Try it at your own risk
Sep 1, 2009Well we were pretty excited when IL Lido first opened here in Suntec and couldn't wait to try it out. So we were really looking forward to our lunch but what we got was the total opposite of what we expected.
Here's what my table of 5 ordered:
Minestrone soup - A concoction of ONLY frozen peas + carrots + corn with a tasteless tomato (if there is) soup base.
Chicken soup - An uninviting mixture of chicken mashes + peas (AGAIN). Chicken stock in clear water does a better job than it.
Mushroom soup - A tat bland but is the only decent soup available.
Cabonara pasta - Very plain with FEW bits of bacon sprinkled over.
Mac & cheese pasta - Really just macaroni and cheese. Dont expect anything else.
Clams Aglio pasta - Clams were not properly cooked resulting in it being smelly.
Italian club sandwich - Decent. The only 'saving grace' of the table.
Warm water servings - The waiter managed to spill all 5 glasses of water on the table. BRAVO.
My ratings:
Food = 1 : Lousy soups, less than desirable pastas
Ambience = 2 : Exactly as named - Cafeteria
Value = 0.5 : For $12 each I could get much better food from pasta mania. (Yes its THAT comparable)
Service = 1 : For spilling waters, not knowing which table to serve the food to and not knowing what is the food served, i think 1 is a pretty generous scoring.
Conclusion:
Please bring NYDC back.

speechless about the place.. spend the money elsewhere
Sep 7, 2009Food was served quite slowly even when the restaurant wasn't very packed. The food is average. We ordered 1 pasta, 1 4 cheese pizza, pork chops, roast beef, chicken dish. Part of the roast beef is raw.
Waiters did not seem to be clear of the daily special. One waiter told us there was a special pasta of the day. Next waiter who came to serve us said there wasn't any.
After our dinner, before we finished our drinks, the waiter asked if we wanted to order dessert. We declined the dessert option and 1 min later, the bill was thrown on our table. We thought, there was a slight queue outside the restaurant and so, we decided not to hold up the tables and proceeded to pay. Upon settling the bill, we realised they did not give us a 15% discount which was advertised in the TODAY paper. One waiter said he'll check and he took the credit card back to the cashier. He came back and said that the cashier will reverse out the discount for us.
After a long time, we asked if the bill was ready. That same waiter said, it'll take a while. Then he repeatedly said that we as customers should let them know that there is such a discount before we pay so that the restaurant can give us the discount accordingly. He said it not once, not twice but three times. By that time we were really very angry, because his tone indicated that its our fault for not letting them know about the discount!
It was a bad experience with mediocre food. We will definitely not go back there again. -
? Food + Poor Service = 2 Ex-Customers
Sep 1, 2009First off, they were unaware of a promotion for UOB Cardmembers, and insisted that we had misread the UOB website. So they decided to check with the HR Manager (if he even exists), in a room in the back. After around 10 minutes, one of the staff came out with a printout in his hand, presumably from the UOB website. He gave the curt excuse of "the management did not tell us" and "we only opened last week".
Ordered Lasagne, Mushroom Chicken, Garlic Long Beans, Chicken Consome, a Latte and a Soyachino.
No comment about the drinks.
The Garlic Long Beans was ordered in an attempt to get my daily dose of vegetables. Word of advice, don't try it. The garlic was overpowering, and so was the olive oil. Half of the beans were undercooked, while the other half was over cooked.
The missus had the lasagne, which was rather chewy, and tasteless in my opinion.
The Mushroom Chicken and Chicken Consome arrived after 2 unsuccessful attempts to get the attention of a "service" staff, most of whom were crowding behind the counter chatting amongst themselves, while some were "busy" laying out cutlery.
Now get this, there were only 2 customers in the entire establishment. Me and the missus. And it takes almost an hour to prepare a Mushroom Chicken and a Chicken Consome.
I was beginning to wonder if the chicken responsible for laying the egg that would hatch into the chicken that was to be slaughtered for my meal had been hatched itself yet.
Well, the Mushroom Chicken was a plate of 3 pieces of pathetic looking chicken fillet lying on a bed of mixed vegetables (read: peas, carrots, maize), over-seasoned with mixed herbs and nothing else. There was hardly any taste to mention of, other than the herbs.
The Chicken Consome resembled oily water with peas and lumps of chicken. And it tasted exactly like that.
But what killed the entire experience was probably the attitude of the "service" staff. Note the quotation marks, as I am still unsure if what we got there was "service".
Normally I don't mind bad food if the service is reasonable.
Unfortunately, paying for the service charge here is not justifiable.
The food may be affordable ($5.90 for the Mushroom Chicken etc.), but scores little or no marks for taste and presentation.
Try it at your own risk, it may be that my tastes and expectations are a tad high, but having worked in the F&B industry before, this place fails miserably.Spent about

An interesting option
Feb 11, 2010The place is clean and spacious...
The service would be...um...unobtrusive?
But unless they(the place, the people) do terrible things to me i tend to just go places for the food.
And generally when i get pasta, other than the pasta and the sauce, i don't bother what else they add to the dish - i think its not essential. Even if you plonked a lobster on top of the pasta, what makes the sauce alfredo is still the parmesan and the butter, not the lobster on top.
So on this count, this place serves a passable carbonara. Other places that serve $10-15 carbonara produce a white sauce that seems to be mainly cream. here, at least it tastes like cheese(mainly parmesan, it seems to me) and egg. And the spaghetti is alright too.
The pizzas are thin and acceptably crispy. Very light. their 4 cheese (quattro formaggi?) is ok. The smoked duck thing too. Could do with quattro stagioni or a parma ham pizza on their menu...
Anyway, i think this place is a good complement to creation cafe thats just across the road(nicholl highway) at shaw towers. There you can get unadultered pine nut oil pesto for a reasonable price, but their menu is full of new fangled imaginations like spicy crab or laksa pasta. il lido, it seems to me, serves as a good counterpoint to that - their menu has a few more of the obscure pastas/dumplings with weird names...
I mean, seriously, where else can you find gnocchi(though the strength of the sauce has been heavily toned down for unwary local palates)? and for a mere $12.50(i think you have to add $2-3 at creation cafe to swap your pasta with ravioli)?
However, the drinks/desserts are far less economical than the food. I think the panna cotta was $6-7? Though it tasted just fine, i think the food is far better value...
the next italian place i should be trying out should be the trattoria thing at 313... -

Feb 11, 2010went here to have the farewell dinner with colleagues. the food was simply marvelous...bravo!!
we ordered :
- today's special : Spagetti (served with white sauce) and Pork Loin (served with onions, mashed potatoes and salad)
- 4 Cheese Pizza (Thin Crust Pizza with Tomato, Mozzarella, Mascarpone, Parmesean and Cheddar)
- Chicken Cacciatora (Chicken leg stewed with vegetables and served with mashed potatoes/french fries)
- Deep Fried Whitebait served with Roasted Lemon and Tartar Sauce
- Gnocchi (Homemade potato dumplings with mushroom, garlic and basil cream)
- Polpettone (beef meatloaf with spinach and cheese, served with mashed potatoes and tomato sauce)
- Desserts: Fig Pie and Pannacota
the surroundings look 'empty'...not much patrons...the service...when you need a server..they are not there...when you don't need one...few were standing at the back.
anyway, it's not about the service. i think overall...the food is pretty decent not as bad as the previous reviewers described. if you like cheese, the 4 cheese pizza is ideal.
if you are UOB credit card holder, entitled for 15% on the menu.Must Tries

What’s with OILY food theme?
Dec 6, 2009This is the 1st time I'm giving such a low rating. Prices are cheap, no doubt. But quality is seriously compromised! I wonder why Wong Ah Yoke (from Straits Times) gave a 3/5.. He must have been to the cafe on a good day.
Deep-fried Whitebait ($9.90++): Extremely crispy and crunchy but I suspect the ratio of batter to fish was probably 10:1. And it was oily. Not worth it!
I have no idea what possessed me to order the Soft Shell Crab ($9.90++) in a supposedly Italian cafe. Must be a moment of irrationality. On 1st sight, all those droplets of oil turned me off immediately. Even an amateur chef would know not to serve deep fried food that’s not well-drained!
The Clams Aglio & Olio ($8.90++) was just very average.
Salmon Escallops ($12.90++) is just a fancy name for 2 generous pieces of salmon fillets served with ratatouille. The latter was good but the former was overcooked. And it sat on a pool of puke-green pesto oil which didn’t look the least bit appetising.
I wonder how long the business can be sustained if they don’t start churning out some better looking AND tasting food soon.
Time for some serious damage control, please.

Tastes like instant pasta
Nov 21, 2009I've eaten here twice.
First time wasn't too bad. Service was prompt and friendly. We ordered the mac and cheese and spaghetti with meatballs.. My fiance enjoyed the mac n cheese, which i found very average. My spaghetti with meatballs was also pretty bland, tasted like Prego canned sauce to me. We ordered a side of scrambled eggs (they have an all day breakfast). Eggs were very tasty and we were quite impressed (we love eggs). UOB had a 1 for 1 promotion on the main course upon order of beverage so it was pretty worthwhile for us.
Second visit today was a disappointment. They got our orders wrong three times - kept sending us dishes we hadn't ordered. We had a mushroom soup to share, terribly disappointing and tasteless, like how another reviewer commented. I had the carbonara today, which tasted like instant pasta. Sauce was hardly creamy and instead had a very salty, MSG-like taste to it. Fiance had the mac and cheese again, so he must have found it good enough the first time. We ordered the scrambled egg again (such egg fanatics we are) and it was consistently good from the first time. The bill took almost 15 minutes to arrive, despite the place being quite empty by the time lunch was over for us.
On the whole the second visit was very disappointing. I doubt i will eat here again.I also recommend this place for

???
Nov 6, 2009Despite the lack of positive reviews, I decided to give this place a shot to see if perhaps some of the reviews might have been too harsh.
A simple cafe setting at Suntec, I started out with the Calamari ($7.90) which had generous portions of fresh squid fried in a nice crispy batter. So far so good.
Then came the Cream of Mushroom Soup ($3.90) which was really tasteless. Did not touch it after a a few mouthfuls and the staff just cleared it without even asking why.
My main course was the Creamy Salmon Spaghetti ($9.90) which despite having a large amount of oil dumped in, was also rather tasteless.
I then tried some of the Minute Steak with Fries ($12.90). Now at least this steak which was marinated with some herbs had some a nice sour finish to the medium done meat patty. The fries was also done well, with a nice crisp on the outsides and a pleasant warm mushiness with every bite.
Overall though, while prices were very reasonable, the food did not impressed me enough to convince me to return.Spent about

It's a waste
Oct 24, 2009I've read bad reviews about this place but decided to try maybe it's not as bad, as it is still under Il Lido. We went there for a weekend dinner, 15% off with UOB! My hubby and I ordered a four cheese pizza and we requested for additional ham which we were informed there would be 2 dollars additional. We also ordered Scallopine Mushroom (sounds enticing). In less than 10 mins, our Scallopine came out. The first bite, it's not warm. We ask for the dish to be returned to the kitchen, this time it's more than 10 mins of waiting and i got the same food (i can see the cut meat). I tried again. The mushrooms are warm but the meat and the sauce is still cold. Usually, when you return your food, they bother to do it nicely, this one, no effort at all. Pizza is just so-so (would not pass as four cheese). When we got our bill, the extra toppings is 3 dollars not 2 dollars. What a service! I conclude that this place ruined Il Lido's reputation. Even with 1 for 1 or 15% off, it's still not worth eating here.I also recommend this place for

Pasta still not bad, but skip the desserts and the beef
Oct 24, 2009Ok i've eaten here twice.
First time my group has the clams aglio olio which was good and the 4 cheese pizza which was just ok. Nice thin crust but nothing to shout about. We got dessert, which included some pannacotta thingy which was forgettable and a tiramisu which was equally disappointing. So overall the main dishes were not bad but desserts were mediocre.
And it seems to me that the price of the food has been increasing ever since it got featured on the Sunday times.
The second time i went i felt that not only was it pricier, the quality of the food had dropped. The second time around, the clams aglio olio was still not bad and the baked pasta was ok. However i made the terrible mistake of ordering Roast Beef which at 11 bucks was an utter letdown. Although the roast beef came in generous portions, the meat was tough and bland. It really felt like chomping on rubber and was an utterly disappointing meal. The last dish we ordered was ham and mushroom pizza which was not bad but again not particularly noteworthy.
Overall, i feel that the pasta selection is still not bad, and the pizza choices are dependable, albeit unremarkable. However, the roast beef was an utter disaster and the desserts disappoint. Service is generally ok. Was disappointed by the increasing prices and the second visit was notably worse then the first.Spent about

Very disappointing.
Oct 5, 2009I guess it was a mistake not to have read through the reviews on HGW about this place before checking it out during the past weekend. I did recall the favourable review from the Sunday Times and assumed it was worth a visit.
Service levels probably improved recently, as we had no real issues being greeted promptly and seated. However, I felt the food quality was a real letdown. The minestrone soup was darker in colour than usually expected. It was moderately tasty until I started detecting an increasing level of sodium and then gave up finishing the portion. Being a big fan of the basic spaghetti bolognaise, the cafe's version was the blandest I've tasted to date. We also ordered the tomato bruschetta (ok, not great) and the pizza margherita. The pizza crust was probably too thin as we noticed within a couple of minutes, the cheese and oil somewhat soaked through the crust and made the dish look unappetising (again we were guilty of wasting more food; thank goodness we didn't order dessert).
One of the servers was concerned with the amount of leftover food at our table and asked us politely if there were any problems. I gave my honest feedback. We left for the neighbouring Food Republic to replenish our still-growling stomachs with tastier and cheaper food.
I doubt I will be returning nor recommending this place until the food quality improves.Spent about

Go to Cafeteria when you're not hungry!
Sep 30, 2009My friends and I was at Suntec looking for a place for dinner and we spotted Cafeteria. As we were looking for an affordable place to dine at, we decided on Cafeteria since it's considered cheap.
We waited for some while for seats since it's full house. I have no complaints for that until we stepped in. After deciding on our orders, it actually took a while to catch the attention of a staff. It seemed that there's not enough staffs to handle the friday night crowd.
Oh well, probably it's newly opened, so well, ordered 3 iced water with our main course. and 3 cups of iced water needed 20 mins to be served. -______-
So we were there chatting and chatting, until the staff came out with a dish which we did not ordered. Thinking that ours will come soon.... we continued with our conversation until 1 of them complained gastric pain, then we realised an hour plus have passed since we ordered our food.
The attention of the busy waiters are still very difficult to catch, and took some little while till 1 of them came over and said they will go to the kitchen to check our orders. Then, there was no replies from them. Another friend decided to ask another waiter. Then they said they are preparing your orders now.
Next, we overheard a waiter going to the table next to us and ask wad did they order after serving them 1 main course. Next was that they served a cold soup to them. At least they changed the soup for them.
The food was finally served. It taste good, not really that fantastic of cos. Probably because we were dying of hunger.
I personally ordered Mac n Cheese where i get sick of the taste at the end.
Nothing special, probably just the price which looks great.
And why I said go there when you're not hungry? Because you'll wait till you become hungry.I also recommend this place for
