Worthwhile

Passed by the restaurant several times while going to Giant but didn't have the chance to go in until recently. The place was relatively quiet most probably due to the nuclear scare but there were signs outside reassuring that the food was safe and all.

When we first entered, we were greeted by polite staff. The service of the staff here is perhaps one of the better ones in a Japanese buffet restaurants that i have been to(and i've been to quite a few but this is the first time i'm actually trying to write a review for any). The plates were cleared constantly and the waitress kept coming by to refill the tea. Service wise, well done.

The first order came fast. The sashimi platter served was relatively fresh, much better than those served at other buffets at least. The other food that were served such as the maki and chawamushi and the standard stuff i order at other places are pretty good too. The only thing was that one of their grilled dishes was too salty. But the rest were pretty good i guess. Especially enjoyed the beef, kimchi pork and the maki served was one mean maki. My opinion is that the food served is above average.

Ambience isn't really a big deal for me but personally i didn't like the background music playing . But seriously for the food and service there, the ambience really didn't bother me much. Just based on the freshness of the sashimi alone, i would recommend this place already. Recommended would be my rating.

Expected

Yesterday we went to try the buffet dinner at Hokkaido to celebrate my hubby bday. Well, when we got there....the ambience was so so, we find it too dark & is quite crowded...first thing turns me off is we were told we are given a corner counter seats (although we dun really want counter seats), yet we were given a middle counter seats which we find it very unconfortable & later on, we were asked to move one seat downwards cos they did not plan the seats well, we feel it quite disturbing when you are eating half way thru...

Next for the food, the food doesn't look appealing, sashimi so so, I dun find any very nice dish to promote. Service wise, we have to request a few times for our green tea...after a few dishes, my hubby went to toilet, maybe is nt the food, maybe...anyway, sorry to say I will not recommend this place.

Excellent Service & Great Ambience!

I was passing by turf city to go GIANT to purchase some daily neccessity and decided to had lunch there with my family.

Was greeted by the staff very politely and they were smiling all the way till i left which really brighten our day and boost our appetite. The restaurant music was also very tranquil, music not too loud and not too soft, we still can chat with each other without being disturbed by the music.

Very pleased with the fact that my grandmother was not eating but was allowed to entered the restaurant with no additional charges. (Thanks to the kind lady whom is very elegant and sweet). She even offer my grandmother a bowl of noodle FOC which is true (Because i checked my bill after we exit). This lady also chat with us and ask us to comment on their food and services which can help them to improve.

Very humble and very polite! Value for money! Excellent Service!

I will visit again and recommend those whom haven't tried this restaurant to faster go try it!

One bad service staff and made the experience bad.

Went to this restaurant at Turf City after picking my wife up after she attended a dinner. My wife had been there a few times and asked me to try for a change instead of going to Ah Yat on top.

Upon entering the restaurant, there was a warm local lady that brought us to the table. Later, another FT lady came to us, I told her that only need buffet for 1 adult and 2 kids as my wife already had her dinner. Immediately, came an answer ''Oh, I need to check with my chef if she is willing to let us have our dinner here''. I look at the menu, it says minimum 2 adults, so fair enough.

Well, the chef ''allowed'' us to have our dinner there. Taking our order (we made 3 separate orders) were this nice local lady and a rather laid back man. Food generally ok for the price, but nothing to shout about. I was commenting to my wife, looks like a lot in the menu, but not sure what to eat. Then she said she will recommend to me some and she took over the menu.

Few moments later, that FT lady came, on the pretext of taking order. She took over the menu on my wife's hand and pulled out her cutlery and check them. I know what she wants, checking if my wife was nipping on my food. Told her we do not need anything at the moment and she walked off immediately.

Kind of irritated by her action. When she came around the second time and look at the table, I asked directly if she is checking on my wife. Immediately she said no, she said she is here to collect the empty plates, that were there all along when she came around the very first time.

Told her my feeling that she should not do that to customers, she immediately said ''I swear, I am not checking, actually if my wife eat some is ok'', and wanted to give my kids ice cream to compensate. In the first place, she was the one that told me I may not be able to dine in as my wife is not eating, need to check with the chef, then she said is ok for my wife to eat some when I questioned if she was checking on us.

Really pissed with the treatment first as potential food thief, and then as a naive kid that can be pacified by pinching some food and two ice-cream. I can only swear, I will not go back again... But to be fair, the local lady was really nice, and probably heard what I had told that FT lady, as I walked out, she apologised to me..

Mr 22MYP

First and foremost, we, the management of Hokkaido Japanese Restaurant, would like to extend our most sincere apologies regarding the incident. I am sure it was a misunderstanding due to the over-attentiveness of our staff.

Our company's policy is to have a minimum of 2 person to dine at our ala-carte buffet. Having 1 adult and 2 children is, of course, of no issue. It is always our staff's job to check with the Chef when in doubt. Most importantly it is their responsibility to pay attention to the needs of all customers, they have to check that all food ordered are served promptly, remove any empty plates, ask if customers require more food.

When our staff was checking for new orders, she definitely has no intention of checking on our wife. We apologize if the over-enthusiasm of our service staff caused you to feel uncomfortable in any way.

Once again, we apologize for the misunderstanding and hope that you would come to our restaurant again and let us apologize to you personally.

Thank you.

Buffet Alert

I was looking for some Japanese buffet, and the last place that I would have searched for would be at Turf City. However, when I searched online and found that place, am I glad that I made a reservation given that it was almost a full-house. Clearly this place has built a strong brand name over the years for people to go just to try it out.

A simple set-up, they were offering a relatively large buffet spread for $35 per head. Whilst I am on a diet plan, I have made the effort to try as many dishes as possible for your entertainment and the following are my thoughts on most of the items:

MUST TRIES:

1) Beef Teriyaki - This has to be the dish of the night. It is certainly the best beef terriyaki that I have had in any Japanese buffet and they use a good quality piece of beef done medium rare

2) Beef Yakiniku - This is another winner. They seem to do well in the beef categories as the beef is comes out really flavourful.

3) Sashimi - It would be strange going into a Japanese restaurant without trying the sashimi. Here, whilst not fantastic, the fish are served fresh and if you order the moriwase (mixed platter) it will come with some slices of mekajiki (sword fish) on the house.

4) Garlic Rice - I know I should not be recommending hard carbohydrate dishes, but the version served here has good "wok-hei".

5) Fried Saba (Mackerel) - Lots of oil, cannot go wrong.

TRY IF YOU HAVE SPACE

1) Cheese Chawamushi -This seems to be the rave these days as they put a layer of cheese on top of the chawanmushi. The dish starts well but there is too much liquid as you go along.

2) Curry Chicken Cutlet Rice - What I like about the way they do it here is that you can have individual portions and this allows for one to have variety. The chicken cutlet is nice. As for the curry, expect the instant quality kind.

AVOID

1) Grilled items like the chicken and the shishamo come up lacking in taste, probably due to the over-frozen meat.

2) Gyozas - I think they make it in house here but its over-fried and the minced chicken adds a strange flavour to it.

3) Teppan Beef - The beef pieces are inconsistent (some tough some tender) and overcooked.

4) Cold Spinach - do you like your vegetables frozen?

Overall though, I must say that it was very efficient despite the big crowds. Food gets served quickly and at this price point, one cannot complain about the quality.
