Went fei feri wanton mee yesterday. They served quite a decent bowl of noodles. The noodles are thicker than usual and have the firm feel. Soup isn't too good.

I go to Fei Fei now and then. Its got its issues, but so do I, and we put up with one another. Firstly, its char siew is like the signal lights on Singapore cars - purely ornamental. It tastes like boiled pork with red colour slapped on for effect, and then sliced so thinly you worry when it's a draughty night.

The soup is a sorry concoction which tastes like an odd mix of vinegar, tastelessness and water. They might as well use plain water, frankly.

Unless you're one of the many losers who go there with their Vietnamese bar girl catch of the night for supper (only because you need to save money after blowing your entire week's pay on her), you come here for the springy chewy noodles. Some may come for the chilli, but I strictly insist on asking for it to be "white", which is fei-fei-speak for no chilli and no ketchup, but rather, with a soya sauce and oil base.

Sure, fei fei isnt the only place with the "queue" type of noodles, but the fact remains that most wanton mee stalls here still insist on using the inferior type of noodles. You know, that one which is dead on arrival. Flaccid, soggy, rag-like - you must be familiar with that. The other thing is that their wantons have this interesting taste that reminds me of luncheon meat. That, for me, is a good thing, but I can expect others to balk.

Oh yes, if you have an issue with short guys staring at you, you may wanna hop down to the other fei fei across the street instead, though that one closes much earlier. See, there's this chap there (vertically challenged as mentioned above) who has this knack of staring at people for no apparent reason. He sports that "armani haircut" which was quite the rage among schoolboys in the 90s, and has sadly not been told by anyone that denim cut-offs are soooooo 1991.

To be honest, he doesn't really stare, but just looks like he is (10 out of the 10 friends I've polled think he's staring, even though I'm pretty sure nobody can walk around staring at everything because the guy has the same expression all the time). I've deducted one point from the ambience grade because of him, and another because of the abovementioned losers with their vietnamese "friends".

I have tried here at Fei Fei as what that are rated here , and find nothing but disappointment . Firstly the noodle is soggy and the char siew are laser cut ( fantastic slim cut ).

I find Pontian Noodle better and can someone tell me where I can really find good wanton noodle .

    1. Franz Well, my 2cents worth says u shud try the following:

-Guangdong Wan Tan Mee @ Maxwell Mkt
      - Kok Kee @ Lavender food court...but prepare to seriously Q
      - The 2 wan tan mee stalss at old airport road ..first row facing Old Airport Road..cannot remeber the names though sorry

Been here for quite a few times . I have never failed to order a second round of noodles from them . The soup wanton is good , soup is tasty , wanton has just the right amount of meat filling in it which is delicious as well . The fried wantons are pretty oily but taste much better than the soup wantons in my opinion .

Noodles over at Fei Fei wanton is the thing that makes it special , the crunchiness of the noodle , it has this springy feel to it and it is not that oily , the noodle is the rather thick kind , not the tiny thin kind of wanton mee hence if you like thick noodles , this wanton mee you"ll definitely love it !

The ambience is good if you want to have some time with memory lane , as it is really old school , it can get pretty stuffy at times , but overall it is fine .

Value for $$ ? Definitely it is !

If you are to pick a random person from the street and ask, “where’s the best wanton mee?“, chances are Feifei wanton mee at Joo Chiat will be mentioned. The legendary wanton mee stall from Joo Chiat.

The bowl of wanton mee arrived, with chilli all over the noodles, and that’s it. My friend gave me a nudge to stir the noodles from below and all the treasures were indeed hidden beaneath the noodles. The char siew wasn’t fantastic, it was decent, and the wanton was not bad. But it was the noodles and the chilli which deserved the recognition; the noodles were Q and simply bounced on my tongue, while the chilli was fiery hot, although I was sweating all over, but it’s worth the while!

Feifei doesn’t served roasted duck, this was ordered from another stall in the kopitiam.

Crisping on the surface, the roasted duck skin was bursting red, with a layer of fats sticking under it, was sinful, but a delight to have. They looked good, they smelled even better. I wolf the whole thing down, nibbling everything from the skin, the meat and the fats, chewing any leftovers that I spotted on the bones. I love roasted duck!

You are always welcome to visit ladyironchef for a full-up on this trip. Whatever written herein are my genuine feelings expressed in words. Food, my dear, is what they call an adventure!

It's a different mee that you'll seldom get outside... Thinker than the usual mee kia, doesn't taste so much of the common mee...

The blending of it's chillies and it's sauce (or is it somekind of oil) make a good combination out of it's mee.

The ingredients? Except for the vegetables, the wanton and charsiew both taste too salty. Ate the charsiew 1st, and it taste salty, ate the wanton, it's even saltier, and go back to the charsiew, you will not taste the saltishness anymore due to the wanton.

    Nice mee, but salty ingredient.

Portion for $2.50 although look small, but quite filling to me..

Hope to try the other stall of Fei Fei Wanton Mee soon...

I was like hur hur after eating this. At Fei Fei, the only special thing about their noodles is that it’s a little thicker like ramen, firm and have a special eggy taste served in a mix of just stock, pork lard oil, soya sauce and flavored with their own specially made chili which was also very oily.

Pork lard & msg. This is their magic potion which makes their regulars come running back for the noodles. But they seem to be too heavy-handed with msg because I was feeling so thirsty after the WTM ($2.50). The 2 wantons are really pathetic, yes only 2. Puny and wasn’t even tasty. And don’t get me started on the boiled (?!) char siew

The homemade chili sambal was nothing to shout about.

And Fei Fei is the only wanton mee stall in Singapore where you need to go to the stall-owner, empty bowl in hand, to beg for your soup. Fei Fei may be better than your regular bowl of wanton mee at any kopitiam but it most certainly didn’t wow me. Warning also: go during weekends and the wait for your WTM is like forever. There’s another 24 hr coffeeshop across the road from this original stall. Some say that one is better but I don’t know.

So to get over this abysmal WTM... just hop over to Kim Choo next door and get some nyonya kueh haha.

    3. Sihan Lee i so agree with you! they over do the pork lard in the noodles.. feels soo slick somehow. haha.
    4. ice yeah...slick or sick. I think it's sick... There's too much hyped about this wtm.
    5. Garfield Totally Agree. Bad Service + not so good food. Dunno why got lots of people keep going there. Must be addicted to their MSG. Should try the Eng Wanton Mee in the Dunman Food Court 2nd floor. The Chili got kick and the noodle so QQ.
    6. Weighty Man WTM does not taste good without the lard so it comes with the territory. It's the char siew that's great, just had it and it's still great but waited for like 45min as it was just being cooked.
    7. lala_gal i love fatty cheong type of char siew drizzle with black sauce on my wanton anytime however feifei's char siew kinda put me off even wanting to have a second visit.

i agree with you it's really nothing special.
    8. Ee I don't know what's the fanfare about either. * high5*
    9. Max Tan 660 the noodle is nice, but then.... hv to bear with their poor attitude. i went there twice and when i ordered my food, the owner gave a 'million dollar' face look, she did not even bother to nod her head...

Well, been eating this for almost 1 decade.

The wanton noodles here have undergone some changes over the years. I remember a few years back the noodles were the same as what they were now. And after that it changed. And now its back to its original form.

But anyway, I usually have my wanton noodles here with ketchup. I used to eat 2 bowls of this when I was in lower secondary.

If I remember correctly, the prices are $3, $4, $5. I just went there one and a half weeks ago but I can't remember. I ordered the biggest one. And it was still not really enough. But the servings are not as stingy as that at Kok Kee Wan Ton Mee.

    Overall, good wan ton mee.
But parking is definitely a problem here! Especially on weekends and public holidays.

    1. Weighty Man How can you have eaten it for decades when it opened up about a year and half ago at Yuhua? Perhaps you mistake it for the one with the same name at Joo Chiat.
    2. Weighty Man Mistake got it mixed up with the one at Jurong

Some say it's the wantons, some say it's the homemade noodles .... I would say it's the chilli, definitely! I started eating at fei fei about 20 years ago (and I'm still a young chick, no doubt!) at the old coffee shop across the road. Was surprised when they opened another store just across the road - but it tastes just as good and even better, it's in a bright, airy coffee shop and is open until late in the night. I always order the large portion of noodles and it's not just because I am greedy. You just can't get enough of this! In fact, I now use fei fei as my benchmark for all wanton mee .... "not nice, not at all like fei fei", "not bad, same style as fei fei", "quite good, almost as good as fei fei".

And in case you are wondering, it's not the kind of wanton mee that comes with a watery dark sauce and green chillis on the side (not at all like fei fei ... not good). The chilli sauce is the main ingredient (for those who don't take chilli, then why eat wanton mee??), mixed with homemade wantons, char siew and bouncy noodles. YUM!

    1. Weighty Man 20yr? They opened up last year. There is no coffee shop across the road, it is an set in an inside aisle and the food center faces a large empty field. I agree with you it's great - esp the char siew.
    2. Weighty Man Mistake, thought it was the one at Jurong

Brethren... Fei Fei wanton mee located at Joochiat ONLY. Not anywhere else to be mistaken with the same name. This is a MUST TRY for any self respecting Wanton Mee connoisseur.

If you're like me, who gets utterly disgusted with the mere sight of wanton mee from food courts; specifically the kind of noodle tht looks and taste like rubberband and is semi-transparent from those "HONG KONG DELIGHTS" stalls! Then this is one of the places to go! The chilli is also right up my alley in considering this still "old skool" type wanton mee. Cheap as well. Quite fast. Amount per bowl you ask? Hard to say... a bowl of wanton mee frm any anywhere for me is nowhere close to a meal usually for me, but I guess its decent.

Obviously if you want it more older school... dunman road food centre's Seng's or Eng's is another review away!! woo!

Must tries: WANTON MEE / FRIED WANTONS

    1. The Food Critic Hey.. I can't stand some of the wan ton mee in some food courts too.

Some of them even taste bitter...

      ;)
