  1. What matters to you ?

I love steamboat. So when a new, huge enticing spot pops up it's quite likely that I'd go to check it out. So J & I went to have a look-see, not really expecting what greeted us.

Chin Huat impresses by sheer variety. You walk in, & you see this dessert station that is a first in all the steamboat places I've been to. A couple of places usually have mango pudding, or herbal jelly, but here, you see this station that makes you go woah, at first glance. Because you can see chocolatey, cakey things, & crispy crackers etc laid in a tasteful fashion. If I remember correctly, there are even red pretty flower petals strewn around quite fetchingly. That won me over by 30%.

A quick look at the range of food items & their concept of being a Seafood Steamboat made up for the 60-70% & both of us were rather eager to seat ourselves to start our little boat.

They have a great range available, & the items are cleverly displayed to whet your appetite. Unlike most steamboat outlets that tend to have their food items in plastic or metal containers, Chin Huat kind of have their stuff labelled in a pseudo-Marche (or Village, whichever pleases) format-squiggly pretty font & all, then very pleasingly spread quite literally before you.

So we sat down, & had our meal. Almost immediately though, I started to perspire. We sat indoors, so it was supposed to be cool. So I'm thinking it was the way the steamboat was set up, in that the flame was too exposed. This discomfort, regretfully, continued & intensified throughout the course of the meal so you know how my experience went. (Being comfortable during my meal is one of my primary concerns !)

In case people go, perspire only ! What about the food ? Okay, there is a BBQ & Teriyaki station where the cooks will help you with your order. I picked Sambal Stingray, Fish fillet, & J had beef & chicken. I wonder if it was because our order was mixed up with someone else's but all the meats tasted the same. Similar flavour & marination. So, that didn't work well for me. The stingray was too tough & some parts were sadly cold.

The steamboat soup base was not flavourful & even with the items cooking, the taste just didn't come through. It was really average. J said that among all the steamboat places he has tried, what's strange about Chin Huat is that the sausage (what he usually likes to dunk into the boiling soup) is very lacking in taste. Now ain't that weird, sausages are like sodium capsules !

Surpise surprise, we did not have dessert at all ! Remember what I said about the dessert station ? Yup, it impressed me at first glance. So after our meal when we went over to check out the desserts, we were disappointed to see browned fruits, uncrisp crackers, & (on closer look) unappetizing chocolate creamy things. Some spots were also unreplenished so the supposed dessert station was actually not a real add-on after all. If there is one thing you should do before dining there, if you decide to, is to seriously take a good look at the items & whether you're happy with them before jumping into the meal upon seeing the colourful variety & pretty display.

Also, the staff are rather slow at plates collecting; I took a look around & almost all the tables were cluttered with empty plates. The service could do with some snapping up & promptness I felt. I mean, in a steamboat place, where it is mostly self-service, this aspect becomes what you can gauge staff service by, doesn't it ? Hmmm.

100g of prawn is allowed per pax so I guess that is quite a draw, along with Chin Huat's range of seafood & other food items. At $18.90++ per person, you might just be getting quite your worth if you are a meat/seafood person. However, for less, I know where I will go for a more enjoyable time & steamboat ! (:

P.S. For me, service, soup base & ambience is important during a steamboat session, so this didn't quite work for me, but if you don't care much for the three, then Chin Huat might be your pot of steamboat :D

P.P.S. OH Shh but .. secretly bring a bottle of mineral water to drink in there because iced drinks are sort of pricey at $2.00 for an average-sized glass. You know how fast you down them during a steamboat !!

    • OMG... i can't believe this cost $21!!! NOT WORTH IT!

      Dec 20, 2008
Oh man, i've never tried a buffet like this. I kind of miss the predecessor $12 buffet they had in marina. That was cheap and the variety was so much better than what they had now!

My parents initially wanted to sit indoors. But when we stepped in, oh man it smells like the WET MARKET. It's supposedly air-conditioned....supposedly. So we decided to sit outside.

I don't feel like commenting on the food, just some normal steamboat fare with very few choices for a $20 buffet. The only thing i ate more than once was the eclairs. That's nice, the ONLY nice thing I found there. Oh and talk about the speed they replenished the food. By 5pm, some cooked stuff and dessert already ran out! I didn't get to see much of those even later on.

I do not understand why there's still a queue outside with food like that. Would rather pay slightly more for a nicer buffet like sakura (much better variety and ambiance). DEFINITELY won't be back again!

      • It is a terrible place to have meals

        Nov 19, 2008
I visited the outlet in Novena at 5.10pm today (19 November 2008), I have a very unpleasant dinner with my wife and my 2 year old daughter and I have also submitted a feedback form to their Novena outlet staff but I wonder they will pass it to the boss.

        a) Firstly, my daughter is only 2 year old, when I visited the outlet, I was told to pay $10 for child who is 2 years old and above. Come on, how much can a 2 year old child eat? The most she ate was a small bowl of rice, some soup with some vegetables and that’s it. I don;t think it cost more than $1 even! This is the first time I came across a restaurant charging from 2 years old onwards!

I told the staff that I am not going to eat there and while I was leaving, then he said he will waive the $10 for the kid!

        b) After paying, I was given a receipt to collect live prawns and crabs from the opposite counter. I walked over, the staff (a china man) was there chatting on his mobile phone in Mandarin and I could tell it is a personal call. So I told a passing by lady waitress that I want to take some prawns, she shouted to that guy to attend to me but that guy just smile and he continued to talk on the phone. I was standing there for 5 minutes before he finally hung up the phone and unwillingly passed me the prawns and crabs.

        c) All the utensils (Plates, bowls, chopsticks etc ) are very dirty. Many of the customers including me were choosing the plates for taking of food. The hygiene level is very very poor and Ministry of Environment should really take action and close the restaurant for 2 weeks at least to punish the operator.

        d) All the staffs were not friendly at all. I told one of the staff that the plates were very dirty and she just starred at me as if I am talking to the air. I went to the cashier asking her is the boss around, she rudely said “NO”.

        e) I waited for 25 minutes for the BBQ chicken but to no avail. I walked to the BBQ counter, they were talking all the way and my plate were still at their table, so I told him I do not want it anymore and I left the restaurant.

Frankly speaking, last time when the late boss was around, I patronized the Marina outlet twice but situations were good but now, it is terrible. Even it is a FREE dinner for me, I will definitely turn down as well.

I paid a total of $37.80 and I stayed there for less than 35 minutes and we left. We didn’t eat much and even passed the crab to the next table as it really spoilt our evening.

Things got to be changed, if not Chin Huat Seafood’s reputation will be gone forever.

        Thanks

        Ed

        1. First was fresh, second a depreciating experience

          Mar 21, 2010
As from the title,  My first try was refreshing. The BBQ was delicious and especially so for the desserts.
But on a second try, the food ain't as delicious as it should be from my memory. The prawns and crabs were horribly unfresh for the 20odd that i was paying  that was few dollars more than the first try.
What's worthwhile:The eclair, terriyaki/BBQ meat are all you need to remember of frm this restaurant.

          Must Tries

Eclair, BBQ section (especially chilli beef and all the pork)

          • Attack of the live prawns

            Feb 14, 2010

Before I start my review I must say that Chin Huat\'s publicity is done really well. I\'d heard about their restaurants like, 3 years before I finally ate there? Then again, more publicity does not necessarily mean better food, yes? I didn\'t have high expectations of the food here, but thankfully it was still alright! Recounting:

For a steamboat buffet, there is indeed a large variety of food to choose from. Sushi, teppanyaki, shabu shabu, dimsum, desserts, live seafood (of course)... You name it! Notably, the live prawns were succulent and fresh. A winner! The rest of the seafood was just average. The shellfish actually tasted quite stale. :/

Teppanyaki was essentially garlic stir-fried meat/seafood. I wouldn\'t recommend this if you are not a great lover of garlic. The food is also overcooked and rather tasteless. The rest of the other buffet items are unremarkable as well. A saving grace is perhaps, the flavourful stock (chicken and tom yum)... Although it is heavy on the MSG too.

Chin Huat is clearly targetting the not-so-particular-about-food-but-must-be-cheap masses. But for the careful foodies like you and me, maybe we\'re better off at other steamboat buffet restaurants!

            • Don't waste your time, money and calories...

              Oct 3, 2009
A place not worth going! Don't waste your time, money and calories!!!

Saw their advertisement months ago and finally made a trip there last Tuesday, 29 Sep 09 around 8pm. About 10 tables were occupied at point of visit.

First impression was rather delightful. There were hot food, BBQ, 'stir fry', sushi and dessert corner plus the uncooked items, including softdrinks. However, disappointment set in quickly with the terrible qualiy of food, service and hygiene level.

As advertised, customers will get a portion of live prawn (2 miserable one), 4 prawn on sticks and crab (half of it) which are non re-fillable. We chose to boil the live prawn but have the rest BBQ. Prawn was decent but the crab seriously could not make it. It was not fresh at all and should have R.I.P in the dustbin hours ago.

Seafood was generally not fresh. Most 'la la' were dead but werw still in the tray for customer to consume. The re-fillable prawn was pathetic. There were only 8 of them left in the tray. When asked to re-fill the prawn as they looked stale, the staff replied,'Take whatever is there.' When pointed out that they were not fresh, he repeated the same response. Thought that encounter was bad, read on.

After 1 hour, my friend went to get more prawns. Having empty the last 3 miserable prawns in the tray, she asked politely for more. The same staff (which i encountered) ignored her and continued his work. Asked a second time, the staff just took a block of frozen prawn from the freezer and threw it in the tray...

Food in the warmer was mediocre. Dessert was so-so.

For those Teppanyaki lover, the frying table will definitely put you off. It was dirty, gressy and looked as if it will be wash once a week. As our table near the Teppanyaki counter, I could see the chef boiled the seafood till cooked than stir fry with some chili and garlic. No wonder the seafood taste was reduced by half.

It was amazing to witness all the staff went for their break, taking food from the counters which were meant for customers and sat at the non-aircon area around 10pm. And I mean ALL. Diners were left on our own. We have to wait for them to finish their before the chef came back to fry some 'Sotong' for us. 'Interesting' operating system...

Staff were like zombies walking around, expressionless. No initiative to clear the plates. Their behaviour suggest that since they will clear everything after customer left, might as well wait till then to clear them.

If such practice was witness when there's no crowd, I can't believe what will it be like during weekends.

Dinner is $18.90++ which comes up to about $22 per person. For that price, I would rather to go Bugis area where there are a few steamboat to choose from (ehh... not the Tian Tian Steamboat though...)

              • Regret wasting my time and money

                Aug 8, 2009
I took the trouble to register an account with Hungrygowhere.com because i was very disappointed and I definitely wanna write about it.

My friends and I decided to go Chin Huat Live Seafood (Thomson) because of the seemingly nice ambiance with great food shown on TV. Even though the online reviews have not been good, we thought we'd judge for ourselves. And boy, we should have trusted the reviews and save our money!

Upon reaching the place, we were very surprised to see the very long queue despite the bad reviews. Are those people like us, wanting to judge the place for themselves, or do they not check reviews before trying a restaurant? Managed to go in within 30 - 40 mins.

The number one turn-off was when making payment. I can accept that we have to make payment first before we were allowed any food. But I could not accept that they could only accept cash payment. The Chinese national cashier could not even say "cash" properly in English.

This restaurant was formally an open steamboat eating place in Marina South, charging only around $13 in cash. Now, here being a restaurant, do not even have a NETS facility for payment. Judging from their good business, they should have introduced payment facilities like NETS or credit card payments just like other restaurants, for the convenience of us customers.

The 5 of us were eating with our faces turning red literally as the place was extremely hot and sticky, just like back to the Marina South days. The table was too small to put our food which wasnt alot.

We could not bbq our food - all food to be bbq-ed have to be given to the "BBQ station". So the fun of bbq-ing our food is gone.

The usual steamboat pot food(cannot-go-wrong food), like vegetables, mushrooms, meatballs, fishballs, etc taste ok. BBQ food like chicken and pork were a little tough (overcooked), we much preferred to do the BBQ ourselves.

I didnt know how to get the prawns and crabs, so I asked a restaurant helper. All she said was "You cannot take". I was taken aback, coz isnt this what i came here for? I later guessed that I had to show my accompanying receipt to the guys at the seafood station. I was right, so what was that helper talking about. Anyway, a limited number of prawns and crabs were given.

Prawns were very fresh and sweet, I like them! The crab was initially very fresh and sweet, but as i ate on, it became very salty, much like I was eating crab cooked in sea water. My lips and throat turned very dry.

Time for dessert, something i was looking forward to. A huge disappointment. All did not taste good except the eclairs. Not much variety and the refill was very slow. I feel kinda cheated coz I remembered TV showed quite a huge variety of desserts.

I will definitely not return to this restaurant because the food wasnt good and lousy ambiance. For $22.25, it's not worth it at all. I urge everyone not to waste time patronizing this restaurant, which doesnt have the standard of a restaurant. It is stuck with its Marina South days, except now its much more expensive.

I saw this buffet being advertised on the TV quite some time ago and have always wanted to check it out. Basically because it is a buffet, it's cheap and nearby. You dont really need fanciful reasons to starve yourself silly!

It was kinda empty when me and my fren reached the place. I guess we were the KIASU lot, being the pioneer group of customer on a Saturday night.

The variety of food was damn LOT! From salad, vegetables, seafood, meat, cooked food to dessert! I like it especially, because the same kind of meat/seafood came with different marination such as black pepper, spicy...

                  • The worst steamboat I ever had

                    May 9, 2009
With TV recommendation, our family of 10 people visited this restaurant today to celebrate mother's day. From the moment we arrived, everything seem not right. We are being told to pay the full amount first before we can start the buffet. Here is my comment for this place :
                    1) over crowded
                    2) the seat in air-con place - too stuffy, warm. The outdoor seat - too packed, warm, limited walking space.
                    3) prawns & crabs are limited, only few pcs for 1 person. Both are tiny & NOT FRESH.
                    4) Although there are lots of varieties, but refill is slow.
                    5) waitress don't talk & comment, just use her fingers to point at.
                    6) The most important is the soup base, we all find that is too artificial sweet. The Tom Yam soup is weird, too sweet & has a funny sour taste.
I have never tasted such a horrible steamboat in my life, with so many prawns & crabs leftover in the pot which I feel so bad & sinful. It's the worst choice and it happen on mother's day... I can tell the disappointment from my mum's look. Sorry to say that, I will never ever patronage this place again even if it's free for me!

                    • Not bad for an early meal

                      Apr 21, 2009
We live in Novena and have often walked by Chin Huat while it was packed and with lines of people waiting. Since we have a small daughter we often go for an early meal and this worked out well for us. From 5-7 PM you get a couple dollars off (must leave by 7PM) and there are no crowds and lots of food.

I had never been to a 'steam boat' restaurant in Singapore, but have been to numerous ones in Japan (nabe). The way this one works is you pay upon arrival and get your cheap-o plastic cups for the free flow soft drinks. There is dual soap pot for boiling stuff on your table, half spicy, half broth. You pay for about 100g of 'live' shrimp and crab which you claim with a receipt (about 5 shrimp and one small crap) and get grilled up. There is a teppan (flat steel grill) and bbq area for you to get your food cooked at. You choose from this massive buffet that is well labeled as to food stuff and where it is appropriate to cook. For BBQ and teppan you attach your clothes line clips with table number to the plates and the cooked food will appear when finished.

We tried a number of sea food items in our steam boat on the table. The spicy soup and broth were both fine and its like making your own yong tau fu (if you know what that is). We also got some chicken and beef bbq. The chicken was nice, but the beef, though tasty, was a thicker cut than I prefer and a little too much sinew. Oh well. Not bad. As there is a selection of sushi and a western cooked foods area too my daughter has a few french fries as well as a few pieces of sushi. The dessert buffet in the middle is fine, nothing special, with a chocolate fountain (oddly labeled as dark chocolate when it was closer to hot chocolate) and included fruits and small cakes too.

All and all good for us. As our daughter is around 6 years old having a wide selection of foods on any day makes a meal easy. The price wasn't bad for what we ate, though the I would have appreciated my daughter being able to get an extra cup for water ("One cup pa pason.") and there are zero napkins/serviettes. Seems like a odd place to skimp.

Would we return? Probably. Close to us, good variety, not too expensive for an occasional meal.

                      • Over Crowded Buffet

                        Jan 10, 2009
Decided to go on my brother's birthday. When we reached there at 8pm, there were still a long queue. Was thinking was it really so good. After waiting for half an hour we managed to get in.

Food varity is consider wide given the price. Just that the place is super crowded. The table are small even for 5 pax. Not enough space to put your stuffs.

They have sections for cook food and desert. 100gms of live prawns and 1/2 small crab is given for per pax.

Can have choice of BBQ or gilled/cook by the chief. But when served, its usually cold.

At least it is better (in terms of not that smokey) compared to the previous outlet in Marina South.

Ideal for gathering only if you don't mind waiting and the crump space that is. Service is rather slow and they will not clear your plate promtly.

                        =)

Was rather impressed when I first stepped into the restaurant.
A complete makeover from the one at Marina Bay? =)

$20.90 for a reasonably variety of food..
live crabs and prawn but limit to just one-time collection.
three way to cook the food..
the health-conscious ones can go for the steamboat..
others can choose between teppanyaki or bbq...

Dessert lovers can give their yummy eclairs a try..

But it would be advisable to be there early as the queue gets longer as the night falls.. haha..
