| FishHead's Cherry, Status - TAKEN
Okay...I know my title is abit duh...well, whatever lah...caused that what it seems to be...
Was given a task to bring my parents out for dinner after shopping at Ikea Tampines. I suggested Hong Kong Street Family Restaurant. Our orders were simple.
三撈河粉 - It's comes in 2 size. Small $6.50 or Large $11.
I personally prefer my 三撈河粉 slight wetter. The one they serve here is
abit too dry for my liking, the 河粉 is too "clotted" together. The 河粉 is so plain looking BUT tasty! Never judge the 河粉 by it's colour!
NOW...here's where my FishHead's Cherry was taken! I sux when it comes to eating fish. As long as the fish has bone, it's a NO NO for me. There's something about the fishhead here that change my mind.
豉汁苦瓜炒魚头 - Seasonal Price of $22 for a serving enough for 3 people. The aroma of the 豉汁 is good enough to kill me, I love anything 豉汁 from young. think childhood memories So I was really tempted to give this a try, maybe just a small piece I told myself. I took a bite eyes opened wide, tastebud explode inside my mouth OH...this is sooo yummy! So I went on eating it more and more till my mum realised and made comments that she need to bring me her more to get my fish intake. Do ask the kitchen to slice your 苦瓜 thinner as the one they serve with this dish is too thick to bite and enjoy.
Another enjoyable dinner for us, think mum will bring me back here for my fish intake :)
Drivers - coupon parking available opposite the "restaurant" or you can park at the basement carpark if you're willing to pay abit more than waiting during the peak dining time. |

| unpretentious zhi zhar restaurant
This is a restaurant that has gained popularity in the Eastwood centre community. It's weekend nights are usually packed! Well, I can vouch for it coz I frequent this air-con zhi char place ever so often.
Bf and I especially like its seafood yi-mien ($5 for small) and salted vegetables and toufu soup ($5 for small, enough for 2-3 person). This place does not scrimp on its ingredients. The toufu soup comprises of more seafood pieces than toufu! It also tastes slightly pepperish which keeps the tummy satisfying warm after drinking. The seafood yi-mien is deliciously springy, with the right amount of sauce in it. Yummmy.. already salivating at the thought of it.
Other dishes worthy of mention include: sliced fish beehoon, sambal fried rice, szechuan hot and spicy soup, prawn paste chicken.
Dishes that didnt quite go as well include: hotplate beef (beef slices needs more tenderiser; can be slightly tough), black bean horfun (too saltish), tom yum soup.
Service is usually quite prompt, except for weekends when the place is packed. Do not expect restaurant style service, but these ladies are quick to respond whenever u wave for attention. Well, we can't really expect much service when this place absorbs all government taxes and service charges.
Overall, a restaurant that provides decent food at a decent price. |

| Hong Kong Street is NOT in HK
I think I have told a few about this...Hong Kong Street is a street in downtown area near to boat quay...NOT a street in HK! Ok with that aside, this one is not the same as the HK street Chun Kee that is all over the island. This is another restaurant...but still same tze char formula with Sum Lou Hor Fun, Yu Pian Mee Fen, and Har Jiong Gai (prawn paste chicken) as the main stay.
I say skip the noodle soup, the sum lou hor fun is alright but the Har jiong gai is one of my preferred ones in Singapore. =)
Ambience sucks...well unless you like kopitiam setup in a air conditioned "fish tank". Service slip shod and kitchen damn slow when packed. But still I visit when I run out of ideas on where to eat or to get some Ha Jiong Gai fix. |

| Not all things HK are HK!
A week ago, we were invited by church friends to try this restaurant - our group was pretty large after service - I think about 14 adults and 1 youngster. This place serves typically tze char type food in aircon comfort - I don't think the HK element in their name really reflects much in terms of their cuisine. We had a pretty diverse range of food as would be expected in such a large group - here're the ones I remembered : Kang Kong Sambal (pretty blend and the belachan was really strong in a raw uncooked kind of way), the he cho or prawn roll (was defintely of the pre-packed frozen variety which you can pick up at NTUC), ko lo yok or sweet & sour pork pieces (was really sweet but the younger members of the party liked it), fuyong tan or omelette (huge with lashings of onions and carrots, etc but only two prawns cut down the centre about 3 times). The rest were pretty forgetable actually. Service was ok if you temper your expectations. The cutlery and plates etc were all kopi tiam plastic standard. Price wise I don't know exactly what my friend forked out, but it must have been between $150 and $200 since he handed the waited four 50's. I don't think I will come back here since this is pretty standard fare at best tze cha shops found in the heartlands and perhaps not even as good as most. |
