| korean siao (crazy) me
I love kimchi and most things "K"...oooohh esp korean comedy drama. Latest craze is watching the drama "Hello my Lady" on ch55 on sunday and re-runs on sat afternoon, cause it has my dream korean gal thats pretty, natural and funny!! well I am not a dreamer for nothing. hahaha...
Anyway, Square2 at novena is frequented by me, for korean stuffs and having a few friends working in the area and being near u.d.d.e.r.s icecream. Oh! udders has a new caramel flavour that I like as it taste like butterscotch to me, YUUUUMMMMY...oops getting back to Hansang.
Over 2 trips i had the daily lunch special ginseng chicken set , hotpot set and the Korean chinese zha jiang mien. Each costing about 15-16bucks with GST.
The ginseng chicken meat is pretty tasteless but the soup is pretty thick and flavouful which I like! Of course there are better ginseng chicken around but not at 15bucks.
The hotpot was nothing like the picture but fortunately it is also pretty tasty and I like the noodles in the hot pot, springy and tasty.
Zha jiang mien is not the best (yes, the search continues) but good enough. Pretty flavourful with heaps of potatos, and some meat in the black sauce.
All dishes comes with a starter plate of spicy ikan belis, potato, and something that i don't remember; side dishes of kimchi and yellow radish; set meals gets a bowl of rice too.
Not much of an ambience, as its an open concept which reminds me of a food court. Service is normal.
Though not the best korean eatery, i definitely will be back as I find the sets value for money and they have my favourite zha jiang mien too. |

| Great Intro to REAL Korean cuisine!
I've never been one to enjoy Korean food - not after all the bad experiences with the food court version. So, when Mum suggested we try the food there, you can imagine my initial resistance!
It wasn't too difficult looking for the place. Located on the 3rd floor, half of the restaurant's sitting area overlooked Square2's atrium, giving the place a nice 'open-air' feel.
"Skeptical me" ordered a stone pot rice with chilli marinated chicken ($16) from the menu and Mum ordered the "Ginseng Chicken" daily lunch set ($15++) which included half a chicken, rice, many appetisers, dessert and coffee. I must say that the Ginseng chicken lunch set was really worth every penny.
So our food came and I SO REGRETTED not ordering the ginseng chicken set as the taste of the soup was EXCELLENT bordering on EXQUISITE. It had a earthy homey taste that erased any doubts that THIS WAS A QUALITY SOUP!
My chilli chicken with stone pot rice was quite an experience too! Who knew that Koreans ate such spicy food? Despite my running sinus, I continued eating the spicy meat as the taste of the meat was so well-rounded and never offensively sharp.
Oh...and don't get me started on the rice. The steamed rice that was served just reeked of QUALITY! Each short grain was so plump and tasty that I reckon I could have just eaten that without the accompliment of the spicy chicken.
According to Mrs Son (restaurant owner), the menu reflects the commonly eaten "home food" cooked with the same loving, caring attitude as a mother would prepare for her children.
------------------------
So, after that experience, I returned the next day to order MY OWN ginseng chicken soup set. Like the previous day, every spoonful of the soup was thick with ginseng chicken goodness. Just thinking about it makes me salivate.
This time, Mum ordered a SSAM Bab where one is served with individually portioned vegetable, rice and choice of meat, and then required to use one's hands to stuff that nicely packed rice/veg/meat packet into one's mouth - daintily, if possible.
What can I say??? I'm definitely going back...and looking for Korean friends to take me around in Korea to make up for all the time I ignored this wonderful cuisine. |

| Samgya Tang Set
I was with my husband yesterday night at Hangsang at about 8pm. The restaurant was quite full. There was noboby at the reception but the Korean head chef show us to our table which was a small table. We wait for 10 mins until somebody came with the menu. We make quick selection and order the Samgya Tang(Ginseng Chicken) set which cost $55.00 before service tax and GST for two person. They set consist of 10 side starter dish, potato salad, korean omelet, bulgogi beef(you can select beef, pork or chicken),ginseng chicken soup, rice and coffee or tea. The food came very fast and they give you the starter and main course at one go and our small table was fully packed with food. What disappoint us that they even bring you to coffee together with the food. It seem that we are in a fast food joint. Anyway, the food is good but service is very poor. |

| Delicious food, decent service
Surprised to see rather low scores for this restaurant, was reading through the reviews, and saw that it was penalised for value?
Value wise, I actually thought this was cheaper than a couple of korean bbq i've tried elsewhere, so i think its only fair to compare like for like, and not how much your $ is stretched.
Three of us went and we spent about $120.
We had the marinated pork ($20), assorted beef ($55 for 2 pax) and the usual kimchi that comes along. The meat was very delicious and tender and flavourful.
The kimchi was good, and we kept asking for extra rounds, and the staff (or lady boss) was very prompt to offer, without any grumbles.
I find the drinks pricey though. $3/4 for a small cup of tea.
And there was a long queue while we went there and we had to wait. Now usually I judge the authencity of all these cuisines by seeing if there are any 'natives' in the restaurant. True enough, there were quite a number of Koreans (chefs, preparers) and Korean customers. |

| Hansang
I'm starting to get the hang of and digging these Korean places that serve the assortment of pickles and starters before the real food comes. It gives me something to work my mouth with apart from conversation and is much appreciated when you're hungry and waiting for the food to arrive. With only one other place in comparison from recent times, I've to say that Togi serves better of this pre-meal appetizers than Hansang (Square 2, #03-32 to 35/40 to 44). Service at this place on a quiet Sunday evening is snappy and polite. Snappy meant that things were done fast in case you were wondering. Also, this place serves a light Korean beer that goes by Hite which claims to be made from natural fresh water, thus providing a fresh taste. Wow! Lol. The reason that I don't visit Korean places often is because, the menu tends to look very similar to me most of the time and this limitation, perceived or real, gives me the impression that the food is generally same everywhere. Maybe I just haven't gotten to appreciate the subtleties of their cuisine. If such a word is applicable for that.
Also, the bulgogis are difficult to differentiate. Each one that I've had taste very similarly to one another and really, is that all there is to them. One can only have them for so often before you get weary of the taste and even though the ones here are noticeably better than what you can get from supposed Korean food stalls in the food courts, there doesn't seem to be much identifying factor to them apart from the fact that they are prepared better. What I found defining for Hansang is that, they do a very good beef rib soup, something which I've never really had before elsewhere. Despite its plain and uninteresting appearance, the soup comes flavorsome of the beef and having meat that slides off the bone easy is always a plus point for me. This comes recommended if you ever visit. The other definition for this restaurant comes from the rice which are steamed with some root vegetables. There was a slice of carrot, some sweet potato, a piece of pumpkin and interestingly a date served with the rice that stays piping hot up to the last mouthful.
