    "food makes me happy!"
  1. This is only about Skinny Pizza

    Feb 18, 2009
Okay, this might not be very relevant because I only tried 1 thing on the menu, i.e. Skinny Pizza. But I felt that I ought to put in a review because it was SO DARN GOOD. At first I had this dilemma about whether I ought to put this entry under Skinny Pizza's outlet at Suntec, but I decided against it since the pizza I had was from the Dempsey side.

Anyway, the story goes like this: House/Barracks sent over sample Skinny Pizzas to the company I work at - which I can't divulge but let's just say it's to do with the Media (which may explain the good quality but anyway)- I had a slice of the Wild Truffled Mushroom pizza, and this was THE WORKS!

Roasted mushroom, garlic, truffle oil and fresh parmesan on a light and crispy crust (similar to the famous tissue Prata at Simpang Bedok), topped with arugula leaves. All fresh, all tasty, all good. and in such GENEROUS HELPINGS! If I had a choice I would take the whole box, but we have to be nice and share.

    So I'm giving the pizza a 9, because, dude, I'm usually not a pizza person but this got me hooked. The menu also indicates that it's a Skinny Favourite (http://www.dempseyhouse.com/pop-up/BarracksMenuOct08.pdf), which I'm not sure is a reference to the brand or the type of person you become after eating the pizza (I hope it's the latter), and for $18 it sounds really good value for money. House, Barracks and Camp can be happy that I've jacked their reviews in the positive direction because of a Skinny Pizza. :}

OMG OMG OMG. I'm surprised how updated this website is! In fact, when I was there last Sat, I secretly told myself that I'm gonna give this place a 10point review should I find it online, though half of myself secretly hopes that I won't be able to find it so that the "secret" won't be let out!

Cool place at a superb location, with unique decor, fun concept, great food and impeccable service.

When I first stepped into this place, I was awed by the view outside. The greenery that extends puts you into this totally serene yet happy mood. The nostalgia that emits from the use of old time hot water flasks as "vases" is quite a delight. The menu with little toy soldiers on the cover, carries food with delicious descriptions that makes choosing more interesting (and sometimes more difficult).

After we ordered, we were given a tour of the entire place, + upstairs (of the spa with thematic and gorgeous rooms + nice smells...SIGH.....) - totally adds to the "cool" factor of the place. There are many "private" rooms + function rooms that could cater to all sorts of occasions. Even a "green house" to dine in!

Back to the food. After a short tour, our food were served. Made with super fresh and fine ingredients...we were so won over by the food, that we all ate more then we should (considering we went there with 3/4 filled stomachs!

Zumara Salad has Japanese sweet potato (how special is that?), with spinach, grapes, bell peppers and some cheese, all mixed with this great sauce...it's REALLY one of the nicest salads I had ever had. The "leaves" were SO green yet sweet when taken alone (without the sauce), it was sheer delight. Tenderloin pork + potatoes + eggplant...meat was soft without the strong "pig" aroma. Noodles with prawns looked deceivingly 'simple', yet it was very tasty, less the usual msg aftertaste of normal hawker fare, plus the prawns...really fresh and done perfectly. Not too soft, nor overcooked.

The Muah Muah tea which I ordered was aromatic, 'thick', yet easy going! My friend's Mojito was one of the best I've had too! Nice balance of mint + lime + alcohol, none too overpowering.

Last but not least, THE DESSERTS! gosh. Chai Chocolate cake had the most interesting chocolate "mini-calls" on top and it was nice and moist, not too rich that we had to stop. The bread pudding, like my friend said, good comfort food. But I must say that it was the green tea tofu tiramisu that most of us liked best, cos' it was so special! The mix of tofu + soaked sponge cake + cream was great and it wasn't "heavy" at all.

I swore I was in a state of Euphoria on Sat...If fact, I liked that place so much, I brought my family there the following day!

Wagyu beef appetizer was not too bad, though I might have liked it more if it were more rare. The pork sandwich...hmm, I would have liked it much better if it weren't so "sweet" but as my brother rightly pointed out, it might not be special if it weren't sweet. The sweet potato "fries" were a refreshing change from the common fries. But I must admit the highlight of the day must be the STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE topped with cream sauce...!!

I am SO going back there again. Will choose the alfresco under the cage the next time it's not raining! Before it starts getting jam-packed and prices hike!

And yeah, nice to see all smiley servers who are very willing to answer all queries and attend to our needs. One of them even Offered to top up my pot of tea. Plus for that. Minus for "forgetting my bill" + "losing my tea pot" on the first day though...haha

So...too bad. Still not a 10-pointer! ;p But for prices like that...definitely worth a visit.

Forgot to add! They do not serve entrees before 6pm! Which was a major disappointment! They said it's "tea" time...but they kindly requested the chef to prepare the Salad, and later, the appetizer...if not I would have been MAJORLY upset. ;)

Btw, though I AM smittened with this place...I wish to share this with fellow foodies...and I look forward to reading other reviews! Hopefully you guys will like this place as much as I do. =D

I visited House again and I must say that their service seems to have dropped from the last time I was here (last year). To begin with, my beloved and I were in the vicinity at 6+ and decided to have an early dinner. So we popped in and made ourselves comfy on the chairs.

We weren't too hungry, so we ordered an Ahi Taki Salad and the Bay Prawn Capellini to share. The food came fairly quickly - possibly because the place was largely empty at 6.40pm - and were served in fairly sizeable portions. I must say that the Ahi Taki Salad DELIVERS; not only do the meat chunks look as appealing as in their menu shot, they also taste really good. Thumbs up for this; I'd advise everyone to make this a must-order. The Bay Prawn Capellini, however, was disappointing in that the taste wasn't very much there, missing something (essential spice or some other) and overall presentation made it look like a masquerading, thinner twin of Maggi Mee. Prawns were also not very delicious, rather dry in fact; after reading some of the reviews here you'd have imagined they were heavenly or something. But they were not, sorry.

After that we had the Chocolate Almond cake (or else the one that's rated number 3 on the desserts menu) and that was really good. Like, yum yum yum. And then we had a Madagascan Mojito from Camp, which was really good! Okay, thumbs up to food/beverage in general.

That's not my main grouse. My problem is that their service was not good enough for someplace at Dempsey. It had rained in the afternoon, so their staff was at the sitting area outside, cleaning up the benches for customers who'd want to eat there later. That much is understandable. What is not, however, is the idea of opening the glass partition so that all the cold air will rush out (that's not my main grouse, wait for it:) and MOSQUITOES COME IN. Halfway between my meal I realised that I was losing blood rapidly and asked for the door to be shut and air con turned higher. The latter they did, but the former request was ignored. So, I very sadly suffered a total of 8 bites that made my meal MOST UNPLEASANT and ITCHY.

The bill came up to $80+ for the dinner, bites and all. Wah lao eh. I wouldn't complain if not for the mosquitoes. Thanks much, House.

      1. Egg shells

        Feb 21, 2010
I love brunch, especially in a quiet and relaxing ambience. Sunday brunch are loved, the popular brunch places are in dempsey hill (in my opinion). There are just too many choices there, Jones the Grocer, Culina, P.S cafe..etc. Dempsey Hill is packed with foreigners especially during weekends and in the evening. House, Barracks and Camp House is built by the esprit group, parent company of other hip lifestyle brand in Singapore and overseas. The Barracks cafe at House is a casual and cosy cafe with a fining touch. Dine alfresco or sit indoors in vintage chairs. The CAMP, showcase the best cutting-edge local and international muscial talent while serving up some of the finest and original cocktails. The barracks cafe serves Brunch on Sat and Sun (from 11am onwards). The menu is a piece of ”newspaper” printed with food items. Innovative! The popular brunch items are of course the Egg Benedicts and they have other brunch bites, skinny pizzas as well. Barracks Freeform eggs ($18++) 2 eggs any style, scrambled, poached or sunny side-up… serve with chipolata sausage, rose tomatoes and mushroom ragout. This is highly recommended . The set comes with 2 slices of toasted raisin bread as well. The poached eggs were done fairly well. One of the egg oozes out with runny egg yolk… wait a minute! I bite into some egg shells. I was quite surprised when i bite into something sandy and I realised it was the egg shells. My goodness! I requested for the hollandaise sauce to be replaced by the bearnaise sauce. The sauce is quite rich, with hint of tarrangon vingear in it. The second poached egg, were not too sucessful. There wasnt much oozing yolk as the egg yolk seemed to solidify. The mushroom ragout were just too salty(in my opinion). There were a few variaties of mushrooms – oyster, shimeji, shittake being served. Skip that. The rose tomatoes were the best out of all. The tomatoes were grilled till perfection and they topped it with some minced shallots or something which I could make out. But that was perfect! I love the tomatoes and in fact I would come back just for the grilled tomatoes. Generally, the food is quite alright. Do leave some space for their baked strawberry shortcake which is a rather dense pound cake. I hope there would not be any egg shells when I order any of their egg benny set again.

      2. Brunch with Bunch!

        Feb 17, 2010
Can't remember what's the occasion but yah, the gang met up for breakfast at the Barracks! I think it's because Mr K (who is now Mr SP jio-ed). Yay. And to toast to the end of Mr Animator's singlehood.
        Full post here
The no-frills decor that the cafe has brings back a very rustic feeling. May had been a bit under-done for some, but I guess we were alright with it. At least the air-conditioning was working fine. Hot weather on the day we visited. And we pity those who had to sit outdoors. And yes, before we continue any further. Gong Xi Gong Xi from the little one. She had grown bigger since we last met. Note that she is almost as big as her mum liao. Ha. Very cute kid. And very fun when she's awake. :) It was a shame that the pancakes were sold out! OK, we took our time to order and by the time everyone was settled down, it was almost 12noon. So, lesson learnt. Order early. Or be there early. Mr Animator and Mr Pancakes had to settle for something else. (Both our first choice were pancakes.) Mr Animator settled for the Old-fashioned American Sliders ($22) which comes with sweet potato fries and truffle fries. Mr Pancakes don't take beef and Mr Animator said the burgers were ok. But then again, most things are ok for Mr Animator. :) Only a hint of truffles can be tasted from the fries, and it was slightly too dry for Mr Pancakes. Nothing special about it if you were looking for the wow! factor.  The sweet potatoes on the other hand was superb. Nicely fried and still moist inside and a crispy texture to bite into. Nice indeed. Mr Pancakes settled for the eggs benedict ($15) and was less than satisfied. The hollandaise sauce was too sour for his liking. The muffins were cold and the salad didn't taste fresh. And add to that a miserly serving of ham. Had to be one of the worst eggs benedict Mr Pancakes ever had. Mrs Pancakes settled for the Squid Ink Skinny Pizza ($18). And I must say, it was FANTASTIC. The crust tasted more like crackers and the squid ink sauce was just fabulous. The toppings were well balanced and most importantly it came warm! Splendid dish indeed. Mr Sailor (yay! Sailor Jr is arriving soon!) and Mrs Sailor settled for the Very Berry Stuffed French Toast ($17) which was supposed to be award winning. But it tasted like... french toast. Nothing special. Miss-able. We liked the HK Cafe one better. Mr SP (ex Mr K) had the Mushroom Risotto ($24). It was FANTA-BULOUS too! This had to be the best dish alongside the Squid Ink Skinny Pizza. Risotto was cooked to perfection and the flavours of the ingredients were totally infused into the grains. The woody taste of the mushrooms stands out and the creamy sauce was just right. Albeit a little costly, but a good dish nevertheless. And yes, the drinks were nothing to shout about. Minor incident after we asked for the bill and we asked to reimbursed the price of a drink which was not served to us. The staff did just that after some time, but did not include the GST. We demanded for it (fifty cents, but still.) and all was done. Despite this little glitch, it was an enjoyable brunch with the gang. A little over-priced but the two outstanding dishes saved the day.

        • Substance + Form

          Jan 1, 2010

I certainly didn’t expect to like Barracks Cafe as much as I do. Because it’s housed (no pun intended!) in the overrated Dempsey Hill, I’ve always assumed that the restaurant has form and no substance. You know, nice ambience and surroundings but overpriced average food. I love it when I’m proven wrong! When it comes to food, anyway. Because the food was good enough to make me eat my words.

Tossed in sesame seeds and sprinkled with salt and sugar, the Sweet Potato Nibblets ($7++) are sweet and salty all at once. So good that I almost burnt my tongue in my haste to chow down these addictive chips! I’m never a fries person so for me to say that I went absolutely gaga over them says a lot.

I love the Wild Truffled Mushroom ($22++)! Very earthy with lots of roasted mushroom and drizzles of truffle oil! I don’t even mind that the centre part of the pizza got soggy from the overload of ingredients on top after awhile since the outer crust was still so crispy.

Bay Prawn Capellini ($22++) is a westernised version of the local prawn noodles. Tossed in chilli with prawn bolognese and braised baby leeks before topping with pecorino cheese shavings, this pasta is one of the signature dishes but to me, it’s just nice in a very average way. No mind-blowing effect whatsoever.

Go for the Jamaican Jerk Pork Tenderloin ($24++) with peach-cranberry chutney, roast garlic potatoes and grilled vegetables if you are hankering for meat. The description on the menu says that this is an “out of this world flavour combination“. I’m not sure how true is this exaggeration but the friend seemed to like it well enough.

The Bitter Chocolate Tart ($8++) is a good reminder of why I don’t like tarts. Crust was too thick and dry, and the chocolate was not as bitter as I’d like. Such a misnomer!

Please please, if you can only have one dessert, get the Strawberry Shortcake ($9.50++)! Initially I thought it looked quite dense and expected it to be heavy but I was so wrong. This turned out to be light with no thick cream in between, and the generous amount of tangy-sweet berries was a plus. Pour the vanilla bean cream over the warm cake and just savour the moment of pure bliss.

This is my first time trying the classic French Rumbaba ($12++) and I don’t know how authentic this is but I’m glad it’s good enough to make me a fan. Soaked in rum and sprinkled with candied grapefruit, the small yeast cake was good with a not-too-rich batter. Pour the shot of rum over the whole thing and it does get kind of an alcohol overkill as the palate is overwhelmed. But I still like this for the novelty factor and because the strong rum helps to cut the sweetness of the vanilla sauce and apricot jam!

        • unforgettable sweet potato fries

          Dec 9, 2009
Dempsey on a Monday was far from bustling (like a Friday) but neither was it a ghost town. Perfect to unwind after a rocky blue Monday for a gf's birthday! Reservations are not necessary for a weekday, at least.

Red Pepper and Tomato Soup ($9)

I found it overthetop with the flavours though it is a rich soup. The tomatoes gave it a sour aftertaste which either makes you a fan or foe.

          Pantagonian Wagyu Beef ($25)
Served Gaucho-style with Sweet Potato Sticks

The teaser was "wagyu beef" more than the rest of the description. Pleased as punch that the wagyu cubes were juicy and well marinated, the sweet potato sticks pretty much sealed the deal. Think sweet potato mush coated with a crunchy layer and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.

          One Metre Long Sausage ($25)
Served on a bed of rocket with mustard to dip

I was expecting a full 1metre sausage but well, the presentation got us all excited..one that dragged across the whole table. We opted for spicy chicken sausage which was one of the more memorable ones I had in a while. The spiced meat was drooliciously good and polishing off the 1 metre was easy-peasy.

          Old American Sliders ($24)
A pair of burgers cooked medium well and served with a mixture of sweet potato and truffle fries, extra toppings of bleu cheese and bacon

Another spectacular. Beef patty was done to such perfection, resembled a steak though it was patty without the crumbly texture. Well charred with smokey fragrance together with stinky bleu cheese and bacon, I've already found another reason to return.

Truffle fries are their signature but there are two camps for this. I sat on the fence as to whether I loved it or hated it. The truffle oil only hits you after you chew and attempt to swallow.

Barracks Good Ole Fish & Chips ($27)
Cod Fish paired with truffle fries and malt vinegar and spicy ketchup dips

Cod fish really brings fish & chips to a new level altogether, giving the taste more dimension as opposed to soft, flimsy dory fish. The firmness of the flesh was plain addictive.

It could have been the amount of truffle fries and sweet potato fries accompanying most mains we ordered that triggered off a fear for truffle fries. In comparison, sweet potato fries are more pleasing on the palette. Thankfully we cancelled the separate side order of truffle fries!

          Anchovy Skinny Pizza ($18)
Anchovies, Cherry Tomatoes, Bocanchini, Fresh Pesto, Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Spinach & Egg Skinny Pizza ($18)
Spinach, Grated Egg, Ricotta Cheese, Sage, Olive Oil

Skinny Pizzas are signature so we had to give it a try. At the very beginning, we were told there were certain flavours that were out of stock but it only sunk in when we tried ordering that nearly all the meat flavours were sold out! On a Monday, no less. Apparently, they do not stock up daily. With sheer disappointment, we headed for vegetarian ones.

The pizza base reminded me of cream crackers that got soggy after awhile with the avalanche of ingredients piled on top. Neither stood out brilliantly, coming across as bland and uninteresting. Fou de Fafa anyday!

          Green Tea Tofu Tiramisu ($10)

This came in a glass so tall, it had better be good. The green tea tofu was too thick and tiramisu was yet to be deciphered.

          Freeform Lemon Tart ($10)

For presentation, this was innovative. I forgot once again how "deconstructed" is all the rage...sigh, I never learn, do I? The base of crushed biscuits with a dollop of lemon curd is simply what it is. The scoop of ice-cream like blob is well, whipped cream. House did not get the flavours right on this one, too sour I found.

Overall dinner was enjoyable. The company and I only had one conclusion, we would be better off with Ben and Jerry's sundaes for dessert.

          • Superb Brunch

            Dec 6, 2009
Had a wonderful brunch at House.
The wild truffle mushroom pizza is still the best of all. The softness of the mushroom melt in your mouth makes you feel that you are in heaven.
On top of that, I had their popular American Slider(lettuce, tomato & onion with truffle aioli @ e side). Having that, you forget the meaning of diet or healthy food for a minute...The meat was tender and juicy(medium rare)...The sweet potato nibblets coated with cilli sauce and it is a big WOW...
Well of course, I'm sharing this 2 dish with my good friend (had no choice but to share. Given a choice, I want it all by myself)...
We sat near the glass window facing the greens. It is such an awesome way to spend your sunday after the long week of work..
As I write this review with my right hand, the other hand is stuffing my mouth with the truffle fries...

          • Skinny Pizza's great!

            Nov 11, 2009
Don't you just love Barracks Cafe @ House for their bold interior decor? If you fancy sitting at a table under a table and the restrooms differentiate gender by pussy and cock, this is the place for you. It's the umpteenth time that I came to House and yet each visit presents a different gastronomic experience.

We had the following and liked them

            1) Squid Ink Pizza
            2) Strawberry Shortcake
            3) Carrot Cake
            4) and the fragrant Machiato.

          • Barracks is SO OVERPRICED

            Nov 9, 2009
Barracks would be a pretty good restaurant if the menu was half the price, but for the amount you pay to eat hear its miserable. Their non-alcoholic cocktails are a real rip off at $14sgd.

            • Eating out of DUSTY vintage plates

              Jul 26, 2009
Was just at Barracks yesterday for a friend's birthday dinner.

I have to say that it was a disappointing night, and i registered for an account as I feel rather compelled to write on this!

The earlier part of dinner went well. We had skinny pizzas for starters, which tasted rather good. This was followed by our appetizer, Beetroot and rocket salad with yoghurt dressing topped with raisins and berries. The yoghurt was slightly overpowering, the beetroot was fine.

I had the main course of a half baby chicken with blueberry and a yoghurt based sauce, while some of my friends chose the lamb with potato, cooked medium. The chicken was a golden brown but when I sliced it open the inside was rather raw - a large part of the meat was red and uncooked. My other friend who ordered the chicken as well had it worse, red, uncooked, and slightly cold.

As for the lamb, I did not get to try it. What I did experience with the lamb was that the plates that served lamb were COVERED with DUST on the rims. One of my friends happened to sweep his finger along the rim and was horrified to see his finger dusted in grey!!

Extremely horrified, the rest of us started to check our plates as well, swiping the rims for dust. At least 4 of my friends found dust on the rims of the plates. We informed the waiter but he did nothing but only gave us an apologetic look. We were extremely disturbed after that.

Dessert arrived - it was called the red cake with cream frosting and red berries. The first thing we did was to check for dust again. THANKFULLY, this time round the plates were clean. The dessert was probably the best dish out of the rest, cake was soft and frosting melted in just nice with the rest of the cake. It met my expectations.

To sum up, the food was way below expectations, service was fine, and in all, i think only the dessert (and thank god for the ambience) saved the night!

Please do remember to check your plates for dust before u start eating!

            • Service Charge but no service

              Jul 13, 2009
Went to the House to celebrate a local band who was releasing their debut album on Saturday night.

On arrival, I have half a dozen colleagues and being the more senior person on spot, I was happy to buy everyone a beer.

First surprise: beers don't come in jug. For the seven of us, we have 1/2 pint each.

Then second surprise: no, we are not bringing the beer to you, you have to come get it at the bar. So I paid $90.63 for 7x Hoegarden including a service charge of $7.70 on my own service. This is insane!

              • fun place for brunch with friends

                Jun 6, 2009
On yet another outing of our brunch club, we hit House / Barracks at Dempsey Hill.

I like the relaxed vibe and flooded-with-sunlight interiors. Plus the food is good :)

We liked the skinny pizzas - unsual combinations that come together on a crispy crust. Yum. The egg dishes are very satisfying - I like the Freeform Eggs. My friend that ordered the prawn pasta though said it was kind of average.

If you have room try the yummy, yummy desserts.
