Average food, economical price

Service:
The service was pretty good. From the moment we got off a cab, the staff was promptly present to bring us to a table. The "uncle" taking our orders was also very friendly, always smiling. He wasn't pushy or biased towards promoting the expensive items on the menu. He even helped us order the satay even though it was from a different stall. Overall happy with the service.

Food:
As there's only 3 of us, we ordered only a few dishes; namely, the BBQ stingray, oatmeal prawn, vege and satay. Most of the other tables order the steamboat. So that's probably their signature dish.

Anyway, the stingray was so-so. Although its suppose to be BBQ, the meat taste watery, as if it was just taken out of the freezer and onto the hotplate. Chili wasn't too great either.

The prawn was also average. The meat tasted slightly plain and pasty ("mi-mi" in Hokkien). But the oatmeal was delicious! Probably the saving-grace of the dish.

The satay was disappointing. After reading the previous review, I was looking forward to trying out the pork satay. As it turns out, the meat was tough and the fats was not crispy. The sauce wasn't too bad with the pineapple puree but it could have been better if it had more peanuts in it.

Price:
Ok lah. Not very expensive, not very cheap. Normal lor.

Surprise Find

Cheng's Seafood Village Nan San Village BBQ Satay The spread we ordered

It is always nice to find a good tze char stall. One that my family recently found was Cheng's Seafood Village in our neighbourhood. The place serves up pretty fresh seafood. The claypot fish-head and fish steamboat are one of the best I have tasted. The claypot sea cucumber also deserves an honourable mention for the generous amounts of ingredients used. And there seems to be something about the yam (or taro) that they use in their dishes that makes it really special. Exceptionally fragrant.

The satay there is also a surprising find. It's run by a Chinese. (There's pork satay here) It's called Nan San Village BBQ Satay. It's cheaper than the other satay stalls elsewhere. Each stick costs 35 cents and it tastes pretty good too. Unfortunately, it doesn't serve authentic ketupats. The peanut sauce even comes with pureed pineapple for a tinge of sweetness and zest, which is yet another rarity for a satay stalls in Singapore.

On top of all the good food, the setting is also a rarity which I particularly enjoy. The environment feels very much like rustic al fresco coffeeshops in JB, except much, much, much safer in terms of security and hygiene. Or if you are more familiar with the local versions, Jalan Kayu. Except here, it is less crowded and serves tze char.

Must Tries: claypot fish-head, fish steamboat, claypot sea cucumber, satay
