There's more than just Bak Chor Mee here
09 Jul 2010Everyone comes to Bedok North Blk 85 for the famous Bak Chor Mee. While there is nothing wrong with this—the Bak Chor Mee is indeed wonderful—there are certainly other good stalls here to check out, like Chai Chee Pork Porridge. I ordered the Century Egg Congee and was pleasantly surprised with it. When served, you can smell the faint aroma of sesame oil wafting from the congee. It is smooth and easy to eat, with the right texture and consistency, which is maintained throughout the bowl all the way till the end instead of becoming watery like congee from lesser stalls. While the century egg and pork meat were delicious, the taste of the ingredients did not overpower the taste of the porridge, allowing me to savour both components of the bowl. If you've never tried anything else here other than the Bak Chor Mee, the next time give that a miss and have some congee instead!
Lots of meat!
29 Jun 2010This seems to be a very popular stall - so much so that they forgot my order and I had to re-order. Anyway, my bak chor porridge came with a generous serving of meat and dough fritter, adding lots of texture and flavour to the dish. The minced pork was also in perfect bite-sized portions so I didn't have to mash them up to ensure the insides weren't undercooked. My only grouse is that the pork is too salty for my taste, while the porridge is a little bland - I prefer the two to be more balanced. Although the porridge looked a little watery, it actually had a nice consistency and made for rather satisfying slurping. It successfully satisfied my craving for pork porridge!
