Fantastic Coffee and great value Buffet for money

I walked past this place many times and did not know it was until I saw the TV ad. It was a great place. The place was so crowded. Saw quite a bit of family which did not seemed to be working in town and made an effort to come all the way down for lunch. Saw that the service crew was a bit challenged to keep up with the hungry throngs but unfazed. The buffet was really cheap with so much to offer for so little at such a time like this when everything else is going up. As a gourmet Illy coffee fan, I ordered one though I had to pay extra for it as it was not included in the buffet. Verdict, the coffee ROCKS! Especially the Cappuccino! Beautifully prepared despite the rush that hit the restaurant. Not at tinge of bitterness even without adding sugar.

Ambience is a bit noisy, but hey, what can you expect for a bargain. Love the buzz!!!

I brought my laptop along, and found out they provide special power plugs right next to where I was sitting. Now I can eat and surf all I want the whole day without worry that the battery runs flat! I also noticed that the download speed quite fast! Fantastic cafe place! Definitely a boon for the road warrior!

Must Tries: Cappuccinos and Cafe Lattes with beautiful free pour flowers on it. Best and cheapest salad buffet and go for the laksa!

Geeked-Out!

This place turned out to be a major let-down. We decided to try it out after watching an episode of a local programme.

We went at noon to try out the TV-touted buffet. The waiter who greeted us first insisted we sit at the front of the restaurant with deep cushioned seats, claiming the inner buffet area was full and "reserved". He only relented when we pointed to the inside of the restaurant and showing him how EMPTY it was. After plonking down the ala carte menus, he not only neglected to mention the available buffet, he mumbled some unintelligible words, disappeared and never returned to take our order. We had to flag down a china-national waitress who unfortunately had to have every word repeated to her twice before she could understand what we were saying.

As the lunch hour warmed up, so did the noise level and inconsiderate behaviour of other patrons who jostled for the buffet spread. All of which were further aggravated by the lousy queuing system which made the food selection a frustrating experience.

The food quality was below expectations, quantity and spread not great for a buffet. The laksa station was a nightmare. The coffee was watered down.

What complete the poor dining experience was the loud noise accompanying patrons who "combined" tables, started to take photographs, moved around the room - behaving as if it was old-fashioned chinese restaurant serving tim sum or at wedding dinner functions.

When the bill came, it was incorrectly tallied. The unsmiling staff took forever to return with the corrected invoice and my credit card

What else can I say? The food was value-not-for-money. The ambience was atrocious. The service was truly without-a smile.

We r not geeks!! haha...

If i'm not wrong this geek terminal is opened by alpha geeks who wana get a group of geeks together to take over e world!! Wahaha..juz kidding! do expect more geek-related jokes/puns/comments in future reviews coz.. well actually we r all pretty geeky too! ;p

It's quite a surprise to find a Geek dining joint in e middle of e biz district (on market street no less)and even more surprising to find tat it serve a buffet lunch! it's not a full buffet but rather an assortment of cold cuts n salads n breads n soups n desserts and a hot item eg laksa...all at $13.90++..

The food ain't spectacular but it's decent enough... i do like e laksa though...there's prawns n fishcakes n eggs n beansprouts (yuks!) although u gona cook e noodles on ur own.. not so fun if it's crowded.. e laksa gravy rivals any coffeeshop ones so no worries there..but i tink this item changes on a daily basis...

e cold cuts r like ham n cheese n smoked salmon while soup is mushroom soup n salads eg pasta salad tanghoon salad etc with a variety of breads to toast.. do not miss out items on e walls as there's dessert like choc cakes coffee cheesecake choc mousse jellies etc.. e desserts like e cakes r pretty tasty n yum although e rest of e items r pretty fogettable fare...

it's quite a lovely place to have lunch..away from e hustle n bustle of e lunch crowd at a fairly decent px.. however there's really nothing much on offer and one hugh grump is tat e re-fills r too little n too few.. e quantity seems not proportional to e crowd and e frequency has room for improvement.. becoz of tat e buffet spread looks sparse n empty and items r like shooting stars.. once u missed it tat's it... i tink if u sincerely wana do a buffet .. make sure there's food on e table!

Must Tries: laksa

I agree, slow indeed

My farewell lunch, and a big group of 30 of us came to this place. Only 2 of my colleagues came previously for coffee and they recommended it for lunch. As our group was large, we faxed our orders over the day before.

When we arrived at 1230h, the manager showed us the list of courses we ordered and asked us to check off our orders, as well as asked us whether we wanted our food served (we arrived in several groups). We asked whether the food will arrive soon as some of us needed to rush back to office for meetings, and the manager said "Don't worry, the food has already been prepared." so we asked him to proceed. Those who ordered the salad buffet went off to get their food. At 1315h, the first dishes finally arrived, and guess what, it was the more difficult dishes like fish and chips. Are sandwiches so hard to prepare? The last person to get her mains got hers at an amazing 1345h. SEVENTY-FIVE minutes for a sandwich? Did they have it airflown from somewhere?? Why did we even go through the hassle of collating and faxing our orders the day before? I felt so sorry for my starving colleagues.

To pacify us, the manager said he would serve complementary coffee/tea to all of us. Heh, tea, which is just a tea-bag + water, came after those who ordered coffee finished theirs. Something is very wrong with the sequence of cooking in the kitchen. Its not like the food they prepared was out of this world. Sorry, not stepping in here again.

Fantabulous Buffet!

I was simply bowled over when I walked past this place one day and saw that they had a lunchtime buffet that went for only $8 nett (I think its nett - cos my lunch partner treated me that day!). This had to be therefore the cheapest buffet in the whole of the CBD on a weekday!

The staff there explained to me how this worked. For $8, you get access to buffet section 1. There, there was an array of salads (with cold meats given - i.e. chicken, tuna etc) + 2 types of soup (it was mushroom soup and minestrone soup when I was there) + an array of breads that you could add their garlic butter on, toast it, and it becomes garlic bread!

Now if the above was not enough for you, you could add another $8, and you would get access right away to buffet section 2, in addition to buffet section 1, where there would be about 6-8 hot food dishes. It ranged from salsa chicken to dory fish in mushroom cream sauce to spaghatti bolognaise etc etc.....

Being curious and really hungry that day, I went for the full buffet option (section 1 and 2) although I did observe many people happily being satisfied taking up the $8 option only. In fact, my lunch partner took up that option and he reported that the quality of buffet section 1 was good! I did try that as well and yes, the garlic bread (after toasting it) is indeed excellent, and the mushroom soup was thick and filled with mushrooms. A good intro I must say!

Moving on to the hot food section (buffet section 2), I must say the quality of the food surprised me as well and I just could not stop eating the fish and the chicken and the buttered rice and the bolognaise sauce! (see photos)

I had reservations when I first heard saw how competitively priced this lunchtime buffet was, but I was proved wrong when I went through the buffet. What's remarkable is that a simple one dish meal in the CBD area can easily easily set you back by $8-$10. But somehow, they managed to bring the price down here to $8 per buffet (or $16 if you take buffet section 2 as well), where you can have all the good quality mushroom soup and breads and salads you want for just 8 measly bucks! Service was decent and they took quite good care of us. And I quite liked the Geek ambiance actually! Saw quite a few people working off their laptops there and you could put your laptop cover in this nice opening below the table.

I think this lunchtime buffet is gonna be a winner if they can keep the quality up, and yes, I will be back. In fact, I better go back again soon before all you hungry HungryGoWhere people rush there!
