  1. This is my 2nd review of this wharf

    Oct 14, 2008
    I have to apologise.

I drove past and saw the prominene chalk board saying Catch of the Day - Atlantic Halibut. Set Lunch at 10.50 (with coleslaw and drink)

I parked my car and did the coupon.

Upon placoing my order, the expressionless cashiet told me that the Halibut is not ready and needs to de-frost.

I checked the opening hrs and understands it opens at 1130am, daily. I was placing my order at 1245pm.

I asked why wasnt there any preventive measure as this chalk board was freshly written and placed at the door step.

She couldnt explain. I paid for the $10.50 set lucnh and was given the Dory Fish (most common)

Whilst tucking in my food, I noticed that another couple walked in. This couple was like me. paid for their parking (coupon parking) and had no choice but to succumb to their gimmick.

They paid $10.50 and were given normal dory.

I walked to the cashier and asked why didnt they remove or at least "turn th chalk board" away.

She said the Halibut will be de-frosted pretty soon and there is no need for that!

I was sent to a Mathematics School to understand her logic behind that.

This happened to another pack of school friends who fell for it.

To make matters worse, the served normal Dory Fish was very very thick in batter (crust) and the slab of fish is very thin. Its completely diffrene tfrom what we used to eat, during the non-promotional dining time (ie. dinner time).

Dont know why were we served a thinner slice of fish when it was a cheaper set lunch we ordered?

I dont mind to pay more to enjoy the normal serving size.

Hope the sole proprietor would bother to step out to explain matters.

    • Great fish and chips!

      May 10, 2007
If ur looking for anything else other than fish and chips, u would be sorely disappointed at Fisherman's Wharf.

That's right, they only have fish and chips on their menu! However, as though to compensate, they do offer several different kinds of fish. One thing i love about this quaint eatery is that they differentiate between chips and fries. Definitely the chips for me!

We both ordered cream dory with chips ($6.50) which came in generous portions. Dimly lit and with a laid-back atmosphere, service is almost non-existent here as u have to make ur orders at the counter and have the expressionless faces of their staff staring back at u. Kinda irritating~

Fortunately the food made up for it. The batter was crispy and laced with a hint of pepper while its meat was moist and soft~ The chips easily won me over!

It's my first time eating my fish and chips the traditional way; with malt vinegar and salt. I thought it would have been awful, given my dislike for vinegar. However, it turned out well as the malt vinegar really brought out the taste of the fish! Sprinkle salt sparingly and tuck in!

I still like my tartar sauce though! Fisherman's Wharf's version was good!

Located jux opposite The Central along this row of shophouses (27 New Bridge Road)~
      Must Tries

      choose chips instead of fries!

      • FISH N CHIPS

        Sep 7, 2008
I just went there today. Was expecting something really good because a couple of my friends told me that the fish n chips are better than those at Fish n Co/ Manhattan but i'll have to beg to differ. I ordered the Halibut Fish n chips ( set lunch) and it smelt really bad so I'm guessing it wasn't fresh at all. It came with 2 pieces and i ate only half of one piece because the smell was really getting in the way. My sidekick ordered Snow fish and chips and it was so-so only. Wasn't impressed at all. I'd say the only thing that makes this place stand out from the rest would be the wide variety of fish to choose from, besides that, everything else's mediocre. The batter for the fish was a little tasteless and i think those at Long John Silver's taste much better. Fries = normal. Coleslaw = normal. Oh yeah, we also ordered some meatballs with jam ( Danish meatballs or something. I can't remember but it starts with a "D") and wasn't that great. It came together with mash potato which i thought was really tasteless. Don't their chefs even try the food?

Ambience wise not too bad but the seats smelt a little, they must be really old. They're cushion seats by the way and look quite dirty.

I wouldn't go back there even if it was to try something else because i don't like their batter. They're just going to use the same batter for all the other fish so no point in me trying the others, is there?

          • Great set lunch special

            Dec 22, 2009
Fisherman's Wharf has a great set lunch special for $10.50. Here's what you get:
+ fish - nice chunk of white fish, with the right amount of batter. Comes with tartar sauce, and other condiments on the table
+ coleslaw - a decent serving, really just a few mouthfuls
+ chips or fries - the fries are definitely better than the mushy mess of chips
+ soft drink - a pretty full selection of Pepsi and Coke products

Overall the food was great, and pretty filling for the price. Another plus is the price already includes the service charge and tax. Thanks for that.

Only a couple of gripes, firstly the manager is a bit anal about moving tables around. The place was empty and we had a party of 10, just let us move things around and stop being a mindless robot. Secondly, they could have a couple of fans, the place was warm and makes it a bit uncomfortable.

            • Too many fish choices, expensive and not outstanding

              Nov 18, 2009
My hubby and I wanted to try Fishermen's Wharf since a long time because we drive past this place often.

So, one evening around the area, we decided to give it a shot.

When we got to the restaurant, there was no one to serve us. We didn't even know where to sit or what to order. The seats in the centre of the room were too small so we requested for the big tables.

They were initially very reluctant to let out the seats to us. The tables were all reserved. Their reason: There might be big groups coming and so they need to set aside the table. We insisted we wouldn't take too long. And just as we looked like we were giving up and going to leave, they decided to let out one table to us but not before reminding us that we may have to let up the table if there are many big groups.

It was also odd because many people walk into the restaurant. But they all went upstairs to some youth association. So, there were many times we wonder if we had to let up the seats soon.

Anyway, we took out the menu and looked through. They serve basically standard fish & chips - all using one batter. There was no grilled fish either, no breadcrumb selection and etc. But they had a wide variety of fish for the same batter. We decided to try the most expensive and the cheapest.

The fish and chips were served to us in a basket and mine (the most expensive) looked like mini battered buns. The chips were freshly cut potatoes, deep-fried. My hubby's was the cheapest and it looked like two big pieces of fish fillet. They were served with the same chips.

The taste test - both fish taste about the same. Honestly, with the same way of cooking, same batter, it is really not very different in terms of the fish. The potatoes tasted good when hot but when they became cold, they were dry and difficult to swallow.

We left this place unsatisfied although filled. And we felt that Swensen's Fish & Chips tasted better.

                Oct 20, 2009
The thing about this place is that the different fishes all look the same and you can't really tell the difference. Tastewise, there is a slight difference, but its not that great to justify the price difference. My advice: just order the cheapest one available, because it doesn't really make much of a difference in taste. Ambience wise it is open air and the decor is nothing to shout about. The fish itself is ok i guess but honestly not that spectacular to make me sit up and take notice.

                  Aug 26, 2009
Came here with a few friends on a Tuesday evening for dinner. We tried the sea bass, the atlantic halibut, the normal dory and the most pricey cod loin. well, nothing to rave about. the fish was alright, but not really worth the price. It should have been a little cheaper considering that for the sea bass, there was only 1 piece of fish. For the rest, the serving for fish was still passable. My poor buddy was left hungry as he had the sea bass. The chairs seemed that there weren't cleaned for a long time and 'felt' oily and dirty. the place is open air buy a little stuffy as the air was very still. nothing to rave about.

Fisherman's Wharf used to be good, but has gone really downhill. A couple of visits ago, the fish didn't taste fresh. Yesterday we got takeaway, and when we got home we found the chips were totally raw.

I don't know if they've changed the kitchen staff, or just aren't monitoring very well, but I wouldn't recommend this restaurant unless you're eating there, and don't mind sending food back if it's not right.

                      May 2, 2009
Tried the fish & chip here for lunch. The fish is rather fresh. I would say that the crust is a little too thick. Taste wise quite reasonable depending on the fish you choose. They have quite a number of fish to choose from and price varies. They do not have alot of variety to choose from their menu. Overall if you are looking for a quick lunch and dinner that offers decent fish, this might be the place. But do not have high expectation.

                        • Want go fishing?

                          Oct 12, 2008
Fishermen’s Wharf is located at Clarke Quay, just directly opposite the Central Mall. You definitely won’t have a problem finding that place (though currently it’s being blocked by the construction of a overhead bridge).

Looking at the menu, almost everything is fried (or is it everything?). We ordered dory fish with chips/fries (top photo) and also fried button mushrooms (bottom photo). I must say the serving size for the fish is relatively okay for $7.50. The fish is quite okay despite being terribly oily (kinds of freak me out a little). Originally we thought the chips would be potato chips (like you know, those snack kinds) but they aren’t. At first look, there’s not much visual difference between chips and fries, but the chips tasted more like real potatoes (like they peeled and cut REAL potatoes into strips then fried them). I prefer the chips actually but I guess it’s personal preference. The mushrooms were really juicy, but a little bit bland.

We ate there at around 3/4pm, kind of a weird timing but oh well. :p Fishermen’s Wharf is an open area - no air-conditioning - hence it probably would have been better if diners go there at night, else it’ll be pretty warm. I quite like the presentation as to how they serve the food in individual baskets - kind of cute. Overall the food is alright, though I would have preferred not to see a spread of gold colour - everything’s fried and fried and fried. I would welcome some coleslaw or some salad as accompaniment - at least some colour variation.

Nothing much can be said about the service as it’s self-service - you decide what you want to eat then go to the counter to order and pay. All they do is to serve it to you. Nothing much to rate.

Overall Fishermen’s Wharf is an average place to go if you are going for the quantity and is in love with all sort of fried stuff. I’ll probably go back and give the others a try, but right now, I'm going to grab some vegetables.
I also recommend this place for
