I certainly miss the old Funan Weng that was back at Ghim Moh Market which it was serving tasting, savoury chicken and prawn ipoh hor fun at only $2.50

Now that Funan Weng has followed Lee Tong Kee and got upgraded to a nice cosy corner at Maxwell chambers.  It even has a nice children's corner so that you can let your child play while you eat.

While the taste hasn't changed much, the cost has.  More nicely presented, a bowl of Prawn and chicken hor fun now costs $5.80.  A personal set with slightly more chicken, vegetables and 2 dumplings costs $8.00.

Would I recommend the place?  It depends. If you are looking for a child friendly or air con environment, i will recommend it.  If you are looking for value for money ipoh hor fun within 1km, I would suggest you try the crayfish ipoh horfun at Hong Lim.

    Must tries: ipoh hor fun

I had the chance to taste some history recently at Funan Weng. Continuing the tradition three generations on, the family has since "upgraded" into an air-conditioned setting at Maxwell, yet still keeping the tradition of serving good quality Ipoh hor Fun at non-excessive prices.

I had the opportunity recently to try out the signature Ipoh hor Fun here and I can see why this would be a hit for Ipoh hor fun lovers. The broth is thicker than most places with a slight herbal tinge that makes this dish a tasty bite. This has to be one of the better Ipoh hor Fun places around.

As for the side dishes, while the fried dumplings did not stand, the boiled soup dumplings are worth a try. Stuffed with minced pork and an entire shrimp per dumpling, a bowl of that dish can be quite filling.

Prices are reasonable. One can get a Ipoh hor fun with a side bowl of dumpling soup for less than $10. Now that's a steal.

    Must tries: Ipoh hor fun

Walked by this place a few times and decided to check it out one day with my colleague.

It's a simple eating house, basically no frills self-service - you seat yourselves, go to the counter to place an order and the food gets brought to your table.  My companion had the promo set of crayfish + prawn ipoh hor fun ($9.80 including a drink and small veg side dish) and wanting to sample their gourmet dumplings, I ordered a dumpling hor fun with a luo han guo drink. We also shared a small plate of soya chicken.

The drink was unimpressive despite its home-made labelled.  The flat taste did not live up to its rich dark color and I'm not sure what temperature it was intended to be served.  There were some slivers of ice floating on top, and the drink was somewhere between room temperature and cool.

Dish reviews were mixed.  The sauce was well-balanced and had a pleasant flavour; we could detect faintly a whiff of herbs.  Although smooth, the hor fun was slighly transparent and way too bouncy  - giveaway signs of mass production?  Half way through, my jaws got fatigued from the chewing... was tempted to slurp it down whole and let the stomach juices do the work. Dumplings were quite large and there were glimpses of prawn chunks; these were probably handmade.  Taste was average; perhaps the kitchen staff have lighter palates.

My companion's promo set seemed like good value, and we brokered what I thought was a pretty good exchange: half a crayfish for one dumpling.  Upon first bite, the crayfish was rather cold in comparison to our noodles/ sauce. I also got a taste of the residual steaming water - rather fishy *shudder*. My guess is it was cooked separately and left to sit for awhile, gathering liquid in the shell.  Better stick to the chicken or dumpling hor fun...

They use bak choy as veggie at this establishment.  Something different from other noodle house places.  Personally not a particularly enjoyable veggie to eat; again the oyster sauce was quite meagre.

Soya chicken was alright.  Was expecting something with more soy sauce, it looked more like a greasy roast chicken.  Can prob get better chicken elsewhere.

All in, its a more comfortable joint than Maxwell Hawker Ctr and probably on the lower end of the restaurants along Maxwell Chambers... but I won't be going out of my way to eat here. Know of any other good ipoh hor fun place in Singapore?

Heard so much about this new Hor fun place at Tanjung Pagar. I am not one of those oldies who know them from Ghim Moh market. But try anyway lor since all my other lunch kakis want to go. Ok lar, my verdict is worth trying. I order the Char Siew & Wanton hor fun. That tasted very good. But their signature Prawn with hor fun very ordinary only. One of my other friend tried the beef brisket one.....wah lau, so salty. I think the best is their dumpling. So big and tasty. Value-wise, I think very reasonable la. Serving generous and not too expensive. So I rate very good value. Ambience, no much....looks like a food court. But then my friend say, this already improvement lei....they used to be at hawker centre! Must go order yourself at counter. Other than that, service quite ok too.

    Must tries: Gourmet Dumpling

Wanted to catch up with an old friend who works in the Tanjong Pagar and decided that we should try Funan Weng - given that I really enjoyed their hor fun when they were still located at the Ghim Moh market.

I had the char siew noodles and I would say that the standard of the food is still as good as ever. It is also at foodcourt prices and the portions are very generous. The servers are also very polite and provided very good service.

This is a wonderful place for lunch and I would certainly recommend Funan Weng strongly to all you hungry people out there!

Funan Weng has a long history since the 1950s. Over the past 20 years, Funan Weng has evolved to perfect the recipe for their famous Ipoh Hor Fun. Located amidst the bustling business district, this restaurant serves to provide affordable and delicious Ipoh Hor Fun in a comfortable setting for all!

We had the Signature Chicken & Prawn Ipoh Hor Fun ($5.80). The ipoh hor fun was smooth and silky. So slippery that it slithered down our throats effortlessly.

Topped with generous amounts of prawns and boiled chicken, this portion is sufficient to keep one full and satisfied. Gravy was savoury and flavorsome. However, don't be deceived by the number of prawns in the photos! They actually sliced the prawns into halves. The prawns were also not as crunchy and sweet as we would love them to be.

    A & J's rating: 4/5

Affordable and delicious Ipoh Hor Fun at such homely restaurant, it is certainly worth a try!

I am not bias. I have tried all the hor fun within Tanjong Pagar/Chinatown/Hong Lim area. Funan Weng have my vote and the best time to visit them is Saturday. It is not so crowded. I can enjoy the signature hor fun with dumpling soup leisurely.

Street Hawker Ipoh Hor Fun goes upmarket

Funan Weng has decades-long history since the 1950s at Hock Lam Street to Capital Cinema, Funan Centre, Ghim Moh Market and eventually located at Maxwell Chambers.

I was craving for some noodles and my friend mentioned about a pretty good HorFun around the corner at Maxwell Chambers.

I’m pretty sure i had this before at Ghim Moh Market. Little did i expect that that their Street Hawker Fare – Horfun had went upmarket and shifted to a Shop at Maxwell Chambers. (Maxwell chambers, just beside Red Dot Museum, is strategic located near Tanjong Pagar MRT).

    We had their Speciality -

Ipoh Horfun with Prawns and Shredded Chicken ($5.80).

I’m not a huge big fan of Horfun but i knew that if i managed to slurp finish every single bit of a plate of Hor Fun, there must be something different about it.

I have to give credits to their Shredded chicken breast meat. I usually opt for Thigh meat and avoid the breast meat at all cost but i was surprised that their shredded chicken breast meat was tender and juicy. It’s totally different from the usual tough breast meat. The shredded chicken definitely complements their silky Hor Fun. Also, the sauce wasn’t too sticky or gelard as well. As a whole, it’s a good decent plate that i enjoyed.

Funan Weng also serves a variety of other dishes – Beef Brisket Noodles, Gourmet Dumplings, Char Siew and Wanton Ipoh Hor fun.

Air Conditioned place, decent good lunch fare, NO GST and Service Charge! It’s going into our list of lunch places around our work place.

If you work around this area, and you are willing to fork $1 more for the air-conditioned environment and a good plate of horfun, it's a good place to go for lunch. :)
