  1. Atrocious Service, Wrong Music, Spectacular Disaster

    Feb 14, 2007
As much as the place looked and felt really good, the basic service standard was atrocious.

It was the opening night and the girlfriend and I were unable to get a drink for the 2 hours we were there. All the wait staff either turn their blind eye or lied that they could not take customers' orders. Then I realized that they would only take orders only if you opened a bottle. Opening party is one thing, but cashing in like this is just not right. I have much doubts if they would improve in this area.

Being a Friday night, the amount of clothes were also, well, a little too much. But then again, the invited came straight from work, and in their conservative partying wear/casual work wear. It's a contrast to the ambience with that light-painted wade pool that was expecting frolicking bikini-babes (unfortunately there were none on Friday). So try going on Saturday instead.

The music on the opening night was totally off. Sure the DJs were good in their own right, but shouldn't the place sound and feel like Café Del Mar instead of MOS or Zouk? The DJ's spins were so different from the sample music on the website it felt you entered the wrong place. Plus there wasn't really a decent dancefloor, so I thought it was a major f***-up.

Once again, toilets. There needs to be government intervention on the minimum number of female toilet cubicles for a club. Once again the line at the ladies extended to forever, while there were only a handful of men in the gents. After so many establishments, new clubs ought to know that the ladies to gents ratio should be something like 5 : 1. But yet they would rather the ladies queue up in an orderly manner like some flesh parade... Oh wait, I guess that's the idea.

If I ever visit again, remind me to buy my beverages at the 7 Eleven and finish them before entering.

    • Top 10 Reasons Why Cafe Del Mar Needs to Hurry Up and Take My Drinks Order...

      Mar 22, 2007
      1. The waitstaff keeps telling us that we can’t sit on the nice daybeds unless we spend more than $200. All I’m trying to do is follow instructions!

      2. A few of those lovely jelly cocktails will significantly reduce my grumpiness from the heat and awareness of mediocre-to-poor service standards

      3. I need to be significantly boozed up to stop caring that at this beach bar the view of the sea is roundly blocked by blue netting

      4. If I drink enough I will eventually be persuaded that the Euro-trash model wannabes milling around the pool are more Euro and less trash. I'm open-minded like that.

      5. It makes me feel somewhere between silly and anal that after having sat down for 20 minutes I have to walk up to the bar to order drinks, when there is an army of waitstaff zipping about looking busy doing I’m not entirely sure what

      6. They could use the money to buy waterproof daybed seat coverings so that the next customer after a swimmer won’t have to sit in a damp splotchy cushion and make her skirt look like she lost bladder control

      7. They could use the money to clean or change the daybeds’ canvas covers where the sand and seawater stains are already beginning to show

      8. I’m one of a fast-growing group of people who are realising that while everyone’s checking out this hip new spot, we’re actually going to get much better seating and service back at KM8

Doh! It’s 2am and I’ve lost steam. If you have a few to add to get this list to 10, drop a note here.

Not been to CDM before and all the reviews on this place make me want to (in a very odd perverse sort of way) check the place out to see why everyone is saying the same thing about it

Don't know, hon. Last time I was there it was 3am and passed out on the daybed.

With a view like that (i.e. the girls) not sure why they don't want to get you lot more liquored up.
    • Pathetic Excuse for a restaurant

      Sep 22, 2009
This is one place that looks ok from outside, but please save your money for something better or charity

Service: Where do I start? The waiting staff are extremely rude, untrained, pathetic, uncoordinated, disoriented, lazy and unwelcoming.

We took a table for two, asked waiter politely if we could use the plug point for laptop. he says yes. An extremely rude waitress (thinking herself to be the queen of England) comes over and screams that we are not to use their electricity. So we call the manager and say this is not the way to talk because we have asked the waiter. He did not even apologise for the waitress and told us that we didn't ask the manager before using. So if you are ordering anything, or sitting anywhere make sure you let the manager know, or you might get rude waitresses coming towards you. After bringing the waiter to clarify that he had indeed let us use the plug point, none of them offered to apologize.

This is a pathetic excuse for a restaurant that makes you feel like they are doing you a favour by coming to their restaurant.

Food: The drinks are more water and less drinks. If you manage to get a taste out of it, consider yourself lucky.

Conclusion: If you want to learn how not to run a bar/restaurant, please go ahead, else this money is better donated to a worthier cause.

      1. Happy hour? No way!

        Jan 26, 2010
Went there with a friend in the afternoon as the bike rental shops weren't open for some reason which resulted in us drinking and it was not crowded. The staff appear unfriendly and service is slow. The music was over-the-top blasting loud, and guess what was playing. Taylor Swift's Love Story and a bunch of other teenybopper crap, when the 8 or so people were mostly tourists and my friend (whos not Singaporean but has lived here for awhile.)

It took the servers who were standing around talking among themselves to only serve us when we were frantically waving at them. We asked the server what was on happy hour and she said housepour spirits and beer. So we asked what brand of gin/vodka/ beer did they use and she said "housepour" again. Before asking her to find out, which she reluctantly did, and we ordered beer and vodka (1 for 1). Both beer and vodka came in plastic glasses, small ones for the vodka, and slightly taller/slimmer ones for beer. I kid you not. And the beer was not filled up to the brim, I'd say 3/4 glass. As for the vodka, it tasted like soda, you can't even taste the vodka at all! And the glasses were not filled to the top either.

I decided to change since I was wearing bermudas and had brought my board shorts along, and the staff insisted that I pay up before going to the toilet though my friend was there with our bags and we had just started to drink. Okay. Then my friend wanted to borrow the tanning beds and use the umbrella as he/she gets sunburnt easily and another waitress said "do it yourself, it's very heavy for me you know?" Yeah, I know my friend might be bigger in size than you, but for goodness sake, we're paying for service charge! We ordered another round after quickly downing our drinks, and this time, the gin/beer were less in quantity! 1 for 1, are you kidding me? It did not even taste like half a shot was used for each glass, I'd say half a shot combined for both of my gin glasses!

I could just buy that kiddy pop at 7-11 instead. We left after finishing up and again, the same waitress took forever to process the check and shoved it in my friend's face and they ran off with it instantly. Well, my friend was supposed to receive change but it seems that she assumed it was a tip cause my friend isn't Singaporean. Greedy person. He/she had to ask (again) for the change and the waitress said "I didn't know you wanted change." 4.75 to be exact. And she reluctantly gave it back, spilling the coins across the table.

        • Sensational on Sentosa

          Jan 7, 2010
Hey all you foodies ! I had read so many bad reviews about the Cafe Del Mar that I was very hesitant when my husband suggested it as a dinner destination on New Year's Day.

However, trusting his judgement more than that of netizens (no offence) I decided to give it a chance.

We called ahead for reservations for a table nearest the water but still on the verandah. When we got there however, we found that all such tables were occupied. However, we refused to allow this to ruin our evening and just ordered drinks, having accepted the staffs' reassurances that the next such table to become available will be ours. Sure enough, true to their word, we were reseated in about 15 minutes.

When we asked our waitress about the menu, she was quite well versed with it and made very good recommendations which we appreciated later. As a starter we ordered the Pimiento Shrimp which is basically sauteed shrimps on a bed of pimientos or small red peppers and salad. As mains, we ordered the Harissa Chicken and the Lamb chops. The chicken was wonderfully moist and well marinated and the lamb chops arrived exactly as we ordered them-medium and juicy !! We also found the side dishes rather unique in that the chicken was served with pears poached in red wine and a potato gratin accompanied the lamb.

The cocktails were not bad but do request less ice. We would recommend the Calimansi mojito and the Boston something-or-other ! Can't remember lah !

Anyway, we think that this little piece of heaven which is perfect for chilling out has been villified so much that we are writing this in order to give a fair, objective review to all of you out there who have never been here and have been put off from doing so by all the critical reviews.

In addition to all this, there are certain tables outside where you can bring your doggies. As the Mommy of two pups myself, I say "Yaaay"!!!

My humble advice is to go see for yourselves dudes and dudettes and hang loose at the Cafe Del Mar !

well I still remember the first time that i went here and i remember that i hated it but i must say they are getting better. I now go there every time in in Sentosa because they got nice music and view. they are at Siloso beach so they also have the beech and they have made full use of that. they have nice loungers out there for us who would like a tan :) and a umbrella for my girlfriend that doesn't like the sun that much. the drinks there are like a normal bar or club would have but they have some nice food though. they have nice side orders for the loungers at the beech and a great dinner menu for eating at their restaurant. they have now some nice new brown chairs that is just so nice to sit on. they have dinner there from 6 til they close and it is just marvelous to sit there and look at the beech and feel the wind as you can just sit and take it with ese there. but with all that yes it is kinda ex but well all sentosa is really when you think of it.

the buttom line its a nice place for a nice and relaxing time at sentosa if you like House music or Electro :)

            • Food ok but service.....

              Aug 12, 2009
I just got back from Cafe Del Mar and after reading all the bad comments, I was a little hesitant to go but decided to give it a chance.
Upon arriving there, nobody greeted us or even bothered to attend to us esp one guy who was at the indoor bar who was writing some reports and stuff. I mean at least have the courtesy to greet your customer.
Finally a young man attended to us and showed us to our table. Menus were given quickly. We ordered our drinks 1st and our waiter had only a small piece of crumpled paper to take our order on. I have lots of paper at home. I can always donate it to them if they want.
After awhile we knew what we wanted so we called our waiter again. Again he came with another scrap of paper to take our food orders. It was a good thing our orders were correct. We did ask for everything to be out whenever it was ready and to my surprise, apart from the calamari which came 1st, our soup and salad came after the main courses. Strange...
The calamari was nice and crisp on the outside but chewy and soft on the inside. Our request for extra mayo was not met. Next came the spaghetti champignon, Chermola cod and the Harissa chicken. The spaghetti was nice but just a little too creamy, the harissa chicken was a bit dry. It came on a bed of mash potatoes which was polished off quickly. :-) The cod fish was excellent. Nice and moist on the inside and a little crisp on the outside. Then the beef fillet arrive. It was done just right. The texture was good too.
When we had almost finished with the main courses, they then decided to send the soup and salad.
The soup was quite disappointing. It did not look like a mushroom cappucino as it was served in a huge bowl with some foam on top of it. It was also very bland. We tried to add some salt but the salt mill was damp and the salt kept getting stuck to it. We highlighted it to a waitress and she did try to clean it out but by then we had already finished the soup.
The nicoise salad was nothing like i ever had. There was not much tuna, quail eggs or even long beans. It seemed to consist of lots of mesclun and tomatoes.
The portions were just about right but when you are sharing with 5 other people, then it won't be enough so we ordered the lamb rack. It took 20mins before we got it and by then we had already placed our order for dessert so as not to waste time. All our plates had been cleared and the waitress promised to get us new cutlery and plates but it only arrived after the lamb and it was the wrong set up. They brought the cutlery and plates meant for dessert. Sigh....is there no communication?
Anyway the lamb was nicely done with no lamby smell or taste. It was served with a small piece of gratin and a little ratatouille. We finished that pretty quickly too. Afterall there were only 3 pieces. After the lamb, our desserts arrived.
The rum and raisin creme brulee and the pistachio cheesecake was just so so. Could not taste much rum or pistachio either. But their tiramisu was quite good. It was served with a scoop of walnut ice cream and had lots of fruit in it.
Overall the food was ok. Nothing fantastic but the drinks were disappointing. I had a lychee mojito and it was so light. It felt as if I had a virgin lychee mojito. :-( i would not be going there again anytime soon but maybe one day just to check out the crowd.

              • Too many chances

                Jul 30, 2009
I have been to Cafe Del Mar about 5 times...

The service has always been consistent. Consistently bad. The waiters never seem to pay attention to the customers. I always have to wave crazily before I can catch someone's attention, even if there is only a couple of people in the restaurant during a weekday.

Food wise, the standard has been inconsistent. Initially, the food was decent. Good considering that Cafe Del Mar has been positioned more as a club than a restaurant. However, they changed their menu and the food std has been going downwards. I tried the tomato based seafood linguine and it tasted like the cook mixed tomato puree with ketchup. It was horrible. The paella is not good as well. Dun bother to try it. The spaghetti champignon is ok. Sometimes it tastes good, sometimes horrible. Even the grilled prawn salad is inconsistent. If they cant even keep consistency in the salad, I don't know how they can maintain consistency in other food items.

As for dessert, the tiramisu is yummy. Really different. We tried the creme-brulee. It was cold inside and the top was kinda burnt. Quite disgusting...

Nett of it, if you are in the mood to take a gamble, go try Cafe Del Mar. Maybe you would be lucky and get some good food. Who knows, you may also catch some bikini babes and hunks on the beach too.

I've never been to the original Cafe Del Mar personally but I think this place give it a very bad name. Its a pretentious joint with untrained and rude service staff or perhaps they are trained to be rude? Everythin is overprice here and food is mediocre, so I wont bother. I dont know what one need to do to get the waiter attention here. There are heaps of other reviews everywhere about this place and I regret not listening to them.

The music sucks, its too loud. The whole place is pretty run down and I dont even dare sit on the stinky sun bed on the beach. I think they are trying to market this place for the pretty crowd or foreigners but fail miserably. Again, if you are pretty, why do you bother such a hideous place? There are shitloads of other pretentious place around in SG for you to hold that bubbly to look cool.

I realyl hope this place close down soon.

                    • Mojitoe Heaven.

                      Jun 9, 2009
All you fans of the drink Mojitoe, this is the place to get down and go tropical with it. I've visited Cafe DelMar about 5 times already and it's still the home to the best Mojitoes I have ever had.

Of course, don't let me forget they array of other poisons of choice as well. Their menu is plentiful and wide spread, everything from a bloody mary to a flaming lambou. They have it! I've tried Mojitoes, B52 shots and their chocolate martini, which was to say the least very chocolatey. You know how you expect these things to not taste as nice as you expect them to? This one surpassed it.

The mojitoe is a perfect balance of brown sugar, rum and soda with a bunch of mint leaves crushed to perfection on a bed of rocky ice. BEST!

I can't give you very objective criticisism on their food because I only get to enjoy their bar snacks late at night and its more often than not, always Fish and Chips. They come in strips of fish, around 5, and fries. Pretty darn satisfying when you're chilling by the beach.

The hype has really died down throughout the years and its less lively then it was before, may the novelty of of some famous Cafe from Brazil right here on our shores kinda wore off, especially when your paying this much for it.

After a recent first visit to your bar and restaurant on Sentosa Island two days ago, here are some of our observations that we believe will be of constructive use to the management of Cafe Del Mar.

To say the least, something needs to be done about the cleanliness and functionality of the whole place. The whole outdoor area is in a state of disarray and obviously poorly maintained. The pool water by the bar area is extremely murky and the experience is something that comes close to a visit to the Ganges River bank. Your beach chairs although in ample quantity do not even come equipped with mattresses and simply do not live up to the image that Cafe Del Mar has portrayed themselves to be. And no, I do not mean mattresses that you use for your outdoor beds because they are in a no better state compared to the rest of the outdoor area. Torn and tattered pieces of cloth hanging from the sides of the bed to me is plainly a matter of poor maintenance and a severe lack of attention to detail. It is a sign of disregard to bar patrons and is a severely jarring sight to witness, especially for beach goers who are here to have a fun and relaxing time in a nice and cosy environment. In this respect, only the indoor dining area is in a decent enough shape for visitors to sit back and enjoy.

The toilets like the rest of the outdoor area are also in need of a major overhaul and a good scrub. I am deeply, if not extremely, disappointed and shocked. As a customer with many choices on Sentosa Island, I certainly will look to other options when making future visits to the beach and certainly will not recommend this place to anyone who intends to have good CLEAN fun on the beach.
