Home-cooked meals away from home

My favourite dishes have got to be the Kyoto Pork Ribs 京都排骨, Claypot Chicken with Ginger and Sesame Oil 姜丝麻油鸡, and Buttered Salted Egg Yolk Crab 奶油咸蛋黄螃蟹.

Wash it all down with a nice cup of Ice Lemon Honey Tea makes everything much more perfect!

The Kyoto pork ribs ($20), served lit on fire on a hot plate. The rib meat is soft, coated in slightly tangy sauce. Give this, and the seafood bergedil-like Auntie's signature homemade bean curd ($15) a try. Service at this Sennett Estate restaurant is helpful and lightning-fast. Skip the har cheong gai ($12) - it's too moist and it's made with too little prawn paste.

Excellent homely restaurant with friendly service and quality food

The service is always so warm and we love the homely feel, everyone just feels like family.  Food is always so fresh, generous and delicioius.  Love the Assam Fish Head which is not too heavy and actually very appetising with its sourness and spiciness, which I absolutely like along with generous servings of vegetables.  The crabs are always served in huge size with lot so juicy meat!  Worth the money as the portion is large.  Soups are really nice and healthy.  What I also like is there is also a good selection of vegetables which I must have in any meals.  Yuan Yang Kai Lan and Crispy BeanJal are our hot favourite every time we visit. Whether it is a family outing, or for business meetings / discussions over a meal, Gu Ma Jia is a cozy and comfortable place to dine.  We booked the place for Mothers' Day where all our relatives of about 60pax came and they were all very happy!  Will be back for sure!

Go for the salted egg prawns

Thoroughly enjoyed the salted egg prawns (very fresh prawns) and the yinyang kailan. Iced honey lemon tea is highly recommended - delicious! Felt thirsty after the meal though so not sure if MSG was used. Shall return another time to give it another go.

The feeling of "home" does not just come from the food!

Love the warm, affable service from Gu Ma herself and her crew at the restaurant. The feeling of "home" does not just come from the food, its equally evident in their service! Love the assam fish head, butter egg yolk crabs, yin yang kalian most! Read the full review on my blog - http://cherieladie.com/2014/03/03/gu-ma-jia-food-pot-food-review/

For full review with photos, please visit: http://myfrozenreminiscence.blogspot.sg/2014/01/gu-ma-jia.html   For those who are celebrating early - Gu Ma Jia is offering 10% discount until 29 January when you dine in at the restaurant.    For those who are still deciding where to have your CNY reunion lunch/dinner on 30 January (Thursday) - Gu Ma Jia has CNY 2014 Set Menu Promotions with four timings to choose from: 12.00 pm – 2.00 pm, 2.15pm – 4.15pm, 6.00 pm – 7.45 pm, and 8.00pm – 9.45 pm.    The restaurant will be closed on 31 January (Friday) and 1 February (Saturday) but operations will resume on 2 February (Sunday) - a great day to makan before starting work on Monday, if you have to work on Monday.   Gu Ma Jia is famously known for its signature dish - Assam Fish Head ($28). Many bloggers have praised the delicacy and even celebrities have visited the restaurant to have a taste of this delicious dish. YES! I bet you can finish two bowls of rice with just the gravy. The gravy wins hands down by having the balance of 4S. It was sweet, spicy, savory and sour.    The sweetness of the gravy was very "fishy"... in a good way! I later found out that the natural sweetness of the gravy came from the fish! The fish was cooked in the gravy to perfection with its meat still moist and tender. (FYI: Many places steam the fish head and then pour the gravy over it.) *Apologies for the absence of photograph.   Some people travel all the way here just for its Assam Fish Head. But Gu Ma Jia offers many other good delicious dishes.   For full review with photos, please visit: http://myfrozenreminiscence.blogspot.sg/2014/01/gu-ma-jia.html
