Ikyu is definitely a gem around the Tiong Bahru neighbourhood. We went during the restaurant week. I totally love the scallop carpaccio, tempura somen and the wagyu beef! The service was friendly and swift too!
The food served is on par with most japanese restaurants. Of course it is better than sakae or ichiban mass market japanese restaurants. I went for a try after hearing rave reviews from class 95 and some of the reviews here. i feel the need to correct or readdress the high ratings given (who knows who rated it in the first place)Had the following:Oysters $8/ piece(4/5) - good tasting without the fishy tasteChu Toro sushi $25 (3/5) - Ok but certainly not the freshest or bestPremium 5 type sashm $58/68? (2/5)i - Slices are too small for my liking. Not worth the priceJapanese Wagyu steak $68 (2/5) - Ok but certainly tasted better both local and abroad. Its cold when served. Miso soup (1/5) - its lukewarm when served. Nothing special and its not hot enough.Salmon "belly" sushi - Its not the belly but chef still serve me when i ask for salmon belly.Ambience... not that good too.Cost $240 for 1 person. Expensive but not the quality.

High-ended Japanese restaurant Ikyu (pronounced E-Q) has opened at Yong Siak Street in the Tiong Bahru ‘old estate’. You may be surprised – another one? There are already more than 20 F&B places there.
Ikyu which means “take a break” and with a tagline “is the new s***”, sells the usual Japanese basics such as sushi and sashimi, but with a contemporary fusion twist.
The 54-seater diner seems promising – décor is modern and service friendly, sometimes too friendly as different service staff came over to ask “Is everything okay, do you want to eat more?”
I was urged by the service staff to order the Omakase ($128), which I was reluctant for the untried and untested. Instead I went for several of the starters such as Soft Shell Crab with Mexican Salsa Sauce ($12.50) and Assorted Wrapped Pork ($15.50) and Yuba Uni ($10.00) which were delicate, definitely above average and creative.

We went there during the restaurant week promotion. Was served with 5 course meal. I am telling you, it's the best Japanese restaurant I've tried so far! First of all, the service was great. They are professional and friendly. They come and keep the empty plates soon and WIPE the tables after every course. We had fried chicken salad as appetiser, fresh sashimi ( all Super fresh and sweet), assorted tempura, steak (the only dish that I didn't quite enjoy) and finally mango pudding. We also ordered half dozen of Canadian oysters. Fresh and fat and juicy.

There is something undeniably sensual about the dining experience at Ikyu. From the minute you walk in, you’re welcomed by a sleek, softly-lit interior, sultry music playing in the background, and rolling images on plasma screens of the food that awaits, visually seducing you as true food porn should do. It’s like the whole place is whispering “come hither” sensually in your ear. Miles away from a traditional Japanese restaurant, more like s** on legs (or chopsticks). It’s no wonder that they bill themselves as “the new s***”. Sauntering around Tiong Bahru one day, we decided to give this place a shot one lunch time, and to sample their set lunch offerings.
The set menu here is $28pp and comes with a choice of two appetizers, five main courses, choice of dessert plus coffee or tea. On the starters, the Wagyu Tsukune was our favourite. Juicy, flavoursome meatballs which we devoured in an instant. The Fish Nanbanzuke, deep-fried mackerel in a sweetened vinegar marinade had a unique taste to it but perhaps one that is more acquired. As for the mains, the Grilled Seasonal Fish (which on our visit was salmon) was a decent portion of tender, meaty fish which came with an excellent house-brewed miso soup and a side of crab and avocado roll. The flavouring was delicate, and very easy on the palate.
