  1. WASTED MY TIME... A MARKETING STRATEGY WHICH WON'T GET RETURN CUSTOMER

    May 26, 2008
    Waste of my time...

First of all,I wanna try this outlet cos of the UOB 1 for 1 deal. I had noticed that this outlet has constantly promotion with UOB.
Please note, Pricing for a Dinner buffet is $54+++(per pax) before the discount. So you expect a reasonable quality right???

    Ambience

First impression is a cosy Japenese ambience. But wait, the seats are too low. Many time my legs just knock onto the tables. Very uncomfortable tables and chairs arrangement.

All waitress are wearing KIMONOS!!!! WOW... KINKY RIGHT?? BUT WAIT!!!
U can hardly see their waists. Sorry to say that, but u cant expect Auntie or ladies which are not slim to fit nicely into Kimono right?
And the way the waitress drag their feet on their trying-to-be clogs, is very irritating...

    Service

U see black face Kimono auntie ordering food before. No response for acknowlegment. just plainly write and left the table. Lucky, there is 1 or 2 nicer waitress, whom constantly refill the green tea and smile to you when collecting the empty plates from you.

    Food

TERRIBLE. I think is worse than Sakae Sushi standard. Not that I got anything against Sakae, but if a resturant cant even provide decent food than a "jap fast food" joint. then forget it.

EVERY food that come, i shake my head. Food display is FAIL... FRESHNESS FAIL...

Tanpanyaki prawn - NOT FRESH, stick to the shell and is so soft...
Sashimi - Is time to sharpen those knife. Never cut properly, still got a few piece "hanging" together. Ika, terriblely served. Only hope is the tako, juicy and chewy.

Chawamushi - i should call is "poker-dot" steam egg. u get wat i mean?

Sukiyaki (steam boat)- FAIL, suspect they use terriyai sauce for the soup base. is so SWEET.

ALL OTHER FOOD, FAIL, probably only the fried potatoes survive.

Value for what money?, when i wont even want to pay $20 for such food. Given after the discount, I paid $66 for 2 pax, I can get other decent jap food else where. Why waste my time on food that spoilt my night.

Agreed, went there once and that was the last time. Try Hokkaido, Akira and Tokyo (Amara shopping center). much better service and deals.
    • If you wanna try, now's a good time!

      May 15, 2007
Having been on a Japanese rampage this month, the words sashimi, sushi, maki, tori have been rolling off the tips of our tongues these few weeks, and so with the UOB 1-for-1 dining privilege and the reviews we'd read on that place, we decided to make a reservation for Honjin's lobster ala carte buffet....

      1) The name is awfully deceptive tho cos the buffet is really not even 0.5% about lobster. haha. Aside from the fact that its stated on the menu 'one serving round', the serving that came was really beyond our imagination. There were 4 of us and they served us with a small plate with 4 bite-sized (Read: smaller than a normal piece of sushi) pieces of 'lobster' meat. I say 'Lobster' cos it's so small we really couldn't tell if it was lobster meat or not. Can't even taste it too. But then again, if u read this review and are prepared then i guess 'no biggie' yea?

      2) pre-dinner service. I made a reservation a day in advance for a dinner on sat evening for 4, requesting specifically for tatami seating instead of the clustered counter seats. On Sat afternoon, they called to confirm my reservation, but only after repeating myself a few times and 'throwing' the name of the girl tt took my reservation earlier was a able to RE-secure my tatami seats....
(*side note: some people like counter seats cos you get your food directly from the chef + more 'interaction with the chefs inside the counter area. So you'll have to see what kind of a person u are and book accordingly)

      3) food- When we reached, we were guided to this room which had 2 tables, one already occupied by a grp of rather rowdy teens (*Odd, cos i recall her telling me that it was a private room). But we sat down nonetheless prepared to enjoy a feast. I mean at $62+++ per pax (without the UOB card) you'd expect good food right?

if only. Sushi, sashimi, maki, tempura, tori were all 7/10 (Similar to Sakae), the appetizers and desserts not worthy of mention. In general, fresh (No, none of us got food poisoning even after binging on sashimi, since that was the only thing worth really eating) and unenjoyable, but sadly no where close to the standards at any respectable jap restaurant. PLUS, they only served water and green tea. Other beverages like beer/sake/soft drinks are add-ons.

      4) MESSY service - I don't know if it was due to the "green" staff or the inefficient table numbering system or pure busy-ness on that day, but we waited almost an hour for most of our food. (*sneaking suspicion, which proved correct, was tt the servers were sending bulk of the food to the other table) FAINTZ.....

In the end we re-ordered our food and the nice server tried to hurry it out. Which in the end resulted in 2 rounds of some of the dishes coming simultaneously, even tho she canceled the previous order. MESSY!!!

      5) Ambience - Pleasant and noisy as any 'authentic' jap restaurant usually is, but thank God they don't do the screaming jap words thing.... wahaha... I totally can't stand tt. So randomly ear-jarring.... The Tatami mats were comfortable enough to sit and stretch and even for one guy at the next table to KO on (*Why they sell sake to under-aged kids is beyond me... i mean don't they make enough money from overpriced buffets?)

Overall, the whole experience was redeemed only by that ONE nice, attentive server and the endless flow of sashimi. So if you want the casual jap dining experience, have a UOB card and don't mind waiting 20-30 mins for medium-grade free flow of sashimi, then my advice to you is go NOW, before the promo is over!

As for me, we're hopping down to Hanabi next week... haha. Will keep you all updated!!

*Edit: I forgot to mention, parking around tt area is hell cos it's evening in CBD-zone where most car parks are season-only or closed. But a long walk back to the car is always good exercise after a meal.... =p

      • Food with no Jap taste

        May 27, 2008
Went to the buffet with high expectations. A shenton Jap restaurant sure have to serve good qualtiy food to survive. Perhaps higher the expectations, greater the disappointment.

        Food
        - With so many Jap ala carte buffet in town, its really an insult to to other jap ala-carte restaurant if Honjin is ever consider a competitor.
Best joke is the prawns are limited to 3 per pax. The prawns looked so unfreshed and the meat just refused to leave the shell.
The salmon and Unagi gets my vote for being good. Tuna must be a old fish or the chef just didn't know the direction of cut. It was full of veins.
Basically there's no quality in the food. Just felt the food was infront of you and just eat. You do not get to feel/appreciate the taste. As there's very min of it.

Didn't see the bill, but do we have to pay for the green tea? Whether or not, the tea tasted like plain water.

A very typical ala-carte buffet issue... orders missing in transit. I really wonder how such things could happen. Is this a way to pissed customers and thus they get tired and won't pressed for more orders?

Lucky have UOB 1-for-1 promotion. If to pay $54++ for the buffet, i'll hit my head on the wall.

Lesson learn: Don't have expectations by the eatery location. Don't be deceived by the original pricing. Company makes the whole diff. (",)

        1. Japanese Buffet, So So Here but Nice Ambience!

          Feb 25, 2009
Was here with a friend for the buffet dinner some time ago.

The first impression we had when we stepped into the restaurant was "wow"! The waitresses were wearing in the Japanese traditional costume - Kimono, and lanterns were hanging throughout the dinning area with Japanese decorations around would make you feel as if you are in Japan! It would be better if they can play some Japanese music or songs, it would be perfect! (They also have special rooms for family or corporate guests)

The buffet has quite a good spread of food and generally there were ok. Some actually stood out (such as the Unagi Eel, tempura prawns, soft shell crabs), others were just so so and nothing fantastic. The sashimi to our opinions was not very fresh and the soup base of the Shabu Shabu was to us salty and the beef slices were so thin that you could hardly feel you are eating beef! The desserts were fresh cut fruits placed in boat liked container, which was unique and the ice cream was normal.

Service wise was good initially (maybe less crowded) and quite prompt serving. However, as time went by, the lapse of service was obvious. It took us quite a while to place our order and wait for the food to be served. At times, we had to remind the waitress 2 or 3 times before our food actually came.

Based on the price we paid for, we did not feel it was really "value for money" as we could dine at some other finer Japanese restaurants that can serve better and more quality food and yet at the same or lower price.

Good if you can try all the dishes!

          • Why did I even go there twice??

            Feb 7, 2009
I was at Honjin Japanese Restaurant last Friday evening for its lobster buffet promotion. The first impression I had was that the restaurant was filled with sloppy, chin cheong waitresses clad in worn out Yukatas, who tried to explain that their 1-for-1 promotion doesn't mean we pay $34++ for two pax, but $68+++ for two and get two vouchers for free buffet during the next visit.

Service was lacking and food quality was nothing to rave about. When our free 'lobster' arrived, I was like "what lobster??"

I decided not to visit them again but today I decided to give them another chance for its lunch menu. Perhaps it'll be better than mass-produced buffet fare.

After a looooong wait (cos they ran out of RICE!), I was served my Sukiyaki set, which was mediocre. I wouldn’t say it's bad, but with that price I can have premium Sukiyaki at some other restaurants.

My colleagues ordered an Unagi-don and an Unagi Kabayaki set, each with unagi, rice, chawanmushi & fruits. The only difference between them was that the set came with pickles, and that came with a price difference of $7!

We checked with the waitresses to see if we could change the set to don, but got curt responses and excuses from them instead. They started 'whispering' out loud abt us at a corner after that, making me feel uncomfortable.

I doubt any of us at the table will ever visit that restaurant again.

          • Kawaii staff uniforms

            Jan 24, 2009
I like the setting of this restuarant where the Japanese culture is very evident here. I like the yukata that the waitresses are wearing, hmm i wonder where to get affordable pieces in SG for D&D hor??

For lunch, the four of us ordered the set meals. Everyday, there's a daily special set. That day was teriyaki salmon with agadashi tofu.

The service initially was ok but we personally find the waiting time for food to arrive was far too long (approx 35min) which was very challenging for diners who were working around there.

60min break - 10min entrance waiting and ordering (if there's no queue and you know what to order already) + 35min waiting time (after some bugging by us) + remaining 15min to gobble food. (O.o)"...

Imagine how fast we have to gobble the food up!

Food was edible and not too great. I find my tonkatsu too dry. The karaage was oily. The rest - foodcourt standard served in nicer manner by prettier yukata-clad waitresses. As for the price, mid-class restaurant price, not a place that i will frequent again unless being treated FOC.

            Like my post about Ikoi...

It's losing it's edge as one of the best places for Japanese Buffets.
Quite sad and depressing I must say.

I'd rather take my money now to a food store which sells Japanese food and will prob have extras for dessert.

              Oct 20, 2008
Went there on a FRI 1-for-1 buffet under UOB, S$54++ for 2.

Food so so only, taste like the very ordinary Japanese franchised restaurant in Singapore. Not so much special.

But with the price like this, I'd rather go for the other Japanese restaurants with a better discount.

                  • Pretty good $34 buffet

                    Feb 2, 2008
Scenario, dining with business partners (read: corporate tab). Same as my first visit (see review for Honjin Charcoal grill which is just upstairs.

The Honjin restaurant occupies 2 floors and has private dining rooms, normal restautant seating and sushi counter seating. The restaurant seems to be around for a long time and the waitresses dress up in Kimono.

There is quite a large spread of over 60 items from the yakitori, tempura, sashimi, maki, handroll etc. So for 7 pax I ordered about half the items in the menu which gave us a wide selection.

The food comes quite promptly. Sashimi is fresh and the tempura dishes are well prepared. I really liked the soft shell crab handroll. I would rate the food to be between Waraku and Nara standard.

We rounded off the meal with complimentary ice-cream and fresh fruits.

There is a 15% discount for Amex card use, so for about $36 (towel is free but not the green tea), it is quite value for money.

                    • Hotate 1 For 1 Promotion

                      Sep 15, 2007
Went to Honjin Japanese Restaurant to enjoy the 1 for 1 buffet however my group of initial 10 turn out to be 11. Still Honjin has got price for the odd number which was $34. We splitted the bill...

Anyway a week fresh from visiting Minori Dining & Sake Bar. I have slightly higher expections before visiting Honjin.

My verdict, the setting is more Japanese over at Honjin but food wise (food decor included), Minori wins hands down.

Still there were some things worth mentioning like the Tako Sashimi which was much chewier and jucier. Chawanmushi was better over at Honjin and the Shisamo seems to be a hot item. We only managed the first order and all subsequent order was replied with out of stock.

We were treated to a complimentary Hotate Sashimi when we were arrived which did not even give me the kick. Thankfully the rest of the sashimi was of some standard. The service was so-so due to the fact that there were many other diners ordering...

The only thing that Honjin beats Minori is their Unagi a must try.
Still imagine if there isn't any promotion. I think I would be much better off at minori. I think i can deal without tatami seatings...

                      • Better service during lunch compared to dinner

                        Sep 3, 2007
Sunday (2 Sept 07). Came here for lunch with my parents and godmother. The total damage was $127.12 by making use of the DBS credit card 1 for 1 buffet promotion.

I enjoyed getting my fill on the items I like: chawan mushi, sake sashimi, ebi tempura, kani tempura, shitake tempura, ebi furai, koroke. I gave the teppanyaki chicken, beef and bean sprouts a try again. The bean chicken and bean sprouts were passable this time, but the beef was tough (just like my previous visit).

My experience this visit was totally different from my last visit about a month ago. Compared with my last visit on a Sunday night, the restaurant this time was less crowded. The service was a lot more attentive and prompt. So maybe it might be a good idea to come here for lunch instead of dinner.
