| Quality Chinese Food
Never been to this branch of the Crystal Jade group of restaurants before, always a first time for a gathering of former friends in a workplace.
Food: We agreed to order the $700 dinner.
Starter: smallihs plate of roasted pig, chicken, char siew and jellyfish. All were tasty. 8pts
Soup: Prawn with sharksfin - but has to fish for it. Served in a milky pink soup which looked like pumpkin soup. 6pts
Fried prawns in skin in garlic - prawns were fresh and tasty - suspect they are sea bred prawns, not the pond cultivated version. Garlic pieces were tasty. 8pts
Crispy skin chicken - good, haven't tasted this style since Moi Lum. 9pts
Partin catfish in HK style sauce - interesting that the fish had no muddy taste at all - suspect is the sea / riverine bred version. Flaky and white colour added to the enjoyment. 8 pts
Mushroom/Sea cucumber with broccoli - best dish of the night. Mushrooms were succulent and strong tasting - suspect they're from Jap. Sea cucumber, firm and crunchy - not the soft variety. Almost like pig skin. 9pts
Dessert - anticlimax, packet coconut cream with sago and melon. Quite disappointing. 5[ts
Ambience: Sat in the main area but it was quite quiet as it was a corner table. Pleasant and clean.
Value: Pricey
Service: Excellent - many seasoned Sporean waitresses. |

| Delectable chinese cuisine
This is definitely one of the top chinese restaurants in Singapore without a doubt. Though agreeably, it is and can be pricey depending on what you order. But you're willing to pay top dollar, this is what you can expect. The restaurant offers private dining and is well-known for its Chinese cuisine. Do book in advance if you want a reservation on weekends! |

| Good Chinese food
I am not sure if this restaurant group is from Hong Kong or Singapore but I see this in both countries. No matter, this place is packed for lunch even on a Wednesday! Luckily we had a reservation made by our business associates.
No exactly a place to talk business, it being pretty loud when packed. Food is as good as any I've had in Singapore (but I have not been to too many restaurants in Singapore). The "crispy noodles" are fantastic - not sure what you call it but I liked that very much.
Roast Chicken is juicy and skin perfectly crisp. A delightful dish even if it is supposed to be a "simple" Chinese dish. Assorted roast meats are good but a tad below what you can find in Hong Kong or Toronto and Vancouver. Shrimps with salted "egg yoke" is a little too salty for me but shrimps are fresh and crunchy. Don't really remember all the dishes but the steamed fish is great as well.
Overall it is a good dinning experience. Not sure how much it cost though, being business lunch paid by Singaporean counterpart. =) |

| The Palace...
I've always been attracted by their decor whenever I'm walking past this outlet at Ngee Ann. And after consulting my financial consultant (wallet), the decision is to always forget about dining there Till one day...
It was my sibling's birthday, and we decided to dine here. Not regretful in the least bit I have to say. The staff were very attentive though one was a little short on EQ and overdid her service by constantly hovering around our table and fussing over every little thing such as seeing that the teacups don't remain less than 3/4 full, the plates (almost 1/3 utilised) were cleared and and so on. This irritated us quite a bit. However, there was one staff who was absolutely fantastic in her service and was good in making PR with the "bill settler". She saw to it that our dishes were hot and occassionally popped by to ask how things were and whether she could improve our dining experience further.
As usual, while waiting for the dishes, I took the time to look around. The place was rather impressive. The lighting wasn't too bright and fitting to the spacious and tall interior. If I remember correctly, there were a couple of chandeliers overhead which were rather simple and helped provide a warm feel to the massive space overhead.
The three of us ordered 5 dishes (I do not remember the actual names);
The Fried Rice with seafood wrapped in lotus leaves (approx $12) was one of the last dishes that arrived but turned out to be one of the best served. Not only was it piping hot, but it was flavourful and the texture was lovely. The rice was intact and you could taste the individual ingredients all coming together to form a wonderful blend. It was too much for the three of us so we had to bring back the leftovers.
The Crispy Roasted Chicken (approx $18) was good. The meat was moist and the amount of salt used wasn't too much. The skin was soft and held the tender flesh very well. Delightful dish.
Their Steamed Garoupa (approx $35) was definitely fresh. The flesh slid off in slices easily and sifting the meat from the bones was easy. The sauce accompaniment was that of light soya sauce which went with the dish rather well. A common dish, but the freshness was fantastic.
The Broccoli with Crab meat and roe (approx. $15). This dish was ordered because my dining companions felt there wasn't enough greens in our order. (whatever) The crab meat was alright though the sweet taste of their flesh got a little masked by some thick and starchy paste. The roe...well, the roe can't really be tasted considering how small it was.
The Roasted Duck (approx. $20) apparently was the favourite of one dining companion. It was highly recommended though I felt it was on the "so-so" level and tasted like it should. Saltish seasoning with tender flesh covered by slightly crispy skin. It met the basic stereotyping of the dish so not much points there.
On the overall, a pleasant sampling of the crystal jade group. Doubt I'll come back though. But if I do, the fried rice in lotus leaf is definitely a must. Also, bear in mind my rating for the service is only meant for the pleasant waitress who had quite a bit of initiative. |
