Brunch with the puppies
Feb 13, 2009We met a bunch of friends for Sunday brunch here , and had a ok time. The staff are great, the setting outdoors was not bad ( frequently interupted by a posse of screaming kids who's parents did nothing).
However the dogs laying around made up for it nad provided amusement.
The eggs benedict were very average (hard in the middle) with iffy holandaise sauce and not to be recommended. The fresh sqeezed juices are great, it was a bit pricy but with everyone sinking bloody mary's etc it was bound to be, we will probably give it another shot here but I'm far from convinced.Must Tries

Epicuriosity satisfied
Apr 2, 2009We went here two days in a row for brunch: maybe I’m taking writing amateur food reviews too seriously or maybe I’ve run out of other options…
Epicurious gets pretty busy by eleven, mostly with expats. The first time we went, we rang and booked a table inside. Turns out that “booking” is rather a strong word for it – there was no table available inside apart from one end of an already occupied table. Now, call me an asocial old sod, but I don’t like eating, chatting with the missus and generally vegetating in the immediate company of strangers. It’s awkward for everyone involved – which is why newcomers to already-occupied tables always issue a faux-hearty “hello” to the current residents. So we said we’d eat outside instead. Having gone outside, we realized it was too hot so we said we’d go somewhere else. They then redirected us back inside where the occupants of the table in question were paying their bill. The punchline to this is that they then added a couple with their baby to the end of the table later. The baby had discovered a great new game called “bang the table really annoyingly”, a game so compelling that its witless parent even joined in... This, not uncoincidentally, was the moment we chose to pay the bill and go.
The second time we went, we were hoping to go somewhere else and in any case had seen where “booking” gets you, so we didn’t book. So we were happy to sit outside. Naturally, they chucked us on a shared table again. Since both we and all three other couples who sat at it while we were there spent a good proportion of our time looking for another table, the turnover and interruption with faux-hearty “hello”ing was quite high. In any case, it’s damn hot outside and feels uncompromisingly exposed even in the shade so – as it’s now closing into the “summer” season here – I probably won’t be heading back for quite a few months.
On the first occasion – possibly because we were right next to the kitchen – the service was pretty fast and efficient. On the second, we watched everyone who arrived after us getting their food while we waited for ours. It was only when the wife grabbed a waiter and demanded some feeding that our orders turned up.
The food (took me a while to reach the most relevant part, I know…) was pretty good. The burger is definitely good – and I say this having been burnt by the jet of superheated fat that came out of it when I took my first bite. The chips that come with it are frankly rubbish but the burger is the main show and it was good. The wife’s burrito was also good so no real complaints. The second visit, I had the croque monsieur which was up to the standards of the burger as well. It’s not especially authentic; in fact, it reminded me more a giant slice of Welsh rarebit topped with ham and then topped with another giant slice of Welsh rarebit. None of these are bad ingredients, however. It was very tasty and I ate all of it, resulting in much later complaining about how fat I was going to get. The missus had the smoked salmon eggs Benedict and was also happy.
So – good food, not especially expensive with only two quibbles: the abovementioned ropey chips and my second cup of coffee was a bit lukewarm. The only other objections are that it’s too hot for outside dining and that I hate other people so their tendency to make me sit next to complete strangers is a downer…Must Tries

Full Monty alert
Dec 10, 2007This place serves a great weekend breakfast fry-up.
The Epicurious Full Monty ($20) comes with 3 sunny-side up eggs, roast potato cubes with a good sprinkling of herbs (and garlic?), sausages, bacon, grilled tomato, baked beans, grilled mushrooms, buttered toast - basically, the works. The Full Monty set also comes with a glass of freshly squeezed OJ and a cup of freshly brewed coffee/tea.
A great place for a lazy breakfast as you take in the papers and the sights of the beeyotiful Robertson Walk longkang (or canal, as some might call it).
Seating used to be rather limited but now they've allowed patrons to sit in the wooden long benches/tables which are actually part of the Jap restaurant next door. Frequented by families with kids/dogs and couples living around the area.
Eversince the demise of Rivercafe, this is the next best thing to a lazy weekend breakfast spot for a perfect start to the day.Must Tries

Await no more!
Mar 17, 2010I was never an early riser so its great that their weekend breakfast/brunch is served till 1pm. After hearing and reading the raved reviews about this place, I finally gave it a try and boy did it live up to its reputation :)
Eggs Benedict - This was absolutely delish; definitely a must try. I especially loved their home fries which are basically sauteed potatoes seasoned with rosemary and probably salt and pepper.
Pancakes with maple syrup - These came with sliced strawberries and bananas and they were so light and fluffy!
Choco-nana sandwiches - I loved these as well but I may be biased because I've always been a fan of anything chocolatey. My companion found it a tad too sweet though.
Scrambled eggs with toast - One of the best scrambled eggs I ever had.
I've been there thrice; for breakfast and dinner and I much prefer their breakfast. Do try their signature Apple Crumble with vanilla ice-cream because its really good. For the more adventurous, check out their Lemon and Lime Tart, which is pretty good as well :)

Mediocre food topped off with a pinch of bad service
Mar 15, 2010Decided to do brunch here recently and came away disappointed at the whole experience.
It started out promisingly enough; the cafe's setup is basic but adequate, the service seemed competent, and the menu offered a wide range of options at reasonable prices. Some additional quirks like drinking water poured from vodka bottles added an offbeat touch.
Unfortunately, the food was mediocre at best, especially my breakfast burrito which was very soggy.
At the end of the meal, the person (who appeared to be the proprietor/manager of the cafe) who presented me with the bill was particularly rude and arrogant when I made an inquiry regarding the use of the White Card. A complete lack of tact and/or manners.
To be fair, the rest of the wait staff were fine but I'm definitely never going back here again.

coming of age
Dec 5, 2009Why the title ? It just felt like that because I remember my first introduction to Epicurious a long long time ago.
It was an email from an ex-colleague who has fine taste buds & even finer cooking skills herself. So I decided to check out this cafe since she mentioned that it was recently opended by some friends. And she was right - the food was good. But the whole feel then was like a teen - young, with huge potential but unsure.
Due to my travels & location of work, I did not venture there that often over the years until my recent breakfast / brunch hunt. In the past, you would have been able to sit at only a few tables in the cafe. Now - what was charming was that you could select to sit at one of the eclectic collection of tables & chairs arranged under the trees, a stone's throw away from the river or under the fans outside the cafe.
The food too seemed to have matured. Compared to some of the other eateries around it, the food was well presented, unpretentious, homey with a gourmet touch e.g. eggs benedict. This is like The Dish at all upmarket cafes right ? But here there was that something special in the taste. And so it was with the other stuff we tried like the mexican inspired wrap.
That something special & charm is what I hope will get even better the next time I get to visit.I also recommend this place for

Average only....
Oct 7, 2009Firstly,the food is just average, it juz reminds you of those mid range cafe/bistro! Pretty pricy for such standard of food.
I tried the Tapas menu ,very small portioned and it doesn't taste fresh, especialy the spicy chicken wing,it jus have a frozen food feel to it. The bacon n chic roll was hard!!
Desert was better,at least I hope! Had chocolate cake and their signature apple crumble! Was nice, but the crumble is slightly overly sweet for me.
The best I tasted was the French toast!! It was great! Everything was just right! U can drizzle mapple syrup over it too!
Another thing I like about the shop is the use of vintage plates and tea cups! It's very cute!I also recommend this place for

ho-hum
Oct 7, 2009hmmm. i had really high hopes for this place given that i saw some reviewer's awesome pics of the breakfast. also, the over-enthusiastic wait staff gave me the idea that they do take pride in their food.
maybe it was the wrong day or something, but they served me the wrong food (baked eggs w mushrooms instead of ham, and its button mushrooms sumore!), and the baked eggs were quite horrid. maybe baked eggs are like that, i dont know, it's my first. by noon they ran out of more popular items like eggs ben, pancakes and also their side of potato w herbs.
another thing to note, if u are looking for a nice chill place for wkend brunch, this is not the place. it's crowded, rowdy and HOT. most of the seats are outdoors, so be warned if u are planning to go in sgp's usually-hot weather. i dont think there's booking too, so you have to be there early!Spent about

It's..better than Jack's Place Executive Lunch?
Sep 13, 2009While combing through the veritable jungle of restaurants in the Robertson Quay area, my dining partner and I landed in Epicurious. We were REALLY trying to find Brasserie Wolf (which proved annoyingly difficult to find until we realized it was actually right next to where we parked the car), but after half an hour of wandering, we settled for the charming little eatery.
It was virtually empty on a Sunday night, perhaps an ominous warning of what was to come but we were too stupid and too hungry to make good decisions. We both decided on the grilled meats which come with any 1 side and sauce of your choice. My rib eye with Red wine sauce was pleasant, but I wouldn't say it's anything worth shouting about. What was surprisingly yucky though was the side of couscous I ordered. Bland and tasteless, I resorted to picking out and eating the few pine nuts and raisins for some semblance of flavor. And I don't even like raisins. But you know.. whatever works.
My friend had the filet mignon (medium-rare) which looked like it was sliced right off the cow. I'm no meat connoisseur so I hesitate to comment, but apparently the centre of the slab was still cold. I'm assuming that's probably not right.
In all, Epicurious is a rather average place. It's not horrifyingly bad but I wouldn't be itching to pay them another visit anytime soon. And thanks to White Card, the damage wasn't so bad in the end.Spent about

Yummy breakfast
Aug 2, 2009Went there with 2 friends for breakfast before the morning crowd. Liked the table and chair design. The cold water was served in a vodka bottle - good one. I ordered the egg benedict ($12). No experience with this item before but my first impression is definitely a good one. The eggs were cooked pretty well and the hams were tasty. I liked the potatoes (garnished with fragrant spices) which was served as a side dish. My friends ordered Green Eggs and Ham ($12), Pancakes ($6 maybe?) and Choco-nana sandwich ($6 maybe?). They seemed to enjoy their meal a lot.
Servers were friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. Not to forget, the colourful bridge (Akaff?) was an interesting sight to behold.Must Tries

A NOT so Epicurious Experience
Jun 25, 2009Wanted to have leisure breakfast and found this place on the internet. Thought their breakfast selection looked “comforting” enough so decided to give it a shot. When I got there, the ideal alfresco seats (shaded) were mainly occupied. The sweltering heat had been pretty unbearable lately so decided to opt for a seat inside the tiny eatery but the place stank of kitchen fumes so I looked around for other possible alfresco seats available. There were a few empty tables so we asked if we could sit on one of them. As there were only 2 of us, the service staff refused to sit us at the available tables (meant for 4 pax) and pointed to a table which obviously would be uncomfortable as it had direct sun exposure. I then asked to sit at the table for 4 since it was pretty much in-between hours; the breakfast crowd would be finishing up and the lunch crowd wouldn’t be in till an hour or two. By then, we would already have filled our tummies and left. They were unwilling to offer us the table, although there were 3 of such empty tables around. Being a strong advocate that good food should always be complemented by overall good experience, my partner and I decided that we will patronize the place down the road instead. Although the breakfast menu had enticed me to visit the place, my unpleasant encounter at this place was a determinant factor that I will not recommend it to anybody. It is apparent that the service staff were not customer-oriented and obviously inflexible. On hindsight, it made me wonder if they would have reacted differently to our request if we were Caucasians……they certainly looked like they were pro-Caucasians. Such establishments should start to realise that at the end of the day, MONEY is only in one colour and speaks only one language. -
Singapore breakfast staple
Jun 6, 2009We had heard this was a Singapore breakfast staple....very popular and around for a long time.
While my partner's dish was great. I had to send my fried eggs back 2x!! I wanted them well done (not runny). The first time they arrived black and burnt (I honestly still cannot believed they served them to me - and with a smile no less!) And then the second time they were runny. It was beyond annoying as my partner had been finished with his meal for a quite a white before I could even get started on mine.
I was really dissapointed. I am looking for a great casual neighboorhood-y breakfast place and I was hoping this would be the one. Given its longevity and popularity, I may just give it another try in hopes that they were having an off day.

Frozen beef cubes....???
May 26, 2009Had dinner there recently and the experience was half pleasant and half disappointing. We had crab cakes, ham and chorizo as starters. The crab cakes were very dry outside and somewhat flaky inside - not the sort of density that you would look for in a crab cake. Ham was alright - tasted somewhat like the cheap supermarket type and the chorizo looks more like the chinese sausage. However, the greek salad was good, very fresh and the dressing was just right.
We ordered the French style beef stew....it didn't look nice at all. It's watery and looks like it's water blend in with a beef juice. Didn't look appealing at all. The beef stew looks like frozen beef cubes thawed and recooked. It's so dry and tasteless...worst beef stew I ever had!
We finished with an apple crumble which was good as unlike some other with heavy sauce with the apple this one tastes crisp and clean. A nice change.I also recommend this place for
