| Room for improvement
Was looking for something to eat in the area before my Thursday night class. Stumbled upon this place on what must have been their opening day (there were all those congratulatory flower thingies at the entrance).
Ordered a Pork Katsu Don Set and a Maguro Sashimi. The Don was ok, but the rice tasted a little "powdery", kindof like the undercooked taste, but not crunchy. Maybe they need a little time to get their settings right again after their move. The sashimi was good, but not outstanding.
It was opening day so they had people at the door soliciting business. Service was good and friendly. Spent $24 for two.
Good place to chill out. Nice ambience, but I hope their food improves. |

| mediocre japanese food
It's cheap as all heck with massive portions. They have your standard teriyaki, bowls, simple sushi, the standard appetizers such as gyoza, and soft drinks. Is it good? Not really, in the grand scheme of things, but it will fill your need for the comfort food you miss from growing up near the mall that had that Japanese food stall where you could get heavy, glistening teriyaki from a friendly Japanese woman. Like said establishments, the chicken here tends to be dry, and the flavors are quite standard and unsubtle.
I'm a food snob, but I'm not a price snob. I know some cheap places that have four or five star food; this is not one of them.
If you enjoy eating mediocre standard Japanese food, then this one is for you. The odd thing is that I will probably be back here at some point. |

| No frills Japanese food
Been working at Raffles Place for over 2 years and CS has been one of my regular lunch haunts but I've never tried Hachi Tei before. Guess the thought never occured to me.
So having read the reviews here, I thought I must give it a try. And I went with a few of my ex colleagues and all of us ate here.
I had the katsudon ($4.50) and salmon sashimi ($7). I think it was good value. The katsudon wasn't the best I've tasted but for the price, I would say it's pretty decent. I think for them to improve, they can perhaps improvise on the white rice... make it a little more sticky like the authentic Jap rice? But that will cost more and probably they will up the price to $5.50... i digress.
The sashimi was very fresh. I liked it alot. 7 slices for $7 is quite affordable. I love fish...
My friends - one had a unagi set, forgot how much it costs, i think it was just under $10 and the unagi was one huge slice. Very generous.
My two other friends had chicken teriyaki don ($5) which they commented was just average.
Other than that, service was excellent and the lady boss (also the one taking orders and serving) had exceptional memory and was very polite. |

| I love this place
Probably the best value Jap food place in Singapore. Has a very friendly mom and pop set up and will go at lengths to make you happy. Many food to try here... just ask the proprietors and they'll show you the way.. Have fun exploring the unprinted menu.. I did :-D |

| Food court pricing, food court quality
Have been trying to find a value for money Jap restaurant as an alternative to Wasabei Tei. (Wasabei Tei is located at Far East Shopping center)
Having read the good reviews on Hatchi Tei and also because it was recommended by an acquaintance, I decided to give it a try. Understand from the reviews that this stall is usually packed during lunch hour and hence I was there on a Friday night with my boyfriend. (Kinda felt like a loser eating at a food court in RAFFLES PLACE on a FRIDAY NIGHT.)
We ordered a unagi and saba (grill mackaral) set meal. In addition, we also ordered a salmon sashimi. To be honest, I was pretty disappointed with the quality of the food.
The salmon sashimi was too soft and did not taste very fresh. There were supposed to be 7 pieces of salmon. However, you will find that there are more than 7 pieces! This is because the salmon did not come in one complete piece. Instead, two small pieces were combined to make up one piece. In short, the cutting was bad.
My boyfriend had the saba set. This is his favourite and he never fail to order this each time we are at a Jap restaurant. Did not have to wait for long and his food was served. The saba was quite nicely grilled and pretty juicy. The only complain that we have with the saba meal was that the fish was really small. (Well, I guess you can’t be expecting too much especially when you are only paying $6 for this set meal.)
Mine was the unagi set meal. Similar to the saba set meal, the size of the fish was pretty small. In addition, it would be better if the sauce on the fish was slightly sweeter. In my opinion, I still prefer the unagi set meal at Wasabei Tei.
Despite the quality of the food, we still enjoyed our dinner that night. The lady boss was really friendly and always had a smile on her face. What I found remarkable was that, she actually turned customers away when she knows that the customer had to wait for a long time before the food can be serve. Applause for her great attitude!
Maybe our expectations were too high and hence were a little disappointed when it falls short of the good reviews. Nonetheless, it’s still worthwhile to patronize this shop if you are in need of a quick Jap food fix. |
