  1. A Sweet Place (again with the terribly lame titles!)

    Apr 4, 2009
Caramel is located in the building I'm interning at, so sadly, if you were to walk past the building, you probably won't notice it from the outside. The whole building is so blah, so I'm not surprised.

However, if you do manage to find this gem, goody on you! It's to die for. Parts quaint, eclectic, chic and homey, the decor is almost paradoxical. But it works! Tall windows, mismatched furniture and cutlery, bright yellow walls - you can feel your mood instantly brighten as you step in.

Service was lovely too. With the menu changing everyday, they had no printed menus to distribute. Instead, the day's menu was written on a relatively small board near the counter. My fellow intern and I were sitting further in, so instead of asking us to go to the board, the waiter (I believe he's one of the owners. How owners and servers treat you are very very different most of the time!) recited the menu flawlessly (consisting of ten items) to us.

Yes, ten items might not seem like a whole lot, but it only consisted of the mains. They have a drinks menu, and a plenitude of the cutest desserts. Adorable cupcakes and creme brulee! That's all I remember actually, though, I do remember there being much more.

Anyhow, fellow intern ordered a bacon and potato spaghetti olio aglio, and I order a smoked salmon salad with pesto. Each main costs $8.50. The portions were reasonable, though I doubt it would really satisfy anyone really hungry, i.e. a man. I was well sated, however.

They also serve a complimentary cup of hot lemongrass tea. Very tasty. I absolutely love how all their teacups, plates etc. are all different! It's so LOVELY I feel like squealing.

Oh, I probably should have mentioned this in the front, but Caramel Cafe is joint with Hairloom Salon. They actually take up the same space, but are separated well. Hairloom is the opposite of Caramel, in that it is more of a stark chic with concrete floors. Don't worry, I found the concept odd when I first heard about it, but somehow, the whole place just WORKS.

While paying the bill (no service charge, how much more awesome can a place get?!), I couldn't resist a creme brulee. So I got one to go, and then left it in the office fridge for later. It was blowtorched right in front of me. Heh, I just found that cool.

Anyhow, the place is open from noon to eight on Mondays to Thursday, and noon to ten Fridays and Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays.

You can check out their blog for more info: hairloomandcaramel.blogspot.com

They have pictures of cupcakes! Too adorable.

To sum up a really messy review, this place is a must-try (wah, I sound SO singaporean). In fact, I'm going back tomorrow! :D

    • Cupcakes that take the cake

      Apr 1, 2009
Hairloom and Caramel is a pretty, bright, light and whimsical cafe located in the rather incongruous and slightly grotty Shaw Towers. Having seen pictures of their delicate cupcakes on their blog, I simply had to try them in my search for the island's best cupcakes.

The strawberry cream cheese cupcake comprises a vanilla cupcake topped with strawberry flavoured cream cheese frosting. I liked the buttery, fragrant vanilla flavour and the denser cake texture as opposed to a lighter sponge. The frosting was light and slightly grainy, with just the right balance of sour and sweet. This one was a real treat and favourite among my colleagues for its homemade, simple flavours.

The carrot cupcake was also outstanding, with its generous rough slivers of grated carrot and a beautiful cinnamon-y fragrance and moist, crumbly interior. A definite must try for all carrot cake lovers!

And for fans of salted caramel, you will love the chocolate caramel which is a dense vanilla cupcake topped with a layer of salted caramel followed by a layer of rich, slightly dark chocolate. Sweet, salty, sticky, this is one rich and unique tasting cupcake that will linger on your palate's memory...

While I was there, they had also just baked a fresh batch of bread and butter pudding which looked deliciously enticing. If the cupcakes are anything to go by, the rest of the menu is certainly worth a try.

For now, Hairloom and Caramel's cupcakes take the cake!

Thks for the reviews. I finally came here, for the cupcakes? or desserts? Yeah, i would always want to try out new establishments.
Bascially this is a cafe cum hairloom where u can style ur hair n den have a cuppa coffee, light meals and desserts. gOOD PLACE TO CHILL OUT.
I came here on a fri afternoon(they r closing on the 9th to - unsure of the date). They are several cute mini little cupcakes on display n some desserts such as creme brulee and tiramisu. I had no idea of wad to buy as they r jus too many choices. The friendly guy recommended me the tiramisu but i was not interested as i have high expectations of a good tiramisu thus he choose the chocolate walnut tart. Again, im not into anything nutty. But, he suggested picking out every single walnuts on top of the tart for me n dizzle caramel sauce instead. OMG, that's great. I appreciate that.

The chocolate walnut tart has no walnut now but drizzed with caramel sauce. It taste delicious when u microwave it where the caramel sauce would flow and when u eat it with the choc itself, it's yummy.
I may b back to try out the cupcakes when they have reopened their cafe.

    1. Sweets for my tooth

      Sep 23, 2009
      blog: http://yummyjunkies.blogspot.com/2009/09/caramel-cafe-toms-palette.html

Banana Chocolate cake with scoop of Vanilla Ice-cream
      - Choc & Banana is 1 of the great combination of flavours that the market is introducing and growing big on. The Banana Choc cake over here is done very well.
With the cake being moist and the banana melts in your mouth but not being too heavy or wet on the cake. Vanilla ice-cream gives a temporary wipe from the boastful flavour and creating a desire and lust for that sinful choc

      Strawberry Shortcake
      - not a fan of it. Gives discredit to strawberry shortcakes.
nothing commendable about this. In fact, it is a waste of bucks for anyone purchasing it.

Dark chocolate with Himalayan Pink Salt
      - This gets the thumbs up and Yumz from me. Interesting is the word that rings in my mind. Savory follows suit on the next thought of it.
Yet another great combination out in the market of combining chocolate with salt.
But they do it well over here, im normally not a fan of Sweet+Salted taste in 1, however this gets the green light from me. It may be the salt they use. Unlike seasalt, this has a subtle tinge of saltiness and is really fine in texture. It rolls the flavour of tinge saltiness and bittersweet chocolate into 1. Nice!

      Cream Cheese Carrot Cake
      - Carrot cakes are my number 1 love for cakes. I would Not say the 1 here is Ubber Fantastic, but it is good enough to meet my expectations.

What better place to jump into a Whimsical land with the company of Sweets for my tooth?
Great place to hang out for a Lazy afternoon and chat with friends.

not recommended for a huge group though as seats are limited.
But a 4 man gang will fit in snugly.

I like the caramel brownie there!
    2. Limited and rather disappointing food menu

      Aug 10, 2009
It'd been a while since I ventured into new places. A friend suggested lunch at Caramel and I thought why not. The problem was that I went in through Shaw Towers. Took me a while to find that the entrance was (get this) through a hair salon. Of course it was only after that I realised the real entrance was through the main road.

The place was set up well. Loads of different styles blended together really nicely. My friend had the sandwich but didn't make any comments. My unagi pasta in wafu sauce was a big disappointment. It was overly salty, overly oily and there were but a few scraps of unagi.

The drink was interesting though. I had the vitagen something. Can't remember the name but it was the only vitagen thing on the menu. Interesting taste and innovative.

The menu was rather limited and the nice decor isn't enough to draw me back. So sorry, Caramel, I won't be returning.

      • About cupcakes

        Jul 20, 2009
Today is Monday, and I thought it would be nice to talk about something sweet.

Okay, I lied. Today is Monday, and I thought it would be even nicer to eat something sweet. Anything sweet, I have a sweet tooth but I don’t know how to control it. Sometimes, I think about desserts, okay, that’s another lie - they are in my thoughts ALL THE TIME! I believe it’s a case of lack-of-desserts-complication, otherwise why will I always be thinking about them?

If you can focus your attention on the cupcake up there, the very plain-looking chocolate one; it’s nothing spectacular, no pretty frosting, no fanciful names - just Chocolate caramel ($3.90). And beneath the glossy layer of chocolate, there’s a thin layer of caramel, and cake of course. Chocolate and caramel taste very good together, but I’ll prefer the cake to be more moist.

With a burn of the blowtorch, the caramelized sugar was beautiful, golden-brown in colour. I could hear the crack sound as I dipped into the surface, my, I love the combination of the slightly hard, caramelised sugar with the soft custard. The Creme Brulee ($4.50) is an ideal dessert; it’s not too heavy, just something sweet for you to end the meal with. If I’m the one holding the blowtorch, I will probably burnt it a little longer, to give it the really-golden-brown colour. But no complains, I scrapped off the edges of the cup, to get every last bit of the custard into my mouth.

Initially, there was a matcha cake in the midst of baking, so we decided to wait for it since we’re going to hang out there. But after a while, they informed us that the matcha cake was too dry so they wasn’t selling it. We went for the bread pudding ($5.9 with scoop of ice cream) instead, and boy, we were glad we did. The tickling of the cool ice cream on the warm bread pudding, it was heavenly! And the very-generous-scoop of ice cream added ice cream points too!

Whimsical will be the perfect word to describe Hairloom & Caramel. The creative combination of a hair salon with a cafe selling home-made food - I love fun places like this, they just make me feel so much happier when I stepped in. I have a feeling you will see me back here, so for that, See you there!

You are always welcome to visit ladyironchef for a full-up on this trip. Whatever written herein are my genuine feelings expressed in words. Food, my dear, is what they call an adventure!

        May 9, 2009
I saw the tag '' Reserved'' under the cheesecake n was disppointed. It was reserved by somebody. There was chocolate banana cake however i hate bananas! Therefore, it was out. I have left with the cupcakes.

The cupcakes here have different toppings but all of butter sponge. I actually like the caramel taste but do not like butter sponge!
It was contained in a coffee cup to go. Kinda interesting.

The brownie with himalaya salt($3.50). It looks exactly the same as the chocolate caramel, served in a cupcake form with dark chocolate. It was recommended by them as they told me one of their customer love it so much that he actually ordered a plain brownie as a birthday cake. The brownie taste interesting with a saltish flavour to it. The brownie was sweet but yet a little salty. You must enjoy it slowly in order to understand the reason why they sprink himalaya salt on top.
