordered the cheesecake! Forget this one! No cheese taste!! It tastes like some sponge cake!
aiyoh! forgettable experience! the chefs have lost their sense of taste?? granted i am basing my experience on their set lunch, but still....... |
