  1. avatar Curry Favor (Velocity @ Novena Square)

Curry favor is the first Japanese Curry specialty restaurant in Singapore. At curry favor we firmly believe in creativity but always authentic to the culinary roots of Japanese curry. We do not serve the typical instant curries that even top fine dining Japanese establishments in Singapore dish out.

What we have is a range of authentic Japanese curries that are carefully created by our Japanese chef in a process that spans more than 5 hours daily. Our signature curry sauce is the essence of our intense research effort, using only fresh vegetables to bring out the spectrum of flavors from carefully selected curry spices.

Curry Favor’s Japanese curry is one of the best you can find anywhere in Singapore, or South East Asia. Here at Curry Favor, we welcome you to savor one of the finest forms of Japanese cuisine that millions of Japanese must have on a weekly basis. And, by the way, Japanese curry does not have to be very sweet and gooey. =)

    1. This curry rocks!

      May 13, 2008
A Singaporean friend introduced me to this place after I asked her about Japanese curry in Singapore. Been on the road a bit so kinda miss mum's weekly curry cook out. I won't be home for a while so was lookin for some substitute to tide me over. =)

This place serves some of the best Japanese curry I've ever had period. Authentic stuff man. Even mum can't cook this. My work had taken me to enough cities for me to say this is one of the best Japanese curry outside Japan.

Who would have thought in Singapore? I like Singapore and the people I meet here are fantastic but not exactly somewhere I expect to find authentic Japanese curry.

I particularly enjoyed the Hire Katsu and the Beef curry. If you are a fan of Japanese curry this is good stuff. Good food and great company makes a magnificent evening. Will be back when I come back to Singapore next trip.
I also recommend this place for

        • Unforgettable Experiences at Curry Favor, Novena

          Apr 18, 2008
Me and my friends are thinking where to celebrate our friend's birthday next week. While roughly thinking all the restaurants in Novena and Novena Square 2. All got into our mind the curry favor japanese kitchen located at 3rd floor beside of Monsoon & Magic Wok. We are not fan of curry because when you say "CURRY", the first thing comes into your mind is with coconut base, spicy and the smell is quite undesirable. But when we tried the curry in this restaurant,it's very different and no coconut milk at all. unbelievable:-). So everytime we are craving for curry, we go to curry favor. And while having chit-chat about curry favor, we are sharing our funny, good, and worst experiences in different restaurants. In Curry Favor experiences:
FOOD / BEVERAGE: Food was very nice especially the japanese curry. At side orders, we always ordered Age Cheese Chikuwa (it's a cuttlefish inside have cheese but now with different coating but it's still tastes good)and Stuffed Mushroom (with prawn & scallop inside but must eat while it's hot and dipped into tartar sauce). For main dishes, we liked the rosu katsu(pork with a third layer of fats),hire katsu(pork fillet),cheese katsu(pork filet inside have cheese),pork stewed(pork belly), beef and vegetable (but the taste quite bland, but i liked the vegetables inside),beef and mushroom(..uhmm..very nice and delicious especially the beef cutlet very tender and it cooked medium rare),we also loved the beef and mushroom curry udon(tis is the best, the udon is very springy and it compliments with curry, esp. the extra spicy). But we are just wondering about the level of spiciness.(1)Regular w/c is not spicy at all (2)Spicy w/c a bit spicy (but sometimes it's very spicy); (3) Extra Spicy w/c is really spicy (but sometimes too spicy that can't even taste the curry, only can taste the chilli). In Beverages, i liked the barley tea. Even the taste is not that nice but the smells very nice and i remember what the waitress told me when i asked her w/c japanese teas that's very nice. She recommend me this tea because she says in Japan tis is the popular tea coz it reduces stress and help blood influidity..uhmm... she's quite impressive that in a waitress can explain all the uses of diff. kind of jap. teas. I think she's a foreigner:-)
AMBIENCE: we liked the paintings esp. the cows. so cute. the place is cozy if not busy time. We remembered our first try in curry favor, i think it just opened that time. Lunch time is quite crowded, admittedly maybe because it's new. But quite irritating coz one of the staff (wearing diff.uniform)is shouting in the middle of the restaurant, the table no. who's asking for the bill and recently shouting "Order Out!?!" but as we always eat here, we get used to it. But we find it quite irritating sometimes.
VALUE: Quite expensive compare to the other restaurants in novena esp. Lunch set but reasonable coz it also comes with drinks and dessert. We liked the vanilla ice cream topping.
SERVICE: Service quite disappointing. The food is very slow. The food quality sometimes not good. Salad got hair. One time, one of my sis.'s friend dine-in curry favor, they say that they found plastic inside the cheese katsu, they informed the staff but the staff thought they were just joking till they give the plastic then the staff apologized.
STAFF: Quite friendly. i think only three full-timers in this restaurant and the rest are part-timers coz every day new faces. Staff are very hard-working and quite fast but not that professional.
Two where wearing different uniforms maybe under management staff: (1) Tall girl is quite fierce while taking order not that friendly, never smile while taking order, we asked if any recommendations, she just say if we are in a hurry we try the stewed curry?!? that's it. but anyways we decided to pick whichever we think nicer.
          (2) This girl is also wearing diff. uniform. Very friendly, have good pr and quite convincing when she recommend something but do make face when we don't want to order some side dishes. And dressed-up unpleasantly coz we accidentally saw her backside while she's clearing the other table. Sorry, but it's quite disgusting.
          (3) The small girl, also friendly and very polite. She doesn't talk too much but when you asked something about the food, she's very knowledgeable in explaining. i'm wondering if she's a local but cannot be coz she's very polite. We liked her to served us coz you will feel that you are really taken-care of. She's not fast like the other staffs who ran to picked up foods and serve foods but you will noticed she's in focus and she knows what she will do next. And always served food nicely and says "Enjoy your meal". I admired this kind of staff. I think the management should hire more of like this staff. service like fine-dining restaurant. keep up the good work!
          (4) Part-timers. Very fast till we just finished our last bite then they cleared our table. The staffs are always on a rush. Most of the time they just served food any how then run. you want to request something but they just ran fast.

          • Curry for those who are intolerant to spicy food

            Apr 16, 2008
Had a short lunch hour at Novena and decided to try out Curry Favor. Do try out their lunch sets, more worth it than the normal ala carte meal. Had a Beef Yaki & Tempura Bento Set myself and she had a Chicken & Fish Fry Combo Set. The sets came with a choice of either miso soup or salad, a soft drink and a scoop of vanilla ice-cream for dessert.
Have to admit that I was fairly disappointed when my set came. Only 6 small chunks of beef?! The tempura was satisfactory, 3 ebi and some vege. Rice, 2 pieces of tamago(Japanese sweet egg), a side of shredded lettuce and potato salad completed the bento. However I was pleasantly surprised when I popped the first chunk of beef in my mouth. It was tender, juicy and succulent. The sauce went so well with the beef that I found myself slowly savouring the 6 precious chunks I had. The tempura dip was tasty and it sat very well with the tempura dishes. If you like your tempura dip with full flavour, this was it.
The Chicken & Fish Fry combo looked very humble next to my bento set. It comes with japanese curry on the side so you can pour in the curry or dip the cutlets at your own discretion. Curry comes in 3 levels of potency, Regular, Spicy and Extra Spicy. We had the Spicy knowing that the Regular would probably not have much effect. The chicken cutlets were deep fried and it was really tasty and the meat was juicy. Yum! The fish, even better because it was fresh!! You could taste the freshness of the meat under all that batter. Dipped in curry and you have the ultimate combination.
All in all, I'd say that food was above the average level of Japanese curry you'd find at other restaurants. Service wise, they are short-handed, 3 ladies on the floor during lunch hour. 2 are foreigners whose english is not exactly fully understandable so do be patient when ordering with them. E.g I'd asked one of the waitresses what brand of ice tea they carried, she brought out the glass of tea to me and she said, "Yours." I was thinking, "Of course it's mine lah. Who else can it be?" So I kinda figured out later that she was saying, "Yeo's" instead. So, once again do be patient with the staff.
Overall it was a pleasant lunch, not near fine dining but definitely worth trying especially if you're into something new.

            1. $12.90++ weekday buffet lunch

              Jan 6, 2010
Decided to give Curry Favor a try after seeing the reviews on weekday lunch buffet. Headed down to Novena square outlet during noon time and was kinda surprised that its quite empty. The decor/ambience as well as the helpful staff are the plus points for Curry Favor.

              Let's talk about food.

              Curry-Chicken vs Minced Beef
The signature dish would be their curry. Thus, tried both chicken curry and minced beef curry. I preferred chicken curry but didn't really like the chicken chunks. Preferred to have the fried chicken cutlet/pork cutlet and curry sauce drenched over it. Maybe I'm not really a beef lover, so that's not for me.

              Tempura/Mixed Fry/Onion Rings
I particularly enjoyed the fried items section which included onion rings, ebi tempura, lady finger & brinjal tempura, pork cutlet & chicken cutlet. However, the ebi tempura came out only during my last serving of food.

Saute Fish/Some 2 other chicken dishes which I didnt try/egg (normal omelette)
I didn't like the fish cos of the taste that's associated with the sauce. Egg was normal..
Chicken dishes looked too ordinary and not so japanese style, thus, forgo them as my stomach can't contain.

Fruits(watermelon, longan etc) and very small cubes of brownies
Brownies are nice, but too small a piece to savour the taste.

              Salad bar
Not so interested in salads, forgo it too..

Overall, I don't think I'll go back for the buffet. The portion of food at the buffet counter seem to be kinda small. The rice at the counter wasn't enough to serve two ladies when me and my friend were there. So, my friend had salad first. In addition, I thought the food were not hot enough... slightly cold for rice & curry. Maybe can try their ala-carte food next time but not their weekday lunch buffet @ $12.90++.

              • Let's Curry Favor it

                Dec 7, 2009
Buffet .... Japanese Curry....interesting....let's try it.

We did not know where to eat, but have decided to try this place out. The sofa chairs looked terrible at first. There were stains on the chairs, and we actually stopped ourselves from sitting down for 5 seconds. I guess you should not have sofas if you are going to serve curry.

A word of advice for those of us who are going to try out the buffet. Writing down '1' under qty means that you get literally 1 piece. I ordered 2 ebi fries for 4 people, thinking it meant 2 portions, and then 2 pieces came. I think that the management are careful, and don't want to waste resources, which was quite refreshing. I know that as Singaporeans, we tend to overeat at buffets. So talk to them and get advice on how much you would like to order. The staff seemed helpful.

The other thing was that the food served was freshly cooked. So we enjoyed eating nice, hot food. We liked the tempura and the unagi. We also loved the ice-cream mochi and the ability to change your order of drinks(which is part of the buffet)

I was disappointed about the Beef curry though. What came was mincemeat in a curry. The curry was good, but I wanted to eat the chunks of beef as seen in the picture shown in the menu. I didn't want to ask any more questions when it came. I felt a bit tired of asking questions.

So, now that I have 'favored', if you want to, go ahead.

I hear that the buffet is much cheaper on weekdays, so it will definitely be even more worth it then.

                • Awesome Jap Curry!

                  Nov 16, 2009
Curry favor is one of the few.. if not the only.. curry house in Spore that makes their own curry... bringing authentic n delicious own-made japanese curries to the masses... I applaud them for this... I love curries of all sorts and of course i love e thick jap curry that comes with a sweet tinge!

My faves at Stamford side are the beef tenderloin curry and the tonkatsu curry... The beef tenderloin curry was my 1st love of curry favor.. i was wowed over by e tender n flavourful beef that goes wonderfully with e curry! Having tenderloin with curry is new to me then so i was quite impressed n promptly fell in love with it....

There's a new tenderloin + button mushrooms in red wine curry sauce... it's yummy as well but i didn't really fell in love with e mushrooms as being fat n round shrooms.. they did not absorbed the curry.. still stickin to my beef tenderloin curry as 1st love!

The tonkatsu at curry favor might not be at the same level as tonkichi's but it's a decent version.. The curry comes in a pretty serving bowl that allows controlled pouring of curry over e lovely sticky rice... Did ventured out to other side dishes and mains but none leave a deep impression..

With a new branch at Novena, i was tempted to check it out.. even more so with e $10.80 lunch buffet! The spread was quite generous with a couple of salads and loads of dressings, big cups of chawanmushi, chicken curry, minced beef curry, tempura, chicken katsu, fried onions, savoury meatballs, fish slices etc.. The chicken curry has the signature yummy taste of curry favor's curry and goes well with rice.. the minced beef is not too bad as well but prefer e chicken.. e rest of e spread r decent but not wow...

Overall, the buffet is pretty good value but doesn't showcase the best curry favor has to offer... if u r looking for a cheap eat with good jap curry go for e buffet! if u r looking for a real yummy jap curry meal then go ala carte!

P.S. I still think the branch at city hall is way better!

                    Oct 27, 2009
I went for hi-tea buffet at $15.80 on a recent Saturday and it was a great experience.

                    1) I like the cushion-styled sitting and the dimmer lights which create a serene relaxed atmosphere. There's even a pillow which you can hug while you eat and chat. The music was jazz-like and not too disruptive.
                    2) The female boss (assumed she's the boss since she's not in any uniform) was very friendly. Let us in at 2.30 although hi-tea was officially at 3pm. Really, some places should learn from this example and be more flexible.
                    3) The food variety was ok for that price. You can check their menu at their website. Got a few drinks for choices and pretty nice desserts despite the limited variety. But you can't blame for that price.

Now let's get to the food quality.
                    1) Love their fried tempura! The batter was fragrant and it is that authentic jap flour they use like in those fine jap restaurants which would charge an arm and a leg for it. Had 2 servings. That tempura mix was lavish with two fishes, two prawns and a few other vegetables. You can order tempura prawns when you don't feel having having the fried veg.
                    2) The miso soup was great. One taste and you know it's really cooked with appreciation and patience.
                    3) The chawanmushi was well-prepared too- not too hard or too soft/mushy. Very smooth too.
                    4) Love their fried crab croquette! Creamy inside with a crispy covering, fried to golden brown!
                    5) Stir-fry veg is good for those who don't want to keep binging on fried food. Makes you feel healthier.
                    6) The okonimiyaki tasted like veg pancake with a nice fragrant taste. Had repeated servings for it. Each small serving comes with 2 tiger prawns. :)
                    7) Pork-wrapped roll is decent too with asparagrus and straw mushrooms in it. Not too oily and the pork slice is thinly wrapped to perfection!
                    8) The siew mai and the gyoza are great in taste and flavour. You know you can't find them in NTUC or local factory outlets (Unlike those in Sakura).
                    9) They ran out of the jap desserts and gave brownie cakes and mochi ice-cream as replacement. The small brownie cubes are pretty decent although I prefer richer milk chocolate and more wetness. But I love the mochi ice-cream the most! The chocolate mochi has a thin chocolatey layer in between and the skin is really tender. Peach mochi ice cream is refreshing too.

One nice thing about Curry Favour is that the drinks are not too sweet. Love their home-made ice lemon tea. It doesn't make you feel sinful.

Of course, there are other nice dishes but the listed ones are my own favourites. If you are to take on their buffet dinner, try their soft-shell crab. My mum loves it. Unagi is also nice. Grilled to perfection sweetly with no fishy smell which I hate.

Their _alacarte_ buffets are definitely value-for-money, esp. the weekend hi-tea ones! $15.80 is a steal. Imagine that places like Ichiban already priced a set meal at $14-$25.

                    • Cosy place for great curry and tempura

                      Oct 19, 2009
Hubbs and I were drawn by the Super Value Buffet weekday lunch @ $10.80++ per head so we decided to give it a try last Friday.

Ambience : Cosy with interesting pictures

Food :Not a huge spread but substantial.
The hot food displayed in food warmers included:-
Beef curry (I don't take beef but according to hubbs, its not bad)
chicken curry (delicious with generous chicken pieces)
                      Mixed Vegetables
                      Toufu Calamari dish
                      Prawn Tempura (nice and crispy)
                      Vegetable Tempura
                      Miso soup

I was also quite pleased with the starters which included coleslaw, and a pasta salad. The chawanmushi came with a mushroom and a piece of chicken in it was very good too.

Special mention about the dessert: Besides the sweet water melon , the die die must try is their chocolate brownie cut in dainty cubes>> oh so sinfully rich and yummy!

We were also given a choice of one drink.

                      Service:
The waiters were quite attentive initially. They were quick to provide a babychair for my little one. And they offered her a baby drinking cup, which I thought was a nice touch. But when the lunch crowd started to fill up the restaurant at 1pm, they were a little slow in clearing the plates.

We found the food to be above average. Overall a good experience and good value.

                      • An upsetting experience

                        Jun 15, 2009
The restaurant had great decor and the sofa seats were really comfortable and it's a nice place to chill out with your friends actually. But what's most important to me is the quality of food and the service rendered at the restaurant.

My friends and i were warmly welcomed into the restaurant by the waitress and we were told that for every 3 paying diners for the lunch buffet, 1 dines free. It meant that the 4 of us only had to pay for the price of 3, which we thought was a great deal. However, when we were about to pay the bill, the waitress asked us for our UOB card, which we didnt have. So in the end, we had to pay for the price of 4 because the promotion was only valid for UOB card holders. I wont mind paying the full price, but at least the waitress could have made it clear to us right from the beginning that the promotion was only valid for UOB card holders. My friends and i couldnt help but feel that we've been cheated.

Each serving of the octopus had only 2 miserly pieces. The agedashi tofu was supposed to be fried and served wif sauce, but the tofu turned out to be a disgusting mess because of the tofu wasnt fried properly and it had this jelly-like layer on the outside. The oreo milkshake was so thick, the oreo bits were floating on the surface and it tasted like very very thick milk. Other than that, the chawanmushi and curry were great. There was free flow of drinks. And esp the 2 pieces of mochi ice cream! (i thought we were allowed to order 4 pieces per person?)

I would only reccommend this place to fried food lovers, looking for a place that you and your friends can chill out for hours. (apparently the restaurant is rather empty during the afternoon) And honestly, paying $22.80++ is a little too much for the limited variety of food, nevermind the not-so-tasty quality.

                          Feb 27, 2009
Found this curry shop in a corner of Novena Sq. LOved the curry but wish the katsu is more juicy. Taste pretty authentic tho' we asked for the spicy version which has more pepper. Those who are watching their weight like me can order the half-size portion which then leaves enough room in the tummy for desserts which is good too.

Ordered the beef curry(full set), katsu curry (half set) that comes with potato salad whilst the kid had a noodle set with fried chicken and fries. Kid loved the noodles and mochi ice-cream but can't say much about all the fried stuff. Katsu curry half set looks more value for money than the full set. Extra dessert order is the matcha ice-cream/cheese/red bean layer cake.

Last eaten in Nov 2008 for dinner.

Was searching for new places to eat, came across this shop at the corner. Ever since back from Japan trip, Jap food in S'pore don't taste that fantastic...

The curry is nice and thus meets the shop name. The fried food is fantastic too (of course, so much oil was used zzz).

Not too bad (early dinner = not much crowd)

                            • value for $ buffet

                              Jan 8, 2009
Japanese buffet dinner for $23 per pax is quite value, even though the don't have sashimi, their strength is on the curry, fried stuff and the drinks and mochi ice-cream that are part of the buffet. We have been a fan of Curry Favor at stamford and this is our first visit to the Novena branch.

As it is tuck in a onscure corner without windows, the dark interior decor copied from the stamford branch makes this place looks down and gloomy. The stamford branch has full length windows on 2 walls to balance the dark interior. I guess they applied standardization without looking at the local condition.

My wife, 2.5 yrs daughter and I went on a wed evening and the restaurant is less than half full which means we have space and prompt service.

Here's a run down on the dishes we tried

Unagi - this is our fav and we ordered 5-6 portions, the fish is fatty and nicely grilled, even my daughter likes this

Unagi and cucumber salad - nicely cut jap cucumbers, good balanced for the fried stuff

Yasai Itame - nice crunchy vege dish to balance the other fried stuff

Rosu katsu, Cheese katsu, Mushroom fry, ebi fry, soft shell crab, chicken katsu - mostly fried just nice, though I think the thick batter is too over powering for the soft shell crab, they should also provide some shredded raw cabbage to cleanse the palate after the fried stuff, otherwise it can be quite jerlat for the tongue and stomach (or was that their delibrate omission to curb the appetite of customers?

Tempura - not crispy enough, in fact... soggy, did they cool the batter before frying?

Minced beef curry, fish curry - nice curry, right portion, not too salty and we are able to eat it like a stew without rice

Kani (crab stick) salad - great!

                              Chuka hotate - OK

Ice lemon tea - not so sweet and not too much tea which is good cause my wife can't sleep with too much caffeine.

Mochi ice cream - serving has 4 mochi, great way to end the meal

Service was prompt and polite. We really like the small serving portions that allow us to sample a wide variety of food, actually that's the main draw of this buffet.

They should do something to the decor, the corner location of the restaurant + the dark interior isn't going to draw walk in crowds and it is not adequate to depend on japanese curry fans only.

                              • Comfort food??

                                Jan 7, 2009
Initially i had no wish to post this review. However, after reading many good reviews of this outlet, i felt that they do not justify the lousy food being served by this outlet.

Even though this Velocity outlet shares the same name as the one at Stamford house, there is great disparity in terms of food quality!

I found a flyer on my car windscreen with promises of auhentic japanese comfort food with photographs of Katsu Curry, Agedashi Tofu, Croquettes and soft shel crabs...CURRY FAVOR @ Velocity Novena Square.

Henceforth, my boyfriend and i decided to check it out. It took us a while to find the shop. We stood at the entrance for a while, hesitating if we should enter. The outlet lighting was dim and the black sofas which double as dining seats were lazed with food crumbs and lint. There were 3 empty tables with half eaten dishes.

Like typical Singaporeans, we thought,"maybe the business is so good that they do not have time to clean the seats and clear the tables."

We were greeted by friendly philipino staff and ushered to our table. We ordered the chawanmushi, soft shell crab, agedashi tofu, katsu curry, assorted tempura. Despite the fact that i had indicated that the items will be shared by myself and my boyfriend, we were not given sharing plates.

The tempura arrived, with no sight of the dipping sauce. The pork cutlet was very thin and dry, so one can imagine not to expect any meat juices. True enough, the pork was dry and over-fried. The chawanmushi was filled with big bubbles, meaning that the kitchen had steamed the egg custard on high heat. The chawanmushi was normal, nothing comforty about it. The soft shell crab was overly coated by a full jacket of flour batter that i can't even taste the crab. Same for the assorted tempura.I suppose the only thing that we appreciated most was the oil used for deep frying is very clean.

The curry sauce was bland and tasted like vaccumm packed curry sauce. I could not detect the " spectrum of flavors from carefully selected curry spices". The final taste certainly does not justify for the 5 -hour processing that the Curry Favour Team claims. There was something added to the curry sauce that makes me thirsty for hours after the meal.S & B instant mix would have tasted better.

Perhaps, this restaurant has problems juggling with the high cost of ingredients and probably high rental costs. The waitress cleared our plates before we finished our food, I had to stop her by telling her that we are not done yet. Our tea were only re-filled after we requested twice.

Dear Curry Favour Team, it is good to know that your sauces are made from scratch, invloving 5-hour long processing with fresh ingredients. Taste and flavour, which your shop name suggest is also very important.
