  1. Not too bad a pepper crab!

    Aug 1, 2008
Was surprised by e sudden bloom of seafood (or crabs) restaurants along yio chu kang road.. 1st there's crab party n now house of seafood @ 180 (wat a name..) n crab delicacy (erm wat a name as well)...all within less than 5 mins of each other!.. my dad tot that perhaps someone had realised there's not much crab places in e sgoon area n decided to spice up e area with chili n pepper while my mum tot tat with sky high petrol prices.. ppl decided that driving to sgoon to attack crabs r cheaper than driving to east coast! either way gd for us!

Okie enuff of these crabs i mean crap n let's go straight to e pt.. Located along e road.. parking is a headache (they provide helpful tips on e table n there's valet parking on e weekends!) but once u r done u r greeted by e friendly boss n kopitiam style setting.. (tink pink plastic table covers bright lights no air con etc lined with photos of celebs like jack neo moses lim mark lee etc).. it's a no fuss place so forget abt ambience but e savings from e simple layout do get passed on to e customers in terms of pricing..(unlike melben's)
vegs starts from $6 meat dishes $8 prawns $15 fish head $18 n crabs $38/kg..

There's 4 of us so we had the signature black pepper crabs! it was a hugh crab so it's worth e $58 price tag but it's weird tat we got us such a hugh crab when we ordered quite a lot of dishes.. it's cooked like e black pepper crabs at joo chiat eng seng's ie wet version (intro on e menu said this place was from @joo chiat but i dun tink it's e same one).. it's pretty tasty so worth a try if u dread e drive to joo chiat (rem sky high petro pxs? haha) n e long Q but of coz eng seng's one rocks!

we also had e cereal prawns ($15) which is juz avg.. sld have juz ordered e butter prawns instead but nvm...e steamed fish head ($18)was not nice.. e meat was too tough.. my mum complained tat this kinda fish is not suitable to steam n is better for curry/asam type n got them to add some chai po.. e san bei ji or claypot chicken is not bad although i prefer crystal jade's n e signature tofu with pork floss ($8) is pretty good n i would order this again.. 5 dishes for 4 pax n e damage is $120 or $30/pax.. not too bad..

Overall it's pretty good food with a pretty decent price tag.. will most probably be back so do give it a try!

*** was back for dinner n i gotta say e food is really not bad! whether izzit e stir-fried kailan to e claypot chicken.. it's cheap n yum! e crabs r delish as well although e joo chiat's one is still e best! e crabs here r not as infused with e black pepper sauce as joo chiat's (or to say not as "ru wei") n joo chiat's more generous with e black pepper sauce which greatly improves e yum factor! but it still makes a great place to eat!***

some of the new dishes i've tried: e salted egg crabs u could give me a miss.. i liked e idea of frying e crabs 1st (reminds me of e curry crabs in bangkok's somboon!!!) but e batter of salted egg is very diff from e usual wet ones i prefer.. dun like this version..

    • long wait!

      Sep 1, 2008
I called to make a reservation for sunday and was informed by the staff that they were pretty full but 745pm is fine. It was really crowded when i arrived and we had no place to park our car. There is a valet parking service. However, the valet guy was too busy and was unable to handle the crowd. He wasn't at the counter so we had to drive across the road to park at the small lanes and walk over.

We got a table pretty quickly. However the table is just outside the open concept kitchen. The drinks were served promptly. BUT the food takes forever. We waited for an hour before the food arrive! It is terrible. The staffs are sooooooo busy. They were running around taking orders and all. I think that they are under staff.

After 45mins of wait, we decided to ask if our food is going to be ready since my impatient father insist that we should go elsewhere for food.

They simply couldn't give us an answer on the estimated time that the food can be served. We were about to leave in a second when the food FINALLY arrive.

The "brocolli and scallop" and sambal sweet potato leaves tasted like it should be. The hokkien noodle is quite nice although a little too soggy for my liking.

Of course the highlight of the day is their famous Black pepper crab!! This dish is yummy! The black pepper sauce is nice and the crab is very fresh and juicy. The black pepper sauce blands well with the crab. It is spicy enough and the sauce is not too sweet. The black pepper does not have grainy black pepper seed and there are a lot of sauce on the crab.

Most of the food are very reasonably priced. The crab is pretty big and cost $57 for 1 crab. The noodle cost like 6 bucks and the vege is about there as well. The drinks are about 1.50 for a canned drink.

The 2 problem with this place is parking and the wait.

We had a scolding from the owner of the houses where we parked our car. They were complaining that there are too many cars parked on that stretch and that they shouldn't park there. Oh well. We know that it is really too many cars there and had to apologise to them.

      • I thot it could be better

        Sep 22, 2008
The GIGANTIC Crab signboard is too hard to miss along Yio Chu Kang road and the long queues of cars and people were the tell-tale signs that this place might be selling pretty good stuff. Hence, we decided to give it a try.

Heng we were early (ard 6pm)so we need not queue too long for a seat for 6. Not bad leh, they still got valet parking somemore. Upon looking at the menu, I was a lil disappointed that they only serve 4 different flavours of crab as I thought it would be as exciting as the next door Crab Party, the place I always go.

Anyway, for the night, we all had
        1) Chilli Crab
        2) Black pepper crab
        3) Hotplate Venison
        4) Stir fried doumiao with fish slices
        5) Fu Yong Omelette
        6) Prawn rolls
        7) Special Tofu

I would say the speed of which the food was served was amazing fast. Our table was too small to accomodate everything at a shot so all of us was like gobbling up the food so that the plates could be cleared for the upcoming ones... Almost choked siah...

What I like there were the venison and the prawn rolls. The crabs were a lil disapoointing as both pepper and chilli were too sweet for our liking and the crabs were not so succulent and meaty that day.

The black pepper was overly drenched in dark sweet sauce that for once i thought it was dark sweet sauce crab with pepper flavourings.

In short, I still prefer my Crab Party over House of Seafood for the crab quality and the variety of ways the crab are prepared.

      1. Woohoo to Salted Egg Crab

        Mar 17, 2010

Ventured to the House of Seafood following good reviews on the Black Pepper Crab. It supposedly served the best Black Pepper Crab in Singapore.

Making reservation was very simple. We made it online - it was THAT simple.

The restaurant is a typical, by-the-road seafood restaurant with a wall of photos of the owner and celebrities. The service is also typical, by-the-road seafood restaurant standard.

        We ordered:

        - Black Pepper Crab: As raved, it was really very good. The crab was succulent and the sauce was peppry hot and really tasty. Worth it. We even ate mantous with the sauce and kept the sauce to eat with rice and etc.
        - Chilli Crab: Not worth it at all. Do not order it. We ended up eating the crab meat with the Black Pepper Sauce.
        - Salted Egg Crab: Surprisingly VERY good. Ate salted egg prawns several times but it was the first time we tried salted egg crab. It was really tasty. It was so good that my friend went back again just to eat salted egg crab.
        - Mee Goreng: Normal - not really worth it.
        - Stir fried Kai Lan: Normal but do order.
        - Mini Mantous: Normal

So, that's my verdict. Anyway, I didn't think it was expensive. We paid about $30 each and we ordered pretty big crabs (i didn't remember the size because my friends decided on the size). For crabs, I think it was quite worth it.

        • Excellent service & good food!

          Feb 21, 2010
I probably booked my dinner during the busiest day of the year! It was the 7th day of CNY and the crowd is MAD, MAD, MAD! Despite that, i still get to enjoy excellent food & A class service! I found a seat within minutes, even though I made booking, I still have to 'fight' for a table on my own. It wasn't like that during weekdays but I guess they need to seriously look into having a good system in allocating seats. The crowd is very hard to control on special ocassion like this. I saw customers throwing temper at staff, yelling at them... I wonder what's the point. Customers these days are hard to please. Its not like the staff are acting busy or doing nothing, from what I see, they are wking really hard, running ard to serve demanding customers. One of the customers even left after getting a place just beacuse the staff took my order before her cause she said that she came earlier than me! Or maybe some people think they are in some high class restaurants, bear in mind, this place is like a big zichar stall with no service charge & GST! If you want to order, jolly well call a staff and not bark like a lunatic! Despite being super busy today, all of them were still v patient and apologized profusely for 'neglecting' our table and explaining to us that they are really busy. This is A class service. And i think this is why this restaurant stands out among other places! The staff are all very patient, alert, diligent and friendly. Food wise, needless to say, the long queue along the road explains it all! I stay just along the stretch of road & the place is always vibrant & crowded. The crab is the best I've ever tasted (in Singapore) and it is the homely treatment I received from the staff that enhanced it further. My advice: go patronize them if you are a patient person, and please don't expect Au Jardin service when you are paying just a fraction of what you are paying for posh restaurants. The must try: Salted Egg crab Black Pepper crab Pork ribs (the bones are so soft, almost edible!)

Did a booking online made at 1.24pm, confirmed via email at 2.29pm. Made phone confirmation at 6pm. Branch Visiting: Yio Chu Kang Date (DD-MM-YYYY): 20-09-2009 Reservation Time (HH:MM): 19:30 No. of Guests: 5 + 1kid
When arrive at 7pm, was told booking name not found.
            Made to Q from start.
After order made, the crowd of 20 that Q behind us and order after us are served ALL dishes while we are still not given any food after 1 HOUR except drinks.
We ordered white rice, fried "油条", deer meal, pepper crab and chill crab etc. When questioned on our dishes many times throughout the hour, the waitress all walked off after "entertaining" us. Informed that they will get back to us after checking with the kitchen when a number of team have walkie talkie. Only after we make a fuss to talk to the manager which they sent a senior age man in polo tee came fried "油条", deer meat. Rice not served.
No apology made. The place is so WARM... After 1.5hours, everything came but chill crab still not in sight...
When ask for another set of utensil, the dish serving waitress informed she is not in charge...can u imagine my reaction? When enquired for the chill crab, they informed still cooking...OMG.
anymore. Surprisingly, bill came faster than the takeaway food.
No GST, No service charge as per advertise.
No discount, no apology and no thank you.

Enjoy yourself if you are going there for dinner.

          • Ordinary..

            Oct 26, 2009
We booked a table for 7. The staff showed us to a table right behind a fridge. Needless to say the seat nearest to the back of the fridge was quite warm. Our request to change to the table next to us was rejected. The staff said that table is meant for table of 10. However minutes later, a family of 6 was seated right at that table!

The food were served within 15-20min. However, additional orders of drinks and extra chili were 'forgotten' about till around 10-15min later.

            We ordered the following:

Steamed Soon Hock (HK Style) : 9/10
            -----------------------------------
The fish was quite big and very fresh.
            Quite good.

Bailing mushroom with veg of the day (spinach) : 7/10
            -----------------------------------------------------
Too little vegetable. Bailing mushroom was nice.

            Ee Fu Noodles : 5/10
            --------------------
Very ordinary. We wanted to order Longevity noodles
but were told that it needed to be pre-ordered..
=.= how would we know if that was the first time we went there?
Is it so difficult to prepare that dish?

            Some crispy chicken : 4/10
            --------------------------
Not so nice.. The one at Gim Tin (AMK) is very much nicer.
Over-fried, in my opinion. The sauce is not good. Tasted like the
sweet sauce for chee cheong fun.

            Black pepper crab : 6/10
            ------------------------
4 points lost to the black pepper sauce.. The look of the sauce
was enough to make me lose my appetite. Too strong but spicy enough.
Crab was fresh and pincer was big.

            Chili crab : 3/10
            -----------------
Sauce was ordinary. Crab was fresh BUT! I suspect they didnt wash
the crabs thoroughly. I put the lower part of the pincer to bite and
smelled something like sh*t!! I got a shock! Brought the portion to my nose for a better sniff.. Indeed it smelled like sh*t. Totally disgusted and traumatised. :( The thought of the smell lingered in my mouth and mind till the next day..

            Peanuts : 2/10
            --------------
They served some cheapo kachang putay and charged $1 for that..
I didnt asked for that in the first place?!

I went over to the counter to make payment. The cashier was busy i think? She ignored me. A waitress kept going to and fro the counter, pushing me around because the space was limited there. Eventually a lady which I supposed is the boss or one of the management staff came over to help me with the payment. She was nice and polite. Though she forgot to return me my credit card after handing me the receipt (i forgot about the card too), that lady came out of the restaurant and passed the card to me personally while I was waiting for the valet service. I really appreciated that.

          • big crab but no meat

            Sep 23, 2009
            - Ordered chilli crab and the gravy was delicious. Fried bun was good too.
            - Service was not bad as the service crew attended to us without delay. As there were 4digit number carved on the crab shell, i thought of bringing the crab shell home and they are kind enough to wash the crab shell for me.

However, crab may look big but the meat was so little!!
Crab meat was not firm as well.. seems like the crab is not so fresh afterall.

No car park in the vincity as well :( gotta park illegally at the bungalow few streets down..

            • Crabs are nice

              Aug 28, 2009
Placed a booking online in afternoon but seemed that they didn't get our booking as the staff said that the booking list doesn't have my name. Fortunately we had arrived early and there were many empty tables.

What irked us was that the staff kept saying that our chairs could not exceed the concrete pavement (coz will kenna fined) but they seemed to have some double standards as we later observed another person's chair over the pavement.

We had wanted to buy our guest a treat. I had placed my credit card but the staff just stayed there like a dummy staring at our guest paying with cash.
This left us with sore feeling right at the start of the meal.
HINT: If you want to give a treat, bring CASH. They prefer CASH to Credit Card!!!

              We had the following dishes:

              1. Black pepper crabs
The black pepper blended well with the crab meat. The pepper was very very hot, but we kept going for more =)

              2. Chilli crabs
Nothing special. The mantou was nice though.

              3. Cereal prawns
              Not dry enough

              4. Sweet potato leaves cooked with garlic
              Nothing fantastic

              5. Salt/pepper pork ribs

              • Bad service for takeaways

                Aug 7, 2009
With so much publicity, you would think that they had BOTH GOOD food and GOOD service. But no, they had NICE food and a BAD attitude. Just today, my family ordered takeaway for a Chili crab and a Black pepper crab.

To my horror, the Black pepper crab had one HUGE pincer [which was okay, cause the crab was quite heavy] and one TINY pincer [ The proportion is like 4:1 ] My dad was furious and called the House of seafood. He was transferred from one person to another until he finally managed to get hold of one 'captain' . He asked for an explanation about why we had a huge pincer and a tiny pincer, which didn't make sense unless that particular crab was lame. This had happened TWICE. The captain replied in a bored tone that the crab was just like that. One huge and one tiny pincer ? I seriously don't think so. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the person on the phone had a BAD attitude and a HUGE ego. Just cause a lot of people go to their restaurant doesn't mean that they can give attitude to people right ?

              • very disappointing..

                May 24, 2009
with so much advertisments, and publicity, me and my hubby thought we should just drop by on a sat night along with my 2 kids to taste how great the food is, first off, we have been told that we have to wait for an hour for our seats, parking wasn`t much of a problem becus they offered valet parking.
finally got our seats after AN HOUR! My kids are too tired and hungry, we orderd their "Signature Dish" "black pepper crab" accompanied by vegetables, prawns, tofu and you tiao. we waited for 45 mins or more for the 1st dish to come, then another hour for the rest of the dishes, very bad start to dinner! it was ridiculous! as though they tot we ordered one dish only, like they forgot to cook the rest of the dishes! the dishes tasted okay, nothing special about it, quite plain, my kids only like the you tiao,so we were hoping that the black pepper crab would be worth our waiting time! waited another half an hour then the crab dish came, the crab were huge, however the meat wasn`t meaty, and smells a little funny, maybe not too fresh? the crab was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. It was suppose to be black pepper crab, they gave us black sugary crab with not really freah meat, it doesn`t live up to its name AT ALL.
Overall, my family had a very disappointing meal. we would never be returning there EVER.
IT WAS A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME EATING THERE PLUS IT SPOILS MOODS.

                • Ridiculously Long Waiting Time

                  May 16, 2009
Reserved a table and went for dinner last saturday. Came to this dining area that looked like a courtyard or something with floodlights shining. Waited for one hour before somebody came to take my order. Waited for another 45 minutes before the 1st dish came. Waited for another 45 minutes before the 2nd dish came and finally waited for another 30 minutes for the dish that I thought would worth my wait (peppercrab). It was a total letdown. The food is basically not worth the super long waiting time for sure. I don't think I will ever go back again.

Last Sat was a Mother's Day weekend.
Avoid such "special days" for eating out to minimise disappointment.
                      I celebrated mum's day during the weekday ; )
                  • Reunion Dinner 2009

                    Jan 25, 2009
                    We had:

                    1. Black pepper crab - 9/10
Very strong pepper smell with the butter fragrance melting in ur mouth. The crab were very big in size, well worth the $$$.
2 big crabs at about S$117.

                    2. Steamed 红斑 - 8/10
I dunno wat isit named in english. hehe.
We got it steamed in preserved radish (TEochew style)rather than the common Thai/HK style. Fish was very fresh and the sauce was well done.

                    3. Sharksfin - 8/10
How should I describe it lei..I had several helpings! haha.
They were quite generous with the sharksfin though.

                    4. Yi Fu Noodle - NA
                    No comments, I hate noodles.

                    5. Poached cabbage with mushrooms/dried scallop- 7/10
Not too bad, but ok to miss it.

                    6. Champagne pork ribs - 4/10
                    FAIL
dunno isit becos it's CNY eve, they were super bz. The boss told me they had200+ tables today (but none of my biz right? haha). I felt that the ribs weren't marinated enough, and not properly fried.
                    It was tasteless and rubbery.

However, the staff were very prompt and polite despite the huge crowd.
                    They managed it very well.
Valet parking guy at the doorstep - Excellent too!
