I just decided randomly to have brunch here this rainy saturday morning... And was pleasantly surprised! :) The $5.50 continental breakfast is really worth it! :) And the service is good...
I had scrambled eggs with ham and a coffee... It came with 2 slices of butter toast and some salad (salad greens with cherry tomato). The toast was genuinely the nicest I'd ever eaten, I'm not sure why, but it was perfectly toasted, still warm, pleasantly brown, and that and the butter was a heavenly match. See, I don't have very cheem tastes, just do the basics well n you've hit the home run :) The scrambled eggs were yummy too, just the write amount (though I was very full by the end), fluffy and yellow and not too watery or buttery. Don't know why I kept taste a slight garlic taste in the eggs, toast and salad, but it was just a hint and pleasant :) The ham was also good, the ingredients tasted fresh and good-quality throughout, so obviously it wasn't cheap thin generic picnic ham, but it tasted like real meat, just thick enough, and fresh (: Can't get enough of fresh meat... :)
The salad was a decent portion, greens n a cherry tomato drizzled with olive oil and something slightly savoury and sweet, fresh and I gobbled it all up. Coffee was alright, a little too watery and bitter. But the service was good :) It was only one guy serving the entire place. Granted it's a small place (they just renovated too, so it feels nice & new (:), but he has to cook, clear tables, take orders at the cashier... They overworking him ah :P But he did a superb job, my breakfast came quite fast (and well done, as you've seen from the previous paragraph) and he's really efficiently going round cleaning the tables and taking new orders, like a worker ant... So i say, more people should come to Haato (for their also v good ice-cream :)), and make him even busier! :P
All in all, $5.50 for a big plate of eggs, ham/sausage, toast, salad n coffee(/tea/milo/ice tea) is satisfying and super worth it :)
Haato is an ice-cream joint I often venture to. They sell a wide variety of gelatos and sorbets (though I would prefer to refer to them as sherbets). They also sell a small variety of italian selections.
WILDBERRY: Mediocre. The ice cream has a undesirable watery aftertaste
CHOCOLATE: An average rendition of the classic flavor.
CHOCOLATE BANANA: The taste of this one is rather nice, like a chocolate banana cake. The texture is quite weird and is a flaw of this variety.
MILK: Weird but bold.
CHOCOLATE MINT: A refreshing variant. The chocolate flavours are well balanced out in this variation of the classic.
I would prefer to refer to them as sherbets due to their extremely icy texture, almost like shaved ice. They are the stars of the Haato show.
YUZU: A classic family favorite, refreshing and flavorful. However, it is tad artificial.
PASSIONFRUIT: This one has a good flavor, though not the best around.
LYCHEE: This one is amazing and is interspersed with small chunks of dried lychee. Abit watery, but spectacular still.
SEAFOOD BAKED RICE: Almost disgusting. Avoid this. It taste quite bad.
SEAFOOD PIZZA: Unremarkable.
CHEESE TOAST: Delicious. The cheese smell can get nauseating, but only detracts this dish slightly.
Service wise, this place is extremely warm. I would definitely reccomend this store.
Haato at Thomson Plaza provides me with a good gelato fix whenever I crave for something cold at home.
The "green tea with azuki beans" had a strong matcha flavour and it was a bittersweet flavour that will send nods to all matcha lovers.
My most favourite flavour is the " sweet potato with honey and chestnut"! It was an unusual flavour that I've never tasted before.
If you ever get to try a combination of these two flavours together, this infusion of green tea and sweet potato, it is superbly delish!
The best gelato fix you can get at Upper Thomson :D
