  1. Hibiki: An Hour of Mad Frenzy

    Apr 8, 2009
1 hour, 60 minutes , 3600 seconds. A full encircling of the minute hand around the clock, an almost lackadaisical process considered by many. But things just weren't the same. Not since we rested our tushies on the comfy sofas lining the modern lit restaurant. No, it ain't your typical laid-back lunch. This was a race for time... and one at the expense of our stomach linings.

I usually would condone the idea of a lunch constrained by time limits. Especially with the settings of an ala carte buffet. Owning the characteristics of any typical 'Kiasu' Singaporean, I suppose anyone would tend to over order in a bid to get back his/her money's worth. But with a clear warning from the kimono-clad maître d' that unfinished food will be charged to the bill according to ala-carte prices, we held back our reservations and seriously.. I mean seriously contemplated the menu.

Hibiki has began offering ala carte buffet lunch and dinner sets at $20.90++ and $26.90++ since a while back. I would guess that it was a move made, in order to grab a piece of action in the realm of executive and business dining. The push factors for me in contrary were, a reasonable price tag, an extensive menu and a hungry boyfriend kicking from his nagging cravings for Japanese cuisine. Now, who would deny that my visit is unjustifiable?

The meal started off with a pot of Genmai Cha ($5.00, unlimited refills). The tea, served as a great compliment to most of the other dishes later, as it had a cleansing yet refined undertone to it. This provided the drinker, a teasing of the taste buds via the roasted rice grains soaked with the tea leaves. A gem in my books definitely.

We had sashimi moriwase (salmon, maguro, tako and sweet prawns). All were excellent of course, most probably since it was a friday and fresh fish leaked into Japanese eateries on Thursday. With the thick, fatty cuts of fish tickling our sensitive taste buds. We were geared up for more! So on with the Ebi Tempura, Soft Shell Crab Temaki, California Maki, Yasai Tempura, Torinabe, Agedashi Tofu, Nankotsu Karaage, oh gosh.. was I blabbering?

How about a thumbs ups for all the better food items? The Soft Shell Crab Temaki was gorgeous.. with deep fried soft shell crab, still warm and crackly wrapped in japanese vinegar-ed rice, cucumber sticks and a devilish dab of mayonaise, this could have easily been one of the best I've ever eaten. No kidding... the assorted tempura was again nicely done with the batter being light and fluffy.

Food aside, one thing that grabbed my attention about the place, was its sophisticated touch of style. The use of heavy colors and modern furniture that spun a tale of modern meets chic. All was appeasing.. from the glass entrance to the leather couches, the glittery cutlery and the whimsical transparent tea pots. It created an atmosphere so endearing, so at ease that it made tucking into the fine cusine so much more pleasurable.

From the outdoor grill to the large section of sumiyaki items on the menu, one could generally make a sensible assumption that this was probably the restaurant's speciality. As such, I conceded and called for the Yakitori, Tsukune, Nasu Miso, Salmon and Tebasaki. The yakitori was acceptable; the tsukune bordered on tasteless; the salmon was excellent in terms of exection and spot on in the taste department, the salmon flesh possesing an amaingly sumptous texture almost like melting whip cream in the mouth; the Nasu miso (japanese eggplant with a generous slathering of miso paste) was definitely up my alley as the salty paste complimented the soft egg plant slices perfectly.

The other sides were served, and the circus act ensued with a mixed performance of arts and flaming fireworks on our palettes.

One argubly cunning dish would be the Nankotsu Karaage, well, if you didn't have a linguistic background in Japanese, You probably would not have a clue that this was essentially chicken cartilage. Darn it... and I though I could get some decent fried chicken here. *rofl* Worth trying if you are not irked by chicken 'spare parts'.

Worth commending, are the Agedashi tofu and Torinabe, the former as pictured above, had deep fried skin that essentially wasn't too gelatinous. As a result, the freshness of the tofu and the right seasonings came into play, boosting the dish from it's humble standings to something out of proportions in my ideals. Nearing the end of our meal, with the clocks ticking on us, our waitress set down the gargantuan pot of hot soup. A homely scent whiffed thru my nostrils, and before I knew it, my exhausted appetite was back up and running again. The soup, had an amazing clarity to it, the sweetness of the broth coupled with the essence of the chicken was indeniably comforting.

A quick time check revealed that it was already 2 40pm. Wait a minute? Isn't the restaurant supposed to close at 2 30? Surprisingly, there wasn't an ounce of anxiety in the air. The maitre d' returned a smile of assurance when I expressed my uneasiness at being the last table still seated within the inner compounds. With that, I kicked back my heels and slurped down my last spoonfuls of chicken broth. Rubbing my tummy in sheer satisfaction.

"You must have our yuzu jelly for dessert," the waitress behind us said.

Of course we had to have that. Yuzu lemons hail from Japan exclusively, tart in flavor, it closely resembles a grapefruit with overtones of Mandarin Orange. Rarely eaten as a fruit itself, Yuzu lemons are priced for its aromatic zest used to flavor desserts and garnish dishes. The Yuzu citrus jelly was the final and most dramatic curtain call I had ever encountered in a dessert of sorts. With jelly cubes filled with the tangy essence of the lemons and further studded with yuzu lemon rind, it made for a certain kind of flavor combustion. Paired with fresly granited ice shavings, it was indescribable. How an ingredient so simple could present such delicious results.

All I wanted was an encore...

    • SUMIYAKI BONANZA

      Apr 3, 2009
Business must have been slow that fine dining restaurants like Hibiki started offering a la carte buffets. The lunch is priced at 20.90++ and all food items to be ordered within an hour although one can carry on and slowly eat up the food after 1 hour. The dinner buffet is priced at 26.90++ and there is no such time limit.
We came here on a Friday night for dinner and the place was relatively empty (the recession must have affected the business to a large extent).
The buffet menu could not match Minori and Hanabi for variety. But the food was decently prepared and beautifully presented. The quality was generally superior to the abovementioned restaurants and there was really quite enough to eat.
      We sampled the following:
      1. The Hibiki salad made a delightful introduction to the dinner, with crunchy garden greens decorated with shreds of fried crabstix in a sesame sauce. What a great beginning.
      2. Goma tofu appeared in a beautiful container. Unfortunately it was rather salty and remained the main flaw of the entire dinner.
      3. Sashimi moriwase followed and there were 4 items : salmon (very good), maguro (average), tako (ok), sweet prawns (very tiny and fresh and sweet).
      4. Among the sushi, we tried the Tsubugai sushi which was fresh, sweet and crunchy.
      5. Soft shell crab maki appeared after that. Tasted ok but there was a lot of rice wrapping rather little crab meat.
      6. Ebi tempura was a winner with light batter and big, fresh & crunchy prawns.
      7. The sumiyaki items were a large variety. They were skewered and seasoned with mostly salt and pepper in contrast to the more commonly encountered ones done with sweet sauces. The chicken came with and without leek. Tsukune was firm and tasty. Nasu miso used sweet miso to contrast with the relatively plain egg plant. We also tried mochi buta (pork with rice cake) which was something new to us. The grilled salmon was fresh but a shade plain. They also served unagi kebayaki which was juicy and tasty.
      8. In addition, we had a chicken hot pot (tori nabe). Fresh chicken meat cooked in a soup base that was tasty and not too salty with cabbages, shitake mushrooms, straw mushrooms and tofu. Quite a generous pot which would have been a meal by itself with some rice for an average eater.
      9. There was only 1 dessert item, the yuzu jelly. It was refreshing but was too plain to be an exciting ending to a very satisfactory meal.
As the place was rather empty, the ambience was quiet and peaceful. Service was absolutely first rate. It could rival any 5 star outlet we have been to. Not only were the staff courteous and attentive, the food appeared at correct intervals, soiled plates were efficiently replaced, they even replace the glasses for each glass of water we drank!!
Due to the price of the buffet and budget constraints, the restaurant could not offer premium sushi and sashimi. Beef was also notably absent from the buffet menu. But compared to other restaurants serving buffet at this price, the quality of food was outstanding and the standard of service was exemplary. As mentioned, the dessert was not the most exciting item on the menu, but lots of restaurants do not even include a dessert in the menu for Japanese a la carte buffets.
We enjoyed ourselves very much and will definitely return for more.

    • Ego Bruising, Regretfully never going back

      Apr 2, 2009
Popped by for lunch with my wife, ambience was nice and comfy, decor was well presented.

With 3 tables filled only, we found ourselves a nice table and began to order.

      On the menu:

I must say it has quite a decent menu, the lunch sets are a great value for money, so plus points for this.
They also have a 1 hour long ala carte Buffet lunch deal going on at SGD $20+++ per head. Another crowd pleaser.

So I ordered a Unagi set meal and my wife ordered the aka carte Buffet deal as she was craving for Sashimi.

      Here comes the rants:

Firstly the table next to us grumbled amongst themselves that their food took over half an hour to arrive, and this was coming from a group consisting of an elderly couple and their middle aged daughter.

Ours was no better, for a place with only 4 tables filled on a lunch hour, our food took equally as long to arrive, despite me checking with the waitress twice.

Perhaps they were understaffed, but once again, no excuse.

When the food finally arrived, we pactically had to wolf down our meals in 20 minutes so i could get back to office. The Unagi portions were good, so another plus point on this value for money front.

The California Roll my wife order was too oversized to be eaten comfortably and it was a real mess to eat. So i called the waitress over and tried to give some constructive feedback, the reply i got was quite profounding "oh, well other customers complained it was too small, so we changed it bigger" Not really my problem, if you ask me. All i wanted was for it to be in a managable size so it could be eaten. Take it back change it, whatever but it really irks me that service staff find the easiest excuse to brush the situation away.

The deal breaker came when my wife was busy helping herself to my salad sauce by dipping her sashimi slices in it, a waitress (i think the chief waitress) came over and said, "ma'am, you really shouldn't do that". At this point of time we were both taken aback and had no clue why she had said so.

Was it because it was ruining her chef's "masterpiece"?

Then it dawned upon us that she thought my wife was passing her buffet item to me! Simple misunderstanding perhaps, but enough to leave us stinging in emabarassment.

I calmly explained what ny wife was doing and the waitress gave an apology that still left me with the feeling she was doubting us.
Perhaps it was a smarting ego but it was certainly enough for my wife to declare "let's never come here ever again."

Paid the bill, finished our tea and left for good.

Maybe i'm overbearing and too demanding, this place has its merits, i'll give it that, but sorry you've just lost 2 customers and i'll probably never recommend this place to anyone ever.

      1. Quality Japanese Food

        Oct 4, 2009
Visited this place on a Sunday for lunch buffet. They have Sweet Temptations Promotion where we get a lunch buffet for 20.90 each. However, there is a catch, we could only order within 1 hour.

We have to fork out another 2 dollars for free flow of green tea.

Ebi Tempura & Assorted Mushroom Tempura:
The tempura is delicious together with the accompanying sauce. The batter was just right.

        Sumiyaki:
We had Pork Belly and Asparagus, all of us were satisfied with the dish, the pork belly was a little crispy, and the asparagus taste alright, not too strong. Not burnt at all. Same goes for the Yakitori, tender, juicy and just nice.

        Temaki:
The Soft Shell Crab Temaki and California Temaki did not disappoint too.

Fried Tofu was a little too salty but still alright.

Some egg dish that gives a new twist to half-boiled egg.

Pomelo Jelly was too sour for me, but refreshing.

        The sashimi was fresh.

Overall the we are alright with the food, despite its limited buffet menu, the quality of the food is above average. The staff there were very friendly and helpful too with the menu and serving of drinks.

          Aug 22, 2009
Ok the waitress told me their signature menu is Sumiyaki (charcoal grilled) and I was thinking what a forgettable dinner I had. What was missing? Why the good reviews? Damn! I din order the Sumiyaki!!! Kick myself!!

I had their set dinner and the only memorable was Foie Gras with Steak. Sashimi was fresh, sushi was good and pretty good tofu cheesecake. That's about it ;) I was not wowed.

By the way, most of their tables were reserved for dinner. So better call first ;)

          • Definitely worth visiting

            Aug 9, 2009
When we passed the restaurant and saw only 1 table occupied, we were quite worried that it was an indication of the restaurant's standard. Good thing we didn't get turned off by it, or we would have lost out on a great meal!

Besides the regular ala carte items, there were also a special set meal and an ala carte buffet. We took the buffet, even though there were not many items on it. For sashimi, there were only Salmon, Tako and Sweet Ebi (the waitress said they were out of Toro). The sashimi was so so so good... Fresh, sweet, thick slices of salmon... Yummy! For those who go for jap ala carte buffet, you'd know its almost impossible to get such generous portions when you're paying for a buffet price!

The rest of the buffet menu consists mainly of handrolls, maki and skewered bbq items like pork with golden mushrooms and yakitori. Similar to the concept at Shin Kushiya. Not much variety, but every item is prepared on the spot (you can see the chef bbq-ing them outside).

While some might not find it worth the money to have the buffet when there are so few items, I beg to differ. Very often, we get so distracted by the wide array of food that we're unable to truly enjoy the true icon of japanese food - the sashimi. And at Hibiki, the sashimi itself is worth every single cent of it.

            • Fantastic

              Jun 4, 2009
Went with a group of girlfriends last week. I was initially rather worried that i had picked the wrong eating place for the group as we appeared to be the only customers (it was already past 7 pm when we arrived); but soon, my worries evaporated.

Though the buffet menu was rather 'short'; but being ladies, we couldn't really eat that much to start with. The 'short' menu was fully compensated by not only the excellent service, but also the excellent quality of most of the dishes.

The service was attentive but not intrusive. They even changed the plates for us twice or thrice without prompting.

When ordering the grilled dishes, be sure to specify how many portions you want; otherwise, the nice plate would only come with one stick of the grilled eel or mushroom, which looked rather comical, if not a waste of space.

Of course, as you would have read from other writers here, there is no dessert selection. Ice-cream would be most welcome.

I had a couple of glasses of their house white wine, and i must say that their portions were very generous, and i hope it stays that way :)

Excellent stuff - will definitely be back for more!

                  • $8 Set Lunch

                    Mar 29, 2009
OMG.. There a $8 Set Lunch at Cuppage Terrace. Is so cheap.. even Waraku need at least $9.90 for their cheapest set lunch.. It make me save alot.

10 March 2009.. my friends & i wanna eat before catching our movie.. anyway it still early:).. so we just walk around orchard road thinking where to go.. Then, we saw a girl in black giving out flyer. we took one. yup, e flyer about "Cuppage Terrace" having their $8 set lunch.. Asked the girl where is the place, and we went there.

We reach there.. There another girl in black standing outside welcome us with a very sweet and cheerful smile. She take us to our sit, and pass us menu. There alot promotion over. There "Buffet"($20.90++ for Adult), "UOB 1 for 1 Set Meal"($68++), Ala Cart Set Meal($30++ to $50++ if i'm not wrong) and Ala Cart menu.
Due to saving money OF COS we choose the $8 Set Meal. although the "Buffet Menu" is good and worth it but we think that is abit too much for us cos we not very hungry. And we wanna keep our stomach for our "Nacho Set" when we watch movie :P

There 4 different set for the $8 Set Lunch. so we took all the 4 set since there 4 of us:P
"Terriyaki Chicken Set" - which include "Agedashi Tofu", "Terriyaki Chicken"(they grill outside), "Rice" and "Miso Soup".

"Unagi Set" - "Salad"(i like their dressing and the topping which i don't know what that), "Unagi", "Rice", "Miso Soup".

                    "Yakiniku Set"(beef) - "Salad","Beef and Rice","Miso Soup".
This is different beacuse the beef and rice come together in a bowl where by the "Unagi Set" and "Terriyaki Set" is seprate.

"Sashimi ans Zaru Soba Set" - "Sashimi" and "Zaru Soba"
                    There 2 Salmon, 1 Maguro(tuna), 2 Tako(Otopus)and 2 Amaebi(sweet shrimp) in the Sashimi. I like it so much :P

Overall i like Yakiniku more maybe beacuse i'm a beef lover and i don't like sweet stuff.:P but they are all good.

After that we thinking of have dessert to share. we ask for menu, but there alot choice for dessert so we really don't know which to choose. The waitress is very nice and patient to explain everything to us. She say their most popular dessert is "Tofu Cheese Cake".
So we decide to order this since she already say that.

Well.. i have no ideal why it called TOFU cheese cake. cos i cannot feel anything that link to TOFU. maybe it very soft[?] :P
but i like it very much when it go with the Red Bean. And the chesse taste is not very heavy. beacause i don't like Cheese cake that have very heavy cheese taste. Sorry for those cheese lover. :P
But overall, it really nice. O!! The decoration is CUTE!!! :P
                    Strongly recommend for these dessert.

I like the environment, the atmosphere, the service, and of cos the food. There Sumiyaki and Nabemono over here too. I'll come back again to try it :P

but don't recommend for parent that have baby or small kid because there no baby chair or plastic plate, fork and spoon :(

O!! They open for Lunch and Dinner. that start from
                    Sunday to Monday :
                    Lunch---11:30am to 2:30pm (Last Order at 2pm)
                    Dinner--5:30pm to 10pm (Last Oder at 9:30pm)

                    • Hibiki (Cuppage Terrace)

                      Feb 12, 2009
Had lunch here by chance because I was actually looking for another Japanese restaurant which used to be along the old Cuppage Terrace but I think it has closed down already. Anyway I had not read up on Hibiki before deciding to eat there.

It was better than I had expected. Hubby had a sukiyaki hot pot and I had a korubutsu shabu-shabu. We shared a california maki and salmon sashimi, plus a pot of green tea (with roasted rice). Total bill was about $80 but the portion of food was generous.

Service was good, waitress very attentive and topped up the tea in our cups. Also explained to us what sauce to dip the meats in etc. Price of the california maki was $10 but portion is double what you get at places like Sakae Sushi. Same for the sashimi. Thickness of the sashimi here is double that of Sakae Sushi. I think it was $12 for 3 slices but well worth it.

Overall an enjoyable dining experience and I would definitely go back there again.

                      • Was she a real Japanese?? :D

                        Jan 12, 2009
Was here for lunch on Saturday (10th Jan 09).

Walked past, down the Cuppage Terrace stretch and back again, stopped at Hibiki to look at the menu. Wanted something soupy. Waitress standing outside by the menu, soft spoken, sounded Japanese? :)

Flipped through the menu and decided I'll give it a try.

Ambience is quite peaceful, I sat inside. Female vocal music was playing first, then later some nice japanese songs. Deco is simple and appealing. Lovely :) I was the only one there :P That, to some extent, is good, to me.

Tempura udon and orange juice was my order. Before anything came, I was admiring the dish and chopstick holder infront of me. Sparkly~~ Pretty :)

Juice came first. Hmm, didn't taste quite right. Took a few sips; it was like carbonated, a bit sour-tangy. So just out of curiosity, I called one of them, I'm guessing the manager because she was the only one in a kimono(?). I asked what kind of juice, freshly squeezed or something else. She said some brand I never heard before, but took my drink to check in the kitchen. Came back and asked if I'd like to change it! Because the juice wasn't very fresh! Erm.. and they didn't have freshly squeezed fruit juice. My next best alternative was cranberry juice as it was the same price (which was also some bottled brand), $6.00.

I thought it was "nice" they checked my drink and offered to change, even said the cranberry is "safe" and that she "tested it". Not from my glass, I hope! :)

Anyway, my tempura udon finally came. I thought it was cute. I disturbed the (japanese?) waitress with the motion of how big the bowl was! Haha. The tempura itself was separately served, in something I thought was an interesting idea, and also thought was the scooping thing in the barns where they were used to scoop... ... animal's stuff. The picture will give you a better idea, I hope.

Anyway, it was all nice, I couldn't finished my udon :/ sorry. Late night drinking and lack of sleep make me need sleep more than food. But it was nice, nonetheless. Soup was great, slurped it up. Tempura was lovely too.

Nice of the manager (?) to check with me if I was okay with the cranberry (probably because of my expression while drinking). Cranberry is a sour fruit, sugar must be added. She asked, saying the most people find it too sweet, but she likes it because it's sweet sour. That's how cranberry juice is made to be. I'm okay with it, it's nice :)

Sat for awhile, looking outside and watching people go by. Finally got up and went to the cashier to make payment. Decent place :)
