  1. A Modest Winner

    Sep 29, 2009
After reading a little snippet in the papers about Burger Shack's opening I decided to give this burger joint a go over dinner, and despite the great skepticism I had with many burger joints opening recently, I truly enjoyed my evening at the shack.

We went on a weekend so it was packed with young adults and family-types. The first thing I noticed was how casual and relaxed the atmosphere was. There was no sign of pretence. A simple menu. A concise explanation of the fresh ingredients that they use. Raw interiors reminiscent of a New England beach shack. Yes, a couple of boisterous kids. Yes, self-service. But me and my dining buddies immediately felt at ease knowing this was going to be a straightforward meal with no pretensions.

The ordering system is simple and informal. You order at the counter and collect your food when the number is called. Somewhat similar to the In & Out burger style of ordering if you know what I mean. It was pretty crowded that night so we waited about 20 minutes before our meal arrived. But boy was it worth our time.

The burgers we had were excellent. Soft, fluffy buns that were lightly toasted. Juicy NZ beef patties (that I understand are hand-made by the chefs). The fries (shoestring FTW) were also excellent with a slight dusting of spices. My only gripe is that they had chosen a one-size fits all approach to making the patties well-done. I had the BBQ pulled pork burger, and it was clearly a winner. The waitress explained that the pork was slow cooked before lathered with home-made BBQ sauce. (I'll be back for this one).

Inevitably our conversation lead to comparisons with their friendly competitors like Relish and Hand Burger. But for $5.70 a burger, it struck me that the folks at Island Creamery had given us a dinner that was on par with the big boys. Sure, no fois gras between the buns, and no truffles with the fries, but with the care that was obviously put into their food, it was evident that the focus was on the food and not the hype.

Mad Jacks had better seek asylum and Botak should be pulling out their hair. Will definitely be back and highly recommend it as a casual hangout.

    • damn good burger

      Oct 1, 2009
to be honest, i read with dismay what the first few reviewers said about Burger Shack, that it sucked, because i seriously happy that a new burger place had opened near my school (cos, well, school food is bleagh).

i decided to try the shack nonetheless, and i'm so glad i did! I went there around 6pm on a thursday and there were quite a number of customers, but there was ample space. I guess even if you didn't have a seat you could take away and walk along bukit timah road, muching away on the wonderful burger.

I got myself an original burger meal, so that came with fries that were seasoned with what looked and tasted like paprika. haha not very secret, but still, nice. they stayed crispy till the last bite, even when they were cold, so that they tasted great even when cold. The burger itself was really mouth-watering. My friend who wasn't ewven hungry in the first place decided to buy a burger after watching me take a few indulgent bites.

      the burger:
the bun was super fluffy, not hard at all, contrary to what earlier reviewers said. i wonder if they sorted out that prob, or simply decided not to hand make their buns anymore and bought the buns. still, the buns looked, felt and tasted much better than average buns. i would have liked to try the original "harder" buns though, cos i have a feeling they might be closer to baguette texture, and i simply love chewy bread. then again, perhaps a soft fluffy bun complements a juicy beef patty better. apparently the beef patty contains wagyu for this period of time, though i could not discern it. still, the patty was grilled medium (delightful)and there was an addictive meaty tasting brown sauce in the burger that i kept swiping my fries at. good amount of sauce, and not so much that the bread becomes soggy and you feel like you're eating roti john instead of a burger.

all in all, a great meal, and judging by how quickly they got over their teething problems (the last bad review was on 26 sept), i think this shack is serious about serving up good and affordable food. i'll be real loyal to them, at least for a while. with the high fail rate of the restaurant business (i think around 60%), esp on this stretch of road (in 2 years, i've seen the coming and going of more than half a dozen eateries on bukit timah road) i really hope Burger Shack can continue to keep standards up and even improve in order to be a permanent feature here. affordability is a key, so ya, don't raise prices and you'll have no lack of student customers!

p.s. perhaps you could improve on the J burger. the sauce is not very nice, tasted a bit commercial. and tell people that the chicken is deep-fried, cos my friend bought it without knowing that and actually didnt really feel like eating deep fried chicken.

oh and some spots are really cold cos the air-con is blasting down on you, and it really maker your food cold in no time. and cold food is really unappetising.

I love burgers. From the Shake Shack in New York to Botak Jones at Clementi I've had one too many burgers in my life. But Burger Shack holds a special place in my jaded burger heart. For slightly more than the price of a meal at McDonald's I had one of the best burgers I've tried. The big difference was their fresh tasting patties that are apparently made from new zealand beef. They were also flame-grilled with a seared steak taste. I also loved the relish sauce that comes with the burgers. I highly recommend the original beef burger. Keeps the flavors simple and the food really shines through. Burger heaven and back. And no need to bust the bank either.

        1. Bukit Timah's Top Picks

          Feb 4, 2010

Many burgers (too many) and more servings of fries later, I'm glad to say that Burger Shack remains one of my favourite food haunts. Run by the island creamery people, Burger Shack has been one of my go-to places for a good meal at a good price.

Where else in sg can you get a Wagyu and NZ beef burger for $5.70? The quality of the food is excellent and really shines through for the price you pay. I feel slightly nauseous spending the same amount of money at MacD's, and so I dispel these bad feelings by having a good meal at the neighborhood shack.

Their burgers have a home-made quality to them, substantially separating them from industrially made varieties. That, along with their killer fries, makes a winning combination.

I've tried the BBQ pulled pork and mushroom suisse burgers and I'm glad to report both are delicious. The only downside to having tried these burgers is that I've been ordering the same things everytime I go back!

The restaurant isn't a fancy schmancy restaurant so leave your expectations of posh-ness at the front door. You may end up smelling like burgers, but probably one of the best burgers you've ever smelled.

This is the way fast food should be made. Burger Shack doesn't churn out burgers factory-fast, but the homemade quality justifies a short wait.

          • stale lunch

            Jan 22, 2010
The burgers were really a letdown. I had an original burger whilst my friends had various other burgers. The burger bun was stale and thick which really ruined the taste of the patty. Since the burger patties are allegedly made up of wagyu and NZ beef, it should have tasted pretty good but the buns made it impossible to taste the quality of the meat properly. After three bites, we resorted to eating the patty alone which was not all too fantastic as well. The tomato and onion sauce slathered on top made the beef soggy and the sauce itself was not even tasty. We had to add mayonnaise and chilli sauce to mask the taste of the food because we were starving. For it's price, the nearby fastfood chain at serene centre would be a much better option since it is cheaper and definitely much better tasting and has parking as well.

            • Serendipity with burgers

              Dec 29, 2009
Set up by the same peeps who brought us Island Creamery, the Burger Shack offers a wide array of gourmet burgers at pocket-friendly prices!

It's a self-serviced kinda eatery, and u will have to head to the counter to take ur orders n collect ur food when ur order is announced over the PA system.

During my first visit, I had a Pulled Pork Burger set, accompanied with fries n a drink for abt $9+. Though the burger was kinda small n cute in size, the meat was juicy n tender with more than enough sauce that whets ur appetite. Fries were awesome n tasted really gd, unlike those u'll find in fastfood chains. Side order of calamari was a tad pricey at $7+ which cost more than their burgers, but it tasted really savoury n fresh!

              • Could have been better

                Dec 28, 2009
Echoing what another reviewer had said, this was about expectations.. and how it fell short of.

A friend and I came for a good meal of burgers, and maybe to check out the new extension of the very-successful Island Creamery dessert place. Unfortunately, the poor ventilation of the restaurant, and more importantly the relatively poor standard of food got to us.

In honesty, the food is not bad on its own. If I served it during a Christmas gathering, I would have won praises (and kisses). But up against better competition (new burger joints are sprouting up aplenty these days), one can't help but feel he could have gotten a better deal elsewhere.

We ate the ramly burger and mushroom suisse, and calamari. While the beef patty was alright, the seasoning and the bread were sub-par.

                • Stick to ice cream

                  Dec 5, 2009
Perhaps I came with expectations, since imho, Island Creamery was one of the best places for Ice Cream in Singapore, or perhaps expectations were raised after I read "our pillow-soft buns are freshly baked by our in-house baker" and other marketing hype on the signboard at the ordering counter at Burger Shack. But I seriously think that the Island Creamery should stick ice cream or improve their buns.

I tried the Original Burger (S$8.20 with fries and a soda, $0.30 for iced tea upgrade); the size of the burger was large and quite comparable to what you get at Carls Junior. The "made from USDA potatoes" thin and long fries were served hot, and actually met my expectations and was comparable to the fries served from Mcdonalds.

My point of contention? The buns were not pillow-soft as advertised on the signboard, but were relatively hard and chewy. so much so that when you bite into burger I had to chewy many many times to digest the burger. I think the patty is fine, but when combined with the bun, it does not make a pleasant burger experience.

With Burger Shack located near so many schools, you will find students amongst the customers. You can feel the youthfulness and vibrancy of the eatery once you step in. Do note that students do get $0.70 off the set meal.

Lastly, I do feel that at this price point, I could actually go to Carls Junior where drinks are served free flow.

                    Nov 23, 2009
went there for lunch few days ago.

i ordered a BBQ pulled pork burger and top up another 3.50 for fries and drink. The pork is actually quite tasty but i think they need to work out something on the hard bun. fries is just the average fries.

near $10 for a set and it is not really filling for me. burger is kinda of small. ventilation is bad too, better not go if you have an appointment after this.

In the raining friday night, You bring someone to the burger stack to have a nice burger. don't you think is so romantic?

Let back to the burger. When we reach the burger stack, The light in the room is bright and not much people on the friday evening..

Let talk about food. Me and my hubby order Original burger & BBQ chicken both with fries and drink. It does not take long to serve the food and the filling is ok for a single person.

The original burger meat is tender and not so hard when you go to the normal burger shop as the BBQ chicken, my hubby say the BBQ sauce is a bit too salty. Overall the food is ok for me..

It will be ok if the music can turn abit lower..

                      • Late Lunch on Thu, 19/11/09

                        Nov 22, 2009
Anyone who reads the papers, watches the news or was involved in the congestion would know that there was a massive flood at Bukit Timah road last Thu. Unfortunately, I was one of those caught in the 1 hr traffic jam caused by the flood and coupled with a faulty traffic light. Was planning for a late lunch at one of the restaurants in the area whose last order closes at 230pm and we were nowhere near it at 3pm. Was scouring HGW site for restaurants around Bukit Timah for a restaurant that was still open for lunch past 3pm. To my delight, Burger Shack came up in the search.

As we were supposed to meet bestie for dinner around 3 hrs later, Peanut and I decided to share a burger, fries and dessert, just to quell the hunger pangs.

Stepping into the shack, the modest sized eatery reminds me of the term “girl next door”. It has a wholesome, unassuming vibe to it. One of the walls was painted blue and hung with pictures and messages of patrons that gave a very homely feel to the whole place. The long side of the wall paned with mirrors which gave a spacious illusion. I have no doubt the primary target audience is the students from the nearby schools. I remember being that age, where one constantly has the need to check out his/her reflection for some form of assurance. You never know when you will meet the puppy love of your life.

How the system worked is that one will place an order and pay at the counter. Then we wait. We could take a seat until our number was called out over the PA system. I didn’t mind so much the fast food casualness to this eatery. But I have said it before and I will say it again. I hate open kitchen! Especially in the indoors with air conditioning and without any glass window to separate the patrons and the smog from the cooking. Urgh.

J Burger ($6.20) consisted of a deep fried chicken patty sandwiched, with some greens, between 2 soft sesame buns, drizzled with okonomiyaki sauce. Let’s break the review of the J burger down to its constituting components. The chicken patty was very crispy albeit dry; meat was tender enough. Friends who know me well enough will know I am no fan of carbo and I’d usually discard the buns of any burger, sandwich or pau, especially if they are not the grilled and crusty kind after partaking in the contents. Out of curiosity, I took a bite, and I was hooked despite! Somehow, the fluffy like marshmallow buns sat well with me and I actually finished my share of the burger, buns included. The real disappointment in the burger laid in the sauce which was veritably tasteless. I had to dip my burger in the mayo and chilli sauce just to add some flavour to my burger.

Add $3.50 for a set meal that comes with fries and drink.

Love the skinny fries (akin to MacDonald’s fries) which was sprinkled with hot spice, which were ambrosial and crispy.

Apple Pie came lukewarm and we added a scoop of chocolate ice cream by the side. Apple Pie was blah but the chocolate ice cream was heavenly with the cookie crumbs in them. Love it! It was a pity Burger Shack only carried 3 flavours of ice cream from Island Creamery.

A big thanks to the staff for provision of warm water even though water was not usually served. Bottled water was available for purchase instead.

I thought the pricing was very reasonable given that Burger Shack serves up home-styled burgers rather than gourmet burgers and was easy on the pocket, especially for the schoolkids. Yes, I probably would shack up with this burger joint again, provided there was no traffic stopping flood on the roads.

                      • Die Die Must Fries!

                        Nov 15, 2009
Being a fan of the classic all-American burger, I can only say that Burger Shack has hit the nail on the head with extremely high quality food at good prices for their cool new eatery.

Last Sunday, we had our family lunch at Burger Shack and there was something for everyone. The menu is wide enough to cater to everyone's tastes (from meat to vegetarian, burgers to rice for my picky family members), yet sharp and tight so that every burger was a standout. The service staff were also extremely helpful in the ordering process when we needed special requests.

It took about 15 minutes for the food to be ready, and we collected our burgers when our number was called. I had the Original burger and that was simply divine. Apparently they use Wagyu and NZ beef in their patties, and it was immediately apparent that the quality was far superior than their "gourmet" counterparts. A steal for $5.70. The beef was well-seasoned and juicy. The relish sauce was also extremely good, and added a fresh flavor to the burger. I truly recommend this burger to anyone who is looking for a Singaporean yardstick for an authentic burger.

My brother ordered the BBQ pulled pork burger and it was another winner. It had a smoky tex-mex taste, a unique flavor for a burger. The Ramly was quite different from what we had expected, in a good way, without the chili sauce, but they added their own homemade sambal sauce which made the burger taste more robust than the original. The meals all came with their fries - the best I've had, crispy and lightly seasoned with their seasoning blend. Yum!

It was an excellent experience overall, packed with lots of families and young adults enjoying a relaxed lunch. With such good food at hard-to-beat prices, Burger Shack will be one of our new food haunts. A full-house says it all.

                          Nov 13, 2009
My first time at the Burger Shack... I stay 3 minutes from the place, it's a wonder I took so long to try the place. I ordered the original burger to go with fries and a coke. The fries were good, it took me less then 5 minutes to reach home and start eating... Unfortunately the burger was already cold, think they should warm up or toast the bun. The BUN! sigh, while the patty and the sauce was good, the BUN was too think, too hard and cold. I think if they rethink their bun, they might have a winner here.
