Have had a disappointing Friday evening at Broth. We were a pax of 13. With the intention to have our dinner and a birthday celebration for 3 of our friends. When we indicated our intention to have our birthday cakes there post dinner(it was just cupcakes and did not even require plates) the staff told us there will be 'corkage' charge of $15. This he explained was to cover the 'loss' from us not ordering desserts from them. This is silly, after dinner should we go elsewhere to have the birthday cakes, you also won't have desserts orders from us. By wanting to impose the 'corkage' your 'loss' is intangibly greater.

One of our friends who initially thought she couldn't join us there due to work commitment but finally made it was flatly refused when we requested to add another chair to our table. The staff was rude and arrogantly told us they have ran out of chairs and pointed out it was our fault for confirming we only have 13 pax when we made our reservation. He clearly lacked empathy skills and is very unprofessional. My friend eventually loss her appetite due to the commotion.

One of the birthday gal's order of Grilled Boneless Quail was served so late that she lost her appetite no thanks in part also due to the refusal to allow our friend to join us. I've also heard the next table enquiring about their food order.

Though later you  waived the 'corkage' charge, not a single staff (not a must but would have been a nice gesture) checked who is the birthday boy/gal or presented any birthday wishes.

I've been to smaller/ busier eateries with bigger heart.

I've thought I was in the wrong BROTH....was I in the same BROTH as the one who won accolades such as 'Best Service Establishment' or 'the Biggest Tip Jar'?

BROTH has been a huge let down.

    1. Jones Daisy I do pity you cos from all your 3 reviews(till date) of 3 different establishments, you had nothing good to say and all with the intent of either getting some waiver or freebies during your time at those places.

I wonder if a free meal from some lucky, or should I say unlucky establishment, would then be the perfect reason for you to start posting something positive?

For a commercialised day like V-day, it's often than not that restaurants will do their best to mark up their prices and literally concentrate on the profits (needless to explain) but I think BROTH has done more than enough to prove that they care for the comfort and the experience of their diners(couples) too. The entire process was well thought out as they explained meticulously the entire process and possible scenarios that may occur on the actual day over the phone so that we may understand and not get our expectations way too high. And then they live to deliver more than expected on the day itself. Though a tad too close for couples seated indoors, we were thankful for our table outside (thank God the weather was fine and we had fans blowing at us from all directions).

The 5-course we had, we totally  enjoyed, especially the waygyu beef which was so moist and tender!Staff also made the effort to check if we were enjoying the food and service from time to time which we really appreciated. Thanks guys from the bottom of me and my partner's hearts~!

I had called up the restaurant three weeks ago and made a reservation 3 weeks ago for valentine's day. When I arrived, my name wasn't on the list. I understand if there might have been some muck up and I wasn't looking for compensation.

But for some reason, the guy didn't even apologize on behalf of the restaurant. Zilch. None. Really? Would I have come all the way here with my girlfriend just so I could pretend I had a reservation? Seriously.

Horrid service. Truly one of the worst I've experienced. Ruined my Valentine's Day with my partner for a good bit. The fact that I called three weeks in advance just to make sure I had a table and that they screwed it up makes it sick.

    3. Boyz Astro The biggest coincidence for me in 2011! I was seated just right by the door of BROTH and witnessed the entire incident. But in contrary to what you have described, I thought that the staff handled the situation professionally and what amazed me was that you didn't even react angrily or persist on (unlike what seemed like a written altercation here) when he was asking you the routinal questions about the reservation process. It baffled me and my partner for such an occasion.

    4. Michelle Tan 631 What do you expect with just 1 review to his account?
      16 February 2011 13:48
    5. Dexian Wang Oh believe me, I was pretty close to it turning into altercation. Gf pulled me away. The guy just seemed way too aloof and unapologetic.
      16 February 2011 13:49
    6. Dexian Wang And yes, it is baffling that they screwed up for such an occasion. Without an apology too.
      16 February 2011 13:51
    7. Michelle Tan 631 Sounds like defamation to me though. Reservation posers on days like V-day are common anyway.
      16 February 2011 19:35
    8. Dexian Wang Heh. Yes. I would totally use my facebook to defame and make up a story. You are so smart!

I ended up at Sui Japanese Dining. Top notch review coming right up over the weekend. ;) Stop being such a troll. Thanks.
      17 February 2011 11:44
    9. Michelle Tan 631 I'm certainly smart enough to know thru your comments that you are MALE but your profile currently states you are FEMALE. So you certainly seem thrashy to me first and foremost. Secondly, I'm smart enough to know that a person (doesn't matter what kind of account you use) can spam and defame. So you sound super lame already so please grow some balls. Who's to know if you are truly a reservation poser who tried to impress your gf for whatever the reason and didn't get it your way?

One thing for sure, we readers know your TOP NOTCH REVIEW RIGHT UP OVER THE WEEKEND isn't really that top notch cos nothing has been up! I feel sad for this Sui Japanese Dining already but who knows...everything you say hold no credibility to me for sure!

    10. Boyz Astro I witnessed the incident and saw that the staff did the right thing to ensure the reservation on his list stayed intact. Along with their personal and professional service throughout the evening, I don't think they deserve what you have posted up Mr/Ms Wang. Michelle, you seem like you are an ardent fan of BROTH! They must have done something right to have someone like you defending on their behalf. But I think every forum active usuer will tend to agree with what you say too so yeah.
      22 February 2011 19:16
    11. Dexian Wang Eh. I only logged in using facebook connect so I didn't even know HGW listed me as female. I'm not spamming. The only defamation going on right now is your constant trolling. If you disagree with my evaluation, go ahead. I'm just posting what I experienced with them, so I didn't rate anything else I didn't get served with. Fair game. So thanks for the remarks about balls, but seriously. Go suck on Broth's.
      23 February 2011 01:40
    12. Dexian Wang Look, Astro... I'm sure they served you well. I'm not taking any offence, I'm just reviewing that they screwed up my reservation. Hence, I only rated the service portion and nothing else. So yeah.
      23 February 2011 01:41
    13. Ms Eat World Dexian seems genuine and probably Broth "may" be genuine in missing out his name...I'm sure Broth stayed professional throughout the process of recovering the issue (which anyone should expect no less) BUT I think Dexian was just expressing his frustrations for not getting his reservation and the apology. Take down the staff name before putting down the phone...At least you have a name to bank on when ironing out in future...
      23 February 2011 02:05
    14. Dexian Wang So yeah. Michelle, please stop embarrassing yourself by acting like a fangirl. I too wanted to try Broth out because of its reviews, so it must have been doing something right. Unfortunately, it didn't happen in my case. So what right? They're human too so of course they make mistakes. But that doesn't mean I can't rate them. It's my experience with them, not yours, not Astro's. If you disagree with it, fine. There are other negative reviews up on here (including another screwed vday booking), so if you're gonna troll every single one...be my guest.

But please, stop the damn name calling and ridiculous trolling. You're just embarrassing yourself. Grow up.

P.S. Sui has a higher recommendation rating. Ha.
      23 February 2011 02:07
    15. Dexian Wang Ah ha! Thank you Ms Eat World, a non angry robot sighting! Yes, I think yes when I typed this I was probably a bit too frustrated. So yes. Thanks for the tip...
      23 February 2011 02:11
    16. Ms Eat World And Dexian didn't defame...He just expressed he did not get his reservation and apology..Which isn't a big deal to anyone else...However Tan seems to be more like defaming Dexian with her language...I'd be careful though...

The quaint cobble-stoned path leading up to Broth starts your journey to a bit of Europe within Singapore. Dining at Broth reminds me of a small homely restaurant anywhere in Europe.. the cosy interior with warm lighting and wood nestled within a restored shophouse, and the quiet street outside where we prefer to sit, in candlelight.

For its name, the soup selection is limited- just one. But it usually lives up to it's name which it shares with the establishment; full bodied, rich and statisfying (it was Pumpkin on the day we went).

The mains are as expected- veges fresh, meats done right, good pairing wines. Amongst the many western eateries in Singapore, differentiating one from another tends to be the mood it creates during the experience, and Broth hits the spot for me for the warm feelings it gives- just like a cup of warm soup.

Had a gathering with my colleagues at Broth after work  (Been getting rave reviews about them in office).

Service was prompt and amicable I must say as they greeted us when we first arrived and asked if we prefered an indoor or outdoor seating (I did call to make a prior reservation but was advised to get an indoor seating first as the weather can be unpredictable these days > how thoughtful! :)).

We decided to be closer to the quaint street of Duxton since it was breezy on a Tuesday night. We were then asked for preference of warm or iced water (a trait which is a rare find these days as service staff would just assume).

My colleagues and I shared the crab cakes with plum chutney which was a winner for us as well as the foie gras, their signature (recommended by one of the stafff) lamb loin with herbs and ending off with their aussie pavlova.

A rare find and wonderful dining experience!

Must tries: Crab cakes, Foie gras, Lamb Loin

For starters - onion soup, foie gras - They come with complimentary bread (warmed) and nice salted butter. Onion soup - nothing much, the foie gras is decent.

Main - Lamb Shank ( My title says it all, the rosemary, the mint and the freshness and tenderness of the lamb is unforgettable and I don taste the funky lamb taste at all! I like it!)

Dessert - Sticky date pudding (Don let the name fool you!! It is a MUST try; melt in your mouth and absolutely sinful dessert)

I also like the little touches like the pretty steak knife, the vintage looking pepper grinder....

On top of everything is their Excellent service. Though it is a little pricey...but it is worth the indulgence.

This is a not an 8-second restaurant.

Food was good, service was discreet, wine perfect.  While the steak was not as good as Bedrock's (but it was still very good & and the presentation was better), the ambiance is streets ahead.  Again, very good to go out and not be interrupted every eight seconds.

I put Broth and Bistro du Sommelier in the same league.

Broth, I must applaud, has the best service standards by far in comparison to many of the f&b establishments I've gone to in Singapore.

Don't miss out on their desserts which are wonderful (I'm a sucker for sweets as I have a sweet tooth!)!

Another great dining place around Tanjong Pagar area not to be missed. Scrummy spread of authentic Aussie and fusion selections to satisfy our palates. Damn they changed the menu recently and took out my all-time favourite bruschetta, replacing it with an equally tantalising potato gnocchi. Service has always been unbelievably efficient and friendly.

Must tries: Bring back the bruschetta!

First of all, finding this place gets one talking (Where on earth is Duxton Hill?). Once you set foot on it, where else in Singapore can you find cobbled-stoned street and conservation shophouses? When you see the service staff, where can you find servers wearing bling bling belts bearing their names? :D

Even the name is so interesting, where by BROTH is taken off the abbreviation of Bar Restaurant On The Hill, as highlighted by one of the amicable staff (although Duxton Hill doesn't exactly fit into the definition of a hill but nice idea there!)

Initially, thinking that it's their broth we shouldn't miss out on, my friends and I decided to order their soup of the day and it was really rich and yummilicious! The foie gras was also really well prepared although it's a tad too small to be shared amongst friends.

Their braised pork pasta was flavourful but lacks the bite of probably a lil more garlic and the signature lamb loin (again mentioned by the staff and after reading all the reviews) was not a letdown! Keep up the good work!

Must tries: Broth, Lamb Loin, Sticky Date Pudding
