Great Dessert Cakes!!

Bakerzin is only made available at a few places, such as Vivocity, Paragon etc. but never once did I get around trying out the food and desserts available. BUT I finally did!!! Though it was not at Bakerzin but rather, its subsidiary located (narrowly) at Wisma Atria.

We were only there for desserts, after a long debate over possible dessert locations on a late Friday evening. And after much debate in front of the dessert fridge, we decided on a Foret Noir and Chocolate Amer.

Foret Noir is effectively the Black Forest Cake and for its price, it was definitely a hefty serving. =) Upon sticking one's fork into the cake, these are the following layers (almost in that order):

1. Chocolate Flakes
2. Milky & Buttery Cream
3. Chocolate Sponge Cake
4. Cherries soaked in Kirschwasser
5. Chocolate Mousse Layer
6. Milky & Buttery Cream
7. Chocolate Sponge Cake

It was a truly good effort, though with some let-downs, such as a chocolate sponge cake that was a little too dry and a too thick cream layer. However, the cherries were pretty authentic and if one slowly savours its taste, one can taste the Kirschwasser. =) Commendable dessert!!

My friend was betting if I'll like the Chocolate Amer or the Foret Noir more, and well, no prize for guessing it right. Chocolate Amer was truly chocolate-rich and it was so good and overwhelming that I absolutely loved it!! Yummy!! The chocolate mousse was thick and its cocoa-taste was so strong, that well, it made my day. =) A definite must-try-again for me!!

This cafe is actually pretty small, so seats are pretty limited. It can get really vibrant & noisy or quiet & peaceful, depending on the time of the day. But later into the evening, this is definitely a good place to do catching up with friends.

Really smiley and polite staff!! Commendable service attitude, even though we were there for only less than 30 minutes.

Chances of me popping by the cafe again?? Pretty high!!! Reason being for the purchase of cakes for birthday celebrations, as well as to try more dessert cakes. YUMMY!!

PSST!! Check out the selection of cakes online!! Mouthwatering is an understatement!! And discounts are available for online purchases as well!! =D

Must Tries: Chocolate Amer

should have listened

Maybe it was my fault for having fairly high expectations after reading some reviews about this place however i dont think it was such a pleasant experience for my partner and i ...

a. the set dinner $18.90 ++ is affordable but;

b. the menu was extremely limited in terms of choice and variety [both my partner and i felt so] &

c. the service was virtually non-existent with only 3 people available and none of them were really present. Furthermore it was not even packed as only 3 tables were occupied ?

d. i ordered a passion fruit SODA $4.90 and i was given a passion fruit TEA instead &

e. finally, we just ordered a warm chocolate cake before leaving for a PROPER MEAL. At least the cake was decently yummy that made both my partner and i happy :S

appeased

after a not so satisfactory dessert at our former dining location, i and i partner headed down to deluxe cafe at wisma atria to round off with some more desserts.

pitifully, the coffee machine was down at that point of time and we then settled on having the robious chai instead. This was good! reminiscent of the good ole himalayan and chai tea lattes which i constantly crave except tt it was more wholesome, more solid and definitely just as good.

we shared a slice of sweet pleasures which basically consists of chocolate ganache btw layers of hazelnut praline dacquoise with chocolate mousse. wat was interesting was the addition of fleur de sel tt added to the contrast and heightened the flavor of the chocolate. Even my non-dessert lover bf fell for the dessert. commenting tt it was similar to a giant ferrero rocher. On the other hand, i was blown away by the complexity and intensity of the cake's depth with every spoonful, each layer though telling a different story, melded together magical to form something spell binding and so tight tt it literally exploded within the cavities of your mouth.

think i'm hooked on this lovely. will definitely be back to sample the gargantuan sized eclairs in a multitude of unique flavors such as pistachio and lemon. *yumz*

a die die must try! (as they put it in makansutra)..

Chocolate oozing...

I must say that I sought out a dessert place from HGW website, and Deluxe was my choice for the afternoon, based on the previous recommendation and rating of 9.4.

I didnt know that Deluxe is under Bakerzin.

The pastries and desserts on display sure looked tantalising. The 3 of us shared a chocolate eclair, roulade espresso, warm chocolate cake, and I also succumbed to a macaron (coffee flavour).

The macaron (@ $1.50)was delightful, crispy yet full of flavour. Shall definitely try other flavours.

The eclair was a bit dry and disappointing honestly, I was under the impression that the eclairs were wonderful from the previous review.

The roulade espresso was manageable, I did like the coffee cream but my favourite has got to be the warm chocolate cake.

The ice-cream was really good, and I just loved the chocolate oozing out as we cut into the crust of the cake... I do have a soft spot for chocolate...

I thought the waitress was very helpful by suggesting that we take a free cappuccino if we paid by Citibank. Not often you get this kind of information delivered to you from the start when you order your food.

The place is kinda small, so not very good for large groups or big gatherings... Maximum 4 people, and they combine 2 tables for you.

Is that An Éclair or an éclair?...

First chanced upon this cozy hideout when it opened with minimal fanfare during the last quarter of 2007. Warm earth tones, plush banquettes & sleek Philippe Starck chairs set the elegant tone of the Deluxe café, but what made my heart skipped a beat were those multihued Pierre Herme/ Sadaharu Aoki-looking French invention they call éclairs, sitting pretty on the display shelf. Those little babies were so intricately bejeweled with such colors of style, I swore I had to get my hands on them. Besides the usual chocolate, these were the exotic éclairs only available at this newest Bakerzin outlet, with luscious fillings of caramel, coffee, raspberry with rose, lemon and pistachio flavors.

On my first official visit to Deluxe, I was there on a mission: to eat The Éclair ($4.50 as per ala carte). I don't remember when was the last time I had an éclair, the taste. I don't even remember if I actually forked out money to purchase an éclair before. But that yellow jewel was so calling out my name I just pointed to the lemon one and told the guy: I Am So Having This. I have a thing for anything lemon. But a lemon éclair? The novelty was simply too much for me to resist.

It was phenomenal. The interior of the soft moist choux pastry was bursting full of a mildly tangy lemon crème. One bite and I was hooked. None of the insides was spared from the luscious filling. What blew my mind was the citrusy coating atop the pastry. It was creamy, full-bodied, yet not at all cloying. Divine spelt here.

I was informed by the kind manageress (unlike those establishments - afore-mentioned in my previous reviews here, which strive to deprive their ill-informed patrons about their privileges of ongoing promotions) about a tea-time special set comprising a slice of cake/ pastry and any tea/coffee selection for a single price of $10.50. Now, this is definitely a good deal, as many would have known by now Bakerzin’s policy of ‘We Do Not Serve Ice Water’ policy and that their drinks do not exactly come cheap. I was pleasantly surprised even the gourmet tea ($7-$8 as per ala carte) was even included in this offer. With her kind recommendation, I ordered one I wasn’t even familiar with. Naturally, having an unexciting taste-bud and being a conventional eater, I couldn’t really take to its intrepid taste. Sensing my perplexed look of dismay, the kind manageress promptly handed me the menu for a change of beverage without me even requesting her to do so. This time I chose the lighter yet remarkable Maloom Black Tea. Still gourmet, but more acceptable for my palate. Happy.

What pleased me most from that visit was that I wasn’t even charged for the Gourmet (say Gaur-Mey!) Tea I had erroneously ordered in the beginning. Save for the embarrassment, I was impressed by the exemplary service of Bakerzin’s staff, the pampering I experienced for being such a baby. That was enough to warrant for a second visit. Or for many more to come.

The second visit to this café was after the exotic flavors of éclairs made a comeback after a brief hiatus during the Christmas festive season. I had to settle for the pistachio one then as my favorite lemon was unavailable. Nonetheless it didn’t disappoint. The pistachio hint in the crème wasn’t overpowering, was subtle yet settling. I was satiated.

Naturally, when I had to suggest a venue for girl-out tai-tai teatime banter, Deluxe was the instinctive choice. This time The Friend had the house signature homemade tagliatelle with bratwurst, olive oil and parmesan, accompanied by an iced mocha. The pasta contained copious amount of Italian sausage, which was quite unusual for cafés serving fares they don’t exactly specialize in. She commented the dish was very tasty with the right amount of seasoning, and light without the feeling of a carbo-overload. The drink was a pretty one too, with swirls of tantalizing chocolate sauce decorating the interior of the coffee glassware.

I had to relent to my sweet tooth and once again, relished in the comfort of my lemon éclair. My first sweet treat of 2008, and it gave me an orgasm all over again. The choux pastry was drier than usual on that New Year’s Day, but bits of lemon zest were unsuspectedly detected within the tangy lemon crème! They weren't there the last time I had it. I was so pleasantly surprised. There is nothing called enough sugars for me as I never seem to have any hangover from all that glucose breakdown.

I also ordered a common fare ice lemon tea ($4.80) from the menu as I didn’t want anymore of those hard-to-grapple sticky situations. I was relieved. There’s nothing I hate more than run of the mills off-the-faucet ice lemon tea slyly masquerading as ‘home-brewed’, and this Ice Lemon Tea wasn’t anything in that category. I half suspect they even use their Gourmet Teas for this. Thumbs up. During this visit I also (bleah.) ordered Evian water ($1.50/ 330ml), only because I needed another drink and The Friend and I didn’t wish to move our lazy feet. My only gripe here was that The Evian cost a little more than it is in the other Bakerzin outlets. But that’s the Luxe Luncheon. Oh well.

Suffice to say, all these is to highlight the exceptional service and first-class quality of food I receive on all my visits to this gem of a find. I would like to applaud Bakerzin’s management for their commitment to deliver customer satisfaction (absolutely passed my test!), existing to serve their indulgence and upholding the reputation of their premium products. I don’t need a celebration or a reason to indulge in their exquisite desserts. For others it is for comfort, but for me? Unparalleled yet unassuming service will thus be the deciding factor for my continuing patronage.
