| Standards have fallen
I'm a fan of the cafe outlet in Jalan Pemimpin, and had good memories of this branch in the past. Sadly, standards have lapsed lately.
I had the beef noodles, which was one of the better dishes. I noticed that the stew in which the beef parts are prepared (not the soup) is paler, and when I bit into the chunks they were tougher and less tasty than before. And horror of horrors, diced carrots and peas make an appearance in the soup. The rice noodles are still smooth however. It's all still edible but nothing like what it used to be.
On another occasion Dad was served fish and prawns in the seafood fried rice that weren't fresh and marred the taste of the dish. He hasn't eaten here again since.
Having said all that, the prices have not changed, although cashew nut toppings now cost 50 cents each. We'll eat at other establishments in the building and area (not all of them, mind you) until we tire of them. |

| Good Thai Food. Thank you
I love this forum review. Because of the good recommendation, I decided to drive there around 3:30pm today to down a bowl of Beef Soup (with rice)
For a $4.50, I had a generous bowl of beef soup with kangkong and cubes of radish inside. Foor fried garlic lovers, you'll scream with joy as the lady cook puts them in to bring the taste to its fullest. There were 3 beef balls and large chunks of beef inside the bowl.
I had a nice meal at Thomson Plaza this afternoon.
Ps. This stall is ran by Thais. So, that explains the taste! |

| The Thais Dislike It But I Love It
Following on the theme of my last review, it was now my turn to suggest to the Thais where to eat and so after consultation with some friends I picked Jai Thai. I figured, Thai cook, run by Thais so I thought it cannnot go very wrong. Well, lets see...
The setting is an no walls corner of Thomson Plaza, which I did not realise was so out of the way for me, whereby one would expect strange noses to be peeking at your food while eating - but it does create a nice informal setting, and at this price point one really cannot complain.
I started out with the beef soup which costing only $4 has large chunks of beef, meat balls and cow spare parts and certainly could be a full meal by itself. The beef was tender and the soup was comforting to the soul after a long day at work.
I then tried the prawn patty, which I enjoyed as the batter was not overwhelming and there was still quite a bit of juices intact on the prawn bits. The Kang Kong was ordinary but not overly filled with oil - which is a plus for me. The spicy chicken was nice with the pieces of breast meat not being too dry although I did not enjoy the large amount of sweet chilli sauce that it was soaked in.
In terms of service, despite being a small outfit, it was not easy to get the attention of the waitress.
Overall though, I did enjoy my meal but when I asked my Thai friend, he said that thd food may only get a 5/10 from him - and I think he was being very polite to me when he sheepishly said that.
Oh well, guess a restaurant can't please everyone! |

| value for money thai cuisine
this tucked away, under-rated stall in obscure plaza was introduced to me by my colleague. Supposed to be Jai Thai, not Jia Thai and the most of what I tried was authentic enough. I tried the set lunch, pineapple rice set A (see http://www.jai-thai.com/setmenu.htm)
The rice portion was quite big (for a petite lady like me, hahahha) and covered with floss, quite tasty but not memorable (then again, my memory's going with each day). The thai spring roll was crispy, but my fav was the green curry, which was surprisingly spicy and flavourful. Not particular abt the ingredients so didnt mind the small portions, as long as the food packs a punch on flavour and chilli! Can't remember exactly how the fish with chilli sauce tasted like, but that was the first dish i tried, and stuck on for a while before moving on to the curry, so must be pretty good too. The pandan chicken was abit disappointing, rather dry, although adds a good variety.
Dessert were three slices of agar agar with real coconut shreds in them. Thought this was not bad, quite different (compared to normal fruits) and not overly sweet.
In all, the portions though small, were more than adequate for me, and the good mix of saltiness, spice and sweetness I look for in Thai food were there. Only big turnoff was the location. If I ever manage to persuade Mr Lim here, will prob try the Family Set A, with a whole fish (cooked any style they have that you like) which looks big enough. |
