Walked by this place a few times and decided to check it out one day with my colleague.
It's a simple eating house, basically no frills self-service - you seat yourselves, go to the counter to place an order and the food gets brought to your table. My companion had the promo set of crayfish + prawn ipoh hor fun ($9.80 including a drink and small veg side dish) and wanting to sample their gourmet dumplings, I ordered a dumpling hor fun with a luo han guo drink. We also shared a small plate of soya chicken.
The drink was unimpressive despite its home-made labelled. The flat taste did not live up to its rich dark color and I'm not sure what temperature it was intended to be served. There were some slivers of ice floating on top, and the drink was somewhere between room temperature and cool.
Dish reviews were mixed. The sauce was well-balanced and had a pleasant flavour; we could detect faintly a whiff of herbs. Although smooth, the hor fun was slighly transparent and way too bouncy - giveaway signs of mass production? Half way through, my jaws got fatigued from the chewing... was tempted to slurp it down whole and let the stomach juices do the work. Dumplings were quite large and there were glimpses of prawn chunks; these were probably handmade. Taste was average; perhaps the kitchen staff have lighter palates.
My companion's promo set seemed like good value, and we brokered what I thought was a pretty good exchange: half a crayfish for one dumpling. Upon first bite, the crayfish was rather cold in comparison to our noodles/ sauce. I also got a taste of the residual steaming water - rather fishy *shudder*. My guess is it was cooked separately and left to sit for awhile, gathering liquid in the shell. Better stick to the chicken or dumpling hor fun...
They use bak choy as veggie at this establishment. Something different from other noodle house places. Personally not a particularly enjoyable veggie to eat; again the oyster sauce was quite meagre.
Soya chicken was alright. Was expecting something with more soy sauce, it looked more like a greasy roast chicken. Can prob get better chicken elsewhere.
All in, its a more comfortable joint than Maxwell Hawker Ctr and probably on the lower end of the restaurants along Maxwell Chambers... but I won't be going out of my way to eat here. Know of any other good ipoh hor fun place in Singapore?
